‘I’ve got your next assignment,’ my agent said. ‘You need to take Emma Watson to Alton Towers.’
The name rang a bell to me. Then I realised it was the teenager who played Hermione in the Harry Potter films.
‘She wants to go to the theme park,’ he explained. ‘But she’ll be mobbed by fans unless you’re there.’
Hanging up, I couldn’t believe my first job. A huge star and roller coasters. Plus, I was getting paid £150 for it.
The next day, I picked up Emma and her two friends in my car. She seemed smaller than her on-screen character, her brown hair was tied back and she was wearing a hoody.
‘Hi,’ I said, smiling. ‘Hey,’ she said in her polished accent. I thought she would be stand-offish, but we were soon chatting away about boys and make-up.
‘What’s Daniel Radcliffe like?’ I asked a bit later. ‘He’s great,’ she smiled. ‘We’re such good friends now.’
I sat next to her mate on the rides and screamed as we hurtled around the roller coasters. In between all the white-knuckle thrills, Emma was mobbed by eager fans.
‘I just want to sign autographs – no photos today, please,’ she whispered in my ear as I held the fans at arms length.
They were only kids, but they squirmed to get past me. I managed to keep them under control, protecting Emma from their grabbing hands.
‘Thanks for a great day,’ Emma said later as I dropped her off. ‘I usually hate having a bodyguard around, but you really made my day.’
My face burned with pride. To know I was protecting a top celeb better than the blokes she’d hired before showed I’d really made it.
Emma asked for me to look after her again a few months later. I protected her at the O2 Wireless Festival in Hyde Park.
