Bill Nighy talks Scrimgeour & Harry's relationship in Deathly Hallows

In a new interview, actor Bill Nighy spoke about the character he will portray in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Minister for Magic Rufus Scrimgeour, and his relationship with Harry in the films.

Quote:

"Scrimgeour is a tragic figure," said Bill. "He knows what's coming. It's a very moving thing to play.

"He's also very powerful and has had a very complicated progress to the top. And he has an interesting relationship with Harry, who views him initially with contempt. But then it's softened by subsequent events.

"There's a scene where he delivers Dumbledore's legacy to the three children.

"He gives them all the things Dumbledore has left them, and that's when it's indicated he may not be around for much longer."
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be released on November 19, 2010 and July 15, 2011.

I love Bill!!! He was so fantastic in Pirates and Underworld! Also Alex Rider!

Padfoot7 12-22-2009 05:47 PM

Neat. :) He seems like he'll be a good Scrimgeour.

Patronus Charm 12-22-2009 06:03 PM

when he hands over the inheritance in the book, he plays detective....he doesnt, in the least, act like he may not be there in the future, so is this yet another twist???

obsessedwithrupert 12-22-2009 06:10 PM

Oh yay! I didn't realise Bill Nighy was going to be in Deathly Hallows; I love him, he's so awesome. Now I'm looking forward to it even more! :D

GoGoGryffindor 12-22-2009 06:30 PM

cool but children?! i wouldn't call them that

daffodilical 12-22-2009 06:43 PM

I love him for being so enthusiastic about this even before he got the part. Love him, love him, love him.

(And of course he'd call them children! If I were older I'd definitely call anyone twenty or more years younger than me a child, especially anyone I'd seen as children in a series of ridiculously popular films.)

Isn't that when it's first indicated that he's losing control?

To someone as old and influential as Scrimgeour, three kids that are around seventeen would be children. Since he's not particularly friendly with Harry when they first meet, I could certainly imagine the new Minister condescending them in such a way.

Bill is one of my favorite actors, so I can't wait to see him as Scrimgeour.

Nice short interview!

veggie_potter 12-22-2009 09:56 PM

Glad to hear they're keeping the will in, what with their knack of getting rid of things that seem important.

PadfootAndTheWolf 12-22-2009 10:59 PM

Ooh I truely can't wait for this movie! I'm sure he will be great as Rufus!!!

DragonStar 12-22-2009 11:27 PM

I cant wait to see Bill's portrayal of Rufus

kjblock28 12-22-2009 11:40 PM

Interesting... Wonder if they are changing it a bit, in the book Harry and Scrimgeour fight and Scrimgeour storms out. Wouldn't really say that was a touching scene?? It's not until Harry finds out Scrimgeour died to protect him that he starts to change his mind about him.

princess of*hp* 12-23-2009 12:04 AM

I've never thought of Scrimgeour being deep, but I guess he is.

GryffindorLioness 12-23-2009 12:21 AM

WOOT! I'm excited Scrimgeour is portrayed in the Deathly Hallows movie! I was disappointed we didn't get to see him in HBP, but hopefully this will make up for it!
