Default Quidditch Tryouts

2120-2121 SCHOOL YEAR QUIDDITCH TRYOUTS
Quote:
Before posting in tryouts, please make sure you’ve reviewed the Quidditch and Gobstones Guidelines thread in full and have submitted the required questionnaire for the character(s) you hope to place on their House team.

A reminder as well that Quidditch tryouts are open to all student-age characters whether they are a post bit or additional character.
The pitch was remarkably ordinary.

Save for a rather large trunk set right square in the center of the pitch. And a dozen wicker baskets suspended in the air.

But other than that, just open air, a clear stretch of cloudless blue sky, and enough room for every broom on the pitch to zip around freely.

Cloggs hovered several feet above the ground, arms folded loosely behind his back as he surveyed students as they shuffled across the crisp green grass in various states of nervousness. His robes stirred gently despite the complete lack of wind, his ghostly form drifting lazily from side to side as though hovering still was a herculean task.

Ah, good. Yes, yes, hurry up now ― high knees in ― and start rolling those shoulders and flexing your fingers,” he instructed, his voice effortlessly echoing across the pitch. “Take a few minutes to warm yourselves up. Nothing complicated. Climb, descend, turn, accelerate, slow yourself down again. Get a feel for your broom and remind yourselves that it is, in fact, an extension of you rather than an especially expensive, but well-crafted, wooden passenger.

A faint smirk crossed his face as he descended slightly so he was a bit more eye level with even the tallest seventh year.

Keep your flying controlled. There is no prize for reaching the other side of the pitch first, and I would rather not spend the morning watching anyone discover the limits of their braking distance.

His gaze swept across the group once more before his expression softened, just slightly.

And enjoy it. If flying isn't enjoyable, I'm afraid you're doing it wrong.

He lifted the silver whistle around his neck and blew through it sharply.

Off you go.

OOC: Welcome to quidditch tryouts! Please go ahead and have your character(s) mount their brooms and take to the skies. If your character is a first year, be sure that they grab a school broom located near the entry to the pitch, as always.

For this round, have your character take to the air and practice some basic flying: climbs, descents, turns, acceleration, slowing down, hovering, etc. Feel free to show off their usual flying style or any particular strengths they have!

We’ll get to that suspiciously large trunk and those baskets in the next 36-ish hours!

TRYOUT PROGRESSION

Please note that you may jump into tryouts at any point in the progression ― whether that means catching up on previous phases or jumping right in to the current one.

Viano had made sure to turn up early for tryouts with Diego by his side. He was very optimistic about the prospects of them both making the Gryffindor team this year again, even as he wondered about the baskets. He nodded briefly at Cloggs, squinting after slightly because you know… the sunlight made it sort of difficult to see a ghost. But of course they were going to be diving straight into warm ups! Vi rested his broomstick on the ground for a bit, taking the time to do the bodily warm ups. As he did so, his gaze scanned the pitch for Connor, a tiny smirk playing on his lips. But he couldn’t let Con be the full focus of his attention. Not just yet, at least.

“Here we go,’’ he cheerfully told Di, finally glad that the shrill of the whistle had pierced the air. But just before he mounted his Moontrimmer Dlite, Vi whipped out a vibrant red headband, pulling it on so that his hair would be kept out of his face. For certain he would not have Cloggs all up in his space, giving hinting looks this time around?

That small task out of the way, Viano threw Diego a grin and kicked off from the ground, gradually beginning his climb.

Levi was pumped!

Just think! When he had joined Hogwarts as a firstie, he had been uncertain about what he would be doing with his life - as from being a student, that is - but Quidditch had taken a key spot. He was grateful to the sport for being one of the factors that helped boost his confidence.

He arrived at the Pitch, waving to those who gathered there, including Professor Cloggs. “All the best, guys,’’ he told everyone close by. Enthusiastically he began his shoulder rolls - one might be concerned that he may somehow cause injuries to said shoulders because of this. The same could be thought for flexing those digits of his. Listen, this Hufflepuff just could not wait to get airbourne.

He scanned his surroundings for Diallo before he took off. The best friend was another reason for his confidence. The wind whipped him in the face as he ascended. Even the sunshine felt lovely, and after deciding that he was at a satisfactory altitude, Levi began his acceleration.

Wheee!

Default Calliope Barrington | Slytherin [chaser] (the other menace to post later)
astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf

Calliope's arrival to the pitch was, as usual, accompanied by the immediate sweep of dark eyes across the gathered students and tightening of her thick brown ponytail. Not that she was looking for anyone in particular. Obviously. She simply liked to know who was here and who she was up against.

It just so happened that she was also looking for a certain red head.

Something in Calliope's shoulders loosened before she could stop it. There was no denying that she'd been wondering whether this year's tryouts would carry the same particular tension as the last. Only, now she knew exactly what that tension had been and, well, they had thoroughly remedied it. Problem was not that she had not anticipated just exactly how addictive it could be ― almost as intoxicating as flying itself.

Almost. All things needed to know their place.

Whatever they were now, Calliope wasn't entirely sure she wanted to put a name to it. Maybe that was for the best. Ariel would be graduating at the end of the term, after all, and Calliope had no intention of making things unnecessarily complicated when there was a perfectly good broom, an entire pitch waiting, and a whole term ahead still to occupy her attention.

Something for future Calliope to think about.

Calliope's attention shifted toward the rather conspicuous trunk in the center of the pitch, followed by the baskets suspended overhead and tried not to outwardly groan at yet another professor's theatrics. Ugh, whatever. It was alway something with these Hogwarts professors.

At the sharp blast of Cloggs' whistle, Calliope rolled her shoulders and the instant her feet left the grass, the rest of the world seemed to fall neatly into place. The sixth year rose into the clear blue air, first climbing before tipping into a smooth descent, then banking sharply into a tight turn. She accelerated across the pitch, wind catching at her whisps, sending her ponytail into a frenzy, and pulling the corners of her mouth into the faintest, most satisfied smile before she eased back on the handle and brought herself down into a controlled glide as she rounded the curve of the pitch.

Bathes in Maple Syrup | Dancing Lobster | Moy Pomidor | Seneca's Beard | That Is So Fetch!

Her broom rested across one shoulder as she approached the others, brown eyes sweeping briefly over the strange collection of baskets overhead and the enormous trunk planted conspicuously in the middle of the pitch. Interesting.

More interesting was the familiar brunette already among the gathered students. Ariel's gaze lingered on the Slytherin for approximately half a second longer than necessary before she carried on as though she hadn't noticed her at all.

At Cloggs' instruction, Ariel lowered her broom onto the grass beside her and began stretching properly. She rolled her shoulders backward, then forward, before reaching one arm across her chest and hooking the other around it for a few seconds on one side before switching to the other. Then she bent at the waist until her fingertips brushed the grass, straightened, and pulled one foot behind her until her heel nearly touched the back of her thigh.

Once her limbs were accounted for, Ariel kicked off and climbed quickly, letting the broom carry her upward before leaning forward and accelerating gradually. The wind immediately caught her hair and pulled it away from her face as she crossed the pitch.

Ariel tipped the broom sharply and swept into a wide turn, descending as she came around before pulling upward again. Another climb followed, steeper this time, and then a sudden drop that sent her stomach pleasantly upward before she levelled herself several feet above the grass. The movement was easy and controlled, not to mention incredibly boring.

Cloggs had told them to enjoy themselves, so Ariel pulled back hard on the handle. The broom shot upward, nearly vertical, before Ariel threw her weight sideways and launched into her signature Dizzy Dragon. One rotation became two, then three as broom and rider corkscrewed tightly through the air, Ariel's red hair whipping around her face while the sky and pitch blurred together around her. She tightened the spiral for another rotation before breaking cleanly from it and snapping her broom level again.

Her eyes found Calliope almost immediately afterward—entirely coincidentally, of course.

Angling toward her, she approached from behind and slightly above. Rather than simply passing her, however, the Gryffindor tipped her broom and slipped smoothly beneath Calliope's flight path. For a brief moment she disappeared underneath her before banking upward on Calliope's opposite side.

"This is you warming up?" she asked innocently. As her broom drifted closer by another few inches, the redhead flashed her a grin as they glided beside each other.

Default Angel (Slytherin) (S) :: Xelene (Gryffindor) (B)
That's Rough Buddy | Be the Flower | Moon & Stars

Angel was pumped and ready for tryouts. He’d been anticipating this day for a while. So much so, that he already took the time to warm up.

Grabbing one of the broomsticks provided for them, the first year joined the group that was forming. He took to the skies not as smoothly as he would have liked. Having a top of the line broom at home—one he trusted—was not the same as the ones here. He was getting used to them, but he was a creature of habit, and every time he wanted to kick off in his usual manner.

It was okay, though. What mattered was that he was working on getting used to these brooms. He had no other option, but to adapt.

While performing some of the warm-up drills, Angel caught sight of a brunette below. He smirked at her when she glanced up in his direction. His cousin was late. He won their bet.

He didn't linger much, though. Angel focused on his turns and acceleration. He was a fan of flying fast and pushing the limits, and now on this new broom he wanted to get acclimated the best he could. He hit the gas, speeding past a few players, then came to a halt—almost as if he'd been chasing the golden snitch, but coming to a stop when it disappears from view. Then he pretended to having spotted it again and accelerated once more.

The more drills he practiced, the more comfortable he felt on the school broom. He then moved onto ascending and descending, which now felt better.

Xelene was not happy to see Angel already up and about. To her defense she was still struggling with doing her hair. She was used to her mum doing all the pretty styles and now that she was on her own, she couldn’t recreate them. So she opted for a simple yet cute style: half up ponytail and half her hair down.

She poked her tongue out at him and grabbed a broom. How amazing and fun would it be if she and Angel made their respective teams and went head to head? She was crossing her fingers and toes for that to come true.

Mounting the broom with ease, she took off flawlessly. She could tell Angel was jealous about that. She’s been flying since she was a baby (under her mum’s care, of course). And she’s tried out many brooms. She wasn’t picky.

Ignoring her cousin, she started on the warm-ups. She needed to perform her best! Seeing as her goal was to become beater, Xelene weaved through a few of the students there—making sure not to disrupt them—and practiced her focus. She could be easily distracted sometimes, but when it came to quidditch is was as a different form of herself took over. She had sharp moves and an unforgiving arm when her hand held a beaters bat.

Don't let her innocent looks fool you.

Diego was walking with Viano, Diallo was around somewhere as he walked in with his broom. "Looks like good conditions today." He commented. Vi seemed a little distracted and he was too for a different reason it looked like. Vi's eyes were on a certain Ravenclaw while he eyed the stands for Zen cheering them on.

Once he arrived, he did a few curls and stretches before mounting his broom. He up for defending, whether it was the goals for Keeper or his own teammates as Beater.

Yep, Diallo was here! He may have not made the team last year when he tried out, but he hoped to make it this year. He trained really hard and everything, even if he had to be benched. Whatever it takes, right? Now he wanted to be a Beater, having his own bat to twirl. Goggles rested over his curls, while he surveyed the area.

Cloggs he thought was pretty cool, and not just from the literal chill he gave passing through them. Waiting for the go ahead, he prepped himself mentally for the flying ahead.

Connor was feeling good about trying out again this year. He managed to even convince his friend to try out as well, even if they were on opposing teams. They knew the separate game from feelings, right? Well, some people seemed to have issues with that.

Connor pointedly avoided the gaze of another player, although he couldn't deny what felt like a shiver through his skin. Professor Cloggs chill was nearby, wasn't it? He told himself that before his eyes briefly caught the glimpse of a smirk-Nope. Not today.

Mounting his broom, he took off as soon as Cloggs gave them the go ahead. Focus now, think later.

You know, there was some mighty cool reasons to join the Quidditch team. His best friend playing? Sure, that... would be one. But the time off from classes for practice, certain girls looking their way, the cool jersey robes they were allowed to wear? Just a few of the perks. Oh, but he did like the sport. Otherwise, he wouldn't have made it down to the pitch.

Falcon's locs were tied in an updo today. He smirked at Connor's obvious behavior of trying not to be affected. "Right, here we go." He knew how valuable stretching was before flying off. Making sure his legs and arms wouldn't have any knicks beforehand.

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

Marina had been looking forward to tryouts.

That was probably why she had chosen to ignore the cold.

It wasn't a real cold, anyway. At least that was what she had told herself when she woke up with a scratchy throat and a nose that had apparently developed a personal vendetta against her. It was just a sniffle. Nothing that was going to stop her from getting on a broom.

Unfortunately, her nose had apparently not been consulted.

By the time Cloggs blew his whistle, Marina had already sneezed twice.

She wiped at her nose with the back of her hand, sniffed, and looked down at her broom with the faint suspicion of someone wondering whether it had any idea what she was about to put it through.

“Okay,” she said to herself. “We can do this.”

She mounted and kicked off with the others, immediately feeling better once her feet left the ground. Flying still felt like flying. Familiar. Easy enough to settle into. She climbed, dipped, turned, then accelerated across the pitch before slowing again, following Cloggs' instructions. Her movements weren't quite as crisp as she wanted them to be, but she could blame that on the cold.

Probably.

Another sneeze caught her halfway through a turn.

Marina's eyes squeezed shut for half a second, one hand tightening around the broom as she fought through it. She managed to correct herself before drifting too far off course, but when she opened her eyes again, she gave the broom an offended look.

Still, she pushed on, determined not to let a blocked nose and watery eyes ruin the morning. Keeper was still the position she wanted. She liked the feeling of guarding the hoops, of having something concrete to focus on, and she had spent enough time flying to know she was capable of it. And Zinnia Shacklebolt's training had built her confidence further. She just needed her body to cooperate.

Which, judging by the next sneeze, was proving to be an unreasonable request.

Marina sniffed miserably and pulled her sleeve over her hand before rubbing at her nose again. When the proper drills began, she squared her shoulders and gripped her broom tighter. She might have been slightly congested, slightly sleep-deprived, and one sneeze away from launching herself in an entirely unintended direction, but she was still here.

And she was going to try.
