| | | Was Snape a good professor? Was Snape a Good Professor? When it comes to controversial characters, Severus Snape is probably the poster child for the category. While he is definitely a complex man whose history we got to learn over the course of the series, one thing was always a constant - his skill in potions and his desire to be a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.
Snape showed promise as a potioneer during his time at school (he WAS the Half Blood Prince, after all!) and his desire to teach DADA was no secret to anyone - even the students picked up on it. Despite his obvious talents in those subjects, his teaching methods were often questionable. Aside from his obvious distaste for Harry, he clearly exhibited favoritism to his Slytherins, and his treatment of Neville, Hermione and others was downright brutal at times.
Some can argue that his past and his conflict with Gryffindors and Harry's dad in particular may have played in to it. Others may also say that his skill in the subjects cannot be denied and shows that he knew what he was doing and was still an affective instructor in that regard. So my question to you all is this - was Snape a good professor? Or not?

So I love Snape as much as the next gal, but he was not a good Professor. There's no question on his skill, because that definitely made him very rewarding of the position. But because of how brutal he could be to some of the students anyone not Slytherin maybe? Idk he didn't really give fair opportunity for all the students to learn.
No one wants to go to a class where their teacher has clear favorites and is down right mean and condescending to the ones not in that select group. And when you don't want to go to a class, my experience has shown students more likely to watch the clock counting down the hours to freedom over actually immersing in discussion and activities and learning.

Chellie- i agree! It would have been tough to be in a class with Snape especially since he plays favourites. I would also hate getting called out by a Professor (I did at school). When a Professor would ask a question, I’d pretend to “focus” on my book so I wouldn’t be called on I feel like Snape would see through that
I feel if Snape thought you were competent or up to his skill level, then he’d take an interest in you as a student. Other than that- I think he’d enjoy pushing his students

THIS. It doesn't matter how skilled a teacher is in the subject if they make students dread the class. A good professor would not let his feelings toward certain students (favouritism / hatred) affect his treatment of them.
I also agree with Shan that Snape would show an interest in talented students, like Hermione Granger. Yes, he says really mean things to her in the books regardless of her competence, and sometimes precisely because of her skill ("insufferable know-it-all") but I like to think of him as the kind of teacher who tells the bright, hardworking students to stay after class and give them even more homework xD to teach them advanced content. And those like Hermione would appreciate that.

While I am not a teacher and never taught in my life (on a pro-level anyway lol), I think Snape was a realistic teacher/professor. I don't remember I've had a teacher who did not have a niche or had their unfair treatment to some students or...etc. (maybe this is more common in developing countries? IDK), but in general, I'd assess teachers based on their technical knowledge rather than their personalities and mental packages.
I think Snape is my favourite character in the franchise because of how realistic he acted and felt, how relatable he can be to some. And from what was written about him in Potions, he seemed to be a good professor. |

Snape was not a good Professor for the very reasons listed above. He is very knowledgeable, yes, but I'll never forget how he favoured his own House over others. Teachers do have favourites but I think most of them would go out of their way to hide that favouritism. Also, can we ever get over the fact how much he terrified Neville that Snape became his boggart? I don't think I can.
I'd think Snape would have been a great professor if his life had turned out better and he hadn't held onto so much bitterness.
