| | A Day in the Life of a Professor A Day in the Life of a Professor! You know what has really always bothered me about the Hogwarts professors? Not knowing about their personal lives! Where do they sleep? Do they have families that they go visit? What about those professors who do have families - do they visit on weekends, or can they Floo home every night?
This thread is for all sorts of speculation - what have you always headcanoned for the professors and their behind the scenes lives? Let's discuss!

I love this thread. This also bothered me not knowing much about the Professor’s families and personal lives- it would have been nice to know that. I think it would have been difficult to be a Professor with a young family. Imagine having young kids and then being at Hogwarts for most of the school year. I think they’d miss out on so much of their kids childhood. Its almost as if the kids grow up with a parent that constantly travels which is extremely hard through some big ages… but then the Professor and child probably get a lot to catch up on when they start attending Hogwarts. Hopefully their kid isn’t too much of a troublemaker
But seriously it must have been very lonely to be a Professor at Hogwarts. I headcanoned that they are always able to go visit their friends/family on the weekend

oops I accidentally discussed this in another thread here's my speculation about professors' living arrangements: Quote:

I believe it's canon that there are multiple professors teaching each class, so there should be enough adults around to maintain the rotating schedule, not to mention dozens of prefects and ghosts who also help to patrol corridors. Homes are only a Floo away, and there are fireplaces in all professors' offices.
I'm getting off track buuut what I'm trying to say is that I think professors had a lot more time to invest in their personal lives than we know. For example, Minerva McGonagall lived in Hogsmeade with her husband while teaching at Hogwarts. She went to school every morning and returned home in the evenings. I think professors would be given the choice to live at Hogwarts or at home with their family. But if they do live at school, away from their families, for the majority of the year, I agree that it would be very sad.

I also would like to think that they visited their families often. There has to be some arrangements behind the scenes for this to happen. I think not seeing their families often would have negatively impacted their teaching career. For example, sadness would take over and this would make it difficult to want to teach. They might even consider resigning.
But we know that some teachers stayed at Hogwarts at least during some weekends {as seen in PoA when a few went to Hogsmeade for a drink at Madam Rosemerta's} so I'd like to think that maybe there was a shift system for which went home? Like... a few would go one weekend, another set the following weekend etc. This would ensure there are some left behind for keeping the School in order.

^I agree that they probably had some sort of shift thing. Or perhaps the ones who stuck around and did the duties associated with weekend shifts - like supervising Hogsmeade trips and such - were the ones without families. If they didn't have families there might not be a need for them to leave the castle at all, so they mostly just hung out on the weekends.

All of these are really great points! It does make sense that the professors probably would be able to come-and-go from Hogwarts at times. I bet it would be harder to get professors to continue working for the school if they have to constantly be away from their family for the vast majority of the year.
Plus all the magical forms of transportation make it quick and easy to travel for a weekend off. Which I guess means some of them maybe could actually Floo home at night to sleep and Floo back to their office the next morning. I've always headcanoned that most professors probably have a secret room that connects to their office where they can sleep. OR...maybe the professors have a dorm just like the students? I wonder if they're good dormmates with each other, and if any of them snore
