I have always kinda liked Narcissa. I don't think she is mean at all, I think she is easily influenced. Her parents brought her up to dislike muggles, and to believe in pure-bloods being superior. I think she married Lucius to please her parents, and was impressed by him being a bit of a "bad boy". She is very protective of her son, and will do anything for him. I feel that she is pre[ared to do anything for the people she loves. I don't think she ever thought she would have to be hugely involved in her husband's activities (eg. being a death eater). I think she has been brought up to believe she is better than everyone else, and doesn't want to let go of that belief. I think if she had been brought up in another family she would have been a lovely person.

I feel that she is somewhere in the middle. She's not really mean, but she's not quite nice either. She does mean things, but every so often she does nice things as well...

DrHawk579 12-31-2011 05:59 PM

I believe that she has a kind heart that loves her family. A lot of people believe that she only married Lucius or her parents, but I believe she was attracted to Lucius because of his charisma, and confidence. She just wants whats best for her family, and I think that, due to her up bringing, she believed status and wealth were whats best. I think she deeply cares for Draco, and is willing to do what ever she needs to protect him. She is a very caring mother, and supportive wife. This is why she became a death eater, to support her husband. I wonder how life changed for her family after "you know who" was defeated. This would give you a better understanding of her character.

Narcissa came from a pure-blood background and held many of their beliefs. If she had any good thoughts we are not told. She was married to Lucius who would've known to be a Deatheater and a part of the Voldemort inner-circle. So that shows agrred with the Deatheaters and what they thought of mudbloods and non-human magical creatures.

The only peop;e she cared about was Draco and Lucius. When she asked Harry about Draco in the Forbidden Forest asking if he were still alive, you can be fairly sure that if Harry had said Draco was dead or he didn't know she would've happily given Harry up to Voldemort.

So, I would say she was just as evil in her way as Belatrix.

I believe that she is neither good or bad. All she cares about is her family. She would do anything to protect them and does not care what anybody else thinks.

ChloeElyse 02-26-2012 06:50 PM

i think she is both because she will do anything for her son but sometimes the malfoy prode kicks in then she becomes mean and angry!

Hermione345 03-31-2012 07:04 AM

Narcissa has always been a snob. She disliked muggles and muggle-borns and believed that muggle learning must be limited to magical families. That's her mean side.

But, on the other hand, she cared a lot for her family, especially her son. Draco was a 'mummy's boy'. This doesn't mean that she's 'nice', but it exposes her love and loyalty towards her family and shows that she cared more about her family than ambition and powers. It shows that she was a 'family woman' who put her family before anything else.

Madame Griswold 05-09-2012 01:17 AM

Both, same as anyone else.

Her family meant so much to her. (not just being a mother to Draco, but a sister to Bellatrix and a wife to Lucius) And her friends wouldn't have thought her a snob at all.

But to her enemies, she was a horrid and hateful woman.

She did start to change toward the end, especially when she saved Harry's life by lying to Voldemort. I doubt she'd be sharing make up tips with Hermione... but she turned out nicer than she started.

Narcissa is usually mean in the novel but when it comes to Dracos well being she shows a nice side to her

Lockhart292 03-29-2013 02:45 AM

She's a death eater, so she has the anti-muggle prejudices. However as a mother, Draco took precedence over Voldemort. She became a mom first. but she still hated muggles it woudl seem , and Draco did too. He must have learned form his parents.

Hasreadit 12-28-2013 04:23 PM

I feel like Narcissa was a good mother, but not necessarily a good person. At times, she seemed cruel, and uncaring to others. She did not like muggle borns, but maybe her parents made her think that way. She did have a heart, as she loved Draco. She also wasn't obsessed with Voldemort, like her sister. Overall, I feel like she was a deep character who was neither good nor bad.

AurorAvis 01-05-2014 02:50 AM

I think that Narcissa was a normal person with flaws just like everyone else. Perhaps she made questionable decisions that seemed larger than normal because of her family's influence and power. Rarely is there character of any depth who is simply mean or nice. You do have your villains such as Voldemort, Bellatrix Lestrange, Fenrir Greyback, the Carrows, etc, but every once in a while you have complex characters who end up fitting the anti-hero mold better than a hero/heroine.

I think that when Draco was younger he would have been well taken care of by both his parents, ...

I agree that the father/son relationship of Lucius and Draco in the books is a warm one. And the way Draco goes on at Madam Malkin's when Harry meet him for the first time in PS/SS (book 1), he appears to be a badly spoiled boy by both of his parents.

In the same way there is no question that Narcissa deeply loves her son and would go to any lengths to protect him - which she does in the two last books. However, just because both Narcissa and Lucius cares deeply for their son, doesn't necessarily mean that they are either good or bad persons. Even very wicked people, generally speaking, can be great parents to their own children. It's human to care for your own children, any normal person - and quite a few not so normal too - do this. It doesn't in any way define who they are as persons, to others.

In GOF (book 4) when the Death Eaters go on a rampage at the Quidditch World Cup and the trio meets Draco in the forest, Draco as good as tells them that both of his parents are part of the Death Eaters that torture the Muggle camp site owner and his family. Any person who take part in torturing small children is certainly mean, in my opinion, so to me this settles the question: Yes, she is mean.

Further, she didn't lie to Voldemort about whether Harry was alive or not in the Forbidden Forest in DH (book 7) for Harry's sake. It was her ticket to be allowed into the castle, where Draco was, should the non Death-Eaters win. So for me it doesn't change anything.

Just my opinion. :)

leviOsa_NOT_leviosA 01-02-2016 04:41 AM

I think that she was raised to think that purebloods were better than everyone else. but after the second war in which she worked with Voldemort against muggle borns, she had her son to consider, and she started to think about if this war was important enough to risk her son, that then lead to her second guessing the cause itself.

IDK, I could be totally wrong but this is what I always thought happened.
K bye! :r/hr:

weasleyrima 01-02-2016 05:52 AM

didn't see her as amuggle hater,
But as a mother, she's kinda great. Protective mother.

LestrangeRaven 01-07-2016 01:14 PM

Narcissa is a loving mom, i think beside making her ticket to the castle by saving Harry in DH, is also because she is a mom, especially having a son in Harry's age, so yeah, she might be mean but she also a mom, thats why she still have a compassion to Harry... so for me, if she's still thinking about her family with care and love, she not as that mean.. if she is, she wouldn't care about Draco and do her task as best as she could to done it right, even if she have to sacrifice he son

well, that just my opinion..

AccioTARDIS 02-06-2016 08:01 PM

Hmm. I believe you are what you are made into being, but you can still change your circumstances if you CHOOSE to do so. I would like to believe that Narcissa did choose at the end to take the right path. When you think of Death Eaters, for me, the word HATE comes to mind. It is nothing but hate that leads to murder, and the killing of innocence. When people come to a level like that, it is very hard for them to see a reason for not hating. Luckily, Narcissa, in the end, chose the love of her son, which negated the hate. So once again, it's proven, at least in the books, that love concurs hate. Like Dumbledore says, they should be pitied. “Do not pity the dead Harry. Pity the living, and, above all, those who live without love.”

He also said “You fail to recognize that it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be!”

And through the love of his mother, Narcissa, we see how much Draco changes by the end of the last book.
So, the question is, do I believe Narcissa is mean. I think she can be, just like everyone in the world can be. However, the love she shows for her son, leads me to believe that there is hope for her, and all of us.

top94a 06-27-2016 02:30 AM

Narcisa is a great as a mother can be, I think she is only dragged by her sister Bellatrix, to side to the dark lord, or maybe, just to protect his man, Lucius and Draco.
anyways, thats the ways of a Slytherin, brave enough but saving neck first, so for me she not totally mean.

EmmyRivers 07-03-2016 05:40 AM

I think Narcissa's redeeming quality was the love she had for her son. In the earlier books we see she holds the same values as her husband and others like them, she shows the same disdain for Harry and 'mudbloods', and it is very likely she was very much involved with the Death Eaters during Voldemort's first reign.

However, I believe Draco changed her, becoming a mother made her re-evaluate, but this didn't come to light until after Voldemort's return, and she and her family were put in considerable danger.

At the end of day, she is human and just like the rest of us - she has her bad sides and her good sides. And she will don anything for her son.
