Deaths in Deathly Hallows

It was predicted for ages who would die in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Well, now, we know what the real truth is! This is the thread where you can talk about all of those favorite morbid topics: who died, how they died, what you liked about it, and what you hated about it. Just ... the deaths in general. Great, isn't it?

Make sure you check out the forum rules before posting in here!

I thought I'd make it a little easier for everyone:

Charity Burbage
Hedwig
Alastor "Mad-eye" Moody
Ted Tonks
Rufus Scrimgeour
Bathilda Bagshot
Peter "Wormtail" Pettigrew
Dobby the House Elf
Crabbe
Colin Creevey
Fred Weasley
Fenrir Greyback
Remus Lupin
Nymphadora Tonks
Severus Snape
Harry Potter - well kind of
Nagini
Bellatrix Lestrange
Tom Marvolo "Voldemort" Riddle

I'm quite sad about some of the deaths. :( So many of my favourites died.

I can't believe Fred died.

TeeNa 07-21-2007 03:57 AM

Well, Voldie's was the one predicted... quite weird one for Harry, really... I'm just... I feel weird about it...
one of the twins... predicted, but I didn't want to believe it
I'm happy that the main heroes live, I... the epilogue, ok, that's a different case, but, I'm still happy that everything is fine after all
Bella's death - extazaganza something, I'm surprised with the killer :)
Dobby... I never really cared about him, though he did A LOT, but his was terrible
man, Snape... um... ok, I think it was meant to be that way, that another Dumbledore's man through and through was supposed to sacrifice himself to save Harry, oh... well, I believe Jo really meant that and the way he died, just hilarious
newlyweds... sad, really sad, but I always knew all the Marauders were supposed to die anyway... everyone in their era... I made my sig a year ago and I knew it would be that way.. somehow... though it is sad, I love them

I'm upset that Fred, Lupin, Hedwig and Dobby died :(

i_love_phelps_twins 07-21-2007 05:56 AM

Fred Weasley Dies.. :( saddest day ever

Doryannea 07-21-2007 06:56 AM

I was so upset after every death... I mean, reading it, was like laughing and crying in turns. I'm glad that no one could hear me, cos one could suspect that I'm having border-line personality or something... Anyway, Fred, Dobby, Regulus and Hedwig... And Tonks & Lupin... I mean I was so sorry for little Ted :(

Rebecca_Potter 07-21-2007 10:31 AM

Seems like both Black brothers were different from their muggle-hating parents. I loved how Kreacher took care of the trio in the book. =) It didn't strike me that Lupin died until the death confirmation part. I felt really sad then. Then there's the Weasleys. George will be devastated. After losing an ear, he loses his brother! :( Dobby's death was just sad. He loved Harry so much. Poor thing.

Libbi_Granger 07-21-2007 10:51 AM

I cried like REALLY REALLY REALLY hard when Harry "died" and then felt like a crybaby when he actually came back. I thought how Fred died was weird. But I Luuuuuuurved how Bellatrix died. Mrs. Weasley called her a witch with a capitol B! Rock on! But Remus and Tonks both dying was tragic and unnecessary I thought. Of course I haven't slept in 26 hours, so I'm not quite thinking straight.

Fallon Chanel 07-21-2007 12:11 PM

I couldn't BELIEVE it when Fred died! I mean, how random! I bet barely anyone thought that'd happen! I figured they wouldn't even BE in this book! Out of all the deaths, Fred's was the saddest. I didn't care about anyone else that died, really. And goodness! JKR killed off people left and right! I was shocked about Hedwig and Dobby, but I dont care about them, so it didn't matter to me.

DontCallMeNymphadora 07-21-2007 12:19 PM

Please don't laugh, but I am seriously crying right now. I just...Remus and Tonks, it was terribly romantic and tragic. The way JK described them, too - *reaches DH out*
Quote:

Harry had a clear view of the bodies lying next to Fred: Remus and Tonks, pale and still and peaceful looking, apparently asleep beneath the dark, enchanted ceiling.
I think that's what made me howl. Plus the fact that they had a son, and Remus' reaction when Teddy was born. *wails*

angelofdeath983 07-21-2007 01:49 PM

^^Agreed. I really did cry at that bit.

Padie 07-21-2007 02:19 PM

^^ I agree too.. It's bring tears to my eyes again >_<

Fred's death struck me so hard... I always thought one of the Weasleys would die but I never thought it would be one of the twins *bites lip*

I didn't quite understand why JK killed Hedwig though o.O Why kill an owl? I suppose it was just 'cause they wouldn't be able to go around undercover *sigh* That's the only reason I'm seeing...

And Mad-Eye... Aww man... Poor guy >_<

Kazters 07-21-2007 02:25 PM

Gutted Voldemort killed snape yet he thought snape was on his side!

why kill Lupin and Tonks though why not just one!

and the twin!

and Hedwig!

so glad wasnt trio though!

DontCallMeNymphadora 07-21-2007 03:00 PM

I thought Hedwig's death was rather pointless....^ Yeah, why not just kill Remus, and leave Tonks to have to raise Teddy on her own, which would devastate me but I love it when there's lots of Tonks or Remus involved in the story.

Parslemouth555 07-21-2007 03:46 PM

Lupin and Tonks was a shame, I liked them.

Dobby's burial made me cry, especially "Here lies Dobby. A free Elf" That's what got me.

Voldy was assumed.

Fred or George, one of them had to go, didn't they?

Creevey, why Creevey!

And Hedwig...well, that was just daft.

TeeNa 07-21-2007 03:50 PM

she promised a bloodbath... and here it was 21 deaths and one fake

Nahima 07-21-2007 04:10 PM

This was a bloodbath indeed, so sad.
I would have preferred Percy's death instead of Fred's.

*sobs*

emma_rlz 07-21-2007 04:32 PM

I'm really shocked about the deaths in DH: I don't cry easily, and though the bit with the Resurrection Stone made me cry, the scene about all the deaths just made the tears pour at about half five this morning and I didn't stop for about another hour.

But, Jo planned it, so we can't exactly go against her.

TeeNa 07-21-2007 05:03 PM

the most depressing scene to me was when all good marauders returned to see harry, i felt like i could never stop crying, i mean i cry everytime when he meets them for five minutes in GoF, but now he meets every single person out there and it's just so sad, so meaningful and graceful at the same time, the way he wants to see them, the way they protect him, the way they talk to them... Dumbledore's moment was weird, though... (naked Harry? hello Equus), he was dead and alive at the same time, truly weird, the alchemistry research Jo did must've really got too far in this

starlightangel 07-21-2007 07:06 PM

I am unbelievably...i'm not sure what the word is for how i'm feeling, i think appalled/disappointed in JKR that Fred died. I didn't think she'd dare tread into a territory that she doesn't understand, and will never understand. The death of a twin - and one whom was so close to the other is so terrible...but she didn't bother to write any grief for it, i was so...angry i think at the death. She shouldn't have killed him off unless she was to kill George off too.

The death of Hedwig was not 'pointless' it was probably one of the most important in the book. Hedwig was his first link to the wizarding world. She was his pet, and was deeply important to him. By killing Hedwig, the only one who had been there for him from the beginning (besides Hagrid) JKR severed Harry well and truly from the wizarding world, taking from him his first links to what he was truly to become. What would he do with a snowy owl who is recognizable? If he used her to communicate, she would have been killed and they would have been discovered.

I was expecting more deaths, and grief, and emotion actually. Maybe i'm cold hearted from all i've seen and lost but the book was tame, she didn't kill anyone else too close to the reader. It was a shame, to me. I was expecting a bloodbath and i feel depreived.

padfoot_88 07-21-2007 08:21 PM

From Ron and Hermione's kiss on page 502 until about an hour after finishing the book, I was a mess. I could barely see for the tears, and even now I keep tearing up every few minutes, when I think about the whole thing.
The deaths were all so sad and tragic...but that's how it is in war. Mad Eye and Hedwig were so sudden, right at the very beginning of the book, which brought the reader straight into the fact that war is cruel and anyone can die at anytime. There was no fluffy, happy, everything's-fine-for-the-most-part-of-the-year-until-we-just-happen-to-run-into-Voldemort-right-at-the-end. Mad Eye's death showed that even the toughest and most skilled of wizards aren't invincible, and Hedwig's death...that was just heartbreaking. I did expect it to effect Harry a little more than it did though. She was his first true friend in the wizarding world, his only connection to it when he was locked away with the Dursleys, and to lose her...
I would be distraught.
Dobby's death also had me in tears. Expecially his burial. That was a bittersweet moment.
Fred was...omg, words can't describe how upset I was when I read it. And when his family were all gathered around, George by his head and Molly over his body...heart-wrenching indeed.
Remus and Tonks was the most tragically romantic thing in the whole series. Their death was a lot like Lily and James's too, and it kind of makes sense that all the Marauders be reunited once again. It was just so sad about poor Teddy being left behind. What's got me curious is who raised him? That wasn't clarified in the end...

As for all the other deaths...my goodness, there were so many it would take me a year to explain my thoughts on all of them. Harry's "fake" death really messed me up. I seriously thought he was going to die. The way JKR wrote those scenes was amazing though. Once again, Harry is saved by Voldemort's stupidity.

DontCallMeNymphadora 07-21-2007 09:38 PM

^ Yeah, I'd like to know who raised Teddy. I reckon Molly Weasley or Dromeda.

EDIT - Okay, we now know it was Andromeda who raised Teddy.

Fred's death was just....wow. Written really well, but starlightangel is right, there wasn't enough mourning (same goes for Remus and Tonks. I wanted to see Dromeda's reaction when she finds out she's lost her husband and her daughter. It would make sense if she was then left to raise her orphan grandson).
21 deaths???? Wow. 21 deaths on the 21st of July.
I think a million people sighed with relief when old Voldie died, though.
Does anyone know who killed Tonks and Remus?

EDIT AGAIN - We also know that Dolohov killed Remus and Bella got her wish and killed her niece. Even though they're dead (Bella and Antonin)...*AKs them into infinity*

xamyx 07-21-2007 09:56 PM

FRED! He was just the best, so hilarious at all times, even before he died! That was just sad! Also, Lupin and Tonks - they were meant to have a happy life with their little twisted genes baby! They died to suddenly! And Snape, aww he was so cool once you read his whole past! I loved him by the end of it, I took serious pity! And he just died! :(

argentinaz_angel 07-21-2007 10:55 PM

100% agreed with Imi.

I expected Hermione to die in Ron\'s arms, or Harry to sacrifice himself for Ginny, or even Luna and Neville. I mean, A twin? An owl? An Auror? I thoguht this would be huge! I thought THE harry potter would die! And she went cliche and brought him bak <_< i did not like that. I did not like the ending. It was so completly cliche. \'He died! Oh nooo he came back from the dead, got married and had a bunch of kids named after all the dead people" <_< Like honestly, I expected better from JKR in that aspect
