Wand Alexa spent a few seconds staring at the magnificence that she held in her hands. Finally her own wand; 12 ½” Ash with Dragon heartstring, unyielding. Amazing. Was it possible for her to be in love? It was just so beautiful. “So, Lex, you like?” Her father asked, clearly oblivious to the reaction of the 11 year old. “I can’t wait to start using it! I’m gonna do everything with it!” She squealed in excitement. There was so much she could do now that she had her own wand; like hitting people considering she didn’t know any spells just yet. |
61. Kiss The park was always a nice place to go in order to clear one’s head and that was exactly why Alexa found herself there. She was still trying to figure out what happened earlier. One minute she was on her front step talking to Jeremy, a muggle from her elementary school class and the next thing she knew he kissed her then ran off as quickly as he could. She thought of just how smart he was to have run away like that. Merlin knew that if he had stayed for an extra second she would have broken his nose! |
96. Socks “Daddy have you seen my socks?” Alexa called from the top of the staircase. “The pink ones?” “No the blue ones.” “You mean the ones I got you for Christmas?” “No the darker blue.” She got the feeling her father had no idea what she was talking about—but he had to…daddies always knew. She slid down the railing of the staircase and landed on a pair of pink socks. …These use to be blue “What happened to my socks?” She asked. He shrugged as he walked by with a load of laundry. “I told you they were pink.” O______O |
50. Boggart Alexa ran over to her neighbour’s house after hearing that he had managed to sneak home a boggart from Hogwarts. The two stood in his backyard, neither able to control their anticipation. Finally Will released it from the jar. Instantly the boggart turned into a 6ft lion. Their eyes grew wide. “Uh…ridikulus!” Will shouted, hoping he would be able to impress her by controlling his biggest fear. No such luck though as the lion merely doubled in size. It gave a mighty roar as it took a bold step forward. Will fainted. Alexa stepped back incredulously. “Now that is ridiculous!” |
88. Sweet Tooth They had barely set foot in the sweets shop before Alexa bolted down the aisles. “I want this—no this—can I have this too?” She looked over at her father in all her excitement. It was no secret that she had a sweet tooth that she never denied and that was exactly why they were in there. Her father had tried taking a route that would ensure they didn’t walk by the candy store but it was all over once Lex caught another kid happily licking away at a lollipop while they waited in line at the Apothecary shop. |
100. Homework She had been staring at the parchment and quill for what seemed like hours. Every time she finally knew what she was doing another idea appeared in her mind and proved her wrong. Her eyes drifted to the clock on her bedroom wall. It was taunting her. She scowled at it. Yes she knew she had homework and she didn’t need it reminding her with every single sound it made. Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Her eye twitched. Tick. Jumping from her seat at the desk she grabbed hold of the heaviest object and the clock was silence in one throw. |
34. Parsel Tongue Alexa sat on the carpet of her livingroom concentrating on the yellow snake that had raised its head from the box she had put him in. Any minute now he would speak and she was determined to understand him when he did. “Lex, Honey, what are you doing?” Her father asked as he made his way into the room. The sight he saw confused him. “Practicing to be a parsel tongue.” “But we don’t have any parsel tongues in the family.” “That’s what you think but how would you know…?” Aha! And now on to the next order of business. |
89. Past Susan walked into the room and found that her princess was now awake. Blinking slowly, Alexa watched her mother enter the room. It put a smile on her little face. “Rise and shine my darling.” Her mother said with a warm smile as she stroked her hair. Lex smiled in contentment. “What’s for breakfast?” Her mother’s eyes widened playfully. “Hmm, I was feeling in the mood for a six year old girl; what do you think?” Alexa giggled. “No, silly, you can’t eat me or you’ll miss me and be all sad.” Susan smiled even wider. “Well that is true.” |
87. Staircase After a day of cleaning Will and Alexa found themselves staring at a dusty old door that they couldn’t recall seeing before, just beside the bookcase. Opening the dusty old door in the room they found a staircase leading down into darkness. The two stared off into this darkness trying to figure out where it led but then curiosity got the better of them. “Where do you think it leads?” “Only one way to find out.” “How?” In one swift motion Lex grabbed him by the arm and shoved him down the stairs. “Hey! What do you see down there?” |
57. Goblin The lines in Gringrotts were moving extra slow today and Alexa was starting to get bored of waiting. The only reason she had begged to accompany her father was because she had never seen a goblin before. As they finally approached the counter she took one look then hid behind her now very puzzled father. He turned so he could see her with questioning eyes. “You alright Champ?” “You never mentioned they were so funny looking…” Peering around her father to take a second look she caught the Goblin now glaring down at her with a very mean look. Eeep! |
84. Angry There was nothing but fury and rage etched into Alexa’s expression. She stormed around the room, knocking over everything in her path; every few steps taken left the small figurines shaking. Suddenly she let out an ear-shattering scream. How dare he?! He hadn’t been six months since her mother died yet her father was already trying to replace her?! Just thinking about it caused her to kick the coffee table so hard that the glass surface shattered and everything clattered to the floor. This only seemed to make her angrier. It should have been that woman’s head in its place. |
99. Trunks “Okay Daddy, remember, when you walk into the store that I want a blue trunk—it has to be blue a-and it shouldn’t have any pink o-or any purple; that’s a nasty colour…maybe some things to put inside it…” Her father sighed, removing his hand from the doorknob. “Do you realize that every time I make an attempt to leave this house you repeat the exact same thing?” with a very patient tone. He was sure that he had her speech memorized by now. “Well yeah…but only ‘cause I don’t want you to forget.” She said, smiling at him sweetly. |
71. Untie “Well I think today was rather eventful, what about you guys?” Her voice was drenched with satisfaction. Her older cousin had been spending time at her house and he was making things intolerable for her and her friends. Enough was enough. Maybe tying him up was a bit much but what else would you expect from a bunch of 11 and 12 year olds? Revenge had been sweet and they were able to do everything they wanted. “Yeah it was really fun…” Will sounded as if he was trying to figure something out. “But…um…did we remember to untie him?” |
22. Kneazle He had appeared like a thief in the night, quickly making friends with the young miss of the house. Alexa sat in the livingroom stroking the feline she named Felix. She didn’t know where he had come from but she was definitely planning to keep him and besides, he really seemed to like her…something most animals didn’t seem to do; not that she cared for those worthless muggle creatures. “What is that and why is it in the house?” Her step-mother demanded. Felix leapt forward and hissed at her. Alexa smiled. “My new bestfriend.” It was official; he was staying. |
62. Amortentia Alexa marched over to Will’s house after receiving word that he had made a major discovery. Up in his room she found him staring out the window. “So what’s the big discovery?” she asked impatiently. “I found out what my amortentia is…” He replied with a tone of uncertainty. She eyed her neighbour suspiciously. The way he had explained it the other day made it sound like a good thing—icky—but good nonetheless. “Then what’s the big deal?!”He had said he couldn’t wait to find out! He swallowed hard. “It’s the smell of your hair…” He stepped back slowly. |
53. Chase “Help! She’s going to kill me!” Will shouted, bolting through the front hallway with an angry 11 year old hot on his tail. “Get back here, Will, so I can break your face!” She threatened; narrowly missing the tip of is shirt. He had tricked her and she was thirsty for revenge. Before he left for Diagon Alley earlier in the morning he promised to buy her some chocolate frogs if she didn’t tell his mother where he was. Now he was back and very, very empty-handed; she was not pleased. “You should know better than to disappoint me William!” |
98. Pajamas Lex watched her father walk up the front steps with his new lady friend. He had said it was time to meet her and even though she was sure she didn’t want to meet the woman who would be replacing her mother, her father begged. It was cold and much too early for them to be having guests. She scowled as the two made their way through the front door. “Hi! Well aren’t you just adorable!” Amanda cooed, reaching over and pinching Lex’s cheeks. Her eyes shot to her father immediately. He cleared his throat. “Right…well I like your Pajamas…” |
59. Ignore Girl’s day out? Whose bright idea was this? Across from her was the most annoying woman that ever lived. “So what do you like doing?” “…” Was she expecting an answer? This game had gotten tired. Couldn’t she take a hint? Alexa hadn’t answered any question she asked yet she persisted. She could read the annoyance on her face, it was clear as day yet she kept trying. Amanda cleared her throat. “I noticed the drawings in your room…they’re pretty good…” “…” She turned her head slightly and found a trail of ants to watch. Anything was better than her. |
81. Depression Drawing the curtains shut, Alexa crawled into her bed, curling up with her stuffed Albino tiger. She couldn’t remember the last time she felt anything . Her eyes glanced at the clock on the wall; a little after 3. She sighed, thinking back to the days when that time had a special meaning. Now no matter what time it was there was always a lingering feeling of emptiness. By now she had cried so many times that she was positive she had run out of tears, but that didn’t matter, nothing did. When her mother died she took her happiness. |
21. Veela “Lex, what’s wrong?” Her father asked as she stormed into the livingroom. “All the boys in my class are acting weird around Ella and ignoring me.” Since lately none of them seemed to pay any attention to her. What was so special about Ella? “Well…Sweetheart…maybe it’s because she’s actually nice to the boys instead of…oh I don’t know—knocking them to the floor and drawing blood on the playground.” What was he trying to say? She was a nice person, she always called the nurse when she was done. “Nah, Will and I think she might just be part Veela.” |
52. Bore Tick, tock. Lex watched the hands of the clock moving from position to position as she waited for something to pop up and entertain her. With her father out shopping and Will sick there was nothing for her to do. It didn’t help that her father left Martha, the old woman that lived down the street, until he got back. Her eyes glanced over at Martha who was still talking. She nearly jumped when she realized she was waiting on a response. The old lady realized she wasn’t listening but how could you blame her? The woman was a bore. |
36. Muggle “Why can’t he come?!” Alex fumed upon hearing that her friend Jeremy couldn’t go to the park with her and Will. “Don’t you know anything?” Will challenged with a thick coating of impatience in his voice and an animated roll of his eyes. Lex glared up at him. He knew she hated when he started acting like a gown-up know-it-all despite his being only a year older. She watched him sigh before he tried again. “Because I wanna show you something that he can’t see.” “And why can’t he see?” “Are all you girls this stupid? He’s a muggle, remember?” |
27. Owl Alexa threw her bag unto the floor then headed for the kitchen. After a long day of school she liked pouring herself a glass of milk. Reaching into the fridge she heard a sudden flapping of wings. Turning, she saw a spotted owl swoop in through the kitchen window with an envelope in his beak. Her eyes danced with curiosity as she took the envelope then grabbed two knuts she saw on the counter. Once she saw ‘Howgarts’ she screamed then began jumping all over. She hadn’t bothered to read the entire thing; she had seen all she needed to. |
31. Dress Robes “I don’t think this will work.” Lex commented after being fitted with a robe that could swallow her whole—twice. Her father couldn’t possibly have wanted her walking around in something like this! “Hm…perhaps a smaller size…” This woman was a genius. She shot a glare over at her father. This could all have been avoided if he had known her size, then they wouldn’t be hunting the right fit. She sighed and rolled her eyes. If her mother was still alive everything would have gone smoothly. Ugh, men; they were never to be trusted when it came to clothes. |
39. Duel “Okay, you stand over there and when I say three turn and face me with your wand and shout a spell.” Will told her. Alexa nodded eager to have her first wizard’s duel. She turned and waited on the command. “Three!” “Ahhhhh!” Immediately Alexa ran over to him and tackled him to the floor. “What are you doing?!—This isn’t how—” “You think I’m an idiot?! I don’t know any spells yet you jerk!” With this she began whacking him repeatedly with her wand. “You want a fair duel? Well this is more fair than what you tried William!” |
69. Slap Whaaaap! The sound echoed throughout the room and down the hall. Alexa stared up at Amanda, momentarily stunned by the fact that she had actually had the nerve to hit her. She blinked twice, hoping clarity would arrive before she did anything rash. “Did you just slap me?” “So what if I did? Are you going to run and tell your father?” Alexa shook her head slowly. “…No…” At last Clarity had arrived. “Because then I wouldn’t get away with doing this!” With that she stomped down as hard as hard as she could on her step-mother’s foot then bolted. |
56. Fight “Alexa Cambridge, get your butt in here right now!” Came the stern voice of her father. She swallowed hard as she entered the room. She had already known that he would have found out about what happened between her and a kid in her class but she was still hoping. “Your teacher tells me you were in a fight today.” “He started it!” She tried in her own defense. Someone had to take her side. He raised an eyebrow at her. “She said you knocked him to the floor.” “Yeah…but he was looking at me funny.” It was his fault. |
97. Dictionary “I-E!” “E-I!” “Alexa , everyone knows ‘weird’ is spelt W-I-E-R-D!” Will exploded impatiently. This only made her roll her eyes. “No you dunce, it’s E-I! Look I have a dictionary to prove it!” She began skipping through the pages like a madwoman . “Aha! Weird, W-I-E-R-D—like I told you, see?!” She said. “Incendio!” Instantly there was a fire that spread rapidly. Alexa dropped the book instantly and shot him a menacing glare. She latched on to his neck and began shaking him. “Are you an idiot?! You better know a spell to reverse this before my dad gets home!” |
33. Classroom Children were jumping from desk to desk, throwing books and marking all over the chalkboard. Alexa, the ringleader, stood atop the teacher’s desk shouting and screaming in sheer pleasure. That teacher had chosen the wrong kid to mess with. When she got there she would see what the 11 year old was capable of. “That’s right, break it all! I want nothing left in one piece when that woman gets here!” She said before cackling madly. This would teach her to give star stickers instead of those useless hearts. To think this could all have been avoided if she listened. |
25. Sorting hat With sweaty palms she took a seat on the stool and waited patiently for the hat to make its decision. She really didn’t care where it placed her as long as it wasn’t a certain house she had been dreading. When she thought it was taking much too long she whispered, “Psst, how much will it cost for me to make my own selection? Name your price…” “Slytherin!” Bellowed the hat. “No wait! I’m sorry…” That didn’t work. She needed a different approach. With a softer tone she said, “I’ll be your bestfriend…” Hearing that, the hat went on deliberating. |
35. Pureblood Lex never thought it was possible but she had finally found someone more annoying than her step-mother; Darren, a 12 year old elitist that seemed to enjoy putting everyone down. “Hmm, Cambridge, huh? That’s a muggle name right? Though I’ll assume you’re a half-blood out of courtesy. Hearing that made her livid. Just earlier he had called Will a mudblood and made him cry. She didn’t have much time before they were re-joined by the grown-ups but she wanted to teach him a lesson. Without hesitating she punched him in the nose. “I’m a pureblood and don’t you forget it!” |
68. Roar. “ROAR! ROAR!” Alexa stomped around the house like a magnificent creature just learning to roar. Her step-mother walked into the room with the phone pressed to her ear and scoffed at her. “Could you go be a lion somewhere else? I am trying to use the phone” “ROAR!” She said with a spiteful grin. “Alexa!” “ROAR!” This time Amanda was fed up. She shouted upstairs in complaint to the girl’s father. “Your daughter is spitefully being a lion while I’m on the phone!” “Daddy don’t listen to her, she’s lying; I’m a dragon!” Then she turned to her again. “ROAR!” |
90. Present Alexa sat on her back patio with one of her favourite adults. She sighed heavily and leaned unto her. “Dia, do you think I’ll like it there at Hogwarts?” Now that the time was drawing closer she was starting to feel uncertain about leaving home and leaving her father. “What? Are you kidding me? Once you get there you won’t want to come home!” The woman knew this from experience and her little friend had nothing to worry about. “Yeah… you’re right… just promise me you’ll get rid of that woman before I get back. Amanda definitely had to go. |
94. Allergic It was late afternoon and Lex had baked some cookies. There had been a change in plans and Amanda wouldn’t be heading off to her office after all. This was what inspired her. “Mm, these smell delicious.” Her father commented when she walked out with the tray of cookies. She beamed over at him and held out the tray for him to take. She watched with satisfaction as Amanda did the same. Seconds later the woman was choking. “Sweetheart did you put cinnamon in this?” Her father panicked. She flashed him an innocent smile. “Is that what she’s allergic to? |
91. Future Her eyes searched those of the man sitting across the table from her. Not long ago a smirk had crept unto her face that she couldn’t dislodge. This was almost too easy. In the end it all boiled down to one thing; telling them what they wanted to hear. She didn’t care very much for this one nor did she for the several others before him but at this time in her she was bored. Could he keep her entertained? She didn’t know but he had potential. “So can I see you again sometime?” Her smirk grew darker in character. |
54. Dare “Alexa, I have something to tell you…” Lex turned to her muggle friend with expectant eyes. At the moment she was trying to get through the first chapter of Hogwarts, A History and he was wasting her time. “What?” “I really like you and think you’re pretty…?” He swallowed hard. “What?!” She was sure the annoyance was clear in her voice after having been interrupted for foolishness—foolishness! Jeremy’s eyes went wide. “Will dared me to do it, I swear! You gotta believe me! You know I’d never say that without coercion!” She turned slowly to her other friend. “William!” |
5. Astronomy Being out this late was quite relaxing. There was a gentle breeze blowing that could lull even the most hyperactive, vigilant student to sleep. It was no wonder that Alexa was seated to the back with her head against a wall and her mind on the other side of reality. In all truth she was trying to stay awake and well she loved the stars as much as the next guy but there came a time in every young girl’s life when she needed to sleep and unfortunately in little Alexa’s case this just happened to be during Astronomy class. |
13. Quidditch “That was amazing! Have you ever considered being a seeker?” The captain asked as Alexa landed. She shook her head stubbornly. “No way, I’d much rather be a beater.” “What? But you’re incredibly quick and lightweight. Come on!” Alexa stood, broom in hand, listening patiently to everything the tall boy had to say. Not much of it was relevant and in fact she was only listening out of courtesy but once she had heard enough she cut him off so she could interject. “Look,” she started with a sigh, “have you ever seen a seeker knock anyone off their broom?” |
14. Hogwarts, A History “Lalalala…” Lex hummed little tune as she busied herself late one afternoon. At the moment she felt so creative. Her father was right. She should have thought of it earlier. “Hey Lex, what you up to?” He asked, walking into the room. “making history more interesting.” She said without breaking from her fun to look at him. This made him curious enough so he peered over her shoulder. “Merlin, what do you think you’re doing?!” “Colouring Daddy…” “In your text book?!” She put down her crayon then looked up at him. “You’re the one who said to make history exciting.” |
51. Act Here was the moment she had been waiting for; the schoolplay. For months she had tried refining her acting skills and tonight was the night she would shine. Was she nervous? Not even a little bit. The world was her stage and in fact she was still waiting to receive payment for all the shows she did. Nothing in life was free and everyone knew she had a price; what 11 year old didn’t? The curtains rolled up slowly and the lights fell on her. She took a deep breath but before she could speak her alarm clock went off. |
83. Fearful It was a city-wide black out. Her father and Amanda were gone. Alexa and Jeremy walked around in the dark, squealing and running from any and every sound that was made. There was someone else in the house; there was no mistaking it. Entering her room they heard the door shut behind them. The two screamed and clung to each other desperately. “BOO!” Will shouted, jumping forward while shining the light from his wand at his face. He gave a maniacal laugh as he took in the expressions on their faces. “That wasn’t funny Will, I nearly sacrificed Jeremy!” “What?!” |
29. Pensieve Alexa was hopping mad. Someone had eaten her last chocolate frog and she was sure she knew the culprit. She marched over to Will’s house and pulled him before the pensieve that his father kept in their den. “I know you ate my frog and since you won’t admit it I’ll just check for myself.” She meant business. “What, are you nuts? I said I didn’t!” “Then gimme a tear drop and we’ll have this all sorted out.” “What? No way, I’m not giving you my tears.” He was definitely guilty. “You want me to make you cry?” She offered. |
63. Mooch In every muggle class there was always a mooch; the kid who borrowed your crayons and ate your cookies. Alexa was sinfully annoyed by the one they had. He always went asking for things instead of using his own and she planned to fix that. During lunch she found herself filling her half-empty juice cup with dirt. What could she say? She was bored. Then it happened; Justin walked up to her with an eager smile. “Hey can I have some of that?” “Sure.” She answered with a sweet smile. “Alexa!” Will quickly protested. “Gee thanks.” He gulped it all. |
92. Chocolate Omnomnom. The sweet deliciousness that was chocolate. Alexa dipped her hand in the bowl and drew for another piece. Ooo a chocolate frog. She snickered in satisfaction, throwing the whole thing into her mouth. The chocolate had strange effects on her and as William stood by watching the worry inside him was growing; soon she would be bouncing off the walls. “Lex…” She heard him say, “h-haven’t you had enough…?” From the corner of her eyes she saw his hand reach over and touch her bowl. “No! No! Mine don’t touch it!” She screamed. “Can’t a girl just be happy?!” |
15. Room “Oh my! Michael, it’s wonderful; you did a great job Honey!” Amanda squealed, jumping into Michael’s arms and planting a kiss on his lips. Alexa rolled her eyes at the sight before her. All her dad did was re-paint the livingroom and rearrange the furniture yet Amanda was acting like they had bought a new house! “So what do you think Lex?” He asked, leaning over so he was at her level. She sighed then took his face in her hands. “Daddy, please don’t get tangled in her stupidity, it’s the same room; all you did was change the colour.” |
8. Potions A little bit of this, a dash of that; this potions thing was pretty easy! After adding the last ingredient she began stirring but by then the Professor had made her way over to her. “Ms. Cambridge, just what do you think you’re doing?” “Familiarizing myself with the ingredients like you told us to.” She answered rather meekly. “The professor shook her head. “Yes, in the hopes of conjuring a cure for boils—what you are creating is a potent mixture that kills in seconds.” “Really?! Awesome! Hey Sarah, I’m gonna need you to drink this when I’m done, okay?” |
17. Cauldron Alexa’s dad had taken her shopping but she could tell that he was starting to get tired; they had been at it all day. Walking to the back of the store she found a cauldron that made her gasp before climbing into it. “Honey what are you doing?” Her father. “I’m making sure that I can fit inside, Daddy.” He raised an eyebrow at her. “Why?” She popped her head up so she was looking at him. “Because, if I can fit in here then Jeremy will be able to fit and then I can threaten to boil him alive.” |
23. Telescope Alexa and Will were atop her house and as promised Will had brought his telescope. The 11 year old couldn’t wait to start using it which was evident seeing as she had grabbed hold of it and begun scanning around. “No, Lex; you’re using it wrong. You have to point it into the sky to see the constellations, like you have Sagittarius right there—there’s Orion’s dog Major and—” She sighed in frustration. “William, will you get out of the way?!” She shoved him to the side. “You’re making it hard to see the inside of Molly Atkinson’s room!” |
1. Herbology Ah the end of yet another Herbology class and once again there was that kid that decided he wasn’t leaving her alone. Merlin, at one point she contemplated feeding him to their class project but then she was reminded that the plant wasn’t man eating. On her way out of the room she saw the Professor hauling in a massive plant. That, she was sure, could eat annoying little boys. “Now let’s get you fed.” Without hesitation she latched onto the boy’s robe to prevent his departure and pulled him over to her. “I can help you with that Professor.” |
10. Arthimancy “Professor, open up please!” This had been her 5th trip to the Arthimancy Professor’s office in less than a week—but through no fault of her own! The door swung open and she stood face to face with what might have been the most patient woman in the universe. “Yes Ms. Cambridge, what can I do for you this time?” “I know you said I should try and I promise I really did but now every time I look at numbers I get a headache and I don’t speak Russian!” “The homework is in English.” “You can’t convince me of that!” |
95. Snowball After a good bit of patting and smoothing, Lex had finally made the perfect snowball. It was round and palm-sized. She could have stared at it all day. “Don’t worry little snowball, you’re safe with me. I won’t let anything hurt you.” She would have cuddled it but she knew that that would have broken it. Instead she rested it on the ground and proceeded to make it a friend. This was one of those less destructive times for her. “Lex, you wanna—” Will ran up to her but could never finish his sentence. “Stay away from my snowball!” |
70. Spook Alexa and Will walked into the kitchen for some sodas. She saw her step-mother. “Watch this,” she whispered. “Hi Amanda!” The woman jumped in fright as she turned and stared down at her. Dropping the freshly cleaned pot she bolted from the kitchen, screaming. “What’s got her so spooked?” Will asked. Alexa shrugged nonchalantly, grabbing a grape flavoured one. “I told her young witches had the ability to suck the youth from those around them then pointed to a grey hair near the front of her head.” She looked to the doorway. “It was only a piece of string though.” |
78. Author’s Choice- Summer Camp Alexa hopped out of her father’s car and waited for him to get the luggage. He placed them at her feet then gave her a hug, already plotting the mischief she would get into once he was gone. Over the years she had made a name for herself which was evident as a boy passing by caught sight of her and bolted in the other direction. “Alright, Lex, I’m leaving.” “Bye Daddy, I love you!” She said, blowing him a kiss. “Play nice with the others.” “Don’t I always?” She said with a sweet smile. “That’s what I’m afraid of!” |
93. Chicken Alexa watched quietly as her father and Amanda planned the little details of the office party she planned to throw at the house. Just what she wanted, muggles walking around preventing her from practicing her spells together. Well if she was going to be miserable then so was Amanda. “So I was thinking we serve duck…or goose—but no chicken.” “Right, no chicken; that would be distasteful.” Her father said, much to Amanda’s delight. “Daddy, I don’t like any of those. Can’t we have the chicken…?” “Of course Darling, anything for you.” She beamed up at the now frustrated woman. |
86. Daring Sitting idly in the hospital room Alexa began playing around with the cast on her hand. She had no regrets. The jump had been amazing—and she didn’t even cry when she broke her arm. Michael rushed into the room after getting a call from her school that he needed to head to the hospital. “Sweetheart, are you okay? What happened?” He asked, tenderly taking her hand and looking at it. She smiled. “I was being a daredevil Daddy! I jumped from the top of the highest jungle gym!” He sighed. “You remember when I told you that there was a fine line between daring… and stupid?” “Yeah…which one was I?” |
64. Nap Sitting in the livingroom with the double doors open and her head resting on her father’s chest, Alexa soon found herself drifting. When her eyes finally re-opened the sun was setting and the room got darker. “Dad?” no answer… “Daddy…?” She ran around the house like a madwoman in search of anyone. In her mind this was Amanda’s doing. She underhandedly waited for her to fall asleep then stole her father… very clever of her. Running into the kitchen she found the two laughing. “Oh there you are Hon, did you enjoy your nap?” Her eyes widened. “I knew it…” |
40. Spell Lex walked into the kitchen and found her least favourite person in the world. Today this wouldn’t bother her because she was much too excited about other things. Putting on a wide smile she walked over and gave her a warm hug. “Amanda, I’m so glad I found you! You’re the best step-mommy in the world and I could really use your smarts and skills.” Clearly flattered to the point where she had forgotten all the evils of the 11 year old, she smiled. “Oh, of course, anything Alexa.” Alexa released her and drew for her wand. “Great, go stand over there so I can try out this new spell I learnt on you.” |
72. Vex The 11 year old was clearly upset. Her pout was present and her arms folded tightly at her chest. There would be no amusement park for her today. Her father walked in and couldn’t help but want to fix that. “Don’t be so vexed, we can go another day.” She sighed, ready to whine. “But I wanted to go today… this is all Amanda’s fault!” “Sweetheart she broke her leg, remember?” “Yeah on the day I’m supposed to have the best day ever she magically breaks her leg.” “…You were running through the house and accidentally knocked her down the stairs…? |
42. Portraits “Hey kid, don’t you have a class to get to?” Alexa froze where she stood then slowly turned to face the portrait. She had forgotten they could talk. This could be a problem. “Uh yeah… I’m headed there now…” “Well you’re going the wrong way. Head to class before I get you in trouble.” “Shut your mouth before you get you in trouble.” “Please, I’m just a portrait you silly child, what kind of trouble could you possibly get me into Alexa gave it a smug smile as she raised her wand. “You’ll know after I’ve set you on fire.” |
41. Thestrals Alexa’s eyes fixed on the magnificent creatures as they moved through her back yard. Seeing them used to terrify her when she was smaller, now she had come to love them. Occasionally she would go out and play with them but not tonight. Looking at them reminded her of her first sighting. One had been walking through the garden when they got home from her mother’s funeral. It had scared her but her father was able to convince her that seeing them was an honour. She didn’t believe that at first though now they always managed to make her smile. |
66. Pace By midnight Alexa had paced the floor of the livingroom at least a million times It was going to be so amazing and sleeping seemed like such a waste. “Lex, it’s after midnight, try getting some sleep.” “But if I fall asleep then I might not wake up ever again then the train will miss me then I’ll never get to go to Hogwarts.” This only made her pace faster. “…I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to wake up in a few—” “You can take the chance and fall asleep but I’ve got a lot more to lose here.” |
32. Common Rooms Alexa practically screamed the password to the defiant portrait. It might have been deaf; that was possible seeing as it refused to let her in. “I already told you I’m not up to no good this time, I swear!” This portrait didn’t seem to be on her side. “The common rooms are not meant for romping about in. I won’t let you in so you can have the place massacred!” The Portrait bellowed. She sighed in exasperation and sunk to the floor. “But… I just want to lie down for a bit…honest…” “You can lie here, I’ll watch over you.” |
6. Divination “Now I want you all to find an object and thus make a prediction.” This would be fun! Alexa looked around at her classmates and saw them fluttering about, looking . She herself pulled for her bag and dug through it for something nice but felt her face lose all colour shortly afterwards. Sitting in her bag was the Arithmancy homework she could have sworn she had handed in. She raised her hand slowly with a grave face. “Professor… I predict I’ll be in a lot of trouble later…” The Professor sighed. “Ms. Cambridge the inevitable cannot be considered a prediction.” |
77. Cheerful The birds were chirping, the sky was blue and Amanda leaving. Things couldn’t get any better in life for the 11 year old. She stood at window and watched with a wide smile as she got into the car and it drove off. When the car was out of sight she began a happy sort of dance. “Lex…what are you doing…?” “Happy dancing Daddy and you should too before it’s too late and she comes back!” There was a wide smile stretched across her face and her body wouldn’t stop moving. He raised an eyebrow at her. “She’s just going downtown…” |
26. Quill Such a strange writing implement. She picked up the quill and began looking over every inch of it. So this was what she would be using at Hogwarts. It sure was light…and she couldn’t find the rubber. Grabbing a sheet of parchment from her bag she began scribbling on it. Hmm…it did write nicely. It was decided; she would get her practice using it. The next day she took it to school and all eyes were on her. Finally tired of all the stares she looked up at them with an annoyed expression. “Haven’t you all seen a quill before?” |
43. Headmaster “Hey are you Alexa?” A kid asked after walking up to her at the Griffindor table eating with a few friends. She gave him a suspicious look. “That depends… who’s asking?” “Well the Headmaster wants to have a word with you.” Her eyes went wide. Rising slowly she made her to his office and threw open the door. “Sir I didn’t do it; it wasn’t me I swear!” She blurted. It was always important to get this little statement out in the open before any accusations could be made. He sat up in his seat. “What exactly didn’t you do?” |
9. Defense Against the Dark Arts “What do you do when you run into a vampire?” The Professor asked, making his way around the room, taking in the curious look on the faces of the first years. Alexa watched one of them raise their hand timidly. “You run…?” The girl asked. The Professor looked disappointed. “No…anyone else?” Well she might as well have given it a try. “Um…you throw the next guy at the vampire then you run…?” That’s what she would have done. “Ms. Cambridge would you really throw your classmate at a blood-sucking creature?” She nodded to the girl in the back. “Only her.” |
55. Egg on Alexa and Will stood before her father. They were both in trouble and they knew it. “Alright…which one of you decided that clipping the heads off Mrs. Fuller’s hedges and leaving them in the front yard would be a good idea?” The children pointed to each other. Michael raised an eyebrow at the two. “He’s the one who did it.” “Yeah but you were egging me on remember?” “You should have known better.” “Hey I was just listening to you!” Alexa looked over at him with wide eyes. “I’m 11! Which genius goes around listening to an 11 year old?!” |
79. Author’s Choice- Halloween “Trick or treat!” She said with a wide smile. “Aww, well aren’t you adorable…but um…what are you supposed to be?” This annoyed her slightly but the thought of getting candy made it all better. “Can’t you tell? I’m a witch.” She said, pointing to her wand and waving it once. “See, one that knows spells and everything.” The woman wasn’t convinced. “Then where’s your pointy hat and long black robe?” Alexa gasped. “That is very offensive! I’ll have you know we witches are very current on fashion and do not walk around in robes all day! How rude of you.” |
7. Care of Magical Creatures. “You think he’ll notice.” Alexa’s friend whispered to her as they watched the CoMC Professor petting their next lesson, the hippogriff. They had snuck out of the cabin the night before and taken him for a ride; he didn’t seem to mind. Alexa shrugged, looking over at the creature. “You think he’ll tell?” Her friend looked over at her. “I don’t think it speaks human Lex.” “Yeah but I’m positive the Professor speaks every language known to beast.” Just then the Professor turned to the class. “Who rode hector last night?” “I told you the thing would rat us out.” |
73. Warn Just a bit more… ALexa aimed the slingshot at an angle and prepared to fire when her concentration was broken when Will suddenly spoke up. “Alright Lex, I don’t want you hurting yourself, hand it over so I can show you how to use this thing.” He moved his hand over to the slingshot in an attempt to take it but received a side glare. “If you touch this thing before I get a chance to shoot I swear I’ll break your arm, clear?” Without looking away from the target. “As chrystal!” He barely managed to spit out. Warning received… |
16. Dragonhide Gloves “Are you mad? I’m not wearing those!” Alexa protested, tossing the gloves aside. Her father sighed wishing she wouldn’t be so difficult at this particular time. “Lex, this was one your list of school supplies…you need to wear it.” He tried patiently. She only shook her head. “I can’t wear those.” “Well why not?!” He asked in frustration. This didn’t jerk her one bit. Instead she looked up at him with calm eyes. “Can you imagine me walking with these then some dragon walks by and thinks I’ve killed it’s cousin—how do you think that will end for me?!” |
47. Portkey Thud. Thud. Alexa was woken by the sound of someone at her window. She opened her eyes slowly and saw a figured by her window. Approaching cautiously she realized it was only Will. She threw the window open. “What do you think you’re doing climbing to my window at this time of the night?” She demanded. “It’s a long story but I managed to lift my dad’s portkey from his drawer in the den. I need you to hide it here for a few days—” “Good night, William.” With that she shut the window and headed back to bed. |
44. Ford Anglia “Jeremy, what kind of car do you want to drive when you grow up?” Alexa asked her friend as the two sat out on the back porch. It was getting pretty late in the evening and the two were settling in for the evening. The question was mainly meant to be a distraction from the boredom. He shrugged. “I’d probably want a Ford Anglia, my uncle has one and he says they’re good.” She gasped. “Why would he go and get one of those?” “Why wouldn’t he?” “Not sure really but my Dad says you should never trust that car.” |
67. Quell “Why won’t that thing shut up?!” Amanda shouted over the screaming baby. “Can’t you make it quiet? I’m on the phone here.” Alexa looked over at the woman in disbelief. Did she think that getting a baby under control was the easiest thing to do? She watched Amanda leave the room and head into the next. Picking up the baby, she did the same. When Amanda saw the two she rolled her eyes. The baby’s hand caught hold of an object and hurled it at the woman. “Hey!” The baby giggled. “At least we know we have something in common.” |
48. Leprechaun “Hey kid, can I have your bike?” Lex called to a kid that was riding by on his bike. He pulled up next to her. “Pfft. What do you have to offer?” He said with a sneer. She smiled sweetly at him. “Just some gold I found on my kitchen counter she said revealing the substance to him. Without hesitation he hopped off the bicycle, grabbed the gold and walked off. “Sweet heart I would have bought you a bike, why would you give away gold?!” “Relax, Daddy, it’s Leprechaun’s gold, it won’t last more than an hour or two.” |
85. Snappish At the moment she didn’t want anyone talking to her. She had had enough of them. Since morning she had thoroughly told off at least three of them and to the others she was just a bit snappish. Never in her life did she imagine she would be placed in a class filled with imbeciles but after today she was proven wrong. Now she just felt irritable. A part of her actually felt sorry for the very next person who tried talking to her. Without a doubt they would be the one to receive the full brunt of her frustrations. |
45. Licorice Wand “I could really do with a Licorice wand.” Lex mused as she and her bestfriends, Will and Jeremy, sat on her front step. “Ooo is that like that wand that tastes like licorice and grants candy spells?” Jeremy tried. He turned out to be the only one laughing at his little joke. Alexa and Will exchanged glances. “What? Oh come on, you guys know that was funny.” The two snickered. “I think it’s more embarrassing than funny if you ask me.” Lex giggled. “And I think you’d find that candy wishes don’t cause as much harm as they need to.” |
74. X-tinguish ”Put it out! Put it out!!” She screamed as she watched the oven catch fire. Alexa watched Dia grabbed for the fire extinguisher and in no time the flames were gone. With the last spray the two fell to the floor. Alexa looked over at the woman. ”I thought you said you knew how to bake cookies!” She exclaimed. Dia shook her head. ”No…I told you I could get cookies, you just assumed that I could bake them.” Alexa looked over at her with wide eyes. ”Well is there anything else I might have assumed?” She felt so lied to. |
82. Careful “Hey kid, you slow down and quit running around like a madwoman.” Amanda called from her desk as Alexa bolted pass the door and headed down the hall. Lex didn’t feel like listening to her so she got to the bottom then ran back up. This time she was going so fast that she couldn’t slowdown in time to avoid a collision with a door that suddenly flew open. “What’s the big idea?!” She said, rubbing her forehead while glaring at the door. “Didn’t I tell you to be careful?!” Alexa scoffed. “I don’t know the meaning of the word.” “Clearly.” |
24. House Elf “Hey there little guys…” Alexa said as she snuck into the kitchen. It didn’t surprise her that they would be in here and actually she was glad they were still up. When they turned to look at her she gave them a smile. “Would there happen to be any cookies down here that I could munch on or have?” When one smiled and pointed to the oven she returned the smile with more than a hint of relief. “Great, because I’m promised this puffer I’d give him some cookies if he kept his mouth shut about me sneaking down here.” |
65. Ooze “Wow what happened?!” Alexa exclaimed when she walked into the kitchen and found her father looking at Amanda’s bleeding arm. “It looks so cool!” “Not right now Hon, Amanda isn’t really a big fan of blood, she’s already feeling a bit squeamish.” Her father said distractedly. Lex looked over at the disgust on her step-mother’s face then got the idea of the century. She made her way to the counter where they stood and leaned over to get a better look. “Ohhh so she’s afraid of blood? But whhhyyy, look how cool it looks, just oozing from her like that.” |
75. Yodel Alexa burst through the front door of Wills house and hurried inside. “Will, I heard something dying, are you okay?” Will ran into the room quickly and pulled her back outside before anyone could try finding out who had said that. She gave him a puzzled look. “What’s the big deal I came to help you…” Some people were just very ungrateful. She watched him sigh then turn to her with a patient stare. “Lex…everything is fine…my grandpa’s here.” She tilted her head to the side slightly, “Well is her hurt or something?” He shook his head. “He’s just yodeling.” |
18. Whomping Willow “Hey! Don’t you know you’re not supposed to go near that thing!” Lex heard someone call to her as she got closer to what looked like a half dead tree. Pssh, it didn’t look like anything intimidating. She took another step closer and this time the boy jumped at her knocking her to the floor. “Now listen to me young miss—” Just then the tree swung into action, knocking the wind right out of him. He stood gasping for a minute. “That was amazing! Is this the whomping willow tree?! I’ve been trying to get Justin here since Christmas!” |
80. Author’s Choice- The Dentist Appointment The old fan was creaking eerily above the 11 year old’s head. At a time like this she might have tried biting her fingernails if it weren’t for the fact that she had a chocolate bar firmly gripped in her hands. This was an important appointment and the more she thought about it was the more she munched away at the cavity builder. “Lex, stop, we’re about to head in.” Her father said. She looked to him. “I know…but he’s gonna tell me I have cavities anyway so can’t my teeth and I just enjoy our last bit of happiness?” |
76. Zap “Lex, be reasonable about this. Put the wand down so we can think this through like the rational wizards—and …er…in your case witch—we are.” Will pleaded as the 11 year old raised her wand to him She now had a crooked smile. “Will, we’ve already been through this. Surrendor the candy and everything will be all fine and peachy again.” She knew he had some chocolate frogs on him and she wanted them. “But I already told—” ZAP! This was getting tedious… she had been questioning him for three long minutes and her patience was now worn. |
60. Joke “Here you go.” Lex handed Amanda a tall glass of lemonade—only because she had made it and she wanted to show off how nice it tasted! She watched the woman take the glass and look over at her father before taking a sip. “Ugh, this tastes terrible!” “What?!” She blurted, “Lemme taste it!” She poured a glass but before she could drink it she heard Amanda laughing. “Relax, it was a joke. This taste lovely.” -___________________- She watched her take another sip. “I spat in that.” Amanda spat out the drink immediately. Alexa smiled. “That was a joke too!” |
49. Yule Ball “So what are you wearing to the Yule Ball?” Lex heard her friend as while they were up in the dormitories. She leaned back onto her pillow and shut her eyes, trying to block out the world. “My PJ’s.” “You’re not going?” “Nah.” She sighed, opening one eye to look over at her friend. “It’s simple. I told Nikki and Carter that I would go with them both but now I don’t know how to tell them that I don’t want to go with either of them so I figured the best thing to do is just not show up.” |
20. Hogsmeade “Alright, let’s go. We’re gonna go looking for adventure in the forbidden forest.” Lex said, jumping up and grabbing hold of her friend. She had been bored for all morning and couldn’t take it anymore. “You said you wanted us to find something interesting to do right and what better way to spend a Saturday than running for our lives or dangling in the hands of danger?” Her friend sighed. “Do you ever think of doing anything safe when you’re bored, I mean, we could just go to Hogsmeade instead you know.” “Yeah…we could…but there are so many witnesses there…” |
38. Patronus “Hmm…what do you think your patronus is?” Lex asked, turning to her friend as the two lay, sprawled off in her back yard. The day had been a pretty slow one for the two. She watched him shrugged before turning attention to the clouds again. “I don’t know…but I hope it’s something cool…” “Yeah, like a turtle!” Will shot up immediately and looked down at her in slight disbelief. “I was thinking something a bit scarier than that, actually much scarier.” Her eyes widened. “You want your dad to be your patronus??” She was sure that wasn’t how it worked…. |
28. Timeturner Lex had just eaten what might have been the best piece of chocolate in the world…but she never really savoured it the way it was meant to be savoured. She sighed heavily. “Times like these make me wish I had a timeturner.” A girl that was passing by heard her wishful thinking and scoffed. “Typical first years, always wishing for the impossible. Alexa rolled her eyes. “You just watch, when I find one you’ll be the first person I try it out on.” Glancing down she saw something glistening. An evil smirk crawled onto her face. “I hope you like repetition.” |
58. Hoot It was just after the spring performance and Lex found herself getting a lecture—and for no good reason either! “Young lady how many times do I have to tell you that hooting is both inappropriate at the theatre and very unlady-like behaviour?” Ms. Owen fumed. Lex made a face as she looked up at the woman. She sighed. “I don’t see what the big deal is, all the boys were hooting and for the last time; I’m not a lady so stop telling me what ladies are and are not supposed to do.” What was so wrong with hooting? |
2. Muggle Studies Alexa sat on the back porch with her bestfriend, having a nice little chat about wizard subjects. Jeremy wasn’t liking the conversation because Will had successfully managed to make him feel like he didn’t fit in with them. “Hey, don’t look so down, I think you’d ace Muggle Studies.” Will said with a stifled laughed. Lex looked over at her friend; he looked hurt by the statement because they had explained what muggle meant to him quite some time back. “Don’t worry about it Jeremy, the only subject he passes is lunch and he’s only pulling that off with a B.” |
46. Dungeon The walls were damp and cold…the floor was no better…so this was a dungeon. Lex took a minute to walk the length and width of the room, trying to get a feel for it. When the Professor said she would be serving her detention in the dungeon she wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. So it wasn’t all that bad. Psssh, what was everyone always complaining about. Dungeons were kinda…cool…she could get use to this! She took a seat at the furthest wall. Suddenly the chains connected to the wall sprang to life and wrapped themselves around her. O_________O |
37. Animagus It was just pass midday and Alexa found herself chasing what seemed like a very determined pigeon through the house. With her father’s old baseball bat in hand she took a few swings at it. “No, Lex, stop!” Her father called after her. Finally her father cut infront of her and grabbed hold of the poor, frightened thing. “What do you think you’re doing—it’s just a bird!” He walked over to the window and let it go. “Daddy why would you do that?! For all we know that could have been an animagus trying to learn our secrets!!” |
30. Feast The start of term feast was well underway and the little firstie had settled in among some familiar faces. There was food as far as the eye could see but she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. Aha! Reaching around into her small bag she emptied contents on the table. Now it was a feast with the pile of candy just within reach and a wide smile on her face. “Can I have some of your candy.” She turned slowly and saw another first year nervously looking over at her. She forced the smile to remain on her face. “Sure.” |
3. Transfiguration “Okay for this exercise I want you all to think of something you’d like to change—anything at all but keep it within limits.” She heard the professor say. Immediately the hands went up and answers began pouring in. “I’d make my bag smoother!” “I’d probably make my shoes coarser—for grip and all.” Lex found some of answers quite amusing. They all wanted to do petty transfigurations. Hmmm. What would she change…? “I’d change my step-mother…rearrange her face a little.” The professor looked over at her in shock. “Ms. Cambridge!” “Whaaaat? It’s not like she can get any uglier. |
4. Ancient Runes “Ms. Cambridge please lift you head from the desk and at least try to pretend that you’re paying attention.” The Professor scolded once he caught her with her head down again. “But Professor…” She whined. “I was pretending, I was pretending really hard too and now my head hurts because it was actually starting to learn some of this…can’t we all nap for a bit.” The Professor sighed and shook his head. “Honestly, do you think you’ll learn when you have such a mindset against the subject?” She scowled. “No…but they said I had to come to the classes anyway…” |
11. History of Magic Alexa curled up under the Gryffindor table, watching all the legs walk by. The break was over and everyone was meant to head to their next class—but not her. She had snuck down to the kitchen and spent too long down there, forgetting she had outstanding HoM homework. She was doomed “Alexa?” Someone called. She groaned…not her… The girl got on her knees and peaked under the table. “Aren’t you gonna head to HoM class? We can walk together.” “Oooorrrrr, you can walk over and I’ll stay here.” The girl sighed. “You forgot about your homework again, didn’t you?” |
12. Charms Alright! Charms class and now she would finally learn to use the piece of wood in her hand. Wow…just think, soon she would be able to stop whacking people with her wand because she would actually know some magic!! The idea nearly had her dancing into the room. “Good morning Professor.” BEAM. “I can’t wait for us to have a magic-filled class.” The Professor sighed at the eager little firstie then turned to get the lesson started. “Alright, get your books and we’ll read about simple charms. “What?!” She nearly flew up from her seat. “Haven’t I done enough reading?!” |
