Default Space Chamber

The immediate impact of the Space Chamber is the all encompassing darkness, but following closely might be the feeling of vastness. As if someone had snuck a shrinking spell upon those that enter there is something about the universe, even if only a simulated one, that can make one feel small. Gaseous iridescent colours provide light as do the rest of the heavenly bodies above head. Each shift starts with dusk sky that becomes darker the longer one stands in the room until nothing but the stars and bodies above are visible. The shift for the day has ended as the sky gradually lightens from black to introduce the blue hour. More than just projections, the celestial bodies, nebulas and spiral galaxies have the ability to form very life-like magical simulations of the conditions one is bound to find in the deep cavity of space. A light stroll or in some cases a sensation of weightlessness or flying will easily and quickly propel one to one's target destination whether it happens to be Io or the horsehead nebula or perhaps a closer look at a black hole.

Along with the Time Chamber and Hall of Prophecies, this chamber forms the Unspeakable Triangle of Knowledge.

A single star amongst the countless in the Space Chamber begins to glow a bit more brightly than before. Turbulent and vibrant, this particular star's constant tug of war between gravity pulling in and pressure pushing out ... had reached an imbalance.

It was only a matter of time now...

Adam has gotten lost. Instead of taking a left – right – left to enter the Ever-locked Room/Love Chamber, he must have taken a left-right-right and entered the…Well, where was he? He stood a few feet away from the door and looked around. He hadn’t been in this room before. Had he?

He should really leave. After all, he had things to do in the Love Chamber…potions to brew, a plant to prune, star charts to plan out…Oooo shiney! His ADHD was kicking in and well, now that he was here, he might as well look around! He just wouldn’t touch anything. Nope, hands to yourself Mr. Gerulf….he told himself. No touchy… And to make sure he didn’t get the urge to poke around in places he was better off not – um – poking, Adam stuck his hands into his pants pockets.

He took a few steps forward into the room and felt as if his feet were a little lighter, as if he was walking on a cloud. “Ungerade,“ he said aloud in German.

Ungerade indeed.

Without warning, the single star's core could take no more. Collapsing upon itself, the star exploded in a flash of blinding hot white light.

Adam had been floating around a little, or at least that’s what it felt like. Lights twinkled around him and drew his attention this way or that. From time to time he noticed a constellation or star formation that he was familiar with, but Adam’s knowledge of the heavens extended only as much as he needed to know for potion brewing. Astrology had never really been his strong suit.

But in the midst of enjoying his misadventure, suddenly a flash of blinding light exploded in the room. “AH!” he screamed, caught completely unaware. His arms instinctively covered his head. His head hurt. His eyes throbbed. His skin felt both hot and cold at the same time as if he had suffered a really bad sunburn at the beach.

But worst of all, he couldn’t see anything.

Perhaps his eyesight would come back shortly. He stood/floated in place, not confident enough with his memory of the room to do anything else. Eyes blinking blindly. Nothing seemed to be getting brighter or clearer.

...

After what felt like a short eternity, Adam couldn't take it anymore. He hadn't heard another person or thing in the room.

"HALLOOO!!!" He called our loudly. It was too bad the poor German man hadn't ever learned to summon a patronus...because man, right now it would have been very very helpful.

Subtle at first, perhaps you do not even notice initially, you begin to be pulled about the chamber towards black void created by the collapsed star much like bathtub water before it goes down the drain. It's pull is strong, enough so that you could escape under the right conditions and to permit your voice to carry.

Should anyone be listening.

But how long do you have before the pull becomes too strong to escape? The pull has already begun to tug strongly on your limbs as is, perhaps enough to pull a joint or two out of their sockets.

Wowza!

It had been an uneventful lunch, which of course meant that it'd been a perfect lunch. He'd had his usual salad--tomatoes, roman lettuce, zucchini, perfectly sliced cucumber--accompanied with exactly one bottle of mineral water. Then he'd a steaming hot of chai tea accompanied by one of the almond cookies he'd baked the night before. He'd ruminated over what he'd have for dinner later and if Giovanni, one of his cats, would finally accept the harness he'd been trying to saddle it with for over a week. All in all, a boring lunch time, and being the fairly boring person that he was, Brighton was actually perfectly content by the time he marched back to the Space Chamber.

He thought little of the combination of sounds seemingly coming from everywhere in the department; it wasn't like anyone in level 9 had precisely the most regular of the jobs or that the results of certain experiments or examinations could be in any way predicted. Loud noises that could signify things being dragged around or objects shattering weren't necessarily out of the norm. And so the issue only really became an issue until the man barged into the his area of work--as he always did, after exactly sixty minutes of lunch time, no more and no less--and realized that there was something terribly wrong going on.

Or terribly right. Brighton always did think that such things depended on one's point of view. His remained undecided long enough to realize that he was being slowly, but quite obviously dragged by the obvious appearance of a black hole in the middle of his turf. Without his permission. And he noted, too, there was a man he vaguely remembered from that ridiculous therapy session all those months ago whose name Brighton could not remember just then, but knew was a fellow unspeakable. A potioneer, maybe. Adam Gerulf? But, most importantly, he was really going to have some choice of words for Flamsteed if this managed to ruin over a year worth of work.

"What did you do?" To be clear, that was not at the man who looked to be doing little more than floating in the direction of the gaping black mouth of the black hole. His exclamation had really been more at the room in general and maybe even at Flamsteed, wherever it was that the man was at the moment.

Swiftly, he cast locaritus on himself, hoping the invisible armor's weight would be enough to slow down his arrival at the black hole and to protect him from any other external factors that may or not occur. After all, he had little idea--by which he meant, absolutely none--of what was happening at the moment. Dark magic or any sort of foul play could not exactly be ruled out right away, certainly not without first seeing what would happen if the thing swallowed someone whole. Did it even work like a real one would? Or was this something else entirely?

He supposed he ought to help the bloke. He could feel the pull still, so doubtlessly the man did as well.

Brighton sent a patronus to Flamsteed instead, his Aardvark marching off, carrying a very succinct message that said, "Your space chamber had a baby and it's a black hole. Yes. I did say black hole. It's about to make me its lunch. Actually, its about to make someone else its lunch, so I might be the dessert. Or maybe we're both just snacks. It's fairly big, two men might not be enough for it. Anyway, not looking forward to having someone else cash in my insurance gold because I died, so this is for sure an emergency." And just to make sure the point was driven home, a string of colourful Norwegian curses were added at the end.

And now, the guy. Brighton groaned, the black hole's pull still doing its work albeit more slowly than before. "You still alive, Gerulf?"

No use on wasting time on someone who was already dead. This was not the death chamber.

Adam was fighting the urge to run or flail or do anything besides mentally freak out. And mentally freak out he was doing - in a splendidly grand manner he might add. He was alone and blind and uncertain of anything. He was just thankful that he had enough experiences with odd happenings and bad explosions and other oddities that he knew enough to well, do nothing. So...float he did. Float and remain still and mentally freak out and pray that someone would find him or his sight would come back and he he could find his own way out.

I'm going to die...die alone...all alone....who's going to feed my fish? What about my plants...I left that rug hanging outside on the line. I can't let that get ruined....it really pulled the room together! And then his mind drifted off to worry about his potions. Yep. Adam needed to get a life.

Of course it didn't help that the longer he 'floated' there, the stronger the pull on his body felt. Slowly his arms started being pulled forward. Was he moving? And which direction was he moving in? Something about the situation made him believe he was floating away from the door. Which--could---not be good.

Perhaps it was time to start flailing around....He wiggled a little, but it only felt like the pull was getting stronger.

And then...he heard something. Was it his savior? Or was his ears just playing tricks on him.

Nope....nope....someone was in the room. It was amazing how quickly his hearing had adjusted to compensate for his lack of eyesight. But wait....was someone really blaming him for whatever had happened? Seriously if this room was that tenuous of a place, then there really should have been better locks or warnings or charms or all three on the door! The idea that his was his fault got him so angry he couldn't think in English anymore. As Adam tried with all his might to think of a scalding retort in English he felt the pulling intensify and his right shoulder popped out of it's socket. "ARGG!" Pain flooded Adam's body and his brain reverted back to his first language as he began cursing loudly in German.

More and more celestial objects were being pulled within and while the black hole had no real mind of its own, it seemed determined to suck up at least one Unspeakable today. Locaritus does indeed help, but only a hair as the orientation and magnitude of the black hole spin, increase, and intensify ... go so far as to capture the cries of the German Unspeakable.

Not even sound can escape its influence now...

Adam was still cursing in German, but he was pretty sure that nobody was listening. Maybe he had just imagined that someone was in the room with him. He certainly couldn’t hear anything else and if someone was going to help him that really wasn’t much the poor German man could do to help whomever was trying to help him. The pain in his shoulder intensified as the tug on his body seemed to get stronger. Something clearly had a grip on him and it wasn't about to let him go.

I’m gonna die... he thought forlornly as he tried to struggle against the hold on him. I’m gonna die and there’s so much I haven’t done. His thoughts then shifted through everything he had wanted to do…taste Spam in Hawaii, buy a house, munch on Rattlesnake in the American West, get a pet that wasn’t a fish, try Escamoles in Mexico, create that hybrid orchid/lily, eat udon in Japan, swim in a waterfall fed pool, sample jellied moose nose in Alaska, kiss someone, find out what turtle soup like or if it even was made from turtle…

Lost in his food doomed thoughts, Adam floated towards the black hole, arms stretched out in front of him as if he were Superman flying across the sky; a pose he might have found funny in other circumstances. It was sad really, Adam was too young with too voracious an appetite (for life) for him to die. He had always thought he’d die because he eat a bad Fugu, not because he’d BE eaten by something.

A black hole.

The man had survived dementor attacks, an acromantula invasion, fairy tale possession, an old age curse, subzero chort migrations, Anastasia Truebridge, and fatherhood (so far)...and it almost seemed like a cruel joke that he was now facing off against another instance of certain doom by astronomical means AND he was not even doing so upon achieving his lifelong dream of space travel.

Life could have at least thrown him a bone in that regard.

But one thing at a time, Flamsteed. One thing at a time.

Calculations and theorems encompassing Hawking radiation, loop quantum gravity, electromagnetic force, and other boyish physics fantasies swirling about in his noggin, Airey administered a few protective charms upon his person as he quickly made his way toward the Space Chamber - which was impressively easy to accomplish considering the pull from said black hole was helping the process. What was unnerving, however, was that feeling of crossing the event horizon...or approaching it. One of the, er, blessing of this not being outer space was that certain dynamics in regards to the astronomical phenomenon were not entirely at play. Though the logistics were still present.

Fascinating, really.

However, calculations and a hankering for some Italian (which always came when he considered spaghettification) soon came to a stop as he planted one of his obnoxiously loudly colored shoes into the chamber. He felt a bit of a beguiling chill take hold as the unfiltered silence of the space and the astronomer knew precisely what was taking place.

Well, this would certainly make things more difficult now, wouldn't it?

Flourishing his wand once more, Airey conjured a series of ropes which he secured around the fortified door to the Space Chamber and tossed one at Brighton first - mostly because the gent was closer than his German counterpart AND he would need his Evolutionist to be secure for a rescue attempt seeing as Adam was rather incapacitated at the moment. Giving the rope around himself a firm tap, he offered the Unspeakable a quick glance and some embellished hand gestures in hopes of conveying some sort of plan to him.

Either that, or the department head looked rather like an excited toddler.
