Muggle Worthy Excuse Committee Office (M.W.E.C) A gleam of light catches your eye and you notice the giant nameplate bolted to the biggest desk in the room, reading: The job of this committee is to think up a good way to explain or cover up any magical incidents that could not be explained or erased from the minds of Muggles. This job requires you to THINK like a Muggle; that means completely forgetting about anything having to do with magic! Come up with a good news story, then submit it to the Head's office. |
Mona entered the familiar office; it was almost as comfortable as home. Her polished wood desk was surrounded by magical plants; a large bookcase behind her desk was filled to bursting with everything from One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi to a Muggle encyclopedia. She settled herself behind her desk and began shuffling through her papers; she'd of course left her desk in a right state the previous evening. |
Mikalya walks into the office with a few minutes to spare. She carries a large bag over her shoulder, which is bursting at its seams, and carries a few parchments in her arms, with what looks like quills poking out of her pocket. She smiles at the other person sitting at their desk, and reading their name plaque, realises thats its Mona, her division head. Mikalya makes her way to her desk and puts her parchments ontop of it, she opens her bag and pulls out a few bits:-more parchments, ink, a small potted plant, and places these around her desk. She sits down on her chair and hears a "snap", standing up she pulls the quills out of her pocket, a few of them obviously broken. She shrugs and places all the quills on her desk, seperating the broken from the unbroken, and places the broken in a drawer, intending to deal with them later. She sits back down and begins to re-organise her desk, waiting for the first job to come in. |
"Good morning," Mona said merrily. She circled her desk and extended her hand. "Mikayla, am I correct? What's all the parchment for?" |
Mikayla stood up and ran her hands quickly over her clothes to straighten them. She extended her own hand and met Mona's, shaking it and answering the question "Yes, its Mikayla". She looked at all the parchment on her desk and looked back up to Mona smiling. "Its my first job, and I wasnt sure what I would need, so I came prepared, you never know when a piece of parchment will come in handy". |
Mona grinned. "I'm sure you'll find that we're quite overstocked with supplies," she said. "Of course it can't hurt to keep them around, though." She leaned against her desk, hands folded against her lap. "Please tell me about yourself, Mikayla. I'm afraid Madeline knows the most about you at this point, and as it's just you and me in here I think we really ought to know each other's favorite Quidditch teams," she said, a merry glint in her brown eyes. She liked her so far. Articulate, earnest.... |
"Better to have too many than not enough" replied Mikayla. She sat back in her chair "Hmm, well as you know, my name is Mikayla, but my friends call me Kayla. I attended Hogwarts and passed my OWL's and NEWT's. After graduating I took some time out for my self and travelled the country. When a position became available to work here, I jumped at the chance and applied immediately. My favourite Quidditch Team......I have to say its Holyhead Harpies, not only do they only hire witches for their team, which is a good starting point for any witches wanting to pursue a career in Quidditch, its is also from were my family comes from, so although they might not do well in the matches or the World cup, its a team close to my heart. May I ask what is your favourite Quidditch team?" |
"I'm afraid I'm a Prides girl, myself," Mona said. "Have you met the others in the department yet? I daresay they'd love to meet you." |
Mikayla shook her head "No, not yet, I came straight here. Wanted to take a look at the office. But now that you mention it, meeting our co-workers sounds like a good idea, get to know each other better before the real work begins, build up a good team spirit." Mikayla stood up, and excusing herself, walked out of the office and made her way to the breakroom, with the intention of popping in to introduce herself to the rest of the department. |
Madeline hurried into the office, completely flustered. She plopped an envelope on the nearest desk, said a quick "Good morning!" to the office, and then hurried out once more. Quote:

"Well, that's just ridiculous," said Mona, looking over the new assignment. "How would this Muggle have even seen the Mandrake? I mean, were they unpotted at the time? And how can one know what they truly saw if they passed out cold right after? I wonder where they came to...what say you, Mikayla?" Mona quickly scribbled a note on a memo and sent it soaring out of the office door. |
Just as Mikayla opens the door to the office, Madeline comes rushing out. I wonder whats happened?. Mikayla walks to Mona's desk and spots an assignment, left by Madeline. She reads what the assignment says and grabs some parchment and a quil from her desk, and uses a levitation charm to move her chair from behind her desk, to Mona's desk so they can work together. She sat on the chair and made notes as she spoke. "Hmmm,we could maybe pass it off as mistaken identity, like maybe the witch or wizard was gardening with their child, and what they thought they saw was really a baby crying. If the witch or wizard was in a greenhouse we could say the heatwaves from inside the greenhouse distorted what the muggle saw. With the muggle passing out we could also say it was a leaking gas pipe, and that the gas knocked them out, causing halucinations at the same time." Mikalya stopped writing, and looked up at Mona, waiting to hear what she said |
"Oh, those are very good ideas," Mona said. "I was thinking of common garden and greenhouse pests that we could pass off as a Mandrake. I just sent a memo to Madeline asking where they woke and how large the Mandrakes were. Depending on the age of the Mandrakes we could pass it off as some sort of creature...." Mona's brow furrowed in thought. |
Mikayla nodded her head, "Thats a good idea, something like a venus fly trap." She sat back in her chair and waited for the memo to come back off Madeline |
"Oh, that's good too," Mona said. "I wonder if they have Venus flytraps in the greenhouse? I was thinking a wayward squirrel or perhaps a mole." |
"Oooh, I never thought of blaming an animal", Mikayla said, continuing to make notes. "I guess the more ideas we can come up with the better the choice we have". |
A memo soars into the office and lands on the Head's Desk Quote:

"Hmm," said Mona, reading over Madeline's memo. She flipped quickly through a Muggle encyclopedia and found what she was looking for. "Gases commonly emitted in greenhouses... agricultural activities... nitrous oxide!" she said. "Nitrous oxide causes hallucinations! Dentists use it as an anesthetic...." She scribbled quickly on a piece of parchment. "A wayward mole was burrowing in the greenhouse soil; however, it appeared to be a humanoid creature due to a build up of nitrous oxide and excessive heat in the greenhouse, thus causing hallucination and faintness." She looked up from her parchment. "What do you think, Kayla?" |
Mikayla stopped writing and listened to Mona. Once Mona had finished Mikayla smiled "That sounds excellent Mona." |
"Do you think so?" Mona asked. "I don't want to send it to Madeline if there are ways to improve upon it, and there always are." |
Mikayla lifted her quill to her pursed lips. "Since the scream of the mandrake knocked them unconsious, and one of the muggles can actually remember seing them, maybe we add an excuse about the scream, incase they question it." she suggested, wanting to make sure all things were covered. |
"Oh, good point," said Mona. She scratched her hair a little. "The squeal of the mole upon being discovered?" |
"Perfect." said Mikayla remembering the moles she used to have in her garden in the Family Home "I can't think of any other areas we might have missed." |
"D'you think we might want to say 'squirrel' instead?" Mona mused aloud. "Aren't they more common pests than moles? Then again, squirrels don't burrow...." |
"Possibly a mouse or rat?" suggested Mikayla |
