About a month ago we asked our members to submit essays telling us about a song that reminded them of a scene in Harry Potter. (See the contest announcement for more details). You submitted your essays and we picked out the best three. Each of the authors will be receiving a copy of the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire soundtrack.
Congratulations to *alohamora*, narglesRnifty, and dans_grl431!

The song that reminds me of Harry Potter is Follow Me Home by the Sugababes. It reminds me of the end chapters 27-30 in the Half Blood Prince. This is sad part of the book and this is a powerful, yet sad, song. For me, it is kind of like a soundtrack to these last chapters, which I will admit made me cry!
There is a part of the song, just before the chorus that says:
“Sometimes, life it drags you down and plays you like a fool,
Makes you feel so insecure it can be so cruel”.
This reminds me of when Dumbledore dies and Ginny has to practically drag Harry away from his body. To me it kind of describes the atmosphere of what is going on and what has just happened. I think it was cruel how it happened and it was hard on Harry, well the whole school but it would have affected Harry the most. When I read the part where Harry kept going through all of the horcruxes that were left as if they where a ‘to do’ list I couldn’t help but imagine this song in the background.
In the chorus it says:
“Follow me home, you’ll never be lost,
Wherever the storm, whatever the cost,
I won’t walk away; I’ll stand by your side,
I’m here for you, the rest of our lives.”
The chorus reminds me of many parts of the last chapter – The White Tomb. First of all it is quite a slow song so it works fits in with the funeral. It also reminds me of when Harry breaks up with Ginny, and she knows exactly what it is for. The main thing it reminds me of though is near the end of this chapter where Harry tells Ron and Hermione that he is not going back to Hogwarts that he is going to go looking for the other horcruxes because Dumbledore would want him to. When Ron and Hermione tell him they are going with him this is basically what the end of the chorus describes. “I’m here for you the rest of our lives.” This made me think about when Ron and Hermione told Harry they were with him whatever happened. It shows how close they really are.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry is sitting by the lake at Hogwarts after Sirius Black has died only hours before. This is an extremely emotional scene in the book and can be related to the song “The Scientist” by Coldplay. Harry feels responsible for the death of his godfather because he believes that he was the one who caused Sirius to go to the Department of Mysteries. He is slumped down on the bank of the lake, crying quietly as he “stares out over the gleaming water.”
Harry had gone to search for his godfather, thinking that Voldemort had taken him. I had to find you, tell you I need you. He and his friends had no idea about how to save him, only knowing that they had to, despite all odds. In the Department of Mysteries, there was a room with twelve doors, and they guessed as to which one to go into. I was just guessing at numbers and figures/ Pulling your puzzles apart/ Questions of science, science and progress/ Do not speak as loud as my heart.
After they realized that Sirius wasn’t there, the Death Eaters show up, tormenting them. There is no way that six kids could ever defeat the Death Eaters, and so Harry and his friends cause a distraction and run for their lives. Running in circles, chasing our tails/ Coming back as we are.
While Harry is sitting by the lake a day later, he is thinking about Sirius, knowing that life will never be the same. His one hope of a family has vanished as he realizes that the only guardian whom he had known and loved was now gone forever. Once you have known love, life doesn’t seem whole without it. Harry had finally found a guardian, and perhaps would have lived with him later on, only to have that ripped apart with Sirius’s death. He is back to where he was two years ago- an orphan with no true family or home. Nobody said it was easy/ Oh it's such a shame for us to part/ Nobody said it was easy/ No one ever said it would be so hard/I'm going back to the start. Quote: narglesRnifty

“The Book of My Life” lyrics by Sting "It’s the book of my days
It’s the book of my life"
The Harry Potter books are definitely the books of Harry’s days and it’s quite a journey not for him as his life progresses, but a journey for the readers also. Harry’s life, like everyone’s, has its ups and downs but he has no desire for a written record to be made about it. Time and time again, he shuns away opportunities for money and fame. It seems all Harry wants is a nice, quiet normal life. "And it’s cut like a fruit on the blade of a knife"
Like when cutting a fruit, you know what you have to do to get the fruit from its whole state to sliced pieces; the same goes for Harry. He knows what he has to do. He has to defeat Voldemort as a whole by first dealing with the smaller pieces (Horcruxes). You might not be trying to defeat an apple but slicing it up into pieces exposes the inner core and increases the surface area making it easier to get as much out of the apple as you can. If Harry collects and destroys all of the Horcruxes, then the last of Voldemort’s soul is left unprotected and exposed so it’ll be easier to get to his “inner core”. "And it’s all there to see as the
section reveals, there’s some sorrow in every life"
Harry loses Cedric one year, his godfather the next, and then the one person he most admires, Dumbledore who is somewhat of a fatherly figure to him. But this fact of life helps the reader(s) connect to Harry closer which is a plus. "If it reads like a puzzle, a wandering maze
Then I won’t understand ‘till the end of my days"
Harry’s whole life is a puzzle and that includes more than just the 3rd task. He’s still piecing together his past and creating his own vision of his parents. And yet, there are some things that are left unexplained like Dumbledore’s injured hand in HBP. "There’s a chapter on love where the ink’s never dry"
My HP chapter of love is in HBP, chapter 14. The steps Ron and Hermione take to a further their relationship seem like plausible steps at first though jealously turns them to take harsh measures and both end up miserable at the end of the chapter. And that new monster awakens inside Harry when he sees Ginny with Dean. What can be said, even now, romance isn’t out of the picture. "There are sentences served in a prison I built out of lies"
Harry unintentionally creates his own “prison” by telling Umbridge the harsh truth about Voldemort’s return so he serves written sentences in detention because he so-called, “told lies”. "For the end is a mystery no-one can read
In the book of my life"
This is completely true seeing as the 7th installment hasn’t been released yet.
