Hello and welcome to KasTan. I’m Maxie for those of you who don’t know me, the author of a previous one-shot on SS called Love Takes Two && another [finished] fic called Ecstasy: A Marauder Time Romance – Sa13+

For readers of my old fic, be warned. KasTan is an absolutely different FF from Ecstasy, based more on reality than on some romantic fairytale. It’s all about life’s rigour: Frustration, anger, hesitation . . . and heartbreak. In short, it will be way different from Ecstasy. I’ve always written very slow romance, but this might actually be just boring, boring, boring, one-sided romance.

The name of one of the main characters [Tanzeel] is actually based on a guy I know, but this story has nothing, I repeat nothing, to do with people form real life. And now, on to some boring but very necessary things:

Plot Summary:

Faztel Academy of Enchantments is a magical, day school located in the heart of an area inhabited almost entirely by muggles. Its aim is to give muggle-born wizards and witches who face trouble in attending magical schools like Hogwarts, a chance to receive magical education.

Main Character:

Kashan Aleen is the only child of two extremely conservative, superstitious and suspicious parents – The kind of parents who consider flirting a vice, and falling in love an even bigger one.

Having seen more than most, Kashan has not remained unaffected; what she has seen at home has made her violent (though only when it comes to loggerheads, and she doesn’t do that without a reason), confident and fearless. And yet she is also an absolute prankster and joker, always quick to laugh – someone with a smile that is always there at the right time.

One drawback one will find in Kashan, though, is actually caused by her extreme daring: She never turns down a challenge. When it comes to proving her fearlessness, Kashan Aleen is always and forever ready.

And, just in case any of you are wondering what the top banner says:

Banner # 1: How many tears have flown unknown, speaking of storms and distances when barren is land. We always have to do what we would rather not.

Having studied at Faztel for the past three years, with this as her fourth year, Kashan had grown more attached to Faztel than anyone knew.

The only thing that she did not like about it was the way their classes were arranged: Royal-Blue and Goldam had a different timetable, and Red-Den and Greensoph a different one. The four houses never did have classes together.

Kashan wasn’t exactly pleased about that.

And there was a very simple reason behind that, too – Her best friend was a Royal-Blue while Kashan was a Greensoph. Perhaps the only good thing in this whole affair was that Lily was a muggle, too: Unlike many others who had to skip lessons to meet, the two could to resort to telephone calls.

“Been a long, boring day, eh?” she said to Lily as she slung her deep, red and sable schoolbag over her shoulder and made her way out into the grounds too, once all the classes had emptied. The ponytail her super curly hair had been tied into was extremely loose by this time of the day; it always was.

Lily nodded; tall and extremely fair, she had few matches in beauty in their year. Kashan, though shorter by an inch or two, had a different sort of beauty; one that only trained eyes could see. She was fair, yes, but that was not all one could see in her. Her tied, brown hair fell across her shoulders with a natural elegance, the curliest in the whole school.

But it was her eyes and smile that held the real beauty: fathomless, brown eyes that seemed to have endless secrets stored in them; that expressed the pain she had suffered for so long – fights between her parents that she always became entangled in, constant bickering, a superstitious family - and a smile that, despite it all, was always full of humour and goodwill, flashed at every little joke and every little comment; a smile that was always quick and ready - A smile that pleased.

“Anything interesting happen today?” Kashan asked as they began to walk towards the school gate. Lily tutted in reply.

“Does anything ever happen in Royal-Gold that’s worth mentioning?” she asked, pretending to sigh as she glanced at the royal blue badge she wore.

“Well, seeing how you have the ten most studious students of our year in your class – I’d say no,” Kashan replied, laughing.

Lily laughed, too. “Well, our class isn’t that boring, you know,” she said, in a more serious voice. “We’ve got the biggest pranksters ever, too.”

Kashan nodded. “I’ve defo heard of your class’s reputation for trouble-making,” she replied thoughtfully. “But, personally, I really don’t know any of them that much.”

Lily’s face fell slightly at Kashan’s last statement. “You don’t want to know what they go around doing,” she said with a shake of her head. “They drive all the Professors crazy.” Shrugging, she popped an Oreo she had just unwrapped from a bag of biscuits in her mouth.

“And d’ya know Tanzeel? That guy's too full of himself for his own good. According to him, no one, no one at all, can make him mad. Ever.” She winked at her best friend, emphasizing as much as possible on the phrase “no one at all.”

Kashan arched an eyebrow upwards. “He’s mental,” she said dispassionately. “I bet I could drive him up the wall in hours.”

Lily hid back a smile. “I bet you can’t, Kash,” she said in a mock disbelieving tone. Kashan flared up at once. “Could too,” she insisted, arms folded.

Lily had been waiting for this moment. “Prove it,” she said at once. For a single millisecond, Kashan looked taken aback. Then a look of supreme unconcern passed over her face.

“Lily Asaif, you’re an idiot,” she said coolly. “I’ve already proved I can do just about anything a million times before. Besides, this Tanzeel guy? I don’t even know him properly, for heaven’s sake.”

Lily snorted. “Are you telling me you’re too scared to go up and talk to a guy?” she asked evenly.

No, Kashan thought to herself. Only, my mother would kill me if she knew I was talking to a boy I don’t even know anything about. When she made no audible response, Lily raised an eyebrow.

“Well, here’s your newest challenge then, Miss Aleen,” she said cheekily. “Prove Tanzeel wrong – if you have the guts, that is.”

For a moment, Kashan was dumfounded. She knew she loved to let big-headed people know that they were too full of themselves. But Tanzeel? – she didn’t even know him. Then again, this was a challenge, and challenges weren’t there to be turned down.

“Deal,” she said firmly, turning around to face Lily.

Tanzeel, she thought to herself as she climbed into the bus that would take her home. Now, what have I heard about him? He was Prefect, and he was a Goldam. That was all she really knew about him.

“Oey, Sadi.”

The fourth grade corridor was almost deserted after school, with only a few students wandering around. The girl who had been singing the song – she was, apparently, yet another muggle; Faztel had lots of them – turned around, her clearly curled reddish brown ringlets swinging forward to conceal her forehead and bright, blue eyes.

“Kash,” Sadi Andrews said brightly, walking elegantly over to Kashan. “Haven’t seen you in forever. Where have you been? Anything special up?”

“Oh, not much, really,” Kashan replied. “The usual. I finally managed to get my eyes on someone, though,” she added, getting directly to the point – Kashan knew it was never any use trying to fool Sadi in these matters. The girl was too clever when it came to love.

Sadi laughed. “Remember when I told you last year that you’d fall in love with someone when the time came, and you insisted you weren’t going to?” she asked, eyes twinkling in her usually, charming way. “So, who’s the lucky guy? You told him yet?”

Kashan smiled faintly. “I don’t think he considers himself so lucky,” she said truthfully. Sadi looked back at her in disbelief. “Impossible!” she said, her eyes widening very slightly. “Which boy couldn’t be glad to know you’re in love with him?”

Kashan only had a one word answer to respond with:

“Tanzeel.”

Comprehension dawned across Sadi’s features. “Oh,” she said, her face falling slightly. “Wrong pick, Kash. He’s not the type. He’s too stuck up about his looks, grades and popularity. I thought of trying for him at one time, and then decided against it. No offence, but he doesn’t seem worth all the trouble. Not when you can get so many other, just as handsome boys. There’s no scarcity of them around Faztel, anyway, if I’m getting my point across.”

“I was hoping you wouldn’t say that,” Kashan replied. She half-wished Lily was here to talk for her. “That’s why I came to you in the first place – For advice.”

Sadi shrugged. “Well, the best I can give you is to shut your eyes every time he passes, and forget he even exists. Period.”

Kashan shook her head. “Not that kind, Sa,” she said doggedly. “Come on, you’re supposed to be the resident flirt here, aren’t you?

Sadi laughed. “Yeah, I am,” she admitted. “I would still tell you to move on while you still can.” Seeing the determined look on Kashan’s face, though, she frowned. “Okay, okay, so I get it. None of the moving on lecture, right? Have you tried talking to him?”

Kashan shook her head. “Well, yes and no,” she began hesitantly. “It’s just that he doesn’t seem very interested in talking. He doesn’t seem interested in having anything to do with me at all.” She quickly narrated everything that had passed in the past week or two.

“You ruined everything when you tried to infuriate him that way,” Sadi said immediately. “It was all over the school.”

“Hey, no fair!” Kashan protested. “How was I supposed to know I’d end up falling for him!”

“Oh yeah, that’s a problem, too,” Sadi said thoughtfully. “I heard you turned down David Raymond?”

Kashan nodded.

Sadi gave her a thumbs-up. “I did, too. He didn't exactly ask me out, but he tried to, week before last. Super jerk, that one. As if I don’t know he’s an absolute player. Interesting to note, though, that he hasn’t gone out with anyone else since you refused him. Usually, he gets together with someone else less than a day after he breaks with some other girlfriend of his. I’d say he’s finally fallen for you. And not just in his player-ish way, either; only because you turned him down, though.”

Kashan raised an eyebrow, having no idea where all this was going. “What’s David got to do with this whole Tanzeel business?” she inquired. “I mean, I need a way to be able to talk to Tanzeel on friendly terms; if that is even possible. Isn’t there a way he can’t possibly ignore me if I go up and talk to him?”

Sadi nodded. “There is, and David’s got literally everything to do with it,” she said seriously.

“Huh?” Kashan said. “I’m not sure if I understand.”

“Get together with David,” Sadi replied quietly.

I just don't know you that well and was feeling too shy to post anything *blush*. I think you've really awesome potential as a writer. I finally plucked up the nerve to post because...

SS has been acting up, lately, and not letting me get on. I FINALLY managed to open KasTan, though; man, am I glad. So, without further ado - an update. =D

“WHAT?” Kashan asked, her mouth falling open.

Said nodded. “I know, I know, I never though I’d live to see the day when I would advise someone to get together with David Raymond,” she said, scowling heavily at the mere mention of the boy’s name. “But it’s the best way out in your case, Kash, trust me.”

Kashan knew Sadi too well to think the girl was playing some sort of prank on her. When it came to giving advice on love related matters, Sadi Andrews never, ever joked. Trying not to bite her lip, Kashan said only word: “Explain.”

“Tanzeel can’t get out of talking to you if you’re his best friend’s girlfriend,” Sadi began. “David would kill him if you broke up with him because Tanzeel was a jerk to you; and Tanzeel knows that, too. Take it this way: Tanzeel would hit a friend back if he hit him, but he also happens to be the kind to care very, very deeply for his friends. At least, I know for a fact that he cares for David – a lot. They aren’t best friends for just any reason. He would never do a thing that would, directly or indirectly, hurt David.”

Kashan was now beginning to understand what Sadi was getting at. “So more time with David means I get more of a chance with Tanzeel, right?” she said, slightly hesitantly. “And when I’m sure Tanzeel and I’ve become too good as friends for him to ignore me again, I break up with David.”

Sadi nodded. “That’s the plan.”

For a moment, Kashan was quiet. “I can’t do that!” she finally blurted out.

“Why not?” Sadi asked, surprised.

“That would be cheating on David,” Kashan pointed out. “First I would be getting together with him without even actually liking him, and then I would actually be using him to get together with his best friend. The shock would kill him, when he finds out.”

“I think David needs to be used and cheated on,” Sadi replied coldly. Her tone was always cold when she spoke of David. “It isn’t as if he doesn’t two-time, double cross, use and cheat on girls, himself.”

Kashan remained silent. On one hand, Sadi’s plan could not have sounded more appealing; Kashan was almost bursting to attempt it. On the other hand, Kashan knew she had never been the type to get together with a boy she despised with all her heart. Even if he was the best friend of the love of her life.

“Decided yet?” Sadi asked.

Kashan shook her head. Then she abruptly asked, “Be honest, Sadi – What do you want me to decide?”

Sadi shrugged. “It’s your choice, Kash,” she said at once. “You can either get together with David, or say goodbye to the chances of ever getting your Tanzeel. Personally, I would be happier if you forgot that Tanzeel even exists because, and I confess it openly, I’m going to feel like a total jerk every time I see you with David.”

Kashan tried not to bite her lip before nodding. Sadi’s advice had, instead of making things easier, made them even more difficult. Way more difficult.

“I need to talk to Lily about this,” was all she said.

“No, no, and no,” Lily said angrily. “David Raymond? Sadi Andrews is definitely losing her touch.”

“Sadi told me she didn’t like the advice she was offering, herself,” Kashan reminded her.

“She’s still losing her touch,” Lily said firmly. “Because, honestly, even I could come up with a better plan.”

Kashan blinked. “Go on, tell me your plan,” she said sarcastically, knowing fully well that Lily Asaif had no plans in that brilliant brain of hers to tell.

As could have been expected, Lily looked highly taken aback. Then, seeing the smug look on he best friend’s face, she folded her arms against her chest. “Well,” she said, clearly thinking furiously. “Ha! Got it! You could always let David know you’re interested in him, and then he’d force Tanzeel to be nice to you, because he wants you to get together with him. Err ...” she trailed off, looking sheepish.

“You mean I pretend I’m interested in him, but don’t get together with him?” Kashan asked sarcastically.

“Forget I ever said that,” Lily said, still sheepishly. “I’m no Sadi Andrews, and you fully well know that.”

“But – but – but –”

“But what?” Lily asked, both eyebrows raised sceptically.

“But that’s a brilliant plan, Lil!”

“Wha –?”

Kasha nodded enthusiastically. “That was just the little modification Sadi’s plan needed,” she said excitedly. “I just realized how perfect this will be; David will definitely have to force Tanzeel to be on better terms with me, if he’s sure I’m ready to give him a chance. I would still be, well, sort of using him, but at least no one can say Kashan Aleen got together with a boy and then cheated on him. This is bloody brilliant!”

It was Lily’s turn to look astounded now. “You aren’t telling me you’re going to act this out, Kash,” she said, looking mortified at the very thought.

“Oh, but I so am,” Kashan replied, positively quivering with delight. “I so, so am.”

Lily looked stricken. “And I’m dead,” was all she said. “I’m so, so dead.”

Okay. So i kept seeing how absolutely obsessed with KasTan you are, (ie: with tanzeel. with tanzeel. with tanzeel.) *grins* And i've heard other people talk about it, so i decided. There's no way i'm missing out on this one. So i came and read it! All in one sitting too!

I have one question though, How do you say tanzeel? Is it eel as in peel or eel and is elf. (LOL) for some reason i thought it was eel as in elf..

But yes, i love this! I love the way it is so far from hogwarts- yet it's still in JKR's world. I love the characters too. You've done it again! Brilliant!
