Young Snape actor talks 'Order of the Phoenix'

Newbury Today has featured an interview with Alec Hopkins, the actor who portrays Young Snape in 'Order of the Phoenix'. He speaks about how he got the part, his scenes and what is was like working with Alan Rickman.

Alec revealed his resemblance to the famous actor had helped him land the part, which sees him play Snape in a flashback to the Hogwarts teacher’s youth. A former Kennet School and Newbury College pupil, Alec was put forward for the role by the director of the local Shining Lights theatre group, Peter Watt. After sending in some pictures, Alec was called in for an interview, but faced a nerve-wracking four-month wait for news that he’d secured the part.

“Alan Rickman spent a couple of hours having a chat with me about the part and obviously that was nerve wracking; there was me as a nobody and then this famous actor. He’s very serious about acting but he likes to joke around. It was really nice and it surprised me - I thought a big star would be different but he was so nice.”

“The part is pretty easy as it’s such a small scene, but because the character has been portrayed by someone before, it’s about taking someone’s characteristics and trying to copy them. I watched how he moved, spoke and the emotions he goes through. He also gave me some pointers about the character – how he would walk and hold himself, like keeping a straight back.”

The newspaper also notes that prosthetics were used to make Alec look more like Snape and the young actor even watched the previous films to get a feel for the part. Alec also notes that he hopes Young Snape makes another appearance in the last book.

I know I may be biased here, but he doesn't look anything like Alan when he was young!
Alan was gorgeous with bright piercing eyes, shiny hair and clear skin! But I suppose he is more like a young Snape - greasy,spotty and with a more doleful look in his eyes. I hope he plays the part well!

I reckon he does look like alan rickman a bit, you just have to imagine him in costume, obviously Alan Rickman looks nothing like snape in real life lol
but yeah, I reckon he'll do a good job, do you think this guy will be doing the flashback scenes during occlumency lessons? I suppose he would do as it wouldnt really work.

I think that Alec looks like him when he was young, I also think he will do his best at playing young Snape for this movie, and I can't wait for it to come out.

Good interveiw! Both Alec and Alan seem like really nice guys, and I am eager to see how Alec does in the next movie(one of my fav scenes in the series).

I saw the previous pictures of him dressed up for the role as Snape. And he looked great there, so I really can't wait to see him acting the part :D
