Robert Hardy talks Harry Potter

In an interview with the Daily Mail to promote his new BBC2 drama Margaret, about Thatcher, the first female British Prime Minister, Robert Hardy (Fudge) talks about the hardships of working into old age (he's 83) and how he found he wasn't in Half-Blood Prince.

Quote:

The insurers for the Harry Potter films were insuring me for a massive amount of money and being extra reluctant about it. I could almost hear them saying, 'Is he worth it? He's broken most of his bones, he's had cancer and he might drop dead at any moment!'
Quote:

I loved my time as Cornelius Fudge, Minister for Magic, but my character has now been erased! I knew it would happen, because he's quite a good part in the book, but there was no way they were ever going to fit everything into one film.

All three producers rang me up, separately, on the same day to give me the news - so I was told three times. They said, 'We're so sorry, we're having to cut the book by half,' so that was the end of that. I was very sad, because of the amusing and wicked people I worked with, like Robbie Coltrane, Michael Gambon and Maggie Smith, who is an old friend. It was such fun to film, and there were so many laughs on set that it was hard to come up with a sober face just before they shouted, 'Action!'

Mr Hardy did a great job as "Minister of Magic" Another of my favs was his role in "All creatures great & small".
Shame but we've known for some time that "the other minister" story line wasn't going to be included - Dumbledore's inheritance will probably be passed on by Percy Weasley!!?!

EmmaRiddle 02-15-2009 11:12 AM

^ Wasn't that done by Scrimgeour in the book?

I didn't think Scrimgeour was being cast - or hadn't been yet?

EmmaRiddle 02-15-2009 11:25 AM

He hasn't.

Padie 02-15-2009 11:28 AM

^^ Yes, it was Scrimgeour who did that *nods*

Guess we won't see the first chappie from the book then :/ Ah well, I guess it wasn't that vital x)

I agree that he was a perfect Fudge. It's too bad that he won't be in the rest of the movies. They have to cast "Scrim"; they'll need him when the hands their inheritance. Percy shouldn't be the one doing it because that would make him too high up in the Ministry. Right? If they had included the Muggle Minister, wouldn't it be nice if he were played by Former PM Tony Blair?

half_blood_prince 02-15-2009 08:35 PM

awwe, that sux he was cut from the film, i wish they didnt cut him that way at least we can get to see him one last time.

Aww I'll definetly miss Fudge! What are they going to do with the scenes with him in it? =/ Would've been better with him.

Zoe 02-16-2009 02:21 AM

It's a shame that he won't be in HBP. And I think that they kind of made a bit of a mistake not having someone casted for Scrimgeour so everything would work out for DH. But I suppose they'll find some way to pop Scrimgeour, if they even have him in the films at all.

lillypotter.7 02-16-2009 11:19 AM

Those bits would involve way too much exposition.

I'm pretty sure it would've been John Major.

Fudge was a great character. He will be missed from the films!

My crush sometimes gets mad, he's usually nice
But he certainly has cheated death at least twice.

Chocolate frogs are the treat I crave. Don't know why but they put me in a daze.
