John Hurt to film Deathly Hallows: Part I scenes in November

While promoting his upcoming film An Englishman in New York, actor John Hurt spoke about portraying Ollivander in both Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Deathly Hallows. John noted that he's done his work for Part two of the seventh installment, and will finish his work for the first segment later this month.

You're returning to Harry Potter for the final films having appeared in the very first one, how has it been to come back?
JH:
I've filmed one, which actually is the last one, and now I've got the penultimate one to do which is in November, and that wraps it all up. It's a big loss for Britain in terms of having a big studio movie here, but it's not representative of our culture in terms of the films that we make. I am convinced that though Pinewood and Shepperton -- the big studios -- playing host to big movies is very important, our film business is in the independent world. Of that I'm convinced.
He also spoke about British films and how they are affected financially.

Quote:

Do you think the big franchise movies shooting in the UK give a false impression of the health of our industry? All these productions move in and hire local talent, but they aren't British films.
JH:
No, they're not British films. Even Harry Potter isn't a British [franchise]. We gave it to Warners, we just sit and collect. That always infuriates me. I do think huge areas of the industry are being neglected and we've lost the ability for middle-budget films. When we did have a stronger industry -- and not just a business -- we did have room for middle-budget films. They've gone out of the window, as they've done in America as well, but a $20m picture would be wonderful to make every now and then. We could do a lot for that.

But it's like any country, if you don't have a lot of money to spend. And it's interesting seeing how much money gets spent on Harry Potter. It's quite absurd, really. I watch it and think it's just the same as Hollywood. I look around and you've got three costumes there, none of which are likely to be worn, and they're all replicas of each other. It's a vacuous waste of money and it drives me insane.

YEEEEEEEEEEEESsssssssssssssssss!

Thank.YOU!
It was getting a bit uncertain there for a while, but so so SO GLAD he's gonna be back to film :D
Mr Hurt is the awesomest actor to play Mr Ollivander *skips around*

Glad to see him back. I think his scene in Philosopher's Stone is quiet uncomfortable and perfectly pitched

The man has an excellent point. Less and less mid budget films are being mad and it's a shame. When you think of the films that are classed as mid budget: Atonement, Walk the Line and others. Flims which feed the brain are going to get rarer and I think it's a tragedy.

laura-tonks 11-04-2009 06:57 PM

So glad he's back! :D

Glad he's back as Ollivander.

While I feel for his frustration about the industry, I wouldn't diss it too much, Hurt. That industry, no matter how big or Hollywood it is, is employing you in the biggest movie franchise. Forgive me if I don't bring out the violins.

Shannon :hello:

so glad this man will be back...i do hate it when they change actors...unless it is for a very very good reason

OtterySt.Catchpole 11-04-2009 07:42 PM

I say we all make independent films ... *goes buys a camcorder*

He's decrying the loss of small budget films, which tend to have more quality and more emphasis on character and less on ginormous sets and 20million a movie per actor budgets.

It's like if you went to McDonalds and all you could get was everything supersized.

I have to agree it is sad *takes out his violin* I miss good films without special effects.

bonnieginnyfan1 11-04-2009 07:56 PM

I'm glad they have the original Ollivander back!

Welcome back the best wandmaker of all time!!!!

RedheadQueen 11-04-2009 08:43 PM

Well, I am glad he is back playing Ollivander, but in this economy I think he should be grateful any income is coming into the industry. I mean, Warner Bros may be an American Company, but they kept everything else in the UK, so that has to count for something. I don't know..... I just can't wait for the movies!!

We knew in July, at least, that he was back.

SO this means part one will definitely be stopping somewhere around Shell Cottage!! Awesome! I'm so excited he's coming back to play Ollivander!! :D :woot:

Some of his comments are really annoying, but I agree. It costs over 200 million to make one of the Potter films and that amount increases more and more each time. But the films ALWAYS make the money back and then some...and like he just said...they're not really British films. So all that money doesn't come from the British economy, it comes from America...so I guess it also benefits America as well. So I see where he's coming from. Most real British films are independent because the film industries don't have the money to make films as big as Harry Potter.

No actaully it doesn't. Voldemort tortures Olivander in part one. That's likely to be the scene he still needs to film with Ralph Finnes who is currently shooting with the rest of the cast. Shell cottage happens in part two.

Anum 11-04-2009 11:30 PM

Good for him!! Glad he's back, he's an excellent Ollivander...no one quite like him!

JohnRossRotterdam 11-04-2009 11:45 PM

I'm so so grateful that he's back becsuse outside the fact that his scene with Daniel was not the best, i don't want want anyone else to play Mr. Ollivander

Speaking of Daniel by the way,

Today i read on the website of a dutch newspaper that we'll see Mr. Radcliffe totally naked in Deathly Hallows.....
According to director David Yates, Daniel will have to fight with a mysterious creature and while he's fighting, he has a vision of kissing a woman when he is naked....

How about that??????

princess of*hp* 11-05-2009 12:34 AM

Very insightful, Mr. Hurt. ;)

Becksibee 11-05-2009 12:42 AM

YAY John hurt is back. He is so awesome. I got excited when I found out it was him doing the voice of the Dragon in BBCs 'Merlin'. I said to my mum "I recconarse that voice. I think it's Olivander." She said his name and I said it was. :D

best deatheater 11-05-2009 01:05 AM

Yes! Excited he's back. In his brief scene in PS he did so much and its great to see an actor with some brains and real passion for how things are done. Good show John!

JTuck 11-05-2009 01:28 AM

He is definitely the best Ollivander.

dannylover 11-05-2009 04:34 AM

I'm so excited to hear that he's returning!
