Jo "felt terrible" after finishing Deathly Hallows

In an exclusive interview with Associated Press, J.K. Rowling discusses her personal experience upon finishing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, how her mother’s death influenced the series, and the stress of being Harry Potter’s creator.

J.K. Rowling "felt terrible for a week" after finishing the final book.

Quote:

The first two days in particular, it was like a bereavement, even though I was pleased with the book. And then after a week that cloud lifted and I felt quite lighthearted, quite liberated.

Finishing is emotional because the books have been so wrapped up with my life. It's almost impossible not to finish and look back to where I was when I started.

The final book is what it was always supposed to be, and so I feel very at peace with that fact.

Harry's story comes to a definite end in book seven, Because the world is so big, there would be room to do other stuff, I am not planning to do that, but I'm not going to say I'm never going to do it.

I can never write anything as popular again, Lightning does not strike in the same place twice. I'll do exactly what I did with Harry – I'll write what I really want to write, and if it's something similar, that's OK, and if it's something very different, that's OK. I just really want to fall in love with an idea again, and go with that.
Jo also spoke a bit about her mother who passed away at age 45 from multiple sclerosis 17 years ago.

Quote:

My mum died six months into writing (the books), and I think that set the central theme – this boy dealing with loss.

I think children are very scared of this stuff even if they haven't experienced it, and I think the way to meet that is head-on, I absolutely believe, as a writer and as a parent, that the solution is not to pretend things don't happen but to examine them in a loving, safe way.
Jo also touched on the extreme pressure she’s been under as Harry’s creator.

Quote:

I was very lonely with it. It's not like being in a pop group, where at least there would be three or four other people who knew what it was like to be on the inside. Only I knew what it was like to be generating this world as it became bigger and bigger and bigger and more and more people were invested in it.

First to postie! Well, duh! I would feel terrible, too, If i just ended something the world was in love with.

emmawatson-fan4eva 07-20-2007 09:00 AM

Aww I love Jo. I would feel terrible too, I do feel terrible knowing that there won't be another HP book after this one, but I will definately be reading whatever book Jo writes after Harry Potter. Everything has to come to an end eventually. :(

harry__dan 07-20-2007 10:32 AM

Yeah! wen all all of us were bombarding the ideas abt how the story shud go and all tht, jo must felt really frightened, all of the world was looking upon her to end tht story and its quite QUITE responsiblie thing to do

Great interview,
I'm soooo excited!
It's going to be the best book ever!!

PinkFish 07-20-2007 11:12 AM

When she said... 'The first two days in particular, it was like a bereavement'... does that mean that Harry is more likely to die? Because I'm sure she wouldn't feel like that if it was a minor character. I know that she means by finishing the book she feels like shes lost something, but its making me think, whos going to die? :(

druidflower 07-20-2007 11:13 AM

i'm kind of sad that's all coming to an end too. i'm excited to read it, but also sad.

ps. notice that it's a bit quiet around here today? guess we've all got better things to do ;)

pps. pink fish, when i finish working on a play or a story, i feel that sense of bereavement, you just get very attached to the world at the characters and knowing that you aren't going to be involved with them so intimately and having to say goodbye is in its own way, heartbreaking. so don't worry, it doesn't necessarily mean harry is going to get it.

carola9146 07-20-2007 11:18 AM

I think a lot of people are feeling the same. It's so exciting to have the book just hours away - to finally know what is going to happen. But sad to know this is the last one...

I have never been this excited about a book before - it's amazing. This has been a wonderful part of my life.

I agree it has been a great part of my life. I'm so excited about DH, I keep getting the shivers, but it's bittersweet, as I really don't want the series to finish. I'm interested to read anything that JK Rowling writes after Harry, but I feel a bit sorry for her, as Harry Potter is such a hard thing to follow. I just hope people will understand that when judging and reviewing anything else she writes, as it's going to be really difficult for her.

Wow...what an essay...

bitsyandtank 07-20-2007 12:49 PM

I would be sad as well. A major part of her life is now over.

Waterloo 07-20-2007 12:52 PM

It must be awful for her.. HP is like a part of our lives but for Jo it must be like one of her children..

Hagridlover101 07-20-2007 01:15 PM

:ron: :albus3: OMG that\'s so sad!! Yeah when I finish reading this book i\'m definetely going to be an emotional wreck..oh gosh....*starts to cry*:hermy:

Mrs Felton 07-20-2007 02:38 PM

It\'s not surprising she felt terrible. Harry\'s been a huge part of her life!!

SeverusSnapesLover 07-20-2007 02:54 PM

I bet it was really hard after writing the 7th book. I mean, as a reader, I\'m struggling with the fact that there will be no more theorizing what will happen next, no getting excited about another book coming out soon. I think it does help, though, that there is still two movies left to come out, so there is something to get excited about. But it just won\'t be the same. I hope JK does find another good series to write. I think it should be unrelated to HP because all good things do indeed need to come to an end. I\'m pretty sure she will come up with something else because she is just such an amazing writer and so imaginative. And maybe us fans can have another bunch of books to be excited about. That would be terrific!

Hermionespell 07-20-2007 03:33 PM

I love you, Jo. You\'re wonderful and I thank you for everything that you have done. I am a devoted fan of not only HP but also Jo\'s writing, so I\'ll definitely be reading anything else that she writes. ^_^

HarryPotterlovr101 07-20-2007 03:43 PM

It makes me soooooo sad that its coming to an end, its the end of an incredible era. I will read whatever Jo writes after this, shes an excellent author and has an incredible ability to connect with millions of people

hpnerd5000 07-20-2007 03:56 PM

dumm dumm duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! i would be the same way too if i just finished something that was sooo dear to the world

AllieFelton 07-20-2007 04:14 PM

It makes me feel a bit sad as well but all good things must come to an end eventually and we have the next 2 movies to look forward to

harrypotterbabe 07-20-2007 04:27 PM

Awww poor Jo,
yeah i guess she would feel that way, especially with all the emotional up\'s and down\'s that came with the finishing of the book.
