Video: Emma Watson talks Hermione & Tale of Despereaux (UPDATE #2)
While talking about her recent voice-over work for The Tale of Despereaux, Emma Watson worried that she would be putting too much of Hermione Granger into the role of Princess Pea:
Quote:
"I guess I've had paranoid moments where I will hear something in my own voice, and go, ‘Gosh, do I sound like Hermione there?' I definitely had an awareness of it because I've played her for so long and she is so distinctive and she is so much a part of me. But Pea was more gentle. I instantly felt like a different person or character playing her. I was worried about it, but it worked out OK."
She had to deal with a lot of emotions within the solitude of a recording studio.
"A lot of my performance is quite physical in the film because I've been kidnapped and there's a rat in my room and whatever. It was hard getting all of that into my voice -- the emotional and the out-of-breath and the screaming. But it was fun. I was actually given a toy Despereaux who I could speak to, so I had a kind of substitute."
UPDATE: Emma also briefly talks about how The Tale of Despereaux compares to the Harry Potter series:
Quote:
On the surface, the 18- year-old Watson might seem to simply be shuttling from one children's fantasy to another, but she's quick to differentiate between mice and Muggles.
"The land of Door (in Despereaux) feels quite magical, so it has that in common with Harry Potter and it's also based on a book, but I think they're very simple stories with different messages.
UPDATE #2: Emma spoke to Access Hollywood about the joys of doing voice-over work for the film and Goblet of Fire costar Robert Pattinson:
PHILOMATH ❅ not one atom, but two ♪ ♪ made of starstuff ❅ def main():
Wow she really does put a lot of effort into making her characters real... It just shows that she's a great actress, and that she had a very bright future! Go Emma!

I really admire that girl's humility when she speaks and her whole comparison between hermione/pea is very interesting and good to know.
She's very conscientious of her acting parts. That's great. I can understand her concerns about sounding like Hermione. I think it's natural that she'd feel that way because she hasn't done much acting outside of the HP films. However, I'm sure she'll do fine with future acting jobs. Good luck, Emma, we'll be watching your future (hope that doesn't freak you out!)

I like how she still thinks much of HP even during Despereaux promos unless the questions actually ask her about HP and then despereaux.Waiting for the 19th now.
