Emma Thompson to re-create film classic My Fair Lady (UPDATED)

Emma Thompson, the actress who portrays Trelawney in the Harry Potter movies will be one of the leading writers for the upcoming film classic, My Fair Lady.

This isn't Emma's first time at writing instead of acting, having recently penned films such as Nanny McPhee and Wit, as well as receiving an Oscar for Best Screenplay for Sense and Sensibility which she reportedly keeps in her bathroom along with her Oscar for Best Actress for Howard's End.

Quote:

I’ve been hired to write a new screenplay for My Fair Lady, based on the foreword and afterword of Shaw’s Pygmalion—different from the musical and not as sweet an ending.
Also in the news, Alan Rickman, along with director Randall Miller and producer J. Todd Harris will be participating in a Question & Answer session whilst promoting their new unreleased film, Bottle Shock.

Bottle Shock tells the story of early winemaking in California, focusing on the 'Judgement of Paris' wine tasting event in 1976. The session will be taking place at The Picture House, with tickets costing $35.

UPDATE: Thanks to UHP for tipping us off about photos of Alan at the premiere for Bottle Shock at the Chateau Montelena Winery in Calistoga, California. You can view them all here in our galleries.

Furthermore, Ralph Fiennes, portrayer of Lord Voldemort in the Potter movies will be starring onstage in a production of Uncle Vanya in 2010. He will also be directing a Shakespeare based film, Coriolanus, as well as playing Oedipus in The Seagull, also to be on Broadway.

If Emma's sticking with a musical, Might I suggest a certain Hogwarts professor and someone you've worked with on several occasions in the Rex Harrison role? Anyone who's seen Truly Madly Deeply knows he can sing! :mwaha:

That's so cool!

hmm, a different sort of My Fair Lady eh? fashioned after the greek story of Pygmalion? well i'll take anything from Emma Thompson, she always comes up with the most interesting projects (too bad she's no longer with Branagh, they were such a creative powerhouse back in the day).

good stuff coming from Fieness and Rickman. i'll most likely be getting Rickman's film for my dad. he's just fascinated with wine themed movies :D

oh btw, since we're covering projects of other HP stars, some of you may be interested to know that Helena Bonham Carter has joined the cast of Terminator: Salvation, with Christian Bale (yes Batman himself) playing the savior of humanity John Connor. here's the article announcing that news in case anyone is interested.

That story says 'possible new addition'. It's not official.

lemme dig into that a bit further. that article is about a month old, but as far as i know, HBC is part of the Terminator cast, its just that her role isnt as big as the others. McG just finished with Comic Con in San Diego, and save for Chris Bale (who was busy promoting The Dark Knight in Japan), the director brought with him only the main cast, so HBC wasnt there. but i'll get back to you on that :)

Zoe 07-28-2008 05:13 PM

Sounds great! :)

r+h4ever1 07-28-2008 06:00 PM

Grr. Why do they have to remake everything? That bugs me. There needs to be more originality in films these days!

Anyway...Well My Fair Lady is not only one of the greatest musicals ever made, it won an Oscar for crying out loud! So I'm hoping that it's more of Pygmalion than My Fair Lady. Remaking a literal Academy Award winning Best Picture is really sketchy and risky...especially when it's so brilliant.

Good luck to her, though. I LOVED her Sense and Sensibility screenplay and performance.

Shannon :hello:
