| | | Emma Thompson: "Christmas has been stolen by awful commercialism."
Emma Thompson, the actress who plays Professor Trelawney has once again expressed her concerns about Christmas and the commercialisation of it. She expressed her concerns last year while promoting 'Love Actually' which hit British cinemas in the Christmas period. The article can be found here. Quote:
She says, "It used to be a time of magic but these days it's such a commercialised, horrible festival.
"It used to be about love. Now it's more, 'OK, what can we buy?'
"When I was a child, Christmas was a time of being close to the family, and that has been stolen by this awful commercialism.
"I ban presents. Except for the very young, they are forbidden. The only presents allowed are things that are homemade or things to eat.
"Last year (03) my husband (GREG WISE) made green tomato chutney, but sometimes we give people pots of jam and sometimes we give chocolates - that's allowed."

ok, but does she believe in god and thats why she thinks it too commercail?
that i can understand , because christmas is to celerbrate the birth of jesus, and presents where offered to him by the wise men, thats why we give out presents, so presents should be allowed. If she's doing because she thinks its gone different due to commercialization then she should at least give other stuff except jam and chocalate.

and even ministers say christmas is to comercial! i mean christmas is in december but why do shops get there christmas stock in in August and play christmas music from Sept onwards?

Well she does give homemade presents which do have more thought. I think it's more the money-making commercial side of it she dislikes and I completely agree. So many kids associate Christmas with presents and Santa rather than what the word actually states (Christ-mas - Christ's birthday) and family values. Quote:

She did say "except for the very young" which means her daughter gets what's considered a 'normal' christmas with all the gifts and that. Quote:

Because it's just another money-making season for them. Nothing more.

Christmas should be time for your family to be together wether you celebrate Christ or just love the holiday like me. I work at a store where the Corporate management pushes sales for Christmas as early as July!! It is mostly commercialism these days.

| I think that Christmas is focused on getting presents and the traditional, religious aspect is being ripped away from Christmas. People focus too much not just on buying gifts, but buying all that santa claus stuff like decorations and stuff, even when that had nothing to do with Christmas. I see where Emma Thompson is going with the whole giving cookies and chocolates thing, because the real Saint Nicholas was a missionary-type that rode a donkey on Palm Sunday (not Christmas! ) and gave out nuts and chocolate to little kids. (hehe my own little history lesson.. )
