Post David Yates explains Grindelwald & Voldemort difference; new 'Fantastic Beasts' clips

Director David Yates recently commented on the difference between the biggest Dark wizards of the 20th century in J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World - Gellert Grindelwald in the early half of the century; and Lord Voldemort in the latter half.

Grindelwald, as Rowling already confirmed, will have a prominent role in the upcoming five-part Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film series, to the point that he may be the big villain of the saga, akin to Voldemort in the Harry Potter franchise.

Yates explained that Grindelwald was more charismatic and sophisticated in his manipulative ways, compared to the cold, intimidating demeanor of Lord Voldemort.

Quote:
David Yates: “Unlike Voldemort, who was an angry brute, the next iteration is much more lethal. He wants to win the hearts and minds in a way that’s quite beguiling and sophisticated, but his values are dangerous.” Such new nemeses are “able through sheer charisma and ability to inspire and hypnotize and carry the crowd, and take the world to a darker place. That’s where the next story is going.”

Yates also commented on J.K. Rowling's early scripts for Fantastic Beasts (he has admitted in the past that it took several iterations for the author to understand the difference between screen- and novel-writing).

Quote:
The first draft of “Fantastic Beasts,” Mr. Yates said, was “predominantly dark and intense and fundamentally more serious.” A subsequent version, he said, was “very broad and playful, and that felt quite young,” as if they were “just remaking the earlier films.” Then Ms. Rowling found her groove.
Production designer Stuart Craig teased that the second movie, set to take place in Paris, France, will continue the theme of intolerance in the first movie. Filming for Fantastic Beasts 2 will begin sometime in 2017.

Those set to return for the sequel include Eddie Redmayne, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, and Katherine Waterston as the four leads, as well as rumored additions of Johnny Depp and Zoe Kravitz. No one else is confirmed as of yet.

Warner Bros. also released five minute-long clips from the first Fantastic Beasts movie, out November 18, focusing on: Newt's entry to New York City; Graves interrogating Newt; the four leads having strudel during dinner; Tina accusing Newt of letting magical creatures on the loose; and an extended look at The Blind Pig with goblin Gnarlak.
