Harry Potter and the Cursed Child's two-part production won its first big accolade this year, chosen as Best Play at this year's London Evening Standard Theatre awards. Director John Tiffany, playwright Jack Throne and Hermione Granger actress Noma Dumezweni were on hand to accept the award from Harry Potter films' legendary actress Dame Maggie Smith.
Harry Potter actor Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort) also came out victorious at the awards, winning Best Actor for his performances in both
The Master Builder and
Richard III. Photos of all the winners at the ceremony, which took place Sunday evening at London's The Old Vic, can be seen here.
Harry Potter actor Sir Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart) received the Lebedev Award for his contribution to British theatre with the opening of his Branagh Theatre in London. Also in attendance were other
Harry Potter alum including Helen McCrory, Sir Michael Gambon, Zoe Wanamaker and Julie Walters, and
Cursed Child's solo acting nominee Anthony Boyle.
Do note that the
Cursed Child's win extends to author J.K. Rowling as well, who was a nominee with Thorne and Tiffany. She could not make the event as she was presumably traveling from New York to London at the time, for this week's European premiere of
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them at Leicester Square on Tuesday evening.
