Post Chris Columbus talks Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint & Emma Watson in new interview

While promoting his upcoming feature Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, director Chris Columbus reminisced about the first two Harry Potter films, which he helmed, as well as his young stars. A new behind-the-scenes image of Chris, Dan Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint on the set of Sorcerer's Stone can be seen here.

Quote:
"My biggest pride is seeing the pictures now, and watching the three of them from a distance, and seeing them do an entire scene in one shot," said the director of the first two "Harry Potter" films, which were released in 2001 and 2002. "Seriously, I know that sounds funny, but in the old days -- and, you know, the old days meaning eight years ago -- and in that first picture in particular, it’s filled with cuts because they couldn’t really get beyond the first line without either looking into the camera, laughing or looking at the lights."
Quote:
"There wasn’t this obsession for fame," the 51-year-old director said. "It all sort of happened -- particularly with Daniel Radcliffe -- reluctantly. With the other two kids it seemed accidentally – they weren’t expecting it. And I think as a result of that, because they had that sense of support from us at the beginning, and from their parents throughout, they’ve really turned into terrific adults. And that being said, they’ve also turned into terrific actors, you know. "
On casting the three leads, Chris explained how he and producer David Heyman tried to work mitigating factors out with the trio's parents.

Quote:
"Having done the 'Home Alone' pictures, I realized that we needed to start casting kids based on their families and the security that their families could give them at this particular time in their lives -- that was particularly the case with the "Potter" kids, who were about to become three of the most famous kids in the world," Columbus said. "So David Heyman and I made sort of a pact that we were gonna cast the families as well as the kids. And in interviewing Dan’s family and Rupert’s family and Emma’s family, they surrounded themselves with a really solid group of people. Their parents were very supportive, their parents were there for them all the time."
The Ultimate Collector's editions of the first two films, directed by Columbus, can be pre-ordered via the following links (currently only in the US and Australia):

Sorcerer's Stone DVD; Sorcerer's Stone Blu-ray
Chamber of Secrets DVD; Chamber of Secrets Blu-ray

It's crazy that the first movie came out eight years ago. Wow. When all this is over, I will really, really miss it. There will never be another Harry Potter. *cries*

Wow a lot of reminiscing going on today lol...nice to hear Columbus' take on the amazing kids. His POV from back then to now sounds so sweet....they really did grow onscreen.

Chris Columbus was truly the best person for starting off the HP series. It really is a big task to jump start something at the beginning so I hold lots of respect for this man.
I still wish he could have come back to HP because he would definitely make it the BEST way to end HP but oh well...I just have to learn to live with Yates.

I do wonder though, is John Williams confirmed to return yet because that would be a nice compromise instead of not having Columbus.

I love him! He did an excellent job starting off the series and working with Dan, Rupert, and Emma. I would hate to think how things would've been if they had cast three hooligans.

I wonder when Percy Jackson comes out. I can't wait to see it!

Ultimate Potterite Original original

He was very smart to interview the families and make the families of the three main actors such an important part of the choices. I think he did a brilliant job with the first two movies, and I'm glad that he started them.

It's all so amazing, that those three have grown so much. I also love that picture.

So smart doing the 'family check' as well. After so many terrible things happening to kid stars, things could have gone terribly for the trio had they not had the kind of families they have.

It's nice to see how much they have all grown yet have still stayed grounded and not fame-crazed. That really was a good idea of Chris Columbus to look at the families, it all turned out perfectly.

I will really miss not having a HP film to look forward to after the last. it was already hard missing not having a book to look forward to to come out!! Emma, Rupert, and Dan turned out wonderfully and it's was smart of Chris to include the families!! the trio could have turned out like the kids of Hollywood, American kid actors. all messed up. I really would have liked Chris to have done all the films. He made them so close to the books, thefirst two. I would like him to do the last films for sure but i guess we'll have to do with what we got. i'm still looking forward to seeing them, the last two movies!!
