The Odd Life of the Slytherin Snitch - Sa13+ DISCLAIMER: I do not own anything in the wizarding world, whether it's creatures or spells or currency. All credit goes to J.K.Rowlings. I only own the characters mentioned unless otherwise stated. 13. Quidditch “So you wanna try out for Quidditch huh?” The Captain asked, grinning down at his prospective member. “You got any experience with any of the positions?” Dax gave a proud nod of his head. “Yup! Sure do! My sister says there’s one I was born to play!” The older boy looked impressed. “No kidding? That wouldn’t happen to be Beater, would it?” The past term had seen them losing one of their prized Beaters, graduations did that. Dax shook his head. “Nope. Spectator. Got my own omnioculars and everything, even developed my skills at starting the wave.” Clearly a pro. |
53. Chase “Oi! Manson! Stop! Stop boy!” Dax bolted through the house, trailing closely behind his cruppy that had managed to swipe one of his Mum’s slippers. “Bloody thing, you’re going to get me in trouble!” He whined, trying to latch on to him, but it was no use, Manson swerved and twisted until he’d made his way through the little doggy door and out into the backyard. Dax threw the door opened and stared at him as he got into the flower garden. “Aw man, just because you’re bound to get a smack, doesn’t mean I have to get one too!” |
99. Trunk “Alright Manson remember what I told you. No barking until we dock.” Dax whispered placing his crup atop the other items in his trunk. Crups weren’t allowed at Durmstrang and sure he had Tater but that would never replace his first real pet. Consequently, he was taking him and that was the end of that. The boy held the lid, ready to slam it down when, “Dax Sanders, what on earth do you think you’re doing?!” He whipped around, spotting his Mum by the door. “It was all his idea, I swear!” “He’s a cruppy!” “Clever little devils they are.” |
92. Chocolate Little brothers weren’t meant to read owls sent to their sisters, but it was allowed so long as you didn’t get caught. Problem was Dax always got caught because his sister was too smart for her own good. If she told his mummy then he’d be in trouble and good little boys didn’t get in trouble! “I’ll give you chocolate if you don’t tell! Freya, pleeeease.” “You don’t have any chocolate.” And a roll of her eyes to boot. “How do you know?” “You’re not allowed chocolate and wouldn’t risk getting into trouble.” “So…Is that a no?” “Goodbye Dax.” |
43. Headmaster If there was one thing Dax prided himself on, it was never getting into trouble because of one reason or another. See, he was a good kid that told on others. That automatically got you favours with teachers and the Headmaster who he’d never gone to see personally. Why you may ask. Simple, people died in there—then they got detention afterwards and you didn’t even wanna know what happened down in those dungeons. No, Dax was content enough sending others to the Headmaster then bolting afterwards. Snitching was risky business; one could almost always expect a broken nose after. |
18. Whomping Willow “You’ve got a tree that WHOMPS people????” The 12 year old’s eyes were wide and his mouth hung open in shock at his cousin’s words. A vicious tree and no one tried cutting it down? “Can’t you have the Groundskeeper chop it down before it hurts someone??” Lex only rolled her eyes at him. “It’s not meant to be chopped down; it’s a piece of the history. Getting whomped is half the fun.” Somehow his eyes managed to get wider. It was official; people that went to Hogwarts were NUTTERS. He was glad he didn’t go there or he’d DIE. |
93. Chicken Dax woke one night to an empty dorm. Hearing some noises downstairs in the Common Room he quickly went to see what he was missing. Apparently his dorm mates wanted to sneak out and head by the lake to toss an older kids trunk there. “You coming Dax?” But before he could answer another quickly piped up. “Of course he ‘aint.” The boy’s eyebrows crinkled and his feet shuffled awkwardly beneath him. “Who says I’m not coming? I-It sounds fun.” He lied, hoping he wouldn’t be left behind. “Yeah, why can’t he come?” “Because he’s a bloody chicken, that’s why.” |
19. Wand Dax was anxious and excited at the same time. He’d be getting his own wand today and with a wand he’d be able to do magic. Not at home but that didn’t matter because he was going to school!! Finally, learning magic and being able to do the things Freya told him about. While waiting his turn in line, Dax was bouncing eagerly on the balls of his feet. Suddenly his excitement turned to dread as something came to mind. What if he got a girl’s wand? They’d all laugh at him then he’d never make friends…except with girls. Ugh. |
89. Past Dax was bored. At 6 one needed something to do so he sought to find his sister. After walking into her room though, it was clear she wasn’t there…until he saw a hand appear at her window then the rest of her crawling back inside. His Mummy said she’d be in big trouble if she snuck out again. “I’m TELLING!” He announced rather loudly, spinning on his heel to find his Mum. “No you’re not.” The 12 year old tackled him to the floor not caring if she squished him. “Freya! Get off meeeeee! Get off so I can tell!” |
94. Allergic As much as he liked school, he had to admit being home was nice and he could grow to appreciate these ‘holiday’ things in a way he obviously couldn’t before. Dax sat on his back patio trying to get through his Potions reading when he saw his bestfriend flop down in the seat across from him. “Wanna go set the sprinklers off and let Manson play with them?” He glanced over at her for only a moment. “No.” “Why not?” “I’m Allergic.” “To water?” The scepticism was evident. “No, to trouble and by extension water sprinklers near my mum’s sheets.” |
16. Dragonhide Gloves “Hey Mum, do you think you can get me a new pair of Dragonhide Gloves?” Dax asked, entering the kitchen and leaning against the counter next to his mother. It hadn’t been that long since she’d gotten him his last pair but when you had a crup, you stopped questioning things. “I got you one at the start of the year, how hard are they working you?” “It wasn’t school, just Manson.” He said with a casual shrug, trying to play it off. “How did…—” “I could tell you but then you’d have questions about your new shoes too.” |
23. Telescope “Whoa what happened to your eye??” Dax heard someone yell as he took his seat at the back of his Dark Arts class. He knew what they were on about and sunk further down into his seat, trying to remove attention from himself. Even then the prying eyes didn’t look away. If he wasn’t mistaken they’d only gotten more curious. “It’s nothing, just ran into my telescope, is all.” He muttered, pulling the book over his face. “How’d you manage that?” Came a sceptic voice. “Looks more like a punch for snitching. You’ve gotten enough of those.” “It was dark okay?” |
77. Cheerful The 13 year old was all grins. There didn’t seem like anything could dampen the mood of the cheerful boy—you knew things were serious when humming happened and right now, there was a lot of that going on, coupled with the spring in his step. Today was just such a glorious day. Dax skipped down the steps two at a time, grinning at everyone he passed. Never did he think he would find so much satisfaction in getting people in trouble but that month’s worth of detention hit the spot. Lesson to be learned. Don’t mess with the snitch. |
73. Warn Dax hadn’t listened. Only hours after being released from the hospital wing, the boy was already going over ways to perfect the flip his dorm mate had taught him. Maybe he wasn’t launching hard enough, or maybe he should pay more attention to where he was flipping, whatever the case his arm twisted painfully and he found himself sitting on yet another hospital bed with a scowling Healer. “What’d I warn you about when you left here earlier?” The 13 year old lowered his head but said nothing in his defence otherwise she was likely to smack him for disrespect. |
11. History of Magic He wasn’t at all amused, nor was he interested but he still listened to Jazzy going on about the merits to be found in the subject of History of Magic. Girls talked a lot. Dax had no idea she was so into the subject until she paced his floor for an hour straight trying to convince him. Finally he decided enough was enough and threw his pillow at her. “Knock it off. Why can’t you be like normal girls and talk about boys and puppies? Least then I’d be able to proper ignore you.” Was that too much to ask? |
15. Room In. Out. In. Out. Dax rolled his skateboard through the doorway and out into the hall then watched Manson use his little paws to roll it back. It’d been a slow enough day; worse than he expected his Easter break would be but it was either sit in this room wasting time with his crup or attempting that Dark Arts homework he’d been forced to take home. Sitting it was. “What’d you say we play exploding snaps next, huh boy?” As fun as this was, his butt was beginning to cramp and this room was starting to lose its appeal. |
76. Zap ZAP! “Ow! Stooop! Cut it out!” Dax gingerly rubbed at his arm. It wasn’t funny the first zap or the second and if Jazzy thought the sixth would make it any better than she seriously had some issues going on in her headspace. “I’m not a target for practice.” “No, but what you are is whiny. We were aiming to fix this, remember? I bet it doesn’t hurt that much.” His bestfriend retorted, all too pleased to zap him again. “Dammit, I said to stop!” “Or what? You’ll tell?” His face became tinged with colour but he had no response. |
46. Dungeon Such a dank and dark place was never meant for the likes of him. Dax was the epitome of ‘well-behaved’ by virtue of the fact he did very little to get himself into trouble. All trouble got you was a stay down in the dungeons and he’d heard rumours of people not coming back up at a place like Durmstrang. There were people he’d gladly sentence to such a fate down here, but himself? Not so much, in fact not at all. So what was he doing down there? Why, visiting the prisoners and admiring his handy work of course! |
96. Socks He. Was going. To DIE. It didn’t hold much appeal but that was where it was headed. Try as he might he couldn’t find any fuzzy socks and Avto had insisted those were a necessity if one was to evade a yeti attack. No one knew what killed that boy by the forest which roughly translated to YETIS--and him without socks! The situation was critical and, for a boy with such an overwhelming love for his life, slightly nerve-wracking. He would need to owl his mother immediately; have it fly all night if it must—Dax needed to live. |
55. Egg on “Hit him in the gut!” Someone yelled as a crowd gathered. Dax watched the others approach, knowing exactly what they’d gathered for and it only made him feel sick. “The nose, break his nose, you can do it!” Despite the shouts, Dax kept his arms and legs to himself. That kid had to be twice his size. He’d hardly make a dent before getting his teeth knocked out and how many girls did you hear of snogging toothless boys? He wouldn’t let them egg him on. “Why isn’t he attacking?” “He won’t, Dax is more coward than proud, everyone knows.” |
32. Common Rooms “Dax! How many times have I told you this is NOT your Common Room back at school and you shouldn’t be leaving your things thrown about??” He knew that tone of voice and it spoke of nothing good. His mother had a temper on her—one that was more usually directed at his sister but he’d seen her bad side on the odd occasion and it made him into the good boy he was today. ‘Nothing steered you straighter than a cross woman’ his Dad always said and watching her foot tapping away impatiently now, how could he not agree? |
61. Kiss Never ever trying kissing before wasn’t a problem, not unless you were Dax Sanders and you had a whole bunch of other odds stacked against you as well because that’s when you started questioning how fair life really was. The 14 year old never gave much thought to the subject, being too busy with combat and skateboarding but it got harder to not notice right after your best mate had done it and said it wasn’t so bad. He’d have been more inclined to just go for it, but see, he knew that was how guys like him got punched. |
38. Patronus He didn’t mind the jokes his dormmates made, sometimes, but not today when the jokes were directed at him. Dax was fine with laughing at himself…just not when others joined in. “You know what mate? I bet your patronus would be a turtle, it’d see the dementor and it’d be shell life for him after that.” “Nah, reckon he’d get a chicken flying out o’ his wand, clucking and flapping off in the opposite direction.” The room erupted with laughter again. “You’re both wrong if you think he’d get as far as drawing his wand in the first place.” |
8. Potions The bubbling hadn’t gone unnoticed and it left the young Wolverine anxious in his seat. By far, Dax was a mini master at Potions, but the same couldn’t be said for the boy sharing the table with him while they brewed. The vicious hissing and spitting coming from the boy’s cauldron were the first signs and he wouldn’t wait for the others. Slowly Dax inched toward the door, already seeing the imminent explosion and wanting no part it in. By the time the solution had finally gone BOOM Dax was out of the room and half way down the corridor. |
27. Owl He didn’t need a new pet, Manson was plenty for him and Freya’s band of 15 furballs definitely took their toll too. No. This pet was for Jazzy since that pygmy puff wasn’t working out. At first he thought he’d get her an owl, something so simple not even she could mess it up…but then he remembered the owl she’d taken to school and forgotten to take home and suddenly, it didn’t seem like such a good idea... “…How’s about I get you a pet rock? You won’t have to worry about feeding it.” And he wouldn’t have wasted his money. |
25. Sorting Hat “So let me get this straight. All you have to do is sit…wait a minute or three…then have a hat tell you what house you belong to?” What sort of unfair rubbish was that??? He wouldn’t believe it. Not for a second and not when the ritual was so much more daunting at Durmstrang. What he’d have given to put on a hat and save himself the after mark. Dax didn’t care what anyone else said, he could have been just as proud a Wolverine as anyone else while wearing a silly talking hat on his head, legit, he could. |
78. Author’s Choice – Combat Tournament The nerves were making his hand shake uncontrollably and as he’d come to realize, there was nothing to be done but sit on them to make them less noticeable. Couldn’t let Ariana see him shake, she’d only make sure everyone else on the team noticed too and he’d been doing a good job of pretending to be confident thus far—thanks to his best mate, Angelo, of course. “Next we have Dax Sanders of Durmstrang and Kazimir Romanov of Koldovstoretz. Fighters to the platform.” Dax rose slowly, giving a faint smile as his team cheered while praying he wouldn’t lose. |
64. Nap “Well if you refuse to follow good reasoning then I suppose I wish you the best of luck.” Dax finally conceded. There was no changing Jazzy’s mind once it’d been set on something and when it was something as reckless as this, there was no hope of reaching that area in her head that was meant to be a brain. “Wish me luck? Aren’t you coming?” He watched her puff her cheeks, ready to protest or persuade but the boy simply turned over and pulled the covers over his head. “Nope, I’ll be here napping. Wake me if you survive.” |
22. Kneazle ‘He won’t be any trouble’ she said. ‘It’s only for a few days’ she said. Dax was beyond dead. His mother was going to skin him alive when she got home and there was no one to blame but his cousin’s stooopid kneazle. How does one creature feel entitled to feast on 15 cute little furry creatures??? Naturally Dax couldn’t allow Felix to have a go at his sister’s babies but he should have figured the Jarvey wouldn’t have taken it so lightly. The living room was a battle zone and he wasn’t sure which of the two had won… |
7. Care of Magical Creatures “Mate, what d’you think you’re doing?” His friend asked, grabbing the creature from the bucket before it drowned. “Failing, what’s it look like?” Dax replied, not particularly inspired to change course in this class. He didn’t know how to bathe a firecrab and wasn’t planning to get scorched on account of that thank you very much. “You do know that if you fail CoMC you can’t take Dragon Taming next term, yeah?” The 4th year shot his friend a rather incredulous look. “If I can’t handle a firecrab, what makes you think I’d let them put me with a dragon??” |
62. Amortentia “NO!” “Why not?” “Because it’s creepy and weird and you hardly count as a girl.” You think that would have been obvious after all this time but apparently not? Dax mirrored the creasing of brows that now set on Jazzy’s face but he wasn’t budging on his stance. “Why are you being such a rubbish bestfriend? I didn’t have to ask, you know, I could have just slipped him some amortentia.” His lips parted but no words came out. It was times like these that reminded him that Jasmine had the potential to be the scariest half-female on the planet. |
100. Homework “Hey, a couple of us were gonna head down into the village for a while, you wanna come?” “Nah, I’ll pass on this one.” He didn’t even have to think about it too long. Being allowed to leave the school didn’t make the means of leaving it any better and it was just a couple months ago that he did it last…more time was needed before he put himself through that trauma again. The looks they gave prompted him to explain further. “I’ve…uh…got a buttload of homework…that I’m er…super excited to start on.” So what if it was the weekend? |
2. Muggle Studies Muggle…Studies…? As in…there was an entire subject dedicated to teaching about those magic-less people…? Dax wasn’t sold on it and quite frankly he was glad it wasn’t a subject they had to be bothered with at Durmstrang. Sounded like a waste if you asked him…although…if that class taught skateboarding then he’d be game. Muggles were the first skateboarders and he saw them at the skate park sometimes. Someone should teach THAT in school. Unfortunately, it sounded more like switch flipping and uses of a rubber ducky…what even was that anyway and why would you make a duck out of rubber? |
20. Hogsmeade “I’ve heard they got a shop called the ‘Hog’s Head” “Sure’d be nice to see somethin’ like that.” “We could sneak over—” “Don’t be stupid, that’s impossible without the Headmaster finding out and how would you get there?” Dax sat quietly on his bed and watched his dormmates go back and forth about the ‘mystery’ that was Hogsmeade. “I’ve snuck there before.” He finally interjected. All conversation stopped and eyes fixed on him. A moment later, they all began pelting him with their pillows. “You’re such a bloody Liar, everyone knows you’re too scared to hit the front gate.” |
30. Feast Alright, start of term feast! Believe it or not, Dax was actually excited to be back at school…if you forgot the fact he’d promised to stop skipping Dark Arts classes this year—but him and Pan had worked something out for that so he wasn’t too worried. The now Fourth Year slipped into the seat right next to his best mate Angelo and was already ready to be fed. Speeches were fine and all that but unless it pertained to his life, he always felt like maybe the Headmaster could hold off til they had something substantial in their stomachs. |
41. Thestral Dax had never seen a thestral and after hearing the criteria, he didn’t wanna. Let’s not even get into what they looked like. Bloody things sounded like they could spook the socks off death without trying. His cousin was no artist but he felt her sketch might have done it some justice. Thankfully enough Dax wasn’t likely to witness death. The fact of the matter was that he was more inclined to bolt at the first sign of danger. If someone wanted to risk their life then all the power to them but he would never stick around to watch. |
6. Divination The older you got was the harder it was for you to get nap times in the middle of the school day. That, of course, was why Dax considered Divination to be such an invaluable class. Dark room, low murmurs, warm candle light, comfy cushions. There wasn’t a single person in the entire world that could convince him their Professor wasn’t creating the perfect break spot. Being the ‘seer’ she was, she could obviously see how exhausted they all were from taking real subjects and so he tried to thank her after every nap session. The woman was a saint. |
21. Veela “Reckon I’d like to date a Veela even once in my life. Imagine the most beautiful girl anyone’s ever seen wrapped around my arm.” It was the topic of the lunch hour among some of his friends he’d made in his house and Dax could only shake his head. They didn’t know what they were saying. One of those for a girlfriend? Yikes. For that he got a nudge. “You sayin’ you wouldn’t even after she bat those pretty eyelashes at you?” “Nah mate, you’re forgetting that when they get angry they’re uglier than sin.” And vicious besides. No thanks. |
39. Duel “What’d you say me and you have a little duel? Say…midnight, out in the courtyard. We’ll settle this like men.” Dax was marginally unimpressed. Duels were not allowed outside of the duelling club and DA, they were even less allowed after curfew when you were out on the grounds where you shouldn’t be. Besides, Dax wasn’t as quick with a wand as his fist and as a result would never concede to these terms. “I’d rather you come over here right now so I can flatten you with my fists and we can get on with our lives.” For real. |
