100 Oddball Drabbles for Neville/Luna by Christian - Sa13+ Neville and Luna--you always wondered if they would get together or not. Now's your chance to follow their day-to-day escapades and make the conclusion yourself! |
96 – Socks It was all Grandma’s fault. Neville had never wanted to wear these ridiculous socks (emblazoned with old-fashioned frills). He mused over this as he sat at the feet of a stone unicorn, trying to pry off the embellishments. “What nice socks,” a voice commented. Startled, he glanced over and saw Luna Lovegood. Smiling vaguely at him, she pointed at the frills. “Those are perfect for warding off nargles.” She lifted her robes to display her own frilly socks. Neville smiled back at her; no matter how loony she was, he was relieved he wasn’t the only one with atrocious socks. |
34 – Parseltongue “Parseltongue…parseltongue…” Neville couldn’t believe he’d forgotten his Defence Against Dark Arts essay was due tomorrow. He sat in the library, frantically flipping through a textbook. A Ravenclaw leaned over her table and stared at him. Slightly irked by this, Neville finally met her gaze. He was used to her odd ways by this time. “Can you help me?” he asked. She was a Ravenclaw, after all; it couldn’t hurt. “Gum disease. It’s a form of gum disease. I’m surprised the Aurors haven’t thought of that type yet,” she sighed whimsically as she closed her book. “Er, thanks, Luna…” Neville mumbled. |
22 – Kneazle The whir of owls’ wings rang through the Great Hall. Luna spotted her wizened owl; Dad must have brought something for her! Her owl dropped a roll of parchment into her hands and she picked it up, unrolling it. It was a poster of a kneazle. Disappointed that it wasn’t something like a crumple-horned snorkack, she stuck it into her bag sadly. As she was jostled in the throng on the way out, the long roll dropped from her bag. Neville picked it up, but she was gone; however, he made it a point to return it to her later. |
48 – Leprechaun It was detention with Snape, and Neville was copying supply order forms. Luna sat in front of him, writing in a flowing script, not looking the least bit perturbed. An hour passed and Neville’s eyes were beginning to wander. He could see leprechauns dancing on Luna’s bracelet. Snape cleared his throat, causing Neville resume working. When another hour was up, Snape collected the order forms. His eyes skimmed the top paper. “According to this form,” he said through the spaces of his teeth, “I want ten phials of leprechaun poison. It’s lobalug poison, Longbottom. Detention tomorrow, to amend your mistakes.” |
84 – Angry “Give them back!” Luna’s voice drifted down the narrow corridor. Turning the corner, Neville saw a couple of seventh-year Slytherins dangling a pair of purple shoes just out of Luna’s reach. “Leave her alone!” Neville stuttered, drawing his wand. He felt immense anger bubbling inside his chest. Luna put a hand on Neville’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, they’ll give them back eventually.” Her eyes remained normal, but he could sense her anger too. Pulling her with him, she started to walk away. They were almost leaving the corridor when Luna’s shoes came flying at them. “You’re no fun,” the Slytherins drawled. |
46 – Dungeon Luna was concentrating. Very hard. Her eyes were scrunched up (which was a rarely-used face for her) as her paintbrush moved across the canvas. “What’s that?” Neville asked her, mystified. “A dungeon.” “A dungeon?” He surveyed the picture. “The colors are too bright for a stone dungeon! And why are there flowers growing on the walls?” Luna didn’t lift her eyes from the canvas. “My dungeon is a bright dungeon.” “Then it wouldn’t be a dungeon at all,” Neville reasoned, chuckling. “Well, all you odd people wouldn’t think so, but ones without a narrow mind would understand,” Luna said matter-of-factly. |
53 – Chase A celebrated art is the technique of chasing metal. Winifred Fersy is the most renowned chaser in the magical community. Both Luna and Neville looked up from reading this in their book. “Chasing?” Neville asked in puzzlement. “Metal doesn’t have legs.” Luna patiently explained, “There are different meanings of the word ‘chase’. In this case, when you ‘chase’ metal, it means that you engrave it for decoration.” “Oh.” Neville paused for a moment to think. “But that doesn’t have anything to do with chasing something…” Luna blinked at him with her orb-like eyes, wondering how someone couldn’t grasp the concept. |
16 – Dragonhide Gloves Luna often walked around Hogwarts castle in bright green dragon hide gloves. “They are useful in detecting awaiting bacteria living inside your belongings,” she explained to Neville, who had actually taken the time to ask one billowy autumn day. The others just shook their heads when they passed her. “Oh, I see,” Neville answered, eyeing the gloves. “Aren’t they a bit thick for detecting bacteria?” They also looked very absurd and overlarge on Luna’s thin, small hands. He wondered if they were comfortable. “Of course not,” Luna replied airily and patiently. “It’s the people who are thick who don’t believe.” |
23 – Telescope “Mars is bright tonight.” Luna lifted her eyes from the telescope she was gazing through and turned it so Neville could have a turn. Shuffling closer to her, Neville gulped and placed his sweaty hands on the tube. It was awkward enough being with Luna alone at the astronomy tower, but having to adjust a telescope by himself was too much to ask his jittering nerves. “Here, let me help you,” Luna offered calmly, unfazed. She lightly placed a hand upon his and turned some knobs with the other. His heart was palpitating now, but he fought down a blush. |
72 – Vex A group of Slytherins leaned back in their library chairs after a long chat. Neville approached them and asked, “Do you know where to find books on toadstools?” “Does it look like it?” one Slytherin snapped. Neville, taken aback, scuffled off to another aisle. “Don’t you find Longbottom so vexing?” the Slytherin mused distastefully, scowling at the Gryffindor’s retreating back. “No, I don’t,” Luna said as she drifted past. “He’s a nice bloke; you should get to know him.” “Looks like Longbottom has Loony as a girlfriend; what a perfect match,” the Slytherin jeered to her friends as Luna left. |
66 – Pace Luna Lovegood’s pace was a curious one indeed. She sometimes would twirl whimsically in a medium pace, then slow to a drift, and then speed up to a skip. Neville liked watching her. She was just so interesting to him, unlike anyone he’d ever met. Perhaps he liked her because she was a better version of himself—an oddball, but okay with it. Maybe if he imitated her pace he would learn to be okay with being the odd one out too. Making sure no one was watching, he tried a twirl. No, that won’t do, he immediately figured out. |
7 – Care of Magical Creatures “There’s a new and young professor at Hogwarts,” Professor Alabaster told Professor Longbottom, who blinked in surprise. “Really? Who is it?” Professor Longbottom inquired with interest. He took off his potting gloves, which were crusted with dirt, and picked up an Abyssinian Shrivelfig. Professor Alabaster smiled serenely. “Professor Lovegood.” Nearly dropping his plant, Professor Longbottom sputtered, “Lovegood? Luna Lovegood?” The other professor nodded. “She’s an interesting one, but I’m sure she’ll do a wonderful job teaching. She seems to have a real keen interest.” “And I think I know which class she’ll be teaching,” Professor Longbottom concluded with a grin. |
100 – Homework Neville groaned and let his parchment fall to the table. Rubbing his eyes, he mumbled, “I don’t think I’ll be able to finish my homework today.” Luna looked over her book at him. “Come, Neville, you will be able to do it. It’s only seventeen inches long. I always finish my homework and have time to read.” She held up her Quibbler magazine as proof. “Meh.” Neville sighed and twiddled his quill (unsuccessfully). “You’re in Ravenclaw, though. You’re naturally smart, then.” “Being in Ravenclaw doesn’t make you smart,” Luna pointed out fairly, flipping a page and looking at Neville pointedly. |
62 – Lope Neville and Luna loped towards the warmth of Hogwarts castle, their footsteps splashing through the puddles and hair being whipped about by the wind. “Take time to enjoy the rain; if it comes in contact with your scalp, the little pleuts that reside in the raindrop will bless you with further knowledge,” Luna told Neville over the cry of the wind as she ran in a circle. “What? Oh—well—oh bother,” Neville chuckled, standing stationary as Luna skipped around him. She reached over and ruffled his hair (making him blush brightly), “For equal spacing of the pleuts,” she explained. |
8 – Potions “I dislike potions class,” Luna mumbled to herself airily as she left the dungeon. In her view, Professor Snape had to broaden his mind to alterations of potions; perhaps the horn of a Crumple Horned Snorkack would add another magical element to the Ageing Potion. But no, he had severely told her that the body parts of Crumple-Horned Snorkacks would never have a place in potion making. What narrow-mindedness! He wasn’t even nice about it, like Hermione was. Yes, she did dislike potions very much. Little did she know that Neville was thinking the same thing at that very moment. |
77 – Cheerful Neville was walking on clouds. Professor Sprout had just told the class he’d received the highest marks (full marks, at that) in the Herbology OWL examinations. Hermione had looked crestfallen but happy for him at the same time when she congratulated him after class. “You know you’re a try-hard when…” Malfoy sneered as he walked past Neville on the way back from the greenhouses. Luna patted Neville kindly on the shoulder. “I heard you got full marks on your Herbology OWL. Congratulations!” “Thanks.” He blushed sheepishly, and as she walked away, he touched the spot where her hand had lain. |
26 – Quill The winter air was cold on Neville and Luna’s ears as they walked through Hogsmeade window-shopping. “Why don’t we go inside Honeydukes?” A blast of warm air descended upon them as they entered. Jelly Slugs, Peppermint Toads, and Chocolate Frogs lined the walls. A magnificent quill, which Neville found out was a sugar quill, stood by the entrance. As Luna looked the other way, he reached the counter and paid for it. “Here, this is for you,” he said, holding it out. “Why, thank you!” Luna took the quill gratefully (though she knew it would rot her teeth and gums). |
1 – Herbology Luna saw Neville through the greenhouse working on a few pot plants after his Herbology class. He was supposed to meet her here, but clearly he had lost track of the time. Stepping forward curiously, she peeked in closer. He was so concentrated on his potting that he didn’t even notice her, but she didn’t mind. She liked watching him at work, doing the one thing he loved best. Wiping sweat from his brow (which smudged dirt on his face), he looked up at saw her gazing at him. Flushing, he waved at her and she waved back, smiling vaguely. |
49 – Yule Ball Oh, how Neville did want to invite Luna to the Yule Ball with him—if only he could find her! He imagined dancing with her all night long, watching her spin, laughing with her over butterbeer. Scanning the crowd, he groaned hopelessly. He had searched everywhere for her—he knew her class schedule, but she was nowhere to be found. He had thought of going to the Ravenclaw common room, but he didn’t know where it was. And time was running out. I guess I’ll have to ask Hermione, he sighed reluctantly, mounting the flight of stairs to Gryffindor tower. |
74 – X-Tinguish The rain extinguished his hopes. Long drips slithered down the windows, making him sigh. Neville stood up, then jumped when he saw who was behind him. “Wow, you scared me!” he exclaimed. Luna grinned mystically. “Am I really that scary?” “No, no, of course not. You’re not scary at all,” he sputtered, turning red in the face. Her perturbing eyes probed the sky. “The rain sure knows how to extinguish a nice weekend, doesn’t it?” Neville started for the sake of carrying on a conversation. Luna shrugged. “We can find lots of things to do when it rains. Follow me.” |
20 – Hogsmeade The village of Hogsmeade was bright and cheery this autumn day and welcomed the couple with open arms. Leaves danced about their feet, the sun shone warmly upon their backs, and laughter floated to their ears. Neville patted Luna’s arm gently, thinking about how this year would be the last of his education at Hogwarts, and last year at school with Luna. He had to make the best of it. “Why don’t we browse around?” she suggested before he started, wrapping her hand around his arm in the fashion that she always did. “Maybe we can find some nargle bait.” |
51 – Act “I’m sure you’d be a great actress,” Neville told Luna as they wandered aimlessly down the halls. “I’ve never acted in my life,” Luna replied, giving him a searching look. Neville thought for a moment on this. Of course she’d never acted; she’d never had to act a part—she was always…Luna. Unlike everyone else in the school, she was herself at all times and didn’t need to pretend to be cooler or smarter. He responded to her statement. “That’s true, but I like it that way.” She smiled, and he had the feeling she knew what he was thinking. |
10 – Arithmancy Luna sighed and picked at her arithmancy homework. She never had liked numbers much, as they were too narrow-minded and definite. She preferred Divination, though it was a bit hokey to her. “Having fun with your homework, I see,” Neville said, shifting towards her and staring at the complicated numbers. He was glad he hadn’t chosen to take Arithmancy the previous year. “Loads,” Luna sighed, closing the book. “It’s actually not too bad, if you think positively.” He had the urge to squeeze her hand as it lay upon the textbook. After contemplating and hesitating, he followed through. She smiled. |
very sweet, I think they would be awesome together |
64 – Nap Neville couldn’t help it; he had to nap, as that day had been utterly exhausting. Instead of doing his homework in the library, he chose a table and buried his head in his arms. Soon his snores echoed around the library, making Madam Pince very suspicious. “Neville.” Luna chided him gently and he moaned. “Neville, Madam Pince isn’t going to be happy if she finds you like this.” She lifted his head up. “But I’m tired!” “I will help you to the Gryffindor common room,” she offered as she helped him up. He nodded sluggishly and leaned against her. “Okay.” |
88 – Sweet Tooth Honeydukes was a dream for anyone who had a sweet tooth. That is why Neville stopped by on his first trip to Hogsmeade. The thirteen-year-old marveled at the sight and spent two galleons on just candy (it was his monthly allowance—he wouldn’t tell Gran what he’d spent it on, though). There was a rendition of The Quibbler that was edible. He thought of Luna automaticallly. Reaching for it, he placed a few sickles down on the counter to buy it for her. Then he felt suddenly nervous—what if she didn’t like it? Hopefully she had a sweet tooth. |
17 – Cauldron The cauldron was bubbling madly, much to Neville’s dismay. Everyone else’s was perfectly simmering. Why did he have to have such a hard time with potion-making? Fighting back the urge to cry, he added a sprinkle of gurdyroots. They didn’t help. Instead, they exploded his cauldron, spraying him with sticky fluid. “Longbottom! Go to the washroom and clean yourself up!” Snape commanded, cleaning up the mess with his wand. Whimpering, Neville dashed out. As he reached the washroom, he spotted Luna, who looked at him with a startled expression. “Don’t even ask,” he mumbled, hiding his sticky face from her. |
93 – Chicken “I’ve been called a chicken for my whole life,” Neville confessed to Luna as they strode down the Hogwarts corridors. “Why is that? You’re in Gryffindor, aren’t you?” She turned her wide gaze upon him, making him feel like she was reading his mind. He bit his lip. “I don’t know; I guess they’ve never seen that part of me that’s brave. I haven’t seen it either, and I wonder if I ever will.” “It’ll come in time,” Luna assured him, patting his arm. He smiled feebly at her confidence in him. She was the least chicken-ish person he knew. |
38 – Patronus “I can’t do it. I can’t think of a thought happy enough,” Neville groaned to Harry in the Room of Requirement. “Of course you can, Neville,” Harry encouraged, showing him the wand movement. “Here, you can practice with Luna.” Luna had accomplished the Patronus charm a few weeks ago. Smiling at Neville, she clasped his wand hand and went through the movement with him. “Try it now, and say it with confidence.” Neville thought hard about the first time he’d met Luna. Happiness about her friendship welled inside him, and he felt like maybe—just maybe—he could do it. |
41 – Thestrals He was riding into the night, the cold wind blowing across his face. Beside him, Luna was riding calmly on her Thestral (side-saddle). “You alright?” she asked him over the roaring of the wind. He couldn’t find any words to speak, but nodded jerkily. This was terrifying—beyond terrifying, to be exact. He never wanted to ride a Thestral again. The beating of its wings against his legs scared everything out of him. Meanwhile, Luna smiled at Neville, watching his attempt at bravery. They’d arrive soon. “Keep holding on,” she reminded the Gryffindor, patting the neck of her Thestral fondly. |
87 – Plaid The snow was swirling outside in a blur and Neville had forgotten his mittens up in his dormitory. Luna was walking beside him lightly, as if she walked in foot-high snow every day. “How lovely the weather is!” she sighed, smiling at the sky. “Er, yeah,” Neville agreed half-heartedly. His fingers were turning red with the cold and he clenched and unclenched them to keep them moving. Noticing his hands, Luna muttered, “That won’t do. Accio mittens!” Two plaid mittens flew into her hands moments later and she handed them to Neville, who thanked her and put them on gratefully. |
52 – Bore “You have nice eyes,” Luna complimented Neville with a wistful smile. Those big, misty blue eyes met the dark brown ones. Her eyes bored into his, and he felt like he could not look away. It seemed like at these moments, she was the only one he was looking at, and he couldn’t take his eyes away from hers. The way she looked at him as if she knew all his secrets (he wouldn’t be surprised if she did) didn’t bother him too much. He knew it was just Luna, Loony Lovegood, who he had now a special fondness for. |
91 – Future “What do you think the future holds?” Neville asked Luna as they found a comfortable place along the castle walls under the autumn sun. “It looks bright,” she responded, running her hand over the blades of green grass. “Even though Snape is now Headmaster? And those awful Death Eaters are professors?” Neville demanded, scrunching up his face in dislike. Luna nodded pleasantly. “The good and the bad in life have the distinctions an individual gives them. I’ll look on the bright side. Yes, there will be lots of violence, but it’ll be all for the better when Voldemort is defeated.” |
63 – Mooch Neville couldn’t help mooching quills from Luna; he didn’t want to because he always felt foolish and unprepared for doing so, but frequently his quills would break when he was doing homework with her. He constantly (and unsuccessfully) tried to buy an extra quill Thankfully, she was gracious about supplying him with quills. She thought nothing of giving him yet another quill, as she enjoyed watching his round face blushing pink. She didn’t tell him, but it made her laugh inside. “Luna?” Neville asked tentatively, holding up a damaged quill. “Of course, Neville,” she said cheerfully, pulling out a bagful. |
14 – Hogwarts, A History Flipping through her copy of Hogwarts, A History, Luna read every page with interest. When she found a page on the greenhouses, her mind instantly jumped to Neville, who could be found there often. He was a nice bloke in her opinion. Lately he’d taken to sitting by her in the library and she couldn’t deny that from their discussions and the time they spent together, she fancied him. “Neville must be the kindest boy I know,” she said, patting the greenhouse diagram. “What was that?” Neville’s voice came from behind a bookshelf. Luna actually blushed, which was most unusual. |
33 – Classroom Professor Neville peeked his head into the classroom, trying to find the person he wanted to find so badly. She wasn’t anywhere in sight; he’s already checked the grounds and the main floor of Hogwarts. Entering another classroom, he wondered where she could be. Footsteps echoed behind him; this made him jump and turn around. There she stood, as willowy and surprised-looking as ever. “Neville!” she exclaimed happily, walking the length of the classroom to wrap her arms around him. As she hugged him, he didn’t want to let go—he wanted them to stay in this classroom, together, forever. |
94 – Allergic “Here, this plant won’t hurt you,” Neville told Luna, holding up a giant geranium cluster towards her. “It just needs to be repotted.” “Okay,” she conceded, smiling at him. He caught her eye and smile nervously, shifting his feet. They were so close, and at that moment it seemed like—just maybe—something would happen. His face moved closer to Luna’s and hers to his; each could feel their hearts pounding, but suddenly— “Achoo!” Neville covered his nose, flushing furiously. “Sorry, I must be allergic to geraniums!” Luna patted his shoulder and removed the geraniums. “No worries,” she assured him. |
71 – Untie With a flourish of her wand, Luna easily untied the double knot of her shoelaces. “Wow, how did you do that?” Neville exclaimed in awe, mouth open. He doubted he could do that if he tried to a gazillion years! Luna chuckled. “You just wave your wand like this.” She performed a series of small, complicated-looking waves. Neville just gaped. “Yeah, I don’t think I can do it.” “Sure you can.” She reached for his hand, which was grasping the wand. “Swish to the right, left, up, down, twist it forty-five degrees, and make a jabbing motion towards the shoelaces.” |
35 – Pureblood “Hey, Longbottom, I heard you have a Pureblood girlfriend! Guess you’ve at least made one good choice in your life, then,” Draco jeered, sniggering. Neville reddened. “Shove off, Malfoy,” Seamus growled at him. Draco didn’t pay attention to him. “So, who is it, Longbottom? Your second cousin or something?” Crabbe and Goyle chuckled stupidly. “I don’t have a girlfriend!” Neville protested, still blushing. “He spends quite a lot of time with Luna Lovegood, though,” Pansy shrieked. “Loony Lovegood?” Draco guffawed loudly. “Your decision making is worse than your potions skills.” Bristling, Neville drew his wand, but Seamus held him back. |
80 – Author’s Choice: Hospital Wing Luna’s thin form slipped into the Hospital Wing, where a lone figure lay under the bed sheets. Madam Pomfrey was dozing in her office. “Neville, how are you?” she asked, though he was asleep. She lightly stroked his head. There were scars all over his face from being tortured by the Carrows. “Not the Cruciatus curse again?” Tears welled in her eyes. He was so brave. His skin was inflamed under her fingers. The moon reflected in the shiny floor as she arranged the sheets around him so it would be more comfortable. “Sleep well,” she whispered, kissing his cheek. |
57 – Gape The gape in the stone wall was so obvious that no one could miss it. It was almost as high as Luna and twice as wide. Luna and Neville passed it on one of their strolls and stopped to examine it. “It’s clearly the work of a nargle colony,” Luna observed solemnly, bending down to get a closer look. Neville learned not to laugh too loudly at her crazy notions. “No, I heard some Slytherin kicked his fellow classmate into the wall,” he argued. “Nargles. It must be.” Luna stayed true to her stance. “Whatever you say,” he replied, shrugging. |
31 – Dress Robes Luna twirled about in her sunflower-yellow dress robes Dad had bought her for Fleur and Bill’s wedding, even though it was a month away. She loved the feel of the fabric on her legs as she swished into the kitchen. A knock at the door made her float to the entrance. It was Neville! “Hi Luna! Wow, you look…nice!” he stuttered. Luna smiled serenely. “Thank you.” She motioned him inside. Still struck by how bright, yet beautiful, she looked, stepped in. “Where’d you get those dress robes?” “A family friend made them for us; we rarely go to Madam Malkin’s.” |
12 – Charms Luna touched the charms dangling from her necklace and ears. She was glad to have the protection from ancient wizards and witches. No one would believe her if she told them that her glittering jewelry was actually useful. “That’s a nice necklace,” Neville complimented. “Thanks. It’s a charm—very effective. You should try wearing it sometime.” Luna smiled vaguely at him. He wouldn’t look half bad in it. “Here, try it on. I’m sure I’ll survive a few minutes without it on.” She unclasped the necklace from her neck, but Neville quickly protested, saying he needed to write his Gran. |
83 – Fearful The bludger was coming after him! He swerved downward more swiftly than he thought he could and zoomed around a pillar. That was a close one. Fast, flying objects were a great fear of his; coupled with riding a broom, it was torture. But he was flying well! He couldn’t believe his eyes. Where was Harry? Wasn’t Harry supposed to be the seeker? Neville scanned the pitch, but soon was plummeting to the ground. “Ahh!” Someone pinched him and he woke up, papers askew, at a table in the library. Luna cocked her head at him, then resumed her reading. |
25 – Sorting Hat “But sometimes I wonder whether the Sorting Hat put me in the right place,” Neville was confiding to Luna as they walked from the Room of Requirement. “I’m just not brave enough.” Luna sighed. “You are very brave; you have to tap into it. Have confidence in yourself and don’t let anyone tell you you’re less than what you are. It’s very important to believe in yourself, after all.” “You say it like it’s so easy.” Neville was picturing the Sorting Hat in his mind, hovering above his head. “You’ll see in time; remember to be patient,” she replied mysteriously. |
54 – Dare “Truth or dare?” Ginny asked Luna on the train ride back home from Hogwarts. “Choose one.” “I don’t believe in this type of game where secrets and silly things are forced upon a victim,” Luna replied, though her answer was not haughty. “I suppose you’ll have to find someone else to play.” Ginny ignored her. “Okay, I’ll pick a dare then. Go up to Neville and tell him that you love him.” “That’s folly,” Luna repeated, feeling a very slight blush creep to her cheeks. “Looks like someone has a crush!” Ginny cried, laughing and not pursuing the matter further. |
76 – Zap The water was rippling slightly as Neville and Luna strode across the lawn by the lake. Many students were outside enjoying the summer sun. “Hey, Longbottom! Why don’t you come over here and let me zap you?” Draco sneered, laughing. “That sounds ridiculous,” Luna commented, steering Neville away. “Zapping people, however they do it, doesn’t sound like a pleasant experience at all.” “I think that was the point,” Neville replied. Luna pondered. “I zapped something only once, and it was my kneazle’s fur. I suppose it didn’t like it, because it had a very short life after I’d done it.” |
2 – Muggle Studies What had happened to the former Muggle Studies teacher at Hogwarts frightened everyone. “I took that class,” Luna whispered to Neville as some students passed. “The professor was a nice lady; she almost made me want to be a Muggle for a day.” Her eyes clouded with sadness. “I am going to miss her terribly.” “Me too,” Neville sympathized with her. “She never taught you, though.” “Yeah, but…still.” He thought he must be the lamest person ever. “She was…a nice witch.” He’d never met her, but he wanted to comfort Luna somehow. He could sense it wasn’t working too well. |
45 – Torch “Excuse me, have you seen my toad, Trevor?” Why did he always have to get lost? It was his second year at Hogwarts, yet Neville did not manage to learn how to control his pet. “Er, no,” a Ravenclaw replied, furrowing his eyebrows and returning to gazing out the window. Puffing and red in the face, Neville pushed through the crowd. “Has anyone seen a toad?” he asked, but no one heard him. “Is this him?” a blonde girl with big eyes asked, holding up Trevor. “Yes! Thank you!” Neville cried, clasping the toad tightly, his face still torch red. |
68 – Roar The wind whipped around them as they ran back into Hogwarts. They’d enjoyed a nice walk that soon turned into a run. So much for a pleasant afternoon! “What a wind!” Neville shuddered, grabbing Luna under the protective archway leading into the school. “Be careful, or you’ll get blown away!” “Wouldn’t that be a wonderful experience? I wonder where I’d end up—maybe in Beijing. I heard they have a wizarding school there, too.” Luna sighed happily and arranged her windswept hair. As they turned a corner to head to the Great Hall, he could still hear the wind’s roars. |
90 – Present It was Christmas time, and Neville couldn’t wait to give Luna her present. It was a beautifully bound book about ancient magic—she was sure to like it, as she was fond of the charms and such. He’d had it wrapped in the store and was very happy with this purchase. Christmas Day came and they exchanged presents. Luna’s eyes lit up when she saw the cover. “Lovely! Dad bought me this last year, but it will be lovely to have a newer copy!” Even though he had given her something she already had, he was glad she was pleased. |
6 – Divination “Look into the orb; sense what you see, and write it down on the scented parchment,” Professor Trelawney instructed dreamily. “I expect everyone to see at least a bit of something.” Neville stared hard into his orb, hoping that something would come to him. Nothing did. His mind started to slip from reality as he gazed into the mist. In his daydream, he could see Luna’s face in the ball, laughing hysterically like she did often. He chuckled to himself. “Mr. Longbottom, what do you see?” Professor Trelawney inquired as she drifted past him. “My dream fulfilled,” was his answer. |
79 – Almost (author’s choice) “Luna, if I die any of these days, tell my Gran that I never did find my remembrall,” Neville told the misty-eyed girl in the Room of Requirement. Luna nodded solemnly. “I’ll tell her.” Seventeen-year-old Neville smiled. “Thanks.” A moment passed between them when both were silent, stealing glimpses at the other but not acting. Finally, Neville bent his head down towards Luna’s, who blinked confusedly and then smiled. A loud bang erupted from the other side of the wall, making them jump. It turned out to be Colin Creevey, who was trying to enter. If only they’d acted quicker. |
55 – Egg On “Do it! Do it!” the first years cried as Harry Potter mounted his broom to chase after Draco Malfoy. “No! Please, Harry, it’s not safe!” Neville squealed. His remembrall wasn’t that important. He’d rather not have Harry lose Gryffindor more house points. But the rest egged Harry and Draco on. Neville sat down and blubbered into his hands, hoping that someone would come into his life that would understand him and not mock him for it. He would only have to wait till the following year—at that time someone who he thought he’d never get used to would arrive. |
40 – Spell Luna stepped into the Gryffindor common room with awe. “What a lovely place!” she exclaimed, eyeing the cushy armchairs and roaring fire. “The tables are this way,” Neville told her, guiding her to a far corner. She was here to help check over his homework, but he let her relish in the new experience of Gryffindor Tower. When she was done marveling, she took up his parchment and her wand, pointing at many words, which changed slightly. “Your spelling is the main thing wrong here. You should use a dictionary.” “Okay, I’ll ask you how to spell things next time.” |
86 – Daring “Luna, don’t stand up on that!” But she climbed nimbly up the statue and was soon balancing on its head. “Look at me, Neville! The view from here is fantastic.” She spread her arms and breathed in deeply. Neville squirmed where he was on the ground. “I think you should get down before you fall.” “Nonsense.” Luna lifted one foot and waved her arms slowly, beseeching the sky above her. “It’s too hard to fall badly.” “You’re too daring for me,” Neville concluded with a shudder, smiling at her wavering form. He poised himself right under her, just in case. |
24 – House Elf “Oh, Winky, please stop crying,” Luna pleaded calmly, seeing the elf wring her hands and take the occasional sip of butterbeer. “Have something to eat at least.” Beside her, Neville watched the house elf in worry. “She doesn’t look like she’s coping too well.” He, personally, had accompanied Luna mainly because of the food (and to be with Luna, of course). Dobby sighed. “We’re hoping she’ll pull through, sir. Winky just needs time.” He clapped his hands and some house elves zoomed over to present an assortment of food. “Thanks!” Neville grabbed some pasties, but Luna kept looking at Winky. |
92 – Chocolate “It’ll make you feel better, honest!” Neville held the chocolate out to Luna, who shrugged and took it. “I’m sorry that I’m not my usual self today,” Luna sighed, taking a bite of the chocolate. It was the anniversary of her mother’s death that day and her manner had been solemn the whole week. Neville squeezed her hand. “No worries. I understand.” His mind flickered to his parents, who were in the hospital beyond sanity. He understood better than anyone else. Smiling, Luna thanked him. She did feel better, but she wasn’t sure if it was the chocolate or Neville. |
36 – Muggle “I don’t know how we’re surviving in the Muggle community,” Neville whispered to Luna as they toured the streets of London. “We must be an odd sight indeed.” “No, we look perfectly normal in these clothes,” Luna assured him, arranging her feathered hat. Muggles stared at them wherever they went and Neville felt more foolish by the moment. “Oi! It’s not Halloween yet,” one Muggle said, sniggering at Luna. “We know, thanks,” she replied calmly, taking Neville’s arm. When the Muggle walked away, she admitted quietly, “Maybe we do look odd.” But she smiled widely and patted Neville’s fluorescent helmet. |
69 – Slap She was here. She was at Hogwarts. And Professor Longbottom didn’t know what in the world to do. Should he try to ask her to go somewhere on a date? It was like fate had brought Luna to him. In the years they’d spent separately, she’d become even more beautiful to him and the same air of carefree happiness lingered around her. He slapped himself to break his thoughts of her. He had to ask her sometime. First, he had to grade these exams. “Neville? Are you alright?” Professor Lovegood asked, peeking in after hearing a slap. “Dandy,” he replied. |
13 – Quidditch He couldn’t get the ridiculous image of Luna’s hat out of his mind. The raven kept squawking loudly over the din of the students. Ginny tore towards the keeper’s ring with the quaffle in hand. A collective silence ensued, then-- “Gryffindor scores, leading by ten points!” Neville cheered with the rest, pumping his fist in the air. Beside him, Luna frowned slightly, but tapped the raven to make it screech louder. “You’re just jealous Gryffindor’s in the lead,” Neville accused jokingly. She turned to him mildly. “You’re just jealous you’re hatless.” A flicker of a smile appeared on her face. |
70 – Teem The Great Hall was crowded on Valentine’s Day and Neville had to talk to her before class started. He craned his neck over the students; he still wasn’t the tallest, though he was in seventh year. She waved at him as he caught sight of her and drifted over to him. “Happy Valentine’s Day,” she said, reaching out and squeezing both his hands. Her brow furrowed slightly when she saw the large gash on his cheek. “You’re hurt.” “What’s new?” Neville forced a smile. “Let’s go somewhere else that’s not teeming with students, shall we?” Luna suggested, taking his hand. |
29 – Penseive “Good bye, Neville,” Luna whispered on platform nine and three quarters before he disappeared through the barrier. “Bye.” He wanted to hug her very badly; thankfully, she obliged and wrapped her arms around him. “I’ll keep in touch this summer,” he assured her. He couldn’t imagine not writing to her. Luna smiled. “That sounds splendid.” Unexpectedly she reached up and brushed her lips against his cheek, making his cheeks go aflame with pleasure and surprise. He wished then that he had a penseive so he could reflect upon that moment, and all moments he shared with Luna, for that matter. |
50 – Boggart “Okay, class, step forward with your wand at the ready,” Professor Moody growled. His electric blue eye scanned the crowd of students. “Lovegood, you go first. Say it nice and loud.” Luna floated to the front of the class and the boggart was released. It swooped towards her, showing her father lying in a puddle of blood. The class gasped and covered their eyes. She raised her wand bravely, but the figure changed…into Neville, blood trickling from his mouth. The class emitted sounds of interest in her boggart. |
44 – Ford Anglia It was her first year at Hogwarts School. Her large eyes roamed the Great Hall before she dug into her heaping plate of food, taking in the star-scattered ceiling, the long house tables, and the Ford Anglia flying past the window—the Ford Anglia flying past the window? Luna blinked hard and looked again, but sure enough, a car was nose-diving to the ground. Maybe this was a special first-day-of-term amusement. She wasn’t the only one who’d noticed, though. A pudgy Gryffindor gaped at the car and when he saw her watching it in amazement as well, he grinned shyly. |
97 – Dictionary His fingers stretched upward to the shelf where the thick dictionary lay—he was almost there, but he couldn’t reach it. He bit his lip and stood on his tiptoes, but couldn’t touch it. “I’ll never get it at this rate,” Neville moaned to himself. He turned around tiredly. “Here, let me help you.” A first year Ravenclaw student with radish earrings took out her wand and summoned the dictionary, then handed it to him. Wow, I feel stupid. Neville blushed. Not only had he been outwitted by a girl, but he’d been outsmarted by a first year too! “Thanks.” |
9 – Defence Against the Dark Arts “Excuse me, could you tell me the way to the Defense Against Dark Arts classroom?” Luna asked politely. The first day of Hogwarts was definitely confusing and the school was so big! The boy who’d smiled at her last evening nodded. “Just go down this staircase and turn into the right corridor. The Defence Against Dark Arts classroom is on the right.” “Thank you.” Luna offered him a friendly smile. He was very nice. Neville returned her smile. “You’re welcome.” She waved vaguely and stuck her schedule into her book bag, then proceeded down the staircase to the first floor. |
81 – Depression “Luna,” Neville started. She slowly looked up from the book she was reading. “Yes?” “I think I’m depressed.” He traced the scar on the side of his head thoughtfully. “Seventh year is just so hard and I don’t know how I can finish all this homework. Plus, those Carrows are so terribly unbearable.” Luna patted his hand lightly. “You’re not depressed, just a bit worn out. We all are. What I do when I am sad is I think about all the things that have gone right that day. Ones you think about it, there are lots of happy things.” |
18 – Whomping Willow “Don’t ever go near it,” Neville warned Luna as they strode past the Whomping Willow, which swayed in the breeze. “It’s the most vicious tree you will ever meet.” Luna stopped at looked up at the thick branches. “Even worse than the Thwarting Thornthistle tree?” He’d never heard of that tree before. He expected it was one of the crazy plants she thought existed. “Yes, even more than that,” Neville replied so he wouldn’t have to argue over its existence. “The Thwarting Thornthistle doesn’t exist, silly,” Luna giggled. Dang it. “I mean, I thought you meant the Thrashing Tuliper tree!” |
37 – Animagus Professor McGonagall strode by, eyeing Neville and Luna kindly through her spectacles. She placed a finger to her lips and followed the voices of the Carrows. When she walked down the hall and turned into a cat, Neville and Luna sucked in their breath. “I wonder how much effort it takes to become an animagus?” Neville wondered aloud, watching the cat disappear around a corner. “It takes a lot of work,” Luna answered. “If I were an animagus I would like to be a margle, which is distantly related to the nargle.” Neville chuckled. “Me too.” Because you’d be one. |
60 – Joke Neville and Luna loved sharing jokes. Their sense of humor was the same—unique and sort of cheesy. Jokes were sometimes the only things that kept them going, as Hogwarts wasn’t the same as it used to. “Listen to this one that I made up by myself,” Neville chuckled, writing it down on his parchment with a spare quill (he finally bought some). “Knock knock.” Luna leaned back in her chair and smiled. “Who’s there?” “You know.” “You know who?” “Bahaha,” Neville laughed. “Get it? You-know-who.” Luna let out a loud burst of laughter, rocking back and forth. “That’s funny!” |
11 – History of Magic Neville often struggled with memorizing the dates for his History of Magic class, so Luna Lovegood was often seen aiding him the night before an exam. “It’s impossible,” he declared, burying his head in his hands. She patted his arm. “Don’t be silly. Copy down this timeline and enchant it so the categories are in different colors, and you’ll remember better. It is an old Ravenclaw trick.” She attempted to pry a hand from his face. “I can’t…” was his muffled reply. He peeked through his fingers as she tapped each category for him and felt a rush of gratitude. |
58 – Hoot The night was eerie. Walking at midnight was even riskier business. But Neville had grown accustomed to doing things that were out of his comfort zone by now. Running a group of rebels under the Carrows’ noses was very stressful, a role h had taken with passion. He and Luna walked silently together on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Her silvery hair was shining like a light in the darkness and he never appreciated it as much as he did now. A loud hoot from the forest made them jump. Luna grasped onto his hand. She didn’t let go. |
3 – Transfiguration As they walked to the Quidditch Pitch for the match, Neville couldn’t help but ask about Luna’s raven hat. “It’s merely a combination of spells I learned in Transfiguration and Charms,” Luna replied, patting her hat. “Transfiguration? How did you use Transfiguration?” Neville was amazed at her talent and nearly tripped over a stone. “I transfigured the roaring lion I used to have into a raven, of course.” Neville paused to think. “Oh yes, I suppose that makes sense, Luna.” It was Luna’s turn to stumble when she was adjusting her hat, but Neville held her arm to steady her. |
