Violet thought of how her vain, self-absorbed Uncle Hamlet, who she hadn't seen much of since the Neo-Alliance War, would react if he were faced with a pumpkin-headed hobgoblin. "You could use it to scare someone," she volunteered, "for their own good, of course." |
Sirius almost moved to a seat closer when he saw Ash come in, but was cut short when the professor began to speak. So, no pies then? Disappointing, but this sounded intriguing as well. The third year pondered the question, listening to the others chirp out their answers. The only thing he could think was that it would be useful in Halloween for a quick costume, but he kept that to himself. |
"Merrrrcer," Milo responded, his eyes still on the pumpkin in front of him, but his ears on the discussions around him, and particularly on Mercer's and Mr Hernandez'. All to the better, because Hernandez had made a good point. "Thirteen is a strong number." Easier on the stomach in general. Milo had never ever liked the way some of these teachers locked them inside the classroom when lessons started. Nothing had happened yet, but by making it seem like the norm, they were clearly setting the stage, and Milo was onto them. He'd feel better about it once he could magic his way through walls. The click of the lock made him jolt suddenly, which in turn made him knock the pumpkin forward the last inch or so all at once; it teetered over the edge of the desk and out of sight. Not half a second later, he heard the sickening thunk of stone on pumpkin flesh, and shuddered. As Milo knelt up and leaned forward to see if the pumpkin had come to as traumatic an end as it sounded, he offered an answer to the possible villain's question. "If you need a replacement pumpkin." He peered over the other side of the desk, gripping it in both hands, tilting the stool below him precariously, and staring at the pumpkin innards leaking onto the floor. "Off with his head." |
Thirteen, huh? Mercer gave the professor AND Milo a thoughtful look as he piled that NEW learning into his brainbox. Thirteen was the number where you did NOT throw up and have to start over. Although starting over was sort of fun. Like you emptied it all out and got a do-over. "Pumpkin heads would be good if you ever wanted to know how you'd taste as a pie, I think. I think I would taste bad, but as a pumpkin head, I would be tasty. Also then I'd smell like pumpkin, and maybe that would trick anyone trying to track me by scent. They'd be like 'oh the boy is gone and all that's left is a giant pumpkin head, so we should give up hunting him and have tea'." |
At least she wasn't the only one. Cassidy was her only solace. They'd be suffering together and Kinsay would find a way to make it everyone's problem. Despite this, however, she smiled for Evan because he was a decent human. UNLIKE Professor's who held 9AM lessons the morning after HALLOWEEN!!! "Hey, Evan," she offered him a quiet hello in greeting before sinking back into her seat. Unfortunately (or perhaps, fortunately), in all her chaos, she hadn't seen Cooper slip into the room, as angry as he was. As class began, she had very little interest in participating. And yet, she was raising her hand. You're welcome, Professor Horrible. "When you have a raging headache and need to get rid of it." And if that worked, she would not mind taking one of those potions right now. His move. |
Feet planted firmly to the floor and toes pressing against the bottoms of his shoes, the seventh year made every attempt to ground himself and not focus on all these other distractions. It was NEWT year, after all, and while he had practically been preparing for it all during fourth year as a coping mechanism...he would still rather not lose focus. Especially on a subject he did not fare particularly well in, though was considerably better ever since Olivia had started tutoring him. Catching Rosa's arrival out of the corner of his eye, Cooper managed to offer the charming Hufflepuff a small smile after she collected her pumpkin but soon had his attention glued on Professor Hernandez. On any other day, Cooper would have found this to be a delight. Something light and relatively easy to brew but with a transformative element that could be tricky to brew without proper attention and care. A good practice potion, if you will. But, unfortunately, he had left his playful mood somewhere along the path of yesterday evening. The one younger Slytherin's comment about a fashion show was a hearty squirt of lemon juice to the eye as well. Maybe he should feign illness and excuse himself to the hospital wing - though, to be honest, he may not need to feign anything thanks to the way his emotions were churning his insides. The only glimmer of escape from his thoughts was when Charlie's little brother spoke in an incredibly not subtle manner, not that he felt his friend would ever fall for such tricks to begin with. He offered the first year a brief, but mildly amused shake of the head. There was also the whole Milo and his Humpty Dumpty pumpkin incident...and what was said after. Not one to take such things too seriously considering how elaborate the storytelling could get between himself and Mercer, Cooper simply wrote off the final comment as a bit of dark humor and not that, well, Milo was actually imagining decapitating his own brother for that spare pumpkin. As for answering himself, Cooper would opt out and instead labeled his parchment accordingly. Quote:

Potions was tough, okay?? It was definitely one of the MANY subjects she wasn't good at - especially the brewing part of it - but she was trying her best. But, okay. Question. Why would anyone even want to turn their head into a pumpkin? She definitely wouldn't. "Maybe when you don't want to show your face." |
Truthfully, the Pompion Potion didn't come into Cassidy's mind when she saw the pumpkin in front of her. In Cassidy's defence, however, she wasn't in the mood to think anyway. She'd much prefer being curled in bed right now. Or eating. Alas, she'd only woken up just in time to prep for class without the meal part of it. She wouldn't say she was regretful, though. But also, no way in the world would she want a pumpkin for a head. Not even to hide herself. She had other ways and spells to use on herself for that. Personally, Cassidy found it a weird question to start the day. Normally she didn't mind a bit of creativity, but not today. Not with her groggy morning mood. Nevertheless, the Gryffindor raised her hand. "Halloween costume maybe, professor. Not that I'd want to have a pumpkin for a head, but who knows maybe someone would." Just a tiny nod to last night's happenings, that was. |
"Well for Halloween it would make a really cool part of a costume!" Maxine smiled, or to curse someone ... but that was curse .. not a potion. |
Lisa had entered the classroom and saw V and Stewie sitting together which made her stomach so weird flippy things. She stared at them before choosing a seat not too close but just right so there was some distance between them. She did offer them both a smile and Serena too. However, she wasn’t feeling right so she thought it’d be best to be on her own. A pumpkin head? She was about to offer the answer of a Halloween costume when a peer already answered that. “When you don’t have a helmet or perhaps a distraction technique in Quidditch?” |

He figured it was bound to happen. Javier whipped out his wand and quickly waved it, clearing out the smashed pumpkin and heading around his desk to grab a new one. "Since I have a few spares..." he said, re-emerging a moment later with a fresh one, "There will be no need for beheadings today. And since the potion wears off relatively fast, you will soon have a decapitated head instead of a pumpkin," he added, JUUUUST as an FYI to anyone getting any ideas. Miles. Quote:
"There will be NO cannibalism in this class, Mister Branxton," he said with a small chuckle. "The potion would wear off far faster than anyone would be able to harvest a piece of your...pumpkin head to try and eat," he explained. Merlin he felt silly saying that sentence. Quote:
Which sounded awful, quite frankly. Hopefully no one had skipped their morning coffee before they got to the brewing part! Quote:

"Very good answers, everyone. Truthfully, you can use this potion to turn your head into a pumpkin for any number of reasons. Is there a real practical reason to do so? Probably not," he admitted with a soft grin. "BUT it's fun nonetheless. Not to mention it's a great potion to help you master your brewing skills and help you fine tune your measuring skills, as it is VERY easy to mess up and if you DO mess it up...well, what possible side effects do you think may occur if the potion is not brewed correctly?" he asked them, raising his eyebrow. OOC: Onto question 2! You will have an additional 24 hours to answer this before we move on to the next part. As always let me know if you need help! Quick side note - canon wise, there are no listed side effects if brewed incorrectly so, once again, BE CREATIVE and have fun! |
Oh. Okay, so her idea wouldn't work after all. She wasn't surprised. She'd never even tried making her head into a pumpkin, so what did she know about it? She gave a little nod in reply. She got a little laugh out of the whole 'pumpkin with a migraine' comment he'd given someone else. Anyway...the people with comments about costumes and distractions during Quidditch had gotten closer to the right answer than she had. She really needed to start thinking less outside the box. Or maybe more outside the box. One of those. So, wait...there were side effects to messing up on this? I mean, of course there were, but...that just gave Delilah a good reason to start being concerned about what they were about to do. What if she turned herself into a rotten pumpkin or something? Ewww... Hey, that sounded like a good answer! "What if you accidentally turned your head into a rotten pumpkin?" she suggested, raising her hand. Or ended up with orange spots on your face? Yeah, uhh...could she just try this potion on someone else instead? |
Aaaaaaaand this is how Dia ends up failing potions. A basically useless potion that does something stupid? Ugh. At least give them something useful, Professor! "Probably nothing." Else, why would the Professor have thrown the question out like that? And the detail about how it was a great potion to fine-tune their measuring? Totally had to be nothing, right? |
Huh? Maybe her answer wasn’t much appreciated for it didn’t seem to draw much of a response from Hernandez. Still, there was the blanket remark about the answers provided being ‘very good’. Aria shrugged then proceeded to brainstorm an answer for the next question. Hmm. Delilah’s response had Aria laughing - softly, of course, so as to not disrupt the lesson. Someone being turned into a rotten pumpkin… just picturing that situation had her amused. Aria waved her hand around once more. “For a period of time, one’s head probably could change from a pumpkin to their regular head then the cycle repeats. So maybe they have the pumpkin head for a few seconds or a minute then POP! They have their regular head. POP! Pumpkin head and so on.” |
Again, Cooper would have been incredibly enthusiastic for some impractical potion brewing on any other day. The fine tuning and attention to detail was perfect for NEWT revision and having a silly outcome to get a chuckle from it afterwards too. At this moment, however, when Professor Hernandez casually mentioned that there was unlikely to be any real practical application to the brew...well...the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end and he shoved his quill back into his inkwell so quickly that a little splash of ink dotted his parchment and got on his fingers. Leaning back a bit, the Ravenclaw casually glanced over to Lydia and may have chuckled a little under his breath as his head bowed down again to try and rub the ink off his finger. An impractical cleaning technique, but it was a distraction while he mellowed out enough to offer some sort of response this time. "Cauldron could explode," he answered abruptly and with a gruffer tone than usual. |
Raising her hand again ... "Could you head be stuck as a pumpkin ... forever???" That seems liked a rather awful side effect if she did say so herself, who would want to stuck as a pumpkin forever .... |
Victoria had stayed quiet with her head on her desk for the first question, but at the second question she sighed as she sat up, noting that she'd probably lose points soon if she didn't. Not like she cared that much, but it wasn't something worth losing points over. "Is it easier to lose your head if its a pumpkin?" she said with morbid curiosity. But like...weren't pumpkins easy to slice? She supposed she could have asked a better and less...violent....question. But whatever. V was too tired to be concerned about others. |
Truthfully, kudos to the rest of his classmates. Evan had chosen to remain silent during discussion, other than a whispered hello to Ash as well when she had joined. He couldn't think of any practical uses or needs for a pumpkin head, though they'd all certainly been creative enough. Some of the answers were... odder than others, and it seemed most really just gave more of a feel of what they could reasonably expect from the potion. But that seemed worthwhile and helpful on it's own. When the second question was posed, Evan considered mentioned it'd be easier for a first year to nom on your noggin, his mind still on some of the more chuckle worthy answers, but he didn't think Professor Hernandez would appreciate. He raised his hand, "I imagine you could accidentally make your pumpkin look different colors if not properly brewed. Which if your goal was disguise, might not give the desired affect." Hiding in a pumpkin patch with a giant purple pumpkin head would probably be pretty conspicuous. |
And so passes... that one pumpkin. RIPP. Rest in pumpkin pieces. Milo took the replacement from Mr Hernandez with a simple, "Oh," which could have been taken any which way. 'Oh, that's a shame.' 'Oh, that's harrowing.' 'Oh, I don't mind.' 'Oh ho ho, it's magic, you know.' He placed the pumpkin on its side and lay his head down on it, listening closely. No beheadings today. Maybe tomorrow. He stayed like this, blinking his eyes hard several times, and grimacing just once, and watching Mercer and trying to see if he could track the ticking of his brain just by watching his face. And he stayed like this still longer as he guessed at an answer. "Indigestion." That was a side effect of many things. |
"It could turn your head into an itty-bitty pumpkin, maybe, if you didn't brew it right,"Violet volunteered, thinking to herself that that would look silly and not be frightening at all. |
Jacoby was seriously imagining all the ways this potion could go wrong. There is spontaneous combustion, wrong color, upset tummy, shrunken head... His eyes grew bigger. Raising his hand "Like someone else said, could your head be smaller, would it dry out and look a lot more like a shrunken head?" He was so sure his parents would be proud of him knowing something like that. Come on he really only wanted to learn potions so he could make things go boom and aid in an mischief. |
Indigestion? Like... like because they were full of pumpkin in their STOMACH as well as in their head? Mercer gave Milo a wide eyed look, because Milo's brain was AMAZING. It would be a shame if his head was full of pumpkin instead. "It would be real bad if you got the potion wrong and your head turns into spaghetti squash." Much too small for a head. Plus full of spaghetti. |
See, there was a problem here. You should never worry about having the side effects of a pumpkin head. THE PUMPKIN HEAD WAS THE SIDE EFFECT. YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE A PUMPKIN FOR A HEAD. Ash was quite confused by the light-hearted potion, and it showed. "Your head would be a pumpkin. That's the biggest problem." And yes, she was hung up on this fact. It agitated and frustrated her. Pumpkin??? Head??? Huh??? |
Very easy to mess up?? o_______o Valentina already started to feel nervous, definitely not looking forward to brewing the potion now. ugh. She stayed quiet for a few moments before raising her hand, somewhat hesitantly. "Maybe.. your head will turn into a pumpkin at all??" There could be no side effect at all. She tapped her nails against her desk, really not liking some of the suggestions that her classmates came up with. Scary. |
Been here allll along :) Nerina didn’t care what the use was, rocking a pumpkin on one’s head would ruin any chances of showing off a beautiful head of hair, so she was decidedly against it. ...Even if it did have a sort of vintage Halloween vibe to the look. She imagined all manner of disaster awaited those who weren’t fortunate enough to be good at potions. There were worse things than the pumpkin not forming at all. ”A messed up potion would probably end in you looking even more silly than you would with an actual, successful pumpkin formed on your head. Maybe you’d turn a ghastly shade of orange. It’s not everyone’s color, you know.” She turned her own locks orange once and it hadn’t been pretty. |
