Valencia considered for a long moment. There were plenty of things to say. She chewed her lip before raising her hand. "He was involved in one of the most infamous Wizarding Wars -- the Global War." she paused for a moment. "His duel with Grindelwald happened at the same time that another blood status related war was happening in the muggle world." Fun |
Since it had been clear from the writing on the board what the topic was going to be, Ivy had already started mulling over the things she could remember reading and hearing about Albus Dumbledore. He was such a significant person in history, even if it had been ages ago, that it was hard not to know something about him. She raised her hand. "He founded the Order of the Phoenix to fight against Voldemort during the First and Second Wizarding Wars." |
Phoebe actually felt physically lighter at that shared glance with the professor, like YES the world was still normal somewhere deep down and there were people who could be trusted to do the right thing. She hoped she was interpreting that right, since it might mean 'ah, yes, young grasshopper, you and I both agree on horrible and terrible ideology'. That would be a bad glance. Dumbledore was an interesting topic, she supposed, although definitely someone they already knew something about just through commonly held history. Phoebe supposed there was the Goon Squad answer, and she was prepared to say it. Make everyone happy... well, make everyone unhappy, but not the Goon Squad. "Dumbledore took a very short-sighted stand against You-Know-Who and protected the Muggleborn and blood traitors who stood against him." Phoebe put a comforting hand on Kizzy's shoulder and gave it a little squeeze. Still here, little sister. Still a good person. |
The smile meant a lot. He knew that the Professor had given that greeting to all the other students too but just a small smile was enough to make him feel a little more normal. However, a cynical voice in the back of his head, reminded him that he ought to be on his guard for a smile could hide more sinister things. He watched more students come in and the lesson began. They were learning about... Dumbledore? Was this a class that the Neo-alliance supported? Hadnt Dumbledore been accepting of all backgrounds? He sat up a little straighter in the classroom when the discussion started, noting his fellow students responses. After a bit, he found himself smiling at his fellow housemate’s, Pheobe’s, comment. It was a good way to put it..... being safe. Dumbledore did love things Muggle wise! He found them fascinating. “He once said... It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be...” he began before biting his lip to hold his tongue further. He cleared his throat, looking away from the Professor and shrugging his shoulders. “Unsure what he meant by that... He could speak Mermish.” Or so the books insinuated. |
Ah, of course Quinn's been here the whole time, what are *you* talking about? Sitting on his little Muggleborn side, Quinn tried to think of all the things he had read about Albus Dumbledore. There was actually quite a lot—but a lot of stuff could probably be taken in a very not-so-nice direction by Alliance people. Quinn tried to touch on something that wouldn't get him punished. "He got killed here at Hogwarts, in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower." Morbid, he knew, but safe nonetheless. |
Dahlia sat quietly until the door to the classroom was closed signalling the start of the lesson. Letting out a small breath, she shifted slightly in her chair in a sad attempt to sit up straighter. As the first question was asked, Lia picked up her quill and began neatly jotting down everything that was being said. If she was focused on writing she didn't have to focus on much else... well except for giving an answer to the question. Raising her hand, she gave the simplest reply she could think of right away. "He had been sorted into Gryffindor at the start of his first year." Her voice was very quiet and unsteady when she spoke, hopefully Recard had been able to hear her. |
As he felt a yawn coming up , Minjae put his hand in front of his mouth to hide it and rubbed away the tears in the corner of his eyes after yawning. He could really do with a sleeping potion, one that wouldn't give him any nightmares but the reason why he hadn't seen the Healer or the Potions Professor was because he was afraid that they would get in trouble for trying to help a Muggleborn. Not to mention that he didn't want to add on their work on top of everything else. The best solution was to make it himself , which he was perfectly capable of but he didn't trust his attention span at the moment. So sleepless nights it was. Upon hearing the first question, Minjae wondered why it mattered who Albus "way too many middle names" Dumbledore was. Because it did not. Still, by now he knew from first hand experience what would happen if he defied. Even if The Hoods weren't visibly present at the moment he always had a feeling that they were always monitoring. "He uh..." another yawn escaped him. "Sorry, He was old. Around 150 " Of course he knew more but he was too tired to think right now. |
Yeah. It didn't matter. Ash could do this cavalier attitude all day. Because if it wasn't going to kill her or scar her for life, it wasn't a real punishment. "Sorry. Sup' professor Recard." Was that better, or worse? "Dumbledore didn't just beat Grindelwald. He was his friend. Maybe they were dating. Maybe they were good business partners. Don't know. They like, dreamed about their visions for the future. Which in this case was the greater good." She tapped her fingers three times on the desk, and let the silence stretch on. "Just like wizards do now." Some things never change. |
like DumbledoRO is gonna miss a lesson on Dumbledore!!! Pls Bernie felt very uncomfortable these days being singled out by the professors in any kind of way. Before this school year, she would have basked in the attention; craved it, sought out it, even. But all she was getting this year was negative attention and bad vibes only. So she was currently slumped in the corner or wherever Recard had put her, biding her time until she had to answer the question. "Albus Dumbledore had a younger brother, Aberforth, who really liked goats," she answered as monotone as possible, as though she were reciting from a book. She HAD read a book on this topic, though it was ages ago. Some Life and Times something something by some Skeeter lady. Anyway, continuing her answer: "And his little sister, Ariana, was att---" Oh no. Oh no. Oh no no no no no. The sudden realization of why Recard had brought up Albus Dumbledore hit her face (and showed) like a big red blush. But Bernie had to soldier on, didn't she. She squared her little shoulders. She regretted even volunteering an answer now, didn't she. "Ariana Dumbledore was attacked by local Muggles when Albus and his siblings were kids. So his dad went to Azkaban for getting r--righteous vengeance on them. They--- they, the Muggles, they deserved it, didn't they, professor? For attacking a witch just for practicing her magic?" Bernie's blue eyes had a definite spark of fury in them as she looked to Recard, and then looked away toward the windows. For no reason. But also... why was Bernie always bringing up the topic of Azkaban in this class. |
Okay um...hmmm. How much info did Moose retain from reading some the history books up in the library the past few days. Some of them mentioned this Headmaster Dumbledore guy. He dug deep into his brain place and picked the closest thing he could think of about the man. "He had three middle names. Brian David Gilbert or something like that." Moose wasn't really sure. But it was a good an answer he could give. He listened to some of the other answers and heard clearly something about how the guy's sister was beaten by Muggles. Great...so that's where this lesson was going. The Slytherin slumped into his seat a bit more and tried to look hidden. Think that's about as much participation he was gonna give this class now if it was going that way. |
Kale could feel the worried eyes of his friends on the back of his head and the reassuring pressure of Flynn's hand. He wasn't so far gone that he was immune to that attention. But he didn't have the energy to plaster on a smile today. Sorry, friends. He was trying. This was him trying. In class, there was something or other about Dumbledore. Usual and normal Kale would've answered with a peppy grin and a flag waving hand about how Dumbledore was a famously fab knitter, but this Kale wasn't that Kale. This Kale was quiet. |
Cece smiled a little at Kinsay's answer. Worried a little at Kale's lack of one. As for hers, well, she had to think. Dumbledore had a LOT of interesting facts about him. Like, the guy was a legend? It was just that her classmates had gotten to the more well known stuff first, which meant the fifth year had to do a little digging around in her mind to come up with something. "Based on all the jobs he held during his life, it seems pretty clear that the guy was a natural born leader." Put him in front of a crowd and he'd probably have everyone on board with what he was saying in no time at all. The beard probably helped. It gave off all the wise vibes. |
There were a lot of cool things about Albus Dumbledore. There were a lot of not so cool things, too. Practically all of them had been said already and truthfully Louise had started to zone out after a moment. Even though she had been looking forward to this class (because it was danger-free), her mind couldn't stop thinking about the field trip and the chaos that ensued... Right. She tore her mind away from it again and raised her hand. "He had like, seven middle names." She couldn't remember the exact number, but she knew there was an obscene amount. |
Heath blinked, confused by Recard’s eyebrow raise at him. Had he done something wrong? If he had, he had no idea what! Story of my life, he thought darkly. Even when I think I’m doing the right thing, it turns out wrong somehow… It was only Claudine’s appearance beside him that distracted him from his frustration. He returned her greeting with a slight nod, too afraid to draw unnecessary attention to her with words or a smile. He reluctantly looked up as the lesson began, and it was only then that he noticed the writing on the board. Dumbledore, huh? He already had an idea where this lesson was going. This was going to relate to Dumbledore's ties to Gellert Grindelwald, wasn't it? Given the current headmaster's ideology, it seemed the most likely route. That got him thinking about Dumbledore and Grindelwald's relationship. It was a tragic story, really… two lovers torn apart by ideological differences. It was enough to make him feel sorry for them, or it would've been had he not seen firsthand what damage Grindelwald's ideology could cause. Didn't they also have a blood pact not to fight each other? That concept intrigued Heath, but he didn't feel comfortable mentioning that out loud. He had no problem recalling facts or quoting lines, but when he had to put his thoughts into his own words, he got tongue-tied, especially when he was distressed. Knowing his mood today, it was only a matter of time until he said the wrong thing, so just in case, he wasn't mentioning anything to do with Grindelwald or Dumbledore's involvement in the wizarding wars! He opted for a safer answer, one that (hopefully) wouldn't be interpreted as anti Neo-Alliance. "Dumbledore studied alchemy under Nicholas Flamel," he said after raising his hand. |
Dragging their eyes from the view, Nem turned their attention to Recard again, and then to the board... and then back to the window again. Dumbledore. The bloke appeared in all the texts they'd managed to get their hands on about Grindelwald, and Nem had done a little extra reading too. That Skeeter book, The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore, they'd actually given that a second read through, and occasionally scanned it again for another look at certain details, usually those applicable to Grindelwald, though not always. After a moment, Nem looked away from the window once more, levelled a steady stare at Recard, tilted their chair back on two legs, and said nothing. Albus Dumbledore? Don't know her. Not heard that name. Never experienced that emotion. |
So far, there were no Hoods. This cheered Claudine up just a bit, though her boyfriend’s tenseness did not help. The girl could understand why Heath was that way. She now drew her attention to Reccard once more. The confirmation of the topic did not come of a surprise, of course. The first question was simple enough; there was so much they all should know about Albus Dumbledore. His name was going to live on forever in history, just as Harry Potter’s. After a couple of minutes, the Snakette raised her hand. “Dumbledore held the positions of Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards as well as Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot.” |
Octavia was seated uncharacteristically in the back of the classroom. It wasn't the safest place in the classroom but it was the best place to observe everyone who was in attendance. Like Nem. She could glance at him without him (or the professor) being aware. There were questions being asked? About Dumbledore, but she wasn't fully paying attention. Only enough so that she could pass as not staring at Nem. It was a good distraction for everything. Everything? Everything. Tavie wasn't much in the mood for actively participating or being her usually peppy self. Too much happening in the school for that. And she purposefully didn't sit with her friends. They all felt too much, and she didn't want to feel anything right now. But she did like stealing glances at Nem. He looked nice. Oh and.... something about Dumbledore? Tavie halfheartedly pretended to think. |
SPOILER!!: Just playing catch up If she was being honest, the lesson was already somewhat boring to her, something that usually never happened but she had so many other things on at the moment that surely that wasn’t a surprise to most of the teachers? How any child at Hogwarts could focus was just beyond her. Ingrid listened quietly as fact after fact was spouted off from her fellow students, her own quill moving so that she count note them down, just in case they were useful although in truth, she had already known most of them. Putting up her own hand now, she added to the list of facts “Rita Skeeter, the journalist I guess, wrote a book about him talking about his life and lies” because according to her, he wasn't exactly a great person even though he'd done some pretty amazing things. |
SPOILER!!: Replies! Once they were all done answering, the class had compiled a hefty list of facts about Dumbledore, which was now on the board behind her. Quote:
"Now, since his life spanned such a long time, we are going to focus on only ONE aspect of it today," she explained. Surprise! This WASN'T an anti-muggle lesson after all - despite the few opportunities she'd given them to put on a show about being all pro-alliance. Too bad their performances hadn't been witnessed by the squad, but then again, she was quite glad they hadn't made an appearance. Hopefully it stayed that way. "We are going to focus on his relationship with Harry Potter. Specifically, the fact that he figured out that Harry Potter was one of Voldemort's Horcruxes. Many of you may remember that, during the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry entered the memories of Severus Snape and learned this fact through those memories - Dumbledore HIMSELF never told him," she elaborated. "Now, my question for you is this. WHY? Why do you think Albus hid the truth from Harry? I don't want you to tell me whether he was right or wrong in doing so - I just want to know what YOU think his motivation was," she added. There would be plenty of time for them to dive into the morality of that decision later... OOC: Hey guys! Thanks so much for participating so far! Moving right along to question two! As Gabi instructed, just give me the WHY behind Dumbledore's decision to keep Harry in the dark about being a Horcrux. IN REGARDS TO RECENT EVENTS IN THE COURTYARD- All those who have been taken to "separate" student housing, your characters would have been escorted to and from class. Since this lesson is ~technically~ AFTER the announcement, you can RP your students having knowledge of what happened in the courtyard/separation of the students and troublemakers from the rest of the population/escorting to and from classes/etc in any posts from here on out. If you have any questions on this, please let me know! We will be moving on once again in about 24 hours! |
Why? WHY did Albus hide the truth from Harry? Heck if Bernie knew... what... she shook her head at this question, still stuck in her feelings, but gaining insight from feeling.... all the feelings.... always... with the feels... "He was doing it for the greater good," she intoned solemnly, suddenly struck by an idea. "As in, Dumbledore was just doing what he believed was right, and what could save as many people as possible while also considering how he felt for Harry. He probably realized that some people would be lost and some would be saved along the way. I bet--- I bet emotion clouded his judgment some." Did that make any sense? Bernie looked down at her hands, suddenly struck by another sad thought but not one she wanted to share. She was done talking. |
Phoebe was actually surprised that they were going to focus on the Harry Potter aspect of Dumbledore's history. Of all the things - his relationships with Muggles, his sister's tragic story, how much the Neo-Alliance probably hated him - it was surprising that they were going to focus on the most famous wizard in recent history. Phoebe raised her hand, not exactly sure what the right answer was on this topic. Sometimes, it was hard to know what exactly was dangerous. "Um, I think Dumbledore knew that it was too much for Harry Potter to handle as a kid. If he told him out of the gate that he had to die to save the world, then I think Potter would have freaked out. But he cultivated this hero mentality in him, so when he did find out, his natural inclination at that point was a willingness to die." |
Quinn thought for a moment—why would Dumbledore not tell Harry? Phoebe and Bernies's answers seemed as good as any, but Quinn couldn't just steal them."I think it might be a bit of both—Harry knowing he had to die could've beet detrimental, but Dumbledore mightn't've had the heart to tell Harry either way. I don't think there's any real way to know for sure without asking him." So, he could sort of steal their answers. |
It was nice to hear a chuckle. He hadn’t heard a chuckle in a while. It was really nice to hear that ;_; - especially with how distraught and upset he was feeling after the Courtyard. The seventh year Lion nodded at his Professor’s response, noting what she had said, and offering a warm smile. The next question gave him pause. Why hadn’t Albus told Harry about the fact that he was Voldemort’s horcrux? The quote which was still ringing through his mind prompted him to think down a similar path. He raised his hand to offer his thought. “Perhaps it had to do with Dumbledore’s belief in prophecies... Maybe he felt as if he told Harry that he was a horcrux then Harry would turn out that way and fulfill that prophecy.... He wanted Harry Potter to make his own choices and grow to be his own man..? People are capable of both truly incredible and terrible things...” |
Valencia listened to the comments when a dark expression fell over her. "Or it's none of the above." she suggested. "It's a common brainwashing tactic." Brainwashing might have been too harsh a word. "You keep a certain bit of knowledge away from a person as you indoctrinate them and by the time you add on the last piece, it's too far down the path and the person is already sold on the theory." Yes. She had brushed up on psychology. For reasons. |
"The truth scares people just as much as death." Tavie supplied in a detached tone. Her quill took notes for her but she almost made it stop. Dumbledore? Harry Potter? Not the most fascinating part of history. Maybe this class would become interesting later, but right now Nem was still more fascinating. It was so beneficial right now that Tavie could multitask. "Harry had to die, but he didn't have to know until he was committed to the cause. Sometimes you have to set aside feelings for one so society can survive." |
