Common Room
|
It had been such a long day. Sophie yawned and rubbed at her eyes as she followed the rest of the serpents into their dungeon common room. She blinked around in surprise. When she first heard she would be living in the dungeons, she had been rather offended, but this wasn't too bad. Sure, it was a bit dimly lit, but the leather furniture was quite stylish. And the view of the lake was downright impressive. Although it was late, Sophie decided to relax in one of the leather armchairs, soaking up the ambiance of her new home. It was a bit chilly, but that didn't really bother her. She always ran a bit hot anyway. Serpents might be cold-blooded, but she definitely wasn't. The fireplace crackled with inviting flames, its light flickering over her pale face. Yes, she could get used to this. |

But this someone would never know she still yearned for his good looks. Nope NERRPPP nope. Then breakfast happened...and then the whole DAY happened, and Aboli was wiped out. She collapsed onto the couch next to the armchair the younger girl was currently curled into. "Heya." She said in a tired way. "How's it going, firstie? I don't remember your name, sorry..." She sighed and sat up slowly. "As your prefect, I should know your name. I apologize," she went back and forth between adoring the first years and finding them supremely annoying. This one seemed quiet and timid, though, and that always made her think of her brother. |
Quote:
"That's all right," she said. "My name is Sophie. Your name is Aboli, right?" Sophie had made a note of remembering the names of most of the prefects, especially the Slytherin ones. She wanted to be on their good side. "What is it like being a prefect?" she asked, truly interested. "Do you have any special privileges?" |
Quote:
"Well, we get a special bathroom that is nice. We can be out after curfew to patrol...and yeah," she shrugged. There were some other things she didn't care to mention. "How is your first year going so far? Is it overwhelming or...smooth going? If you ever need anything, please don't hesitate to ask!" She grinned and nodded. This was part of her duties as a prefect, right? She needed to be helpful to the new ones...answer questions, etc. IT WAS EXCITING TO HELP....again, sometimes. |
Quote:
"That sounds really great actually," said Sophie. "I'd love to become a prefect some day. Do you have to have really good grades? Oh and it's going pretty well so far. I've met a few other first years and classes are really interesting." Sophie tugged at a lock of her long blonde hair. "You've been at Hogwarts quite a while," she said. "What are some things I should know about the school? Like any tips or advice?" |
Quote:
Look at this. Aboli was being nice to a first year. Fiona had said Aboli would hex them ... PFFFFT. This one happened to be not annoying, so there was no reason for Aboli to hex her. "Aren't they?" she said about the interesting classes. "I love them. And this is actually only my second year here...I started as a first year, like you, but I...I missed my family too much and left a month in," she sighed. "Biggest mistake of my life. I should have stuck it out...I missed out on adventure, learning with peers, and FRIENDS," she siiiighed and looked back at the younger snakette. "But that doesn't mean I can't give you advice! I would say follow directions from professors...don't loose us points for being rebellious or mouthy. Follow rules, do what's right, and be kind to other Slytherins. We're a family, after all. And we need to stick together. Find friends who really care about you - " her eyes darkened at the thought of Valencia.. "And stick close to them!" |

He looked between the two still unsure if Aboli would even acknowledge his presence so instead he decided to speak to the first year. "I'm Royse. Who are you?" |
Aboli and Royce Quote:

Sophie wondered if something particularly bad had happened for Aboli to go home for so long. She didn't want to be too nosy though so she simply said, "Well, I'm really glad you came back. You seem like a great prefect so far." She smiled encouragingly at Aboli. That was when another Slytherin joined them in the common room. He was a teenage boy, about Aboli's age. Sophie didn't recognize him, but he introduced himself as Royce. "Hello," said Sophie. "I'm Sophie. It's nice to meet you." She wondered if Royce and Aboli knew each other. |

Royse? Aboli kept her facial expression neutral, but she couldn't help nod in his direction. "Well yeah..she's a first year, Royse," she said sarcastically, but barely above a whisper. Had he gotten her birthday present? Not that he knew it was from her. But still, she wondered. |

"I'm a sixth year. If you need help with anything other than Runes or Arithmancy I'll be glad to help. Pretty smart sometimes," he said with a smirk and a slight wink. "Aboli here can help you too. I don't read as fast and things get mixed up sometimes in my head so...probably should just go to her honestly. My forte is more if you want to get into shape or have a workout buddy. I'm up at the crack of dawn." His eyes went to Aboli and he sighed very quietly. He missed having his running buddy. "Anyway, sorry, did I interrupt something?" |
Looking for Friends! Serena walked into the dark and cool common room, definitely a welcome reprieve from the headache that was beginning to build. She hated transferring schools. She hated it when she was eight - when she was forced to move from London to the US with her mom - and she hated it even more now, returning from the US and back to London; leaving all of her friends behind. She thought that she would get used to it all a month after her first day, but she was well into the term now, and she had made zero friends. The fourth year girl plopped down on one of the arm chairs near the fire and pulled a stray blanket to her lap. It was always so cold down here, always so damp - not like her old common room where she could see past the tall trees that hide Ilvermorny. Her eyes strayed to the dark green window and watched as a few fish swam past. Hogwarts was nice and all. But it definitely wasn't home. At least not yet. |
Sitting near Serena Violet had been looking all day for a quiet place to read her letter. Everywhere she'd tried so far had been full of other students and unlikely accidents, so she decided to just head for her common room and hope for a quiet corner. She plopped into an arm chair by the fire without paying much attention to who else was there and began to rummage in her pockets looking for the envelope. |
Yaaaaay! Friends! Quote:
She appeared to be preoccupied with something else, but she wasn't talking to anyone either. It wouldn't be too hard to start up a conversation, would it? 'Talk to her dum-dum!' "Uhm, Hi!" Serena greeted tentatively at the younger girl. "The fire's quite lovely at this side of the common room, isn't it?" |
Quote:
"Hi. Um, yes I guess it is." Violet was not convinced the fire looked any different here than anywhere else, but she let it slide, taking it for the conversational opening that she guessed it was. She looked closer at the blonde girl--she didn't seem to be part of a crowd at Hogwarts, either, maybe this was her chance to make a friend. "My name's Violet P..." oh no, we're starting that nonsense again "er, Violet. Violet Blackthorne. I'm in second year, but I really should be in third. I...I was not at school last year because of...." hmm, how should she put this? "...because of family problems." |
Quote:
"Nice to meet Violet! I'm Serena. Fourth year." She smiled at the girl "You have a lovely name." She then frowned, she had missed school last year?? And she thought she had it bad! "I'm so sorry to hear that. Is your family doing ok now?" She then looked around the common room, as if making sure that there weren't a lot of other Slytherins within hearing distance. It was fortunate that most of their fellow house mates were outdoors, taking advantage of the cool weather. She imagined that this was not a conversation that Violet would appreciate having someone overhear. "If its of any help, I'm sort of, kind of new this year too. Transferred from Ilvermorny when my parents split last year." She admitted with a shrug "It must be difficult, I imagine most of the friends you made last year are third year now, aren't they?" |
Quote:
Violet thought then about what the other girl had said--"Ilvermorny! That must have been interesting--I don't know much about that school. Do you miss your friends back there? You know, it's funny, because I was in America last year when I was away, mostly in New York City." But not among any magical folk who would've known what Ilvermorny was. |
:: Io slipped into the common room from the Girls Dormitories carrying a weathered old purple messenger bag that looked like it was vintage. It was filled with books and parchment, and also a gray sack of chocolate frogs. They were her favorite. Her original plan was to sit at the windows, but the lack of her favorite fuzzy socks altered that. Instead she found an empty chair by the fire. A lot of students were nearby this area, it was the only warm part of the room. Priorities were to form some alliances with her new housemates. Her eccentric Mother did explain that Slytherin house would be full of likeminded students. Could they all really be that cunning and ambitious as her? Well, she would find out. She pulled her gray sack of chocolate frogs and placed them on the dark wooden table to her right. The sack made a thump noise and bounced a bit. The enchanted chocolate making moves. On the bag it had her name 'IO CRAFT-BAKER' embroidered on it in emerald green. She was being subtle about introducing herself to everyone. Her shyness was still quite an issue, but she had her ways around it. She cleared her throat and stated as casually as she could muster, "Please, if anyone would like a frog, go ahead and take one." She started by eating one herself, hoping the others would follow. |
Both to Violet & Io! Quote:
Serena frowned as Violet explained the circumstances of her being left behind a year, and frowned even deeper when she exclaimed what had happened with her 'friends'. Some friends they were! Violet was only a year late, how dare they leave her behind, just like that! At least her friends from the United States still sent her owls once in a while! "I'm sorry to hear that, but clearly, they weren't very good friends for them to leave you in the lurch like that." She answered sincerely, she hoped that Violet wouldn't be too offended, after all, they had only met today, and Serena would hate to offend the girl immediately after meeting her "And besides, I don't think anyone would think that you were left behind because you were poorly doing in class! I saw you at Charms and you mastered that Ascendio charm quite well if I must say so myself!" At the change of topic, Serena smiled. Yes, she loved talking about her school - well her old school at least! "Oh, you would have loved it!" She said with a happy family gracing her face "Its a lot like Hogwarts, kind of. But its hidden on top of a mountain, so the air gets really cool at night, and since the castle itself is so high up, you can see for miles on end!" She sighed wistfully at the thought of the clear blue skies of Massachusetts. She sorely missed everything about it these days, even the weird pukwudgies that patrolled the grounds - although Hogwarts' house elves were kind of growing on her too. "Oh! I used to live in New York with my parents! My mum used to work for MACUSA, so we had to live nearby, and Dad works at potions company that's fronted as a muggle chemical lab." She explained excitedly. She had never had the chance to actually talk to anyone else about her life before Hogwarts, and it was obvious that she was just bursting at the seams to talk about it. "We used to live at a muggle high-rise building, and we had muggle neighbors and everything! So we had to get used to not using a lot of magic, even at home." Quote:
Just as she was about to launch into another enthusiastic monologue about home, a girl younger than both of them walk into the common room with gray bag and position herself on a spot near them. Serena was about to turn back to Violet when said girl - who she assumed was named Io based on the embroidery on the bag - announced that she was giving out frogs. Did she hear that right? Frogs? The girl stared until Io pulled out one from her bag, and she was pleasantly surprised to find that she was talking about chocolate frogs. "Oh chocolate!" She exclaimed in delight. She loooooved chocolate She stood up from her perch by the fire and approached the younger girl "May I?" She asks, gesturing at the bag. |
MACUSA? What was that? And Violet wanted to ask Serena how she did that charm that kept you from crashing back down after Ascendio and ask her more about what she thought of England and assure her that she didn't have bad friends, exactly, it's just that you don't get to know people that well in just one year, and...oh, lots of things, because Violet was a curious person. But suddenly another girl came into the common room and made an announcement. Quote:
Then she noticed the embroidery on the bag--Io Craft-Baker? Had this kid made these frogs herself? They looked a lot better than the ones Violet had managed in potions--her brewing skills were excellent, but she was rubbish at art, so her attempts to mold a frog were rather embarrassing. She got up and walked over to take a better look. "Hey, isn't that your name on the bag? Did you make these yourself? Because if so, they look rather good." |
Quote:
Quote:
"Uh, what are your names?" She asked the other girls. |

SPOILER!!: A lot has happened since I was gone! "Thanks, don't mind if I do." She replied, taking a slightly struggling frog from the bag. If you overthink it, it was kind of morbid you know, animating something edible. It was like giving your chicken a name before cooking it for dinner. Once she had finished her first chocolate, and Violet had taken one for herself. "My name is Serena, 4th year; and as you already know, this girl here is Violet, she's in 2nd year." She wiped of fingers off her handkerchief and held out her hand "Its nice to meet you Io. Why don't you join us over by the fire? I was just telling Violet all about my old school, Ilvermorny." |
:: Io smiled and took the handshake. "Happy to make your aquaintance. Serena and Violet. Ah yes, well the frogs were something my Mother orders for me. I thought others would find them delicious as well. At one time she taught here at the school ages and ages ago." She grabbed her things and made her way to a seat near the fire. "Ilvermorny? What's that like?? She was curious of course. She grew up in one of the smallest wizarding villages and didn't know much about other schools. While she sat and waited, she popped a few more frogs in her mouth. :: |
Violet had left her frog in its wrapper and tucked it into a pocket to save for later; she still intended to read her letter when she got a chance, and she didn't want to get chocolate all over it. But she was also curious about what these girls were saying. She had been in the United States for nearly a year and never heard of a place called Ilvermorny--but of course, the people she'd been with were Muggles. And what was it like to grow up with a mother who had taught at Hogwarts? Violet wondered if the mother had been teaching when Io was growing up...she made a note to ask about that later. |
