CoMC Lesson 2: Yeti

Care of Magical Creatures Lesson 2: Yeti Field Trip

It was a bright and freezing cold February morning, and as promised, Williamson was standing in the usual Creatures classroom promptly at 7 am, already wearing his thickest parka and sipping a hot cup of coffee he'd brought out from breakfast. His bag (one, singular bag) was tightly packed and on the ground beside him. Also scattered on the ground throughout the so-called classroom was an assortment of odd objects: a broom with a broken handle, a stinky old boot, a deflated bike tire, a softly ticking but heavily scratched alarm clock, and a crushed-up ginger ale can.

"Don't touch anything," he warns the students, eying them from behind the rim of his steaming cup as they enter his space. "Hand in your permission slip and then huddle up in groups of four or five." He'd wait for his chaperones to get here before they began.

Any Disabilities/Allergies/Dire Warnings: Don't die or her bodyguard will be upset.

There were so many things that could go wrong. There were portkeys, yetis, and camping, in a combination. Ashley did not like this. She gave no indication of this, however, as she shivered and briefly set her bag down to take a sip of a muggle drink she had gotten her hands on. "Hi," she said to the professor. "Are those the portkeys?" Repeat. She did not like portkeys. Or camping. She would see about the yetis part. She handed the professor her permission slip. She couldn't believe her bodyguards let her father sign it. Especially since they were the ones who would have read it first. But if they said it was okay, then she would probably be alright. She took a couple deep breaths to calm herself as she looked around for whoever would show up next.

Hey Ju 10-22-2020 09:19 PM

The strangest thing about this trip, in Catherine's opinion, was that she was more curious and interested in the fact they were going to Tibet than the fact they would be learning about Yeti. She didn't know an awful lot about the local culture, but the little she knew did spark her curiosity and she wanted to learned more. The fact they'd be in a Yeti Camp was a bonus except it would probably be dangerous given there would be Gryffindors there with them.

Catherine noticed the portkeys way before she arrived and didn't bother asking what they were because, well, she knew. Not only were they travelling internationally in group, it was also stated in their permission slip that that was what they'd be doing. Besides, she could think of no other plausible reason why professor Williamson would have a pile of rubbish in front of him.

As she was one of the first to arrive, she gave the man a head nod as greeting, hading in her permission slip and moving to the side and out of the way. She would wait for groups to start forming and would probably stand near one that was incomplete.

This was going to be SO AWESOME! Cecelia honestly couldn't even BELIEVE she'd convinced her parents to let her go. It had helped that Noah and Catherine were going. It also helped that she'd drawn out her own little illustrated presentation explaining WHY this trip was the best thing to ever happen to her. EXPLORATION, FAR OFF LAND, CREATURE DISCOVERY. It was all very important stuff, you know, and it had worked!

She was all smiles as she joined the small group already in attendance, wearing her warmest winter clothing and carrying her backpack she used whenever she went camping. It felt as close to an explorer's backpack as she could get. "Hi Professor! You look cozy!" Did she look ready for adventure? Because she WAS! OH- "Here's my permission slip!"

Field trip! Naya was pumped. It was time for her favorite class and they were going on a field trip. What more could she ask for? The Gryffindor arrived for class and could barely contain her excitement. “Hello Professor”, she said with a little too much enthusiasm. Handing in her permission slip, Naya noticed the dreaded portkeys. If there was one thing that could burst her bubble of excitement, it was traveling by portkey.

She was prepared however, for the almost sure to happen motion sickness. Naya had her ginger candies in her pocket and she was not afraid to use them. This was going to a fun trip no matter what.

Finneas Schmoe, reporting for duty!

Why was he always asked to help chaperone? Maybe it's because he was always SUPREMELY prepared for whatever exhibition they were bound to partake in. Case and point: the yeti-sized backpack he wore on his back. Finneas knew he was a wizard and could use an extension charm, but he was the muggle studies professor, y'know? It'd look bad if he didn't opt for the muggle way of doing things. So here he was, heavy backpack filled to the brim with everything one could possibly need: sunscreen, snacks, extra scarves, band aids, first aid supplies, epi-pens, shock blanket, extension cords, mum's best carrot soup, and binoculars!

He looked proper ready to explore.

"My permission slip, Professor," he held that out dutifully before turning around and giving all the currently present students a grand Schmoe-style salute!

A field trip and a CoMC lesson!

Claudine couldn’t be happier. It would be a nice change to get out of the Castle and as long as Trent wasn’t coming along, this trip would be perfect. Bundled snugly in warm clothing, she arrived at the gathering point of the group. “Hi, professor,’’ she said in a muffled tone since her scarf was obscuring her mouth. But behind it, the girl was beaming. Did Williamson know he was the coolest professor ever? Maybe he did, maybe he didn’t. Either way, Claudine wasn’t about to tell him that. Instead, she glanced around at the objects that were obviously portkeys as she handed over the permission slip. “I’m looking forward to today's lesson more than usual.’’ Just a fun fact there. All the necessary jazz out of the way, Claudine went to stand silently beside Naya.

Oh, there was Schmoe. Hi, professor.

Field trip day! Sure, it may have been terribly cold and terribly early, but Mamie was chipper as a squirrel and was about as prepared for this trip as a squirrel was for winter. Bundled up with her eyes barely showing between her scarf and her hat, she had gathered her regular Muggle backpacking/camping gear from when her family went camping. Though...she had never gone camping in the winter, or in a Yeti camp, so this was new.

Clutching her permission slip tightly in her gloved hands, she handed it to Professor Williamson and went to stand by her friend Ashley and two older students. "Thi-thi-this is so exciting!" she enthused. She was sure her brothers had never gotten to go on a camping field trip for school.

Despite the dangers, Heath was excited to go on this field trip! He knew he could trust Profesor Williamson not to let him die - not that he’d likely find himself in that situation anyway. He wasn’t one to disregard a professor’s instructions. But most importantly, yetis looked a lot like wampas, making them the closest he’d ever come to seeing a Star Wars creature! In fact, he wondered if the wampa was based on a yeti. He knew that it wasn’t unheard of for muggles to encounter a yeti, so maybe someone on the Empire Strikes Back creative team had seen one and drawn on that experience for the movie. Asdfjkl!!! He needed to know!

He shook his head, realizing how weird his thoughts were. Never mind, no time to think about that now. Dark eyes peered over the top of his scarf as he approached the Creatures classroom. Oh, Professor Schmoe was coming along? Good, the more trustworthy professors on this trip, the better! “Hello, Professors,” Heath greeted, handing in his permission slip to Williamson. He was glad for the scarf covering the bottom half of his face so no one would see the blush on his cheeks. Why did his mum have to include that bit of information on the last line? No one was ever supposed to know that about him! Merlin, he hoped Williamson would keep that to himself!

With that done, Heath went to stand with Claudine and Naya. “Hi,” he greeted, nodding to both girls in turn.

This was Serena's first class that involved getting out of the school, and she really didn't know what to expect from it. On one hand, she was excited to see Tibet as she had never been, but on the other hand, she really did not want a repeat of what happened during her Defense Against the Dark Arts class. She wanted to keep all her limbs intact, thank you very much.

"Good Morning Professor." The 14-year old greeted with a small smile was she walked up to him and she handed him her permission slip. "Here's my permission slip, Sir."

After handing the signed piece of parchment to Professor Williamson, she looked up, surprised to see muggle studies Professor, Professor Schmoe was also in attendance. Maybe he was chaperoning the field trip? "Good Morning to you too Professor." She greeted with the same small smile before turning away to find a group of students that she could group together with. After all, there was safety in numbers.

June did not have a permission slip, and she had not been worrying about this thing until she saw Schmoe handing a slip to Professor Williamson. WHY. Feeling fourteen and unsure, the herbology professor made her way over to the two, looking doubtful and somewhat amused, "Will I not be allowed to go if I didn't have this slip on me, sir?"

Why are you the way you are, Schmoe?

"I REALLY want to go though, so please reconsider" Though her tone was a bit playful, she was low-key hoping she wouldn't have to OWL Jade the very last minute. She really really wanted to see a YETI, you see.

Josh may not YET be able to face his pops about his future in quidditch and what the sixth year really wanted to do...but those in the know ought to at least throw him part of a bone for putting his foot down when it came to this field trip. And THAT had taken a lot of effort. Pops had seen this overnight 'yeti hunt' as a complete waste of time and nothing more than something that would put Josh's training on hold. Something apparently he could not afford to do. The Gryffindor wasn't sure how he had done it, maybe her had filibustered his way to the conclusion, but a deal had been struck and he had the permission slip triumphantly in hand.

Or it HAD been in hand because he had turned it in and then blushed when he saw Professor Flamsteed was a chaperon on this trip. And now he was second guessing his wardrobe...namely what Eliza may have slipped in there to embarrass and tease him. He would not put it past her to do something and laugh about imagining what his face looked like when he discovered ... whatever it was.

Anyway. Just...not...yeah...no...thinking about something else.

Blushing a bit more at his own thoughts, Josh ruffled his hair and came to a stop beside a younger Slytherin girl. Looking around a bit, he spotted Phoebe and waved at her. Or waved her down? Group up? He also spotted his little Herbology buddy, Mamie, that he was feeling pretty protective of BUT...she seemed well taken care of and in a group of four already. "You wanna group up?" he asked the girl near him as he pulled his hand from his hair. "I'm Josh."

Field trips were always exciting, but she was even more excited to be going with Professor Williamson. "Good morning, Professor," Avalon said with a wave as she handed in her permission slip. Her Head of House got a wave hello as well. Eyeing the mangy looking objects on the floor, she hypothesized that those were the portkeys. Hopefully she wouldn't have to touch the boot one - it was emitting a putrid odor. We're on WWW's team. No protests, sir

"It's toooooo early."

Emmerson rubbed miserably at her eyes as she came to a stop among the groups of students. It was 7. Breakfast was usually at 7 but today it was earlier which meant she had to wake up earlier and when you don't go to bed until ungodly hours because you HAVE to discuss EVERY LITTLE DETAIL OF EVERYTHING with your bestfriend at night, it was impossible to go to bed early.

Violet could not believe her grandfather had relented and signed the permission slip. He had been very clear about her being restricted to campus for the entire year, no trips to Hogsmeade, no nothing. But he must have realized that this would affect her grade and agreed to it at last. He'd signed it, all right, but not without adding a nasty, threatening note at the end. Violet hoped that would not make Professor Williamson mad, but it probably would. She quickly handed it in and then stepped back and tried to blend in with the crowd of students already there.

SPOILER!!: permission slip

"I'm Josh."

'Wanna group up?'

Startled, Serena followed the sound of the voice who had introduced himself and was surprised to find a much older Gryffindor boy in front of her. This was new, usually she attracted first years and second years like moths to a candle light, but this was the first time she had actually spoken to an older student.

"Oh, uh Sure. That would be great actually!" She said unsurely, her hand rising to a lame wave Honestly, this is why she didn't have any friends"Nice to meet you Josh, I'm Serena" She smiled at him. "What year are you in?"

There were indeed so many things that could go wrong on a school trip, especially one to see a creature rated XXXXX. But yes, "Those are portkeys, and you shouldn't touch them yet," he stated calmly, taking the permission slip with his free hand and giving it a look-see while he sipped his coffee.

What? What was this? "Some kind of joke, here, Fox?" Williamson raised his eyebrows at the girl. "You have bodyguards?" They weren't going on this trip. Hogwarts might have come into some money recently but it wasn't rich enough to afford to send bodyguards on trips. Also, the don't die warning was for her, right? No one cared if HE died or not.

So here he was, heavy backpack filled to the brim with everything one could possibly need: sunscreen, snacks, extra scarves, band aids, first aid supplies, epi-pens, shock blanket, extension cords, mum's best carrot soup, and binoculars!

But listen, you can't undermine your appearance as an authority figure by doing these things like filling out permission slips that are destined for the children."

As much as he appreciated it, and now knew the name of Schmoe's (presumably old) mother, he had asked Schmoe on this trip to teach him things like this. "Don't worry.

"I'm Josh."

If Williamson had known Mr. Miller's father's thoughts on his field trip, and his subject, he woulda given him a FEW choice words and would have MAYBE illustrated those words with some COLORFUL HAND GESTURES....!

But, as it were, Williamson merely stifled a yawn and took Josh's permission slip in hand. His dad seemed strict, huh. "Thanks, Miller." And he added it to his stack.

She had been thoroughly enjoying CoMC this term, and....well, any class that didn't involve Headmaster Trent was quickly becoming her new favorite.

"Good morning, Avalon," Williamson greeted the Prefect. She would be a good one to have on hand, right? Good thing some student leaders still took his class, especially ones with no drama on their permission slips.

Mmmmmm okay, this wasn't going to fly. "I can't watch you go to the bathroom," he stated, pointing to the warnings line on the girl's form. "So you can tell your grandpops to---" Er, well, never mind, it was a bit late for that. Williamson frowned deeply but added the Slytherin's slip to the stack.

Right, anyone else? Williamson downed the last bit of his coffee and glanced around, then wiped his mouth on the back of his hand.

"Okay, so we have a few minutes before the portkeys activate. Time for a question to get your brains fired up then. Tell me, what did you bring with you to prepare to camp and observe a yeti and other high-altitude creatures? And why did you bring these things?"

He nodded to Finneas and June to start inspecting the bags. "We uh, are going to make sure you packed properly, while you answer the question...." Also, had to make sure no one was sneaking any contraband in. He headed to the first student to search their bag.

Was she late? Were women ever really late? No, of course not they just needed some extra time and honestly if she was going to be going on a field trip she had to come prepared. A witch was always prepared even if her small bag didn't look like she was. If you looked into that charmed bag you might find her entire office in there.

Anyway, Cassie headed straight for the students hearing William saying about checking there bags. "Hello, hello, I will get right to it. Please let me see your bag." Grinning towards a student (Violet) and reached for her bag. "Exciting isn't it?"

Thought she shouldn't be talking when William just asked a question, now should she.

Was Carsyn feeling especially cranky this morning? Definitely and it had absolutely NOTHING to do with the 7am weekend arrival to care of magical creatures, because she was normally awake early in the morning anyway. Thank you quidditch routines. So why was the Gryffindor Prefect in a mood then, you ask? Because she was seventeen years old and would be eighteen in two months, yet was still required to hand in a stupid parental permission form. She was old enough to drop out of Hogwarts but wasn't old enough to go on a field trip without contacting her parents first??? Yet if she wanted to drop out of Hogwarts, she doubted she needed their permission. Albeit she had no idea but considering she knew at least four kids in her year who dropped out, two of whom got married which was cray-cray but that was a different story, they didn't all have parental consent, right??

Silently giving Professor Williamson a stink-eye when she handed him her form, she stood at the object furthest from him to wait. If they were traveling by portkey - as it appeared - there was no way she wanted to go by portkey with the professor who apparently still considered her a child. Even if she was acting like a child right now.

"Snacks. A girl's gotta eat" because even though she was an adult, she was a growing girl and athlete. "Oh and warm clothes because well yetis like much colder climates than Scotland." She did pay attention. See, there was really no reason for her to have contacted her parents about this trip. Even though her sister probably would have told them anyway.

Serena stood beside her new partner Josh as she watched the professors began the inspection of their bags. As they did so, Professor Williamson asked them what they packed for the trip "Warm clothes. Lots and lots of warm clothes" She said simply with a shrug. If they were going looking for yetis, then it was probably somewhere freezing. "And a pair of omnioculars. To better find them" She added.

She watched closely at the ongoing inspection, her hand gripping her bag tightly. She had also packed a music box in the bag, but instead of classical music, she had charmed it to play a muggle nursery rhyme about the Abominable Snowman. The yetis would probably not understand a word of it, but she would, and it would be gloriously hilarious for her.

Cole was excited for a field trip to see a yeti but not about the freezing cold. He was bundled up from head to toe with so much clothing that he probably looked like a stuffed turkey. With his bag packed with everything required on the list along with a few other must haves that his dad had sent along like a magically warmed sleeping bag Cole was ready to get away from Hogwarts for a few hours. "Hello professor Williamson!" Cole chirped excitedly as he handed over his signed permission slip before he went over to stand with his girlfriend Naya and his friends; Heath, Avalon and Claudine.

Raising his hand up quickly Cole answered confidently with a look over at Professor Williamson. "I've got my dad’s magical binoculars for looking at yeti’s from a safe distance and a warm sleeping bag for camping and some sandwiches and hot coco in case i get hungry before we get back to school." And well a stuffed zouwu that he never slept without and some other small things that he just had wanted to bring along on this field trip. It was nice that Professor Cassie and Professor Schome were coming along to see yetis too and maybe professor June too.

CruppieMom89 10-24-2020 12:11 PM

Ahh! We need a group!

Ivy ran up just class was starting, a huge (maybe too big) bag strapped across her back. Her breath came out in huge puffs of white air as she gasped to catch her breath. It was a long run from the castle to here. ”Good morning, Professor Williamson!” she said cheerfully, absolutely not a single hint of tears or melancholy. She handed him her permission slip then looked around to see who still had room in her group.

Before she’d picked one, though, Professor Williamson was asking about their packing. Taking off her pack, she dropped it to the ground with a loud thud and some clanging. ”I packed several sets of several layers of warm clothes. I brought some stuff to cook in over the fire so we can have hot meals and drinks. Speaking of which - grabbed some tea, lots of food for hot meals like stew ingredients and stuff snd oatmeal. Also baked some granola bars and brought those. It’s really important to have plenty to eat when you’re going to be in the cold because your body burns up extra calories trying to keep you warm,” she explained. This is what you learned in muggle Girl Scouts when you grew up in the coldest parts of the U.S.

”Oh and I also brought a tent because we need protection from the winds, a sleeping bag with an extra blanket, a bed roll so I’m not sleeping right on the ground...” It was a really long list. Her bag was very heavy...

astrocat 10-24-2020 12:33 PM

"I brought food and water, for obvious reasons. Also, I brought normal camping stuff like first aid and a muggle heat blanket. And a regular blanket and a sleeping bag. And warm clothes. And some other case-specific stuff. And my stuffed fox. And my favorite book." The stuffed fox would maybe not be necessary, but it helped her sleep, and sleep was necessary. She hoped they would let her bring it. She looked up and down at the group she had. Mamie, Cecilia(Cece? Ashley wasn't quite sure what her name was but she was nice), and Catherine. Not bad. In fact it was good. She grinned at them. "We can be in group together? Cool." She was very confused as to why someone was calling her small (she was over 5 feet tall) but she didn't mind at all. She jumped up and down coldly but excitedly as she waited for the trip to start. The interest of this trip had begun to overcome her fears about dying.

FearlessLeader19 10-24-2020 05:38 PM

No sign of Trent and Claudine was thrilled about this fact. Pretty soon her group became a group of five. “Hi, Cole, Avalon.’’ The girl gave them both a smile before her excited gaze turned to Heath. “Hi, you,’’ she greeted with a tilt of her head. “I hoped you wouldn’t oversleep.’’ She did know he had trouble sleeping at times and had hoped he hadn’t been kept up all night.

Oh.

Their bags were getting searched? Interesting. The fourth year removed hers from over her shoulders then unzipped it for whichever Professor got to the group. “I’ve got snacks, water and omnioculars.’’ There were other stuff like her sketchpad, crayons, pencils, a blanket, and a jacket among the lot.

Daydreamer11 10-24-2020 06:14 PM

Naya was getting even more excited as more of her classmates arrived. She was a little surprised that Claudine came and stood next to her. It was no secret that the younger girl seemed to despise Naya. With a somewhat curious look, she nodded at the Slytherin in an acknowledging greeting. Soon, Heath joined them, followed by Avalon. Naya gave a cheerful “hello” to both of them as they arrived. Finally, as she had hoped, Cole made them a group of five. Cue the special smile for the boyfriend only.

Now though, it was time for a question. Professor Williamson wanted to know what they had packed for the trip. ”I brought lots and lots of layers. You never know how cold or warm you might be, so it’s best to have options.” Naya had brought her special backpack that was filled with lots of stuff. “I’ve got my warm sleeping bag, binoculars, snacks oh and my hiking boots.” Naya also had her “marathon blanket”, those foil blankets that they give to marathon runners at the end of a race. She was from Florida and......a girl has to stay warm.

DaniDiNardo 10-24-2020 09:15 PM

You will find....absolutely nothing in this bag

Emm was still fighting the sleep from her eyes when she felt the man take his hand away. Even worse, he was asking questions. The little girl tried to slump against him--y'know, so she could catch a few more winks--but before she could, he was already gone inspecting bags.

Bags?

What did they pack?

"Wait." Emmerson rubbed at her eyes again, wincing just a little at how sore they were beginning to get. "Wait." She said again, though whether it was because she was still formulating words or because she'd forgotten she already said it was unclear.

The First Year looked around at the other professors present, all trying to check bags. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she remembered she too was wearing a bag, one she'd simply scooped up off the ground by her bed and headed down with half asleep.

"We were meant to pack? Proooooffeessssssssoooorrrrrr." Emm whined, growing quite miserable now. The 11 year old extended her bag for anyone to look. Empty. Very empty. There was nothing on the inside.

Waddles 10-24-2020 09:58 PM

Awww yeah, early morning question time. Mamie unbuckled her bag to make it easier to be inspected. "I packed warm clothes and a sleeping bag, because Yetis have fur but I don't!" she said. "And binoculars to see things far away. And a whistle in case I get lost!" She held up the whistle that was hanging around her neck. They were lucky she didn't demonstrate...even Mamie thought it was too early for whistles. Safety first in the Turov family. Safety first, then fun, then education third.

ArianaBlack 10-24-2020 10:16 PM

some light mentions sprinkled throughout

Finneas found himself blushing a good bit in response to both his former professor and his former school mate, both turned current colleagues. It did help that Professor Williamson seemed to be blushing too. They could be the blushing bunch. Name a better duo….

”Heh,” Finneas found himself twitching about nervously. ”It was, er, all in good fun,” he had JOKES, see? Though… Maybe it did undermine his authority. He could see that perspective too. Perhaps that’s why his class turned into total anarchy? One couldn’t ever be too sure. Anyway, ANYWAY, aNyWaY.

It was time to meander around the room and find a nice spot to stand in. A spot that was immediately occupied by another little body. Errrrrrr…. Finneas looked over at Ms. James. Grouping up with a young Gryffindor child, what could possibly go wrong? Everything. ”Err… Sounds excellent, Ms. James.” Sort of.

As for checking students’ bags… It did feel a little bit like an invasion of privacy, did it not? Made Schmoey a lil uncomfy, but he didn’t want to undermine his authority again, so he did get to checking. Cole’s stuffed zouwu was …. an interesting thing to take on a field trip, but who was Finneas to judge? He was also very surprised to find Emmerson’s bag entirely empty… She did know this was a weekend trip, right?

Because er, she hardly seemed the type to travel lightly. Fortunately, this class was not Schmoe territory. He’d let Williamson break it to her. AnYwAy. He was certain that Serena’s music box wouldn’t cause any yeti any harm, so er, he stepped aside quickly after checking her bag to move to the next.

Cassirin 10-25-2020 12:51 AM

Phoebe followed Schmoe as he went about searching bags, peering over his shoulder with determined interest. He was her group, okay? This is okay, because they were a GROUP. She hmmmed in interest over stuffed animals and music boxes, although Schmoe didn't seem bothered, so OKAY, moving on.

As for her...? "My bag has warm clothes and those shoes with the little climbing spikes on them? And a sleeping bag. And a hair brush. Trust me." She clutched her bag against her as she followed ol' Schmoe. Invasion of privacy much? Like fine that she was looking in the bags of people who volunteered it, but she had UNDERWEAR in hers, OKAY?

MadMadamMalfoy 10-25-2020 01:11 AM

idk if books are contraband, but he has one xD

Heath returned Professor Williamson’s nod with a look of gratitude, thankful that he hadn’t said anything about that particular detail of his permission slip. He said, “Hi” to Avalon and Cole as they joined the group and returned Claudine’s greeting with a smile. He understood the meaning behind her words; she was the only person here other than Williamson who knew the secret that permission slip contained. “Of course not! I wouldn’t miss this for the world,” he replied. Truth be told, he had had trouble sleeping last night, but it came from excitement, not fear.

Wait, they had to have their bags searched? That was… unexpected, but Heath wasn’t too worried about it. There was nothing unusual to find in his bag, unless books were somehow considered contraband on this trip. He’d packed the novelization of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back along with his food, clothes, sleeping bag, and other essentials for a bit of reading before bed. Reading helped him get to sleep, and when he wasn’t observing yetis, he might as well be reading about wampas (and other Star Wars creatures)! While he awaited his turn to get his bag checked, he noticed Cole’s zouwu but said nothing about it. He could relate; he had a stuffed horse that he used to sleep with himself. Maybe he’d tell him about it later if anyone teased him about the zouwu…

For now, Heath focused on Professor Williamson’s question. Most of the things he had packed were already covered, except for his book and one other thing. “Besides the food, warm clothes, sleeping bag, and binoculars that others have mentioned, I also brought a first aid kit with, among other things, bandages, ointments, and potions for nausea and high altitude sickness.” Both of which could come in handy on a portkey trip to the region with the highest elevation in the world! “You never know what might happen on a camping trip, so it’s good to be prepared for any illness or injury, just in case.” He was the son of a healer, remember? What other answer would he give?

Fireheart 10-25-2020 02:54 AM

They were having their bags searched? That seemed like a slight intrusion of privacy. Not that Avalon had anything suspicious in her bag, which had been charmed with an extension spell to provide some more room. In it, she had the normal things: warm clothes, socks, an extra pair of boots, and the like. She had also brought a book to read, her sketchbook, and an extra blanket - among a few other things. Basically, she was prepared for it to be super cold.

"I brought some matches, just in case I can't access my wand and need to light a fire. Yeti's don't like flames," Avalon said. So if she found herself being chased by a wild Yeti, perhaps she could fish around in her massive bag, miraculously find and strike a match, and throw it behind her. Yeah right. At least she felt prepared.

Violet flushed deeply at Professor Williamson's words and saw his scowl deepen. She knew her grandfather's note on her slip would make trouble--Merlin, it wasn't her idea for him to talk like that to everyone. Her family was worried she would run away again, but they didn't need to--she never wanted to see her father again, and she didn't really have anyone or anywhere to run off to, even if she'd wanted.

Violet had barely had time to reflect on this when a teacher was reaching for her bag and Professor Williamson was asking a question--this was too much, too soon so early in the morning. Well, they could look in her bag--since she hadn't been sure what to bring, she wasn't sure if she had contraband, but she guessed she'd find out soon enough:
SPOILER!!: Violet's bag

tent
sleeping bag
bowl, cup, utensils
soap
towel
water bottle
socks and underwear
extra shirt
rain-gear
toothbrush
first-aid kit
sunscreen potion
insect repelling potion
small notebook and pencil

She was wearing her hiking shoes and socks, sweater, parka, scarf, hat, and gloves, and she hoped that was everything. She raised her hand, because she figured she might as well answer the question. Hopefully the professor didn't have it in for her now. "I packed a tent and sleeping bag and some extra socks and shirt and raingear."

mellamaet 10-25-2020 05:29 AM

Ok, at least the music box apparently isn't contraband. She was looking forward to playing it at the maximum volume magically possible once they get to Tibet and possibly offend a handful of Yetis.

Serena watched as everyone else's bags were searched, and she was steadily regretting her choices in packing light. Why didn't she think of bringing a sleeping bag? Or a magical tent! She supposed she could always charm a patch of ground to be warm and soft, but the thought of that was just absolutely depressing. But she assumed that the school would be providing accommodation - so she guessed wrong.

A Ravenclaw Prefect (Avalon) near her had brought matches! why didn't she think to bring matches?! "I wish I thought to bring matches" She admitted a bit gloomily.

TakemetotheBurrow 10-25-2020 10:39 PM

Whaaat did Cecelia pack in her bag, you ask? Well, she'd packed way more than she could ever possibly need, that was sure. She'd also packed way more random items than were probably appropriate for such a trip, but magic helped keep her bag light as a feather, so she saw NO harm in having all the comforts of home. Like a framed picture of her family and her stuffed doggo that made little woof-ing sounds if you pressed on its paw. She decided not to share certain items out loud with the class, though. "I've got a sleeping bag, lots of warm clothes, extra extra socks because I really hate when my toes are cold, also my toothbrush and a hairbrush and some loo paper because you never know, you know?" She also obviously had her wand safely tucked away because that item was super duper important if she was going to come face-to-face with a yeti! She trusted Coop had packed his camera, so she didn't bother with one of those, but that would've made the list TOO if it wasn't for him.

sweetpinkpixie 10-26-2020 01:30 PM

"Hiya, Serena," he smiled in return and, as it always did, his thick Boston accent telling its own unspoken story during said introduction. "I'm a sixth year but I've only been here si---"

Op. That would be the voice of Professor Williamson.

His attention swerving to the man himself, he and Serena could have a chat at another time, and found himself relieved that this question was an EASY one. He really wasn't so sure about having his bag searched, however. Even if he understood the why...he knew that HE hadn't put anything in there that shouldn't be. He knew he didn't have any food or anything that would make noise. Well....save for a harmonica that he had brought as entertainment around the campfire since he was impractical to bring his guitar. "I brought my Omnioculars," he offered after a bit. Along with the obvious warm clothing and his wand and all those essentials. "Sure...they are meant for quidditch but they also ought to come in handy while looking at yeti from a safe and respectable distance."

Ah, there was his last chaperone! "Right on time," he greeted Cassie with a warm smile. Plus she was already helping with the bags, so he couldn't fault her for running a bit late.

So much for prefects setting a good example for younger kids, huh? Williamson caught that stink-eye and noticed that Carsyn Rose apparently became a bit thorny (all puns intended) when forced to comply with school rules. Interesting, if not a bit predictable for Gryffindors.

"Snacks, clothes, good..." he rifled through her bag, finding those items, and stopping short when he pulled out a large dungbomb. "Really, Rose?" Williamson tsked and stuffed it into one of his own pockets. "Yeti don't like the smell of human excrement, trust me on that one." And no, she wouldn't be getting this back when they got to Tibet.

"Omnioculars, smart," Wililamson nodded his approval to Serena's answer, as he was already searching someone else's bag. Slytherins knew better than to pack contraband that would get them all killed though, surely.

"Great!" Williamson smiled gently at Cole as he went through a Hufflepuff bag. "I hope you brought your wand too?" Of course, he didn't need to remind seventh years of this....

"Wow," he raised his eyebrow at the excited, well-stocked Hufflepuff, who was living up to all the best stereotypes of her House right now. "That's quite a list, but remember that we will have food there." Chuckle chuckle. He began looking through her stuffed pack. "Anyway, glad you're prepared. That's the first step to traveling anywhere." And he gently handed her back her bag, having approved it for the trip.

For obvious reasons.... Williamson's mouth twitched into a bit of a smile at that answer. He quickly searched her bag and found nothing amiss, murmuring, "Good, you seem prepared," as he moved on to the next student.

Williamson searched Claudine's bag as she spoke. "And why did you bring these things?" he questioned mildly, noting her sketchpad and drawing materials. Well those could be handy, for field notes.

Right, it was winter, so... "Nice blanket," Williamson nodded to her marathon blanket. "Sounds like you are prepared." And her bag was ready, so.

While some people may have questioned the professors going through bags, others would understand that it was because of students like Emmerson Cambridge that they HAD to search the bags. Because some bags were... empty? He saw Schmoe going through this and put a hand to his temples to stop the headache that was forming there already.

"Emmerson, you KNEW you were going away for the weekend. I suppose you plan to wear this same outfit the whole time?" He shook his head at her in disappointment. "We have sleeping bags and food at the campsite, but it looks like... you may be in for a rough time. And no, there's no time for you to run up to the castle and make it back here before the portkeys go off.

They had old sweatshirts and the like she could borrow at the campsite, but the LACK of RESPONSIBILITY in this one... smh.

"And binoculars to see things far away. And a whistle in case I get lost!" She held up the whistle that was hanging around her neck. They were lucky she didn't demonstrate...even Mamie thought it was too early for whistles. Safety first in the Turov family. Safety first, then fun, then education third.

Honestly, some first years were just more responsible than others. Williamson inspected Mamie's bag with a satisfied grunt. "Good ideas, Mamie." GOOD JOB to THIS one. Hufflepuffs knew how to pack.

SPOILER!!: Finneas

Jokes.... right. Jokes could absolutely undermine someone's authority, but that went without saying, didn't it? Williamson just shook his head at Finneas and went the opposite direction of him to check on the last few bags.

How fortunate for Finneas to have such a helpful stalker student trailing along after him. Williamson was amused by Ms. James. "Good, those shoes will come in handy on our long hikes," he nodded to her. He'd let... er, Finneas inspect that bag though. James seemed to be clinging to it like it was a life raft.

SPOILER!!: Heath

No, books were not contraband here. He finished inspecting Heath's bag and handed it back to him without comment. "That's correct. Thanks for thinking of first aid." They did have that at the campsite, but it was also smart to have a smaller pack on one's person when hiking around or whatnot.

Ah, a smartly packed bag with some spellwork on it. "Nice." Williamson murmured his approval as he glanced through it. "And your point brings me to our next activity... but good, matches are a necessity in case you lose your wand or something." Even Muggles could appreciate the value of matches.

"Well that's good," Williamson replied to Violet, nodding to Cassie as she went through her bag, "but you won't need the tent, as the campsite already has those set up." He nodded to the Divination professor to pull it out and set it off to the side. And hopefully her waterproof rain gear would work for snow as well.

The stuffed dog was terribly cute, not that Williamson would EVER say so. He nodded at Cece's bag (it seemed well-packed and surprisingly light) and handed it back to her. "I do know. Loo paper is an essential, I think." He smiled to her and moved on to the last bag.

Miller... "Nice omnioculars." Hogwarts certainly had some wealthy students, that was for sure. He spent a moment inspecting the glasses and handed them, and the bag, back to Josh. Nothing suspicious in there, really.

And the last bag meant that it was truly time to get on their way. "Alright then, grab your things, grab a friend's hand, and then grab onto one of the portkeys around here. We've got a broom with a broken handle, an old boot, a bicycle tire, an alarm clock, and a ginger ale can." He deposited the objects by the groupings of students at random.

"Once you get to the campsite, you'll see two tents: one for boys, and one for girls. They're marked, so ONLY go into the appropriate tent and pick out a bunk. Then we'll gather together to learn a spell to help you stay warm, alright?"

He nodded and glanced at his wristwatch, watching the seconds tick down until the portkeys began to glow. "OKAY, GRAB ON!" He himself clutched at the ginger ale can he'd drank last night, gritting his teeth in preparation for the nauseating sensation of travel via this method.

CruppieMom89 10-26-2020 09:41 PM

We broke our nose...?

When Professor Williamson inspected her bag, she thought he’d be proud of how prepared she was, but as he explained that almost everything she’d thought to pack, all the food she’d carefully taken the time to pack and prep, was not needed, she felt a little crestfallen. Then he began saying there’d already be tents there... with bunk beds. They’d probably be heated too since they were, ya know, MAGIC, which Ivy had clearly completely forgotten was a thing when she’d prepared for their trip.

And to top it off, no one had offered to have her in their group. They probably all thought she was a coward since she hadn’t been in the Forbidden Forest with them. It didn’t matter that she’d been busy trying to save their LIVES.

Uuuuugh... she really did kind of hate Hogwarts...

Looking around at all the random objects Professor Williamson mentioned, Ivy was super confused. What on Earth was a portkey? But, ever one to follow directions, she put her hand on the bicycle tire and waited just a few seconds before the strangest thing so far happened to her.

She felt like a stuffed animal in a particularly violent crane game - one where some mean boy was flinging her around TRYING to get her fall off the crane but she just wouldn’t do it. Then without warning, there was the ground, and she was crashing into it, falling face first into the snow with her heavy backpack crushing her further into the wet powder.

Her nose might have been broken, but she couldn’t tell because it was so cold...

Part of her wanted to get up before her face froze, but she was also afraid if she moved she was going to throw up. Very slowly, gingerly she pulled herself into a sitting position and saw a few drops of blood in the snow from her nose. Not wanting to give anyone another reason to think she was a BABY, though, she wiped the blood from her nose on her sleeve OUCH! and got to her feet. She began making her way toward the tents, leaving a trail of little blood drops in the snow every several steps. Getting to the girls tent, she stashed her bag on a lower bunk near the door and dug through her pack until she found the small pack of tissues she’d brought. Pulling one out, she held it to her clearly broken nose to try to stop the bleeding while her eyes watered making it look like she was crying which she definitely was NOT doing.

astrocat 10-26-2020 10:05 PM

Ashley was proud that she packed good. She nodded at her group, which was the tire group, and grabbed the portkey. When she landed, she felt very dizzy. "Whyyy is this... like this? It's ridiculous. Portkeys are the worst." She felt over for a while and slowly rose just in time to see Ivy go into the tent. She followed and set her bag down. Only then did she notice the girl's nose. That would explain the trail of blood. "That is broken. You should get that fixed. Because this is magic and they can do that here apparently." She took out her stuffed fox and set it on her top bunk(the best kind) to claim it. If anyone dared to take it, they would regret that decision. As if Ashley wouldn't keep an eye on one of her favorite things. "There is a charm to fix that. The professors probably know it. You should ask them. Healer Recard fixed my nose in like five seconds, so I'm sure it will be ok. I hope." She pointed in the direction of the nearest professor concernedly. She hated seeing her friends hurt. She nervously turned away to see if any of her portkey buddies had gone near her. Because she and Ivy were close to each other and it would be lame if everyone was spread out randomly.

FearlessLeader19 10-26-2020 10:34 PM

Claudine arched an eyebrow at Williamson. Honestly, was probably the professor aside from Fuller-Thompson who knew her best. He should know that she never went anywhere without her sketchpad. “For sketches,’’ she told him simply and honestly. She wouldn’t miss a chance to sketch such an important memory. Plus, this was the sketchpad Heath had given her for her last birthday; there’s no way she’d leave it behind.

Grab a friend’s hand? Um… no. Claudine wouldn’t mind taking Heath’s hand but they were in class not out on a date. And no one else was allowed to invade her personal space. She moved forward to the nearest Portkey, eyeing Heath. He’d grab the same one, yeah? It didn’t matter if he did. Everyone would end up at the same destination.

And soon they were off.

The fourth year was all too prepared for the usual unpleasant feeling. She just kept her eyes shut and hoped it would all be over soon. Her hope came through and soon she felt her feet slam into the ground. The impact made her legs buckle and she went crumbling to the ground in a heap. At least she was in better shape than Ivy over there. Claudine took a few deep breaths then climbed to her feet. Aside from being winded, she was okay. Once she was sure Heath was there safely, the Slytherin trudged off to the girls’ tent; marked a bunk as hers by depositing her bag on it then wandered back outside.

Well, Violet was pretty pleased with herself at her packing--she was not a list-maker for nothing. So, they already had tents, huh? And--did they say they had beds? That was pretty posh camping. She'd planned to put her rain gear under her bag to stay dry, but maybe she wouldn't need it now. Although you never knew when you might need rain-gear.

Oh dear Merlin, they were leaving already? Violet put her had out and grabbed the nearest Portkey--just her luck, an alarm clock, her least favorite thing in the world! At the same time, she reached out her other hand blindly, hoping to grab someone else's hand for the journey.

Portkeys weren't so bad once you got used to the feeling of being tugged into the great abyss by your belly button. That's what it'd always felt like to her, anyway. She quickly tightened the straps of her backpack, grabbed the hand nearest hers, and did the same to the nearest portkey. Then she was being pulled into nothingness, only to arrive at their destination just as quickly, a little wobbly but otherwise A-okay. Much better than that younger girl with a bleeding nose, luckily. Some kids still had to learn how to stick the landing.

Hurrying into the appropriate tent, Cecelia claimed herself a bunk tucked towards the back and dropped her bag unceremoniously on the bed. Then she headed back towards the group, eager to get on with their adventure.

It was time to go and Naya was R.E.A.D.Y. She gathered her things and grabbed Cole’s hand, glad she had an excuse to do so. Then she reached into her pocket retrieved her ginger candy and popped one into her mouth. Hopefully it would keep the motion sickness at bay. Turning to Cole, she held out the pack. “Ginger candy?”, she said before going to place her free hand on the broken broom.

Before she knew it, Naya was experiencing the incredibly awful portkey travel feeling. Then she slammed into the ground, fortunately in an upright position. Feeling a little queasy, but better than usual, Naya said, “We made it.” She was still holding Cole’s hand and she gave it a squeeze. “I guess we’d better head into our tents. See you soon.” Naya headed for the girl’s tent and dropped her things on a bunk. This was going to be awesome.

Mamie put her bag over her shoulder, held tight to the hand of the person next to her whose name she couldn't quite remember, and grabbed onto the tire portkey with the rest of her group, pleased that Professor Williamson had approved of her packing job. She was excited to travel by portkey, as this was her first chance. It was like teleportation, from what she understood. One minute at Hogwarts, next minute at YetiLand, right?

Wow was she not prepared for that...experience. As the portkey dumped them at the campsite, Mamie dropped whoever's hand she'd been holding and clamped her hand over her mouth. She hadn't expected motion sickness. She grimaced and closed her eyes, trying not to feel like the world was spinning any more than normal. Yeck. After a few deep breaths and the earth not moving, she opened her eyes.

Yaaay camping! She pranced into the girls' tent and set her bag on a lower bunk, taking a moment to put her gloves on and admire the magical tent before heading back outside.

Cassirin 10-27-2020 01:53 AM

Oh, good! Time to gooooooo! Phoebe bounded back over to where Professor Schmoe waited and grabbed up his hand. Like best friends forever. "Professor, I'm really good at portkey travel. I mean, sometimes I throw up and I've definitely sprained the ankle of at least three people traveling with me, but I always land on my feet!"

She swung his hand because BFFFFFFFFFforever. "Have you ever fought a yeti? Like wrestled one? Is that a thing? I think I've heard about that somewhere."

Avalon leaned over to Serena after she commented on her choice to bring matches. "Don't feel bad, I wouldn't have thought of it until my grandfather reminded me. I wrote to him about the field trip and he owled me back a pack of matches," she said with a shrug. Her grandfather was a magizoologist and knew way more about yetis than she did. Avalon did remember reading somewhere that yetis hated fire, but she would have thought that her wand would suffice for conjuring flames. Well, it was better to be overprepared than underprepared.

After the inspections were complete, Avalon prepared for transport. No, she would not be holding onto someone's hand, but she would be grabbing that broken broom. With a deep breath, she braced herself for the whirlwind. The classroom disappeared in a blur. Avalon's stomach flipped as she felt herself spinning and spinning and spinning. Finally, she felt the tension let up, and before she knew it, her feet were slamming into the ground. The force sent a shock through her body, causing her to drop to her knees to steady herself. Her arms flew out to catch her balance.

The Ravenclaw brushed the snow off of her clothing as she made her way toward the girls' tent, where she dropped her bag on an open bed. At least they wouldn't have to sleep on the floor. It was times like this that Avalon was extremely thankful for magic. But just as she left her bag, she noticed a first year (Ivy) clutching a bloody tissue to her nose. "You alright there?" she asked, fishing around in her bag and offering the girl another clean tissue. She supposed it was the girl's first experience with porktkeys, judging from her obviously bloody nose. "Portkey travel can be brutal. The first time I did it, I twisted my ankle." Avalon briefly poked her head out of the tent, wondering if she should get a professor. "At least there's plenty of ice out here to help reduce the swelling," she added with a laugh.

Phoebe James

It had taken Finneas a good five minutes before he realized he had, at some point, acquired an extra shadow. This one was far less noodley than the one he was used to. Looked an awful lot like Ms. Phoebe James. Unfortunately for him, he had no idea how to... err... Address the situation. So he.... Just let it happen.

Perhaps he was starting to regret saying yes to being in the young Gryffindor's group because now his hand was being grabbed. He had perpetually clammy hands, did she take notice of them? Because... Er. The last thing he needed was the clammy hand situation to be announced to the rest of the class. That would likely only add to the undermining of his authority. "Heh, heh," he laughed awkwardly in response to her....... assurances?

She wouldn't really throw up on him though... Would she? And he needed his ankles for this trip. Was it too late to stay behind?

"Errr..... I can't say that I have. Maybe Professor Williamson has wrestled a yeti. He's much cooler than I am," he gave her an uncomfortable grin. This was his way of trying to redirect the attention in hopes that Pheoebe would gravitate towards Williamson instead. AnYwAy.

"Let's, er, rock and roll." He reached for one of the portkeys and they were off! Portkey travel always made him a little woozy.

SPOILER!!: Serena

"Omnioculars, smart," Wililamson nodded his approval to Serena's answer, as he was already searching someone else's bag. Slytherins knew better than to pack contraband that would get them all killed though, surely.

SPOILER!!: Josh

Serena waited patiently at the side as Professor Williamson interviewed Josh on the contents of his bag. Noting that he had also packed Omnioculars! At least she hadn't completely messed up packing for this trip!

Then, as swiftly as it had begun, Professor Williamson was already calling everyone's attentions, informing them that it was time to travel via Portkey. She had only travelled via Portkey once, and it wasn't a pleasant experience. Why couldn't they just travel by train?

Serena groaned, looking up to heavens as if questioning whatever Deity existed on why she deserved such punishment as travel by Portkey, before silently accepting her fate, and looking back towards her partner/teammate/new found friend? Josh "Wanna be Portkey buddies?"

Cole had been worried that Professor Schmoe would say something about his giant stuffed zouwu during the bag search, but it thankfully had passed inspection without a word. He slung his satchel bag over his shoulder before Naya grabbed on to his right hand. It was nice that they got an excuse to hold hands in class like the couple they were, usually they couldn't or weren't allowed to. "Thanks, I'll try one." Cole said with a smile before he got a piece of ginger candy out of the pack and stuffed it into his mouth. Next minute he put his free left hand on the broken broom and closed his eyes.

In a matter of moments Cole experienced portkey travel again and the awful feeling was way too familiar. It was a relief when they landed on the ground and this time he actually stood upright. Opening his eyes he gave Naya a look over. She looked a little queasy, but who wouldn't? "Are you okay?" he asked as he returned the hand squeeze. Nodding he agreed. "Yes, let's meet outside the tents again in 5 minutes." Going off to the boy's tent Cole, chose a bad by placing his satchel bag on it and placing his zouwu on the pillow as a guardian before he headed back out. Seeing a yeti was going to be awesome.

For a moment, Heath half-expected the professor to say something about the Star Wars book in his bag. He wouldn’t have made a fuss if he was asked to leave it behind, but he was glad that didn’t happen. After having his bag returned, he put it on his back and awaited further instructions. As the time for departure neared, Heath felt a weird fluttering in his stomach, though he wasn’t sure if it was nervousness over the impending portkey trip or excitement over meeting a yeti… or was it because Professor Williamson said to grab a friend's hand.*

Heath returned Claudine's glance as he grabbed on to the broken broom handle with one hand. His other hand twitched, but he stopped himself from reaching for Claudine's hand just in time. If she wanted to hold hands, he'd let her make the first move. No? Okay then…

He braced for the all too familiar queasiness as the portkey whisked him away. As the spinning stopped, he stumbled slightly on the landing but steadied himself before he could fall into the ice and snow. It didn't take him long to recover from the trip; after years of attending Ryder-Jones family quidditch excursions, he was kind of used to portkey travel. His eyes scanned the campsite, and only when he was sure all of his classmates had arrived safely did he make his way to the boys' tent. He plopped his bag on the first vacant bunk he saw, neatly setting his Star Wars book on top of it, just in case there was any doubt who the bag belonged to!

With his belongings safely stashed, Heath went back outside to await the professor's next instructions.

Checking the student´s bag Cassie just smiled and looked through it before moving on. ¨Everything seems in order here. We are going to have a wonderful time.¨ She smiled at Violet before moving to the next back and then the next. Once she heard William again she made her way with the students and grabbed a port key.

SPOILER!!: Ivy

As she landed Cassie began to brush off the snow that had rustled when she landed, but there was something in the snow that caught her eye. What was that? Her eyes followed the little trail until she came upon two of the students.

¨Are you alright? Do you need any help, I could get that fixed for you.¨ She knew how hard being a first year could be and having enough muggleborn friends she knew some of the first years were probably not expecting what a portkey felt like. It was all new to them and she knew they would get use to the feeling at some point.

Ashley was glad that there was a professor there who could fix Ivy's nose. When she grew up, she wanted to be a healer. "We should start a club for people who have accidentally broke their nose at Hogwarts. I bet there would be a lot of people in it. Or people who have been seriously injured at Hogwarts. Then everyone could join." It was a joke, but not really. This year, she had been chased by acromantulas, dropped on her head by an invisible something, had her arm almost burned off, and been betrayed by the headmaster. And that was just the things she could remember. She was pretty sure she had broken an ankle, dislocated something, and faceplanted at some point, but she honestly couldn't remember. She broke off and stared into nowhere, her thoughts in the distance.

This TL is all over the place but IT'S FINE. Mini-Activity Pt. 2

Arriving in the campsite in one piece was always a blessing, wasn't it? Williamson let out a deep sigh of relief as he only tripped over his own shoelaces and tossed the empty ginger ale can on the pile of spent portkeys. "Gather round once ya deposit your things," he called out the group, noting that a few kids were still arriving. Good. He had time to collect some firewood, talk to the locals and other scientists, and get a nice pyramid of wood stacked up for dinner.

A short while later, once most people were settled around the unlit log pile, Williamson cleared his throat. "Now, I'm no Charms professor, so you'll have to bear with me as I review this spell with you lot. It's the spell to make bluebell flames, which are waterproof and radiate heat to objects held above them. You can hold or even touch these blue flames without burning yourself. But they will burn clothes, I think, and will warm our food up. So you still have to be careful around them." He shot a knowing LOOK to a few certain first years that could not exactly be trusted around most creatures, much less around fire.

"To make bluebell flames, just wave your wand in the direction you want the flame to go and say the incantation Flammae Caeruleum. That's FLAMMAE Caeruleum. To put them out, say Extinguo." Did they get that? "And either way, even though these are fairly SAFE flames, please do NOT aim them at a Yeti if you see one. They will, probably, still be scared of the blue fire."

He took a deep breath to see if they got it. "Go ahead and give it a try on our firewood here, or even on a bit of snow, if you want." It would help warm them up, so.

FearlessLeader19 10-27-2020 11:54 PM

Claudine found that she had come back out from the tent just in time. Students were already starting to gather with Williamson. She looked around for Heath and once locating him, drifted off in his direction. Much like she would usually sidle silently up to Bernadette’s side when they were friends, she did the same to the Ravenclaw. She scanned the environment, noting the log pile and the fact that Ivy was patched up. Then her gaze was yet again resting on Williamson.

Bluebell flames. Claudine loved those particular flames. Not to mention the Charm had been one that she had easily mastered back as a first year. It was handy to have a refresher on the incantations. The fourth year opted to try the spell on a patch of snow. “Flammae Caeruleum,’’ came her commanding incantation. Her dragon heartstring wand was waved at a patch a little distance away from her and clear of anyone else. Blue flames erupted where she intended.

Perfection.

Cassirin 10-28-2020 01:11 AM

Phoebe was glad that she arrived safely via portkey, although she immediately fell hard into Schmoe. She managed to stay upright, but whether or not he could survive a full body impact with a fourth year was another thing altogether. Good luck, duck.

"Don't sell yourself short, sir. I bet you could beat Williamson in a wrestling match, if you really wanted to," she held her stomach and briefly considered throwing up before... getting over it. All okay. Ahem, time to move on. "Thanks for the ride, sir. Watch those ankles!" She skipped off to drop her bag and make use of the FIREBUILDING skills.

"Flammae Caeruleum." The snow at her feet melted. Perfect little puddle.

Waddles 10-28-2020 02:19 AM

Mamie was a little worried about her friend Ivy's nose, but it seemed like their head of house had it under control. What else were adults for, if not fixing broken noses. She clapped her gloved hands together for warmth until Williamson started going over the spell for waterproof flames that wouldn't burn you. Mamie could hardly believe it. Why weren't wizards running the world when they had stuff like this?

She pulled out her wand and crouched down to be closer to the snow. "Flam...flammae ca-caeruleum," she said, looking hopefully at the snow near the end of her wand. It...was still snow. And no flames. Huffing, Mamie stood up. Maybe her posture was bad. "Flammae cae-ru-le-um," she said clearly, pointing her wand at the snow again. This time, she could have sworn she saw a glimmer of a blue flame. Not enough to melt the snow though, apparently.

Third time's a charm, maybe? Taking a deep breath, Mamie decided to try on some of the firewood. She stood next to the log pile, and visually picked one of the logs to try to light aflame. She pointed her wand at it, trying to focus on the idea of fire instead of how cold it was. "Flammae caeruleum," she said, almost angrily. This time it actually worked, and some blue flames danced on the log she had been aiming at.

mellamaet 10-28-2020 09:15 PM

Arriving by portkey was never fun. Never fun indeed. Letting go of their chosen potkey, Serena stumbled into the campsite, leaned against the tree for a second, just to get her bearings back - vaguely registering Professor Wiliamson's instructions.

Tents. Yes, good. She wouldn't have to sleep on the ground.

Staggering into the girls' tent, the Slytherin claimed an empty bunk, haphazardly tossed her duffel back on it and staggered back out.

She reaaaally hated travelling back portkey.

Taking a seat on a dry patch of ground near the rest of the class, Serena grinned. Oh, bluebell flames! This was easy! She learned the charm ages ago at her old school. After all, it was constantly chilly on the top of Mt. Greylock, and portable flames were the perfect way to warm up.

"Flammae Caeruleum" She cast, pointing at the empty patch of space in front of her, and watching as bright, warm, blue flames errupted out of thin air.

MadAlice 10-28-2020 09:29 PM

Violet had been grasping someone's hand during the Portkey journey, but she never did find out whose, because when the Portkey suddenly arrived at their destination, it deposited her on the ground with no warning and she landed in a heap. She got up, looking frantically around for her bag and was relieved to find it lying a short distance from her. She got up, dusted herself off, decided she had a few new bruises for her trouble (why was education at Hogwarts so painful and uncomfortable?!), and trudged tiredly off to find the right tent.

Fortunately Professor Williamson had been right about the tents being clearly marked, and even if they hadn't been, she could hear boys' voices coming from one of them. She lowered her head to enter the girls' tent and threw her bag on the first bed she found empty.

Going back outside, she saw there was firewood already stacked nearby and other students were experimenting with the bluebell flames charm. Violet had already learned that one from her governess, Miss Howard, and she'd done it last year during her 'adventure,' so she was pretty confident she could manage it now. She found some unclaimed firewood, pointed her wand at it, and said "Flammae Caeruleum" and sure enough, there were the bright blue flames dancing on the logs. She held out her gloved hands toward them, though not too close, and tried to warm them up while she waited to see what would happen next. She only hoped Yetis weren't as dangerous as Acromantulas, and that Professor Williamson and his associates wouldn't run off and leave them.

SPOILER!!: Cole

Naya left the warmth of the tent and went back outside to join the group. Not a moment too soon it seemed because the professor was starting to explain what they would be doing next. Finding Cole, Naya went to stand beside him. See, she felt warmer already.

It seemed that they would be making bluebell flames. Naya was glad of that. She really liked the blue flames and anything that would keep them warm was appreciated. Did Williamson really need to tell everyone not to direct the flames toward any Yeti’s? After thinking about it for a moment, she realized that given this lot.......the answer was yes.......probably so.

Ready to get to work, Naya took out her wand and waved it toward the firewood. “Flammae Caeruleum”, she said, and was happy to see the bluebell flame appear. Success. Would they be warming food soon? Naya was starting to get hungry. Good thing she had packed plenty of snacks in her backpack. Just in case.

This was so cool!

Cecelia Summers was at an actual YETI CAMP in TIBET and she couldn't really stop smiling as she waited around for the rest of the students to assemble, taking EVERYTHING in with curious eyes. She didn't even mind the cold so much, thankful for her parents and their insisting that she pack extra warm clothes for the occasion. It had been a wise choice to listen to them.

Wand at the ready, the blonde wiggled a bit as she listened to Professor W go over the bluebell flames incantation for the group. She'd always loved bluebell flames. They were lovely to look at and she didn't ever worry about accidentally lighting something on fire that she shouldn't when using them.

"Flammae Caeruleum." A smaller piece of wood by her feet caught fire and she was pleased, shuffling a bit closer to take advantage of the heat.

MadMadamMalfoy 10-29-2020 12:22 AM

Heath looked around the camp, keeping an eye out for classmates who might need help. So far, the only one he saw was a first year girl (Ivy) with a bloody nose, but it looked like Professor Kitridge had that under control. He smiled, nodding at Claudine as she approached as if to say “Hi again”. No matter how many times it happened, it still touched his heart that she gravitated toward an awkward nerd like him, of all people, when she rarely sought out others’ company at all!

Williamson’s voice jerked Heath out of his thoughts, and his eyes shifted toward the professor. He was curious about which spell they were going to learn to keep them warm but slightly disappointed when he heard it was the bluebell flame charm. Darn, he’d hoped to learn a spell he didn’t already know! But it was okay; at least he didn’t have to worry about making a mistake in front of everyone. He blinked, unsure what to make of the professor’s last sentence. Seriously, who would be stupid enough to aim bluebell flames (or any fire spell) at a yeti?! He’d learned that most creatures wouldn’t hurt you if you treat them with respect, and even if it did become necessary to drive a yeti back, it seemed that using the spell on a nearby object would make more sense.

Following Claudine’s lead, he aimed his wand at the snow, taking care to pick an area far enough away that no one would slip and fall when the snow eventually refroze. “Flammae Caeruleum,” he said clearly and confidently, and blue flames engulfed the snow. He allowed them to burn for a few moments before putting them out with a quick “Extinguo!” He turned to Claudine. “Are you going to do it on the firewood now?” he asked. Because that’s exactly what he planned to do!

Pointing his wand at the nearest log, he said, “Flammae Caeruleum!” He watched in satisfaction as the blue flames appeared, stepping closer to the heat. Ahh, warmth! When were they going to fix dinner? He was starving!

arriving with Serena

"Thanks!" Josh chirped in response to Professor Williamson's compliment of his omnioculars. Pops had bought them for him and while he did use them as intended for quidditch, the sixth year had also used them for other extra curriculars. Outdoor WADA performances and concerts were true blessings, you know?

Drumming on his thighs a bit while waiting for instructions, he was once again nodding to Serena when she asked about being portkey buddies. "Sounds good to me! Have you ever trave---" But it was a thought that was cut short seeing as they were on a time constraint and, well, the portkeys were activated and WHOOOOOSH away they went and THUNK came his boots to the significantly colder ground of...uh...where were they meant to arrive at again? Didn't REALLY matter considering there was Professor Williamson and there were his peers and no one was lost.

...right?

Right.

Wand out and read for this whole bluebell conjuring potential disaster, he found his way back over to Serena to check on her. She hadn't looked the best when they had landed and, well, they seemed to have sort of buddied up for at least today. May as well commit to the role. "You doing okay there?" he asked with a bit of a boyish grin while ruffling his hair a bit and giving his wand a twirl between his fingers.

Flammae Caeruleum. That was at least moderately easy to say. Surely eh couldn't muck this one up too much. It had been a while since he had last used the spell himself. During a training camp somewhere way up north in Canada.

Crouching down in front of the pile of wood, Josh directed his wand to a piece that was particularly sticking out. "Flammae Caeruleum." The hint of confidence in his voice was beneficial, and not faking it till he made it kind of confidence, as a little burst of brilliant bright blue dripped out of his wand like fresh honey and coated the wood. It eventually took on a more flame-like consistency that reminded him of the time he had accidentally set a ping pong ball on fire.

Cole stood with the group as Professor Williamson started to explain what they we’re doing next; learning how to make bluebell flames. When Naya came up to stand beside him he silently slipped his gloved hand into hers with a silent smile pursing his lips. Maybe he could transfer some warmth to her that way? She looked cold.

It was thoughtful of Professor W to teach them a spell that would keep them all warm and toasty in this cold climate and through the night. He wasn’t going to direct any flames towards a yeti, in any circumstance. He might be a lion out to his fingertips, but he wasn’t stupid.

Producing his wand from his jacket pocket, Cole let go of Nayas hand reluctantly as he turned his attention toward a pile of snow. Waving his wand toward the snow he said firmly with confidence. "Flammae Caeruleum." And smiled to himself as the bluebell flames melted the pile of snow into a nice little snow puddle at his feet. "Extinguo!" Cole casted to extinguish the flames even if he liked the warmth they produced. Could they warm soup next? He was getting hungry.

Serena had been admiring her bluebell flames when she had realized that she had a partner. SHE HAD A PARTNER AND SHE LEFT HIM! She remembered vaguely registering that he had asked how she was when they landed, but she had just been too dizzy from the Portkey to even consider replying. She resisted the urge to smack her forehead at her own empty headedness before whirling around frantically to look for him, and was relieved to find him next to her, conjuring up his own set of flames.

"Hi." She greeted sheepishly. How does one go about greeting her partner, who she had abandoned after landing, even after he had asked how she was. "Sorry 'bout earlier. I was y'know, I little...out of it" Out of it was an understatement.

Thankfully, Professor Kitridge offered to fix the poor first year's nose. Avalon was not confident in her healing skills. Last time she tried to heal a cut on her own arm with Episkey, she had only given herself a giant bruise instead.

The Ravenclaw tucked her hands in pockets as she rejoined the group, already feeling the chill. It was going to be a long couple of days. Luckily, they'd be starting with some warming charms, which Avalon very much appreciated. And she fondly remembered learning the bluebell flame spell in Charms. With a swish of her wand, she said the incantation firmly. "Flammae Caeruleum!" A small flame shot out of her wand and dance on top of the fallen snow, which began to liquefy almost immediately. Avalon relished the brief feeling of warmth before the cold of the snow extinguished the flame. She performed the spell again, this time on a piece of firewood, hovering over top of it to keep warm.

For the longest while, Emmerson just stood with her mouth agape and her brows creased while Professor W went on about her irresponsibility.

There were only so many things she could keep up with and when there was homework and boys and bestfriends and dancing and stunts practice and meals, WHO honestly could remember the trip was for the whole weekend--okay, she did--but who could remember you had to pack?

Dejected, Emmerson trudged her way over to one Phoebe James, the person she would be attaching herself to for the weekend.

Why? Because even when she made a mess of things, Fifi let her stay around and never lectured her, much.

So THIS was the portkey she'd taken over to this palce and when they got there, she sullenly followed the girl at her own pace. Not skipping, but she followed, shoving at the other girl who tried to put her things next to Fifi's bunk before she could.

This was hers.

Back outside, she went and positioned herself not smack against the older girl's side but close enough that most might be uncomfortable and watched the demonstration of spells being cast by the Professor then others.

After seeing the puddle Fifi made, Emm tugged at her shirt. "How'd you do that so good?"

Did the fire dry her clothes without setting her on fire? "My socks are wet. Anyway. I"m not very good at charms when I first learn them, so I've been practicing. Learning new spells, practicing the ones I've got. Aurors can't be bad at magic."

Although she was starting to wonder if maybe she didn't want to be an Auror after all. Maybe she wanted to run away and be a professional cupcake taster. "Did you get into it with Professor Jawbone over there? He's so grumpy. I sort of done with finding grumpiness funny anymore."

FINAL ACTIVITY <3 sorry for the delay. Don't mind me. Have fun here.

"Right, let's get started cooking dinner," Williamson directed, encouraging the students to light his logs on fire. He busied himself with passing out pots and pans, noddles and water, cheese packets, sausages for roasting, mugs for hot chocolate, and so on. There was plenty of food to go around; it just needed to be warmed through.

He settled onto a log with a sausage speared on a stick for himself, aiming it toward the blue flames. "So as we're cooking and eating... let's talk about the yeti! What evidence should we look for that a yeti has been here?"

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

"Flammae Caeruleum!" Cole casted as he waved his wand with a flourish towards the logs of firewood. Practice makes perfect. Watching the logs catch fire he smiled up as the warmth started to seep towards him. Cole wasn't freezing by any means, but the warmth sure felt nice on his cold fingers. Glancing sideways at Naya he asked "What do you want to eat? Shall we roast sausages with cheese and drink hot chocolate?" It sure looked fun to roast a sausage on a stick like Professor W did it.

Waiting for Naya's response Cole helped himself to sausages and other food items as he answered the next question. "I guess the most obvious evidence of a yeti having been here would be seeing their very big human like footprints in pairs of fours on the ground." Spearing a sausage on a stick Cole held it over the fire to roast it. Did they have ketchup?

Ashley cooked her food carefully. Although this fire was supposedly harmless, she didn't want to destroy another robe with fire. She took a sip of hot chocolate. "Um, well I don't know much about yetis. Because I don't think yetis are small. So maybe they break trees a little and leave a trail that you could see or hear?" I was just a guess, honestly. She hadn't finished reading about yetis yet. Woah. It was really cold here. She snuggled a little closer into her coat. At least the hot cocoa would warm her hands.

Fireheart 10-31-2020 06:55 PM

Avalon gladly took a pot filled with water and set it on top of the fire. This was kind of fun, wasn't it? Almost like a big slumber party with all her classmates. Although she would appreciate it if it was just a tad warmer outside. Luckily, the heat from the fire and a mug of hot chocolate were keeping her hands warm. "Some people believe that yetis are related to trolls. So maybe they leave behind a bad odor?" Avalon said, plopping some noodles into the water once it was boiling. She remembered how awful it smelled during their last COMC class, when they experience Professor Williamson's troll memory. At that recollection, Avalon sniffed the air, but she only detected sausage and hot chocolate.

Claudine peered over at Heath to see him successfully cast the spell too. Great. That meant she wouldn’t have to worry about him freezing at any point in time. She mirrored his actions in extinguishing her own flame. “I guess it’s worth the practice,’’ Claudine replied, looking up at him. There was a confidence in her that told her that things wouldn’t be different from the initial spell she had only just cast. She selected a log of her own then pointed her wand at it. “Flammae Caeruleum!” Blue flames erupted there. See? It was quite an easy spell.

The Slytherin watched her flames for a while, taking the time to be pleased with herself. But then she heard Williamson announcing that they were making dinner and it was only then that she realised how hungry she was. Moving a little closer, Claudine noted that there were noodles. She liked noodles very much and collected some of it, enough for her and Heath, and a pan. If he wanted, that was. “Um… noodles?’’ she asked him. She bustled herself in bringing the water to a boil.

“We could always look for their fur. As white as it would be, and enough to blend in to the environment at times, a small amount together would be easier to spot.’’

She offered Fifi the extra sausage. "Are you really gonna be an auror?"

And it was time to eat.......well, almost. They had to cook the food first. At least that was progress. Naya decided to add some more flames to the fire first. No cooking without fire, yeah? She directed her attention toward the firewood and tried to focus. ”Flammae Ceruleum”, she repeated once again. Her next bluebell flame ignited and she was satisfied.

Looking over the food choices, Naya decided to go for a sausage. Turning to Cole, she asked, “What do you have a taste for?” At this point, just about anything would have worked for Naya. While preparing her sausage for cooking, the professor asked a question. She had a thought.

“I think we could look for some Yeti droppings. That would be evidence of their presence.” That is, if one knew what Yeti droppings looked like.

"They do have large, human-like footprints," Williamson agreed with the first half of Cole's answer but paused at the part about pairs of fours. "Do you mean pairs of two, though? Yeti just walk on two legs, like a humanoid. So you'd want to look for footprints, really."

"You're correct," he smiled at the first year, whose guesses were spot on. "You have to watch AND listen for yeti. Since they are so large, they definitely leave a trail of broken branches as they stomp through a group of trees. This also means that you can hear them coming before you see them."

"That's true," Williamson nodded to Avalon. "They ARE related to trolls. When I worked in Alaska, my colleagues and I proved a definite migration of yeti into North America through the Bering land bridge." But anyway, back to Avalon's answer. "So there is a definite relation there and, possibly, a smell, if you can get close enough to one to notice that."

"Good," Williamson nodded to Claudine. "They have white fur that helps them blend into a whiteout environment like this," he gestured around them, "but they might stand out against a green fir, for example."

The Professor wanted to know how they could tell yetis has been through here? LIKE THE PROFESSOR DIDN'T ALREADY KNOW IF THIS PLACE WAS SAFE? "Poo, sir."

He'd just ignore the discussions between these two Gryffindors about his state of grumpiness. Which, for the record, WASN'T that grumpy. Williamson was definitely never as grumpy as the Headmaster, for example.

He cleared his throat at the girls. "Correct... if you see a Yeti face to face, Cambridge, you should probably try to run or at least hide, because you will NOT be able to scare one off. Or you could use the spell I taught you..." That he'd noticed her NOT practicing, "to make some fire come out of your wand...."

He eyed Phoebe too. "Poo, yes. Perhaps you'll see some on your hike later...."

But for now, it was time to eat, and then get to bed. "Alright, kids, after dinner, it's bedtime. We've got to get started bright and early tomorrow." And he'd be casting protective wards around their tents so they could sleep in peace until they were awakened by the early sun glinting off the snow in the morning.

OOC: Sorry we ran out of time! This was a busy week IRL for me! But, if you'd like to finish the Yeti RP, I'll be setting up a thread in the St. Mungo's forum to continue our adventures. :shifty:

Thank you all for coming! :x3:
