Muggle Studies Lesson 2: Water you doing?
OOC: HELLO FRIENDS. welcome to our second MS lesson of the year OOC. students would have had plenty of classes with the Schmoe-guy already, but memory loss is a ~thing~ now so lol let's see how this goes??? while you're here, please take a look at the classroom rules. Lesson Progress: + Arrivals and Q1: What is a muggle exercise activity that you know of? Is it done individually or with a group? + Q1 Responses & Mini Activity: Show off your knee kicks + Q2: What are some advantages of WATER aerobics? What are advantages to GROUP exercise? + Q2 Responses & Final Activity |
Aboli, as was usual, had her schedule in her dorm. Ah, Muggle Studies today. Right right right. It was time to see Professor Schmoe again. The fifth year made her way up to the classroom (after almost getting lost but she'd written on her arm where the classroom was earlier) and so...made it on time. Actually, more than on time. She was one of the first to arrive. Whoooaaah! Were they gonna swim today?! Aboli BEAMED and greeted Professor S with the cheeeeriest of voices. "ELLO PROFESSOR." She then slipped her shoes and socks off, and with toenails the color of plum (thank GOD she kept them painted and her feet in good condition) she stepped into the pool. "You should have warned us. Some people have gnarly feet, you know," she chuckled in an amused sorta way. WHO WOULD HAVE THE GROSSEST FEET? Aboli couldn't wait to see. |
Um… What? Claudine stared at the pool in disbelief the moment she entered the classroom. In her hand, she gripped a small notebook. It was flipped open to a page that read: Make your way to the Muggle Studies classroom. There was also a crude sketch of the path from the Slytherin Common Room to the said classroom. Because… you know. The whole memory thing. She was brought out of her surprise by the sound of Schmoe’s voice. Again, she was met by surprise, this time by the man’s appearance. He looked so… tired. “Hi, Professor. You’re looking...great.” The adjective was for a lack of a more suitable one that eluded her at the time. Without a further word, Claudine put away the notebook. Next, her shoes and socks were removed {no, she had no stinky feet or footwear} and placed them by the wall. “Hi, Abiola.’’ {Aboli} She took a spot next to the older girl. |
Jillian won't lie it took her awhile to get to Muggle Studies. She's getting frustrated that something like this is currently happening to her. She wandered around the first few floors walking and checking every classroom until she finally found it. Ugh. She fixed herself before entering in. Making sure that her uniform was tidy- the way she likes it and her tie. She once forgot to wear it and it felt uncomfortable. Giving the professor a smile as she made it pass the door "Hello, Professor Schmoe..." greeting him and feeling relieved that she still remembered his name. Obviously she stopped to gaze at the interior for this classroom. A pool....? Blinking a few times and stared at the man who prepared it. "Looks really cool." She took off her shoes and socks. She sat in the nearest to the door way because..... no reason. She doesn't know. She felt like it. |
Jina read her notes one last time in the corridor before walking into the classroom. For some reason, she was convinced that they were to take a very difficult test in this lesson, so she had spent more time than usual studying the topic in great depth. She was therefore perplexed to see a giant pool in the classroom instead of desks and chairs. No one else seemed glad or disappointed that the test was cancelled, so she must have been mistaken. "Hello," she greeted Professor Schmoe with a sad smile. The last thing she wanted after finding out that she had revised for a non-existent test is to take off her shoes in public and enter a pool ... but after noticing her head of house's tired look (did he inflate this entire thing on his own??) she felt ashamed. The professor always put in a lot of effort to prepare lessons for them - the least she could do is to participate wholeheartedly. She quickly took off her shoes and socks and left them by the wall, then stepped into the pool and tried not to think about gnarly feet. |
Heath was getting really annoyed with his deteriorating memory! Just writing his schedule down wasn't enough anymore. He had to write everything several times, and even then, he had to check it every few minutes to make sure he was in the right place. Still it was better than losing points for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.* His grandma would never let him hear the end of it if that happened… assuming he ever got back to his family! He shook his head, willing himself not to think about that. Now where was he going again? He stopped in the first floor corridor to check his schedule for what felt like the hundredth time today. Oh right, Muggle Studies. "Hello, Prof-" Heath began as he walked through the door, but his voice trailed off when he saw the inflatable pool and several girls (Aboli, Claudine, Jillian & Jina) standing around. Usually the room layout gave him some idea of what to expect, even if his guess turned out to be way off, but he had no clue where this was going. In fact, he wasn't entirely convinced this was Muggle Studies! Had he accidentally stumbled onto a girls-only pool party or something? He blinked confusedly, turning to go. "I think I'm in the wrong room. Sorry!" |
Maybe they were going to learn some more things about memes .. that had to have been Blake's favorite muggle studies lesson of the year so far! It was great ..... and Schmoe thought his was funny right????? Right of course he did. So .... what could this lesson be about!!! And Blake was greeted with a pool..... interesting ... Schmoe was a strange bloke, no doubt about that. "Hello Professor." Blake added moving to the side of the room to remove his socks and shoes. Today was going to be fun he could tell already. |
Naya could have sworn she had Divination class today. Fortunately, she happened upon some classmates who set her in the right direction. Muggle Studies. It was time for Muggle Studies......right. The Gryffindor felt like she was slowly losing her mind. Everything was so confusing and she was always forgetting something. Right now though, she entered the Muggle Studies classroom. “Hello Professor.” Oh this was interesting. A wading pool? Ok. Naya couldn’t wait to see what the professor had planned for them this time. She took her shoes and socks off and placed them by the wall as instructed. Then she dipped her pink polished toes into the water. Resisting the urge to splash, she stood still and waited to hear what was next. This was going to be good. |
Bernie had been following Naya down from the Gryffindor tower, not really knowing where she was supposed to be right now. She'd felt like it was somewhere she WANTED to be, but she really really wasn't sure?!?!?!? So she was pretty happy when they ended up approaching Schmoe's door. He was a source of comfort for her, for some reason. She actually felt like giving the poor professor a hug when she came in, but he looked especially pale and fragile today, so she patted his arm reassuringly instead. "Hiiiii, Professor Schmoeeee," Bernie trilled with her patpat, coming into the room and hauling off her usual boots and socks with gusto. Where was she going to keep her She left her footwear lying haphazardly where she'd taken it off and eagerly stepped into the pool. No gross toes here, Bertoli. Cherry red polished ones ONLY. |
Tom walked towards the muggle study classroom as soon as he saw what was happening his jaw dropped, seriously were they allowed to just drop lessons and have a pool party, because that's what it looked like, had the Professor got permission. "Yo! Professor!" Yeah he was doing the cool kid act. "Can we have an epic water fight?" Now that would be cool. |
Avalon arrived to Muggle Studies with a copy of her schedule in hand. She only had to look at it every few minutes to remember where she was heading. Of course, she could always follow her classmates, but it seemed like the memory problem was affecting people more and more every day. So she didn't exactly trust them either. As soon as she entered the room, she stopped in her tracks. Uh, did she have her schedule wrong? Why was there a....pool? Glancing down at her schedule again to confirm, and noticing Professor Schmoe, she figured she was in the right place after all. "Hi, Professor," Avalon said as she untied her shoelaces and slipped off her socks. The Ravenclaw stepped cautiously into the pool, wondering what they would be studying today. It couldn't be swimming - there wasn't enough water in this thing. But why else would there be a pool in the classroom? |
Honestly, Kimberly pretty much kept to wearing her robes at all times, or in her bag, and just kind of... Followed the crowds. Every idea she had thus far was not working for her with keeping her schedule, but so far following people around seemed to be? She also was learning interesting things about her peers by new stalkings. Which was a nice distraction, because lately she felt like she had a 1001 worries and she was very much feeling NOT like herself. Reaching Muggle Studies -- which apparently was their class for the day -- K eyed the instructions before sitting to take off her shoes and place them against the wall. She then stepped into the pool, offering a quick, "Hello, Professor" and trying to find herself a spot to stand towards the back. She smiled at the familiar faces, but wasn't feeling much for conversation so she tried to politely avoid. She also wrote a quick note on her arm to search for Avalon at a later time to check on her friend -- when she was more up to conversation. |
SPOILER!!: hi friends Finneas waited a few more minutes to let in the stragglers, before wiggling his toes and taking a step into the inflatable pool too. Yeah, no, this wasn't a joke. They were actually doing this today. Unfortunately, he had forgotten to roll up his trousers so.... Now he was standing in an inflatable pool with soggy trousers. It was FINE. "Hullo, everyone. I'm very glad you all made it to class today." This was an appropriate concern nowadays. "As you can see... We're, er, taking a pause from the curriculum we have been studying thus far." What was that again? Something about funny pictures and captions??? Maybe?? "I thought we could all use a little brain break today, so er aNyWaY, let's take a moment to move to the walls of the pool so that we can form a circle. I'd like everyone to be able to see one another..." As they began to move, he decided to go ahead and ask the first question. If he didn't ask it now, he'd forget. "You can probably guess that we're learning about some sort of muggle leisure activity today. Specifically, we'll be talking about a particular ~EXERCISE~ activity. Some of you may have joined me for Jazzercise on the grounds earlier this year. What other muggle exercise activities do you know of? Sports can also count!" He paused for the BRIEFEST moment before quickly adding, "And please identify whether it is typically done individually or with a group, if you know this information." OOC: hi what's up y'all, welcome to schmoe's channel! Please like and subscribe while you're here and also don't post late arrivals beyond this point unless you wanna check out the IC consequences because class has OFFICIALLY BEGUN! |
Oooh, they were going to be talking about exercise? Well, that was something she happened to enjoy a LOT. Although, she did kind of hope they wouldn't be doing Jazzercise again... But maybe they could go for a run? Or do some yoga? Ooooor dance party?! Although, logically, she knew none of these things would be fun in the water. And it was definitely far too shallow for diving or synchronized swimming. Actually, what WOULD they be doing? She moved off to the side to form the circle he was requesting as her brain continued to just kind of ramble, before she realized she hadn't actually SAID anything. Settling into a spot, she raised her hand. "Dancing can be a great way to exercise. And the possibility's are endless as you can do it alone, you can dance with a partner or even an entire group. And there are SO many different styles to choose from so it never gets boring." |

Bernie was tempted to sit right down in this here pool and stretch her legs out only she was SURE she would be judged by some of her peers. Also, she wasn't a baby. She didn't NEED a kiddie pool. Though she wanted one. She just wiggled her toes and lifted her feet every now and then, NOT EVEN splashing anyone Exercise? Sports? The third year wrinkled her nose at Schmoey. Was he trying to bulk up for his "Diving, sir? That can be a group sport... er, a pair sport... or an individual one. I think. I know they get points for stuff." She quite liked watching the British Olympic Diving Team on her mum's telly every so.... well, when did the next Olympics happen? She couldn't recall. But they had GREAT uniforms, didn't they? Such a great sport to watch. From home. With a bucket of popcorn. Riveting, really, watching people fall from high spaces in tiny swim suits. Great stuff. |
By the time Claudine was standing comfortably beside Aboli, she had forgotten all about Schmoe and his greeting and wasn’t even paying attention to the others arriving. She was too busy wiggling her toes. The nails were coloured in light pink nailpolish, they were also neatly clipped. The only thing that broke her focus on her nails was a voice announcing that he was in the wrong room. Wait a minute. She knew that voice. Claudine looked up to see a familiar face {Heath}. Wasn’t he her friend? She thought he was. Luckily for him, Schmoe cleared the misunderstanding up. The third year watched Schmoe as he moved into the pool but was not surprised that he stepped in with his trousers worn regularly. She knew that he was weird and she admired him for being himself. Anyway. It was obvious that they were taking a break from their usual learning routine. She, however, followed his instruction of moving backwards towards the wall. Well, Claudine knew that Schmoe expected water related answers but he hadn’t actually specified so, if that was the case indeed. And she was not one to always follow the crowd. Her hand went up. “There’s cricket and it’s played as a team. Well, two teams.’’ |
Tom smiled as he raised his hand. “Beach Volleyball.“ That was a sport right, surely you had to do a lot of running and jumping, he had played it last year and he had enjoyed it. |
yes, everyone and their *TOES* are mentioned ~ I h8 this child WHAT in Merlin's beard had Claudine just called her?! Abiola? Aboli sent the girl the coldest of stares. She liked Claudine, but honestly - she forgot that forgetting was a thing - "It's Aboli, Claudette," she said simply, getting the girl's name on wrong on purpose. Just to see what the snake's reaction would be. Hmph. At least Claudine had pretty feet...well groomed feet. Speaking of well-groomed feet, though, Jillian came in next, and Aboli sent her prefect a friendly wave. Oh, her feet were cute and pretty. So far so good! No grossies here. Jina also had nice toes. OKAY THIS WAS GEARING UP TO NOT BE GROSS - until the first BOY of the class entered. She couldn't remember the boy's name [Heath], but luckily he hadn't taken off his shoes yet. In fact, he seemed confused. Well. Blake's feet weren't gross, and neither were Naya's, who had pretty pink polish on her toes. Cuuuute. If anyone had gross feet, Aboli would think Bernie only because the younger Gryffindor seemed like she was a mess. But nope, her feet were NOT gross, and she had pretty toe-polish too. CAYUTE. Tom and Avalon were a negative on the gross feet scale, and Aboli was beginning to feel so disappointed in her classmate's good hygiene. They were all clean. How...boring. Kimmie had arrived! Aboli sent the Hufflepuff a grin and EYED HER FEET. Nah. Cute feet. Fine. ...but class was starting, and Schmoe had called her STUDENT out of the blue, and it was weeeeeird, but they were moving past that, yes. She listened intently to his ramblings as she normally did before raising her hand to offer an answer. "Um, professor....you can jump-rope. That's usually done as a singular activity BUT you can double-dutch with multiple people if you want. You can do it for exercise, or competition OR just for fun. Lots of muggle kiddos do it at school when it's like......break time." Or whateeeever. Aboli could double-dutch...something she had only just remembered. SHE SHOULD START A TEAM. AND SHE WOULD BE CAPTAIN. |
Ewan has been here this whole time *whistles innocently* He had been here the whole time. Was he that invisible that no one had noticed him? Okay, Hogwarts had really outdone himself this year and honestly, he was not all about it. Other years, yeah sure, it had been slightly exciting but he was done with it now. Luckily, it was his seventh year so he’d never have to put up with any of this craziness again! You know, assuming he could leave that was. He was in the lesson though, even if his skin did resemble peeves more than his usual self. Whether or not anyone heard his answer to the question is another thing. Raising his hand timidly as if to test the water, he replied ”I enjoy climbing indoors and outdoors and that’s a pretty good exercise although I like to use a rope. Some muggles do it without a rope and that is not for me at all”. He really did enjoy climbing but he also enjoyed living. ”I think that it can be done alone and with other people. Like, you can climb in a group even though the actual act of climbing is alone” which was kind of why he liked it. Being alone high up, it was relaxing. Just you, some music and the ache in your limbs as you ascend on a hard-stone face. Whilst he had initially been unsure about Schmoe, this lesson in the pool…it was a good idea even though he wasn’t quite sure how he felt about sharing water with everyone else’s smelly feet. Sure, he could be doing plenty more productive things but getting to relax in a lesson was great. Sure, it would have been nicer if it was some type of jacuzzi but you can’t have everything in life |
Wait, so this wasn’t a girls-only pool party? Heath wasn’t sure what to make of that. While he was relieved that he wasn’t inadvertently intruding on something, he didn’t fancy the idea of being barefoot in front of everyone! It wasn’t that his feet were gross or anything like that, but still he wouldn’t put it past some people to make fun of him. He was self conscious, okay? Even so, Heath knew it wouldn’t do any good to complain, so he reluctantly removed his shoes and socks, placing them neatly near the wall. He cautiously stepped into the pool, looking around for a tall student to hide behind. If no one saw him, no one could make fun of him! Hoping to go unnoticed, he positioned himself near Ewan just before the lesson began. Apparently they were talking about exercise today. Great. So did that mean they would be doing some form of exercise later? Heath still had no idea where this was going, but whatever it was, he had a feeling he was going to fail miserably at it. As if it wasn’t enough to worry about people making fun of his feet, now he had to worry about them making fun of his lack of athleticism too. He was an actor, not an athlete! In his nervousness, he completely forgot what the question was. Oh, right, forms of muggle exercise. He thought for a minute. Did fencing count? He’d picked up some limited knowledge of that sport while training for a fight scene in a play, and he rather liked it. Never mind, that probably wasn’t the kind of answer Schmoe was looking for. Already second guessing himself, Heath decided to go with a safer option. “Football, or soccer, as it’s called in some parts of the world,” he said after raising his hand. “It’s a sport played with two teams of 11 people.” It also just happened to be his grandpa’s (the muggle one that he was sort of named for) favorite sport, which was the only reason why Heath knew anything about it. He shook his head, trying to block out the memories of watching football on television with his grandfather. Nope, he could not allow himself to think of his family! Then he’d start missing them all over again and getting all emotional, and nobody needed to see that! |
Even though it was cold outside, it was warm enough in the castle that splashing around in the water felt pretty nice. Phoebe's toes were going to be tiny icicles when she came out of the water again, but for now, she could pretend they were at the beach. A very bossy beach, with a Schmoe asking sports related questions. Sports? What kind of exercises did Muggles do? Not Quidditch, obviously, or anything that required magic. "I think Muggles really like to just run places. And even when they're too old, they still try to run places. Like this." Phoebe did a very good imitation of mall walking, with her fists pumping at her sides and lots of splashing. |
Naya was trying to get into the wading vibe. It would be so much better if it was summer and, you know.....hot. But anyway, it was time to get to work because class was beginning. Naya listened as the professor asked the first question. Muggle exercise. This was something she was familiar with. After listening to a few answers from her classmates, the sixth year raised her hand. In keeping with the pool theme, she gave her response. “Water aerobics is one form of muggle exercise. You do different exercises in a swimming pool. The water gives you resistance and that’s a good thing. It’s easier on your joints though because you don’t have the high impact that you would if you were exercising on the hard ground. Oh and you do it in a group.” That was probably way more than anyone cared to know about water aerobics, but oh well..... |
Missed the intros, but HIIII, SCHMOE! Isla was a dancer, and a pretty good one, too. She didn't remember all the dance lessons she's taken for years upon years before magical school, but the heart remembers what the mind forgets, ya know? She decided to stand in first position and then did a few turns, watching the water pool up around her feet then trickle away in little ripples. Ohhh, that was COOL. Next, she went up on her toes and put her arms in a circular position over her head. Dance class was SO MUCH FUN! That's what this was, wasn't it?! Right, RIGHT!? Wait...they were taking a pause from the curriculum? So no dance today?! Well that was a TOTAL BUM, but she supposed she was game for learning something new. She moved to the walls of the pool to join the circle of classmates. She raised her hand high in the air. "Chicken Fight!" she said. "It's this game where one player sits on the shoulders of another player. Then another pair of students do the same. Once they're all in place, the two players on the top link arms and try to push each other over and into the water!" |
SPOILER!!: individual responses, you know the drillll "Excellent answers everyone!" He had to HURRY before he forgot again. "Ms. Naya hit the nail on its head with water aerobics! That's what we'll be covering today." Bless her. Honestly. "Water aerobics is, er, as you can probably guess... a form of AEROBIC exercise. Or, uh, also known as cardio! Aerobic refers to physical exercise of low to hiiiiigh intensity that demands the use of our oxygen to meet energy demands during the exercise." Finneas paused momentarily because he felt that he was getting sidetracked. SCIENCE. The aerobic metabolism. Neato. "Many people who do water aerobics do so in GROUPS and in classes with lots of other people! Much like us." So fun. "While we couldn't fill the whole pool with water... I hope we can use our, er, imaginations a little here as we practice some water aerobic moves. The best way to learn is through practice, right?!" RIGHT?! He paused for all of the people who would shout 'YEEEES' because he expected all of the delighted agreements. "I'll be leading us off in some preliminary water aerobics moves. Knees up everyone! Left kneeeee!!! RIGHT KNEEE. Don't be shy, get them up, up, up!" He was moving along too. Just so that everyone could see. His soggy trouser bottoms were splashing water around as he lifted his feet. OOC: hi friends! for the mini-activity, Schmoe will lead in a series of ~moves~ for y'all to follow. You'll have 60+ hours for this, but I'll post now and again with some new ~moves~ to follow. |
