As you continue along the second-floor corridor, you will eventually stumble upon a bust of a medieval wizard who is quietly muttering to himself in Latin. But it is the antechamber near this statue that draws in a lot of students because over the years this spot has been designated as a popular hang-out area. More often than not, those who need a break from schoolwork come here to play an array of indoor wizarding games.

Scattered around this small room are chess boards, decks of Exploding Snap cards, areas for playing Gobstones, and other wizarding games ranging from Snitch Snatcher to Wizard Cracker Pop-It to Wizard Skittles. If none of these games interest you, there is a small table where Runok Ko and Rune Riddle books can be found. Otherwise, you can go check out the suit of armour that stands off to the side -- maybe you will figure out that it is guarding a passage to a secret storeroom -- or, if you feel there's more of the castle for you to explore, take the stairway that leads up to the third floor.

Sixteen and still this room was tied at the top as one of his most favorite spots to hang out in alongside the Art Classroom. It maybe even topped the Room of Requirement and you could make that room whatever you wanted it to be.

Mark stood at the threshold and looked in. It was empty so far but not for long. He just had to pick what to have a go at. He could always hone his Chess Skills. He still considered himself the top Wizard's Chess player in all of Hogwarts. But Exploding Snap was also such a fun game to have a go at too.

Another option he hadn't thought of until now was to find a nice quiet seat in the room and pull out his notes on how he could make his own Wizarding Game. It would be a dream come true to know if years from now a game he created found it's way into this very room. Though last term took it's toll on him as he tried to do this AND study for his OWLs. He'd have slightly more free time though he was beginning to study for some NEWTs ahead of time.

He opted to have a go at some Exploding Snap.

He was confident in his Chess Skills that his self titled King of Games would not be taken from him, and it was too early in the school year to let stress overtake him.

He took a seat next to some of the Exploding Snap cards and began to set them up.

Hi here crashing hi

"....Whoa."

Kitt stopped just beyond the door looking into the room. It most absolutely wasn't where he was trying to end up but in the face of all these...were these games? In the face of all these games, the Gryffindor could no longer remember his original destination.

Funny how that worked, and how frequently it had been happening since he'd first arrived.

Slowly, he walked into the room. Sure, he'd had games at home, but they were...muggle...was that it? They were non-magic games that he played with his siblings and parents. Surely, with just about everything in this joint being magic, these games were of a different variety, too.

More excited than he was nervous about interrupting, Kitt drifted even further into the room and over to the older boy.

"How does this work?"

"How does this work?"

Mark was busy setting up the cards to play the patience variant of Exploding Snap. He had the time so playing this version would be fine on his own. Bavarian Snap would be a bit of a stretch playing by himself.

His head turned when he heard a "Whoa" come from the door and saw a younger Gryffindor come on in.

He hadn't seen him before this year, but he looked older than a 1st year. A transfer no doubt. He had seen him in some of the classes though so there was some familiarity if barely. "Hey there." The Teenage Eagle smiled happy to tell anyone who didn't know whatever they wanted to about Wizarding games. He was a self-proclaimed expert after all.
"It's a matching game, called Exploding Snap. You need to make pairs of them before they explode."
It wasn't Wizard's Chess was equally pretty brutal if you thought about it, but it was heart racing at times.

DaniDiNardo 05-07-2020 12:10 AM

Exploding Snap? And the cards actually exploded?? That had to be the most brilliant thing he’d heard since breakfast. The boy gave no thought to what happened after they exploded or if they could be fixed, his attention had already been grabbed and he was soon sinking into the seat opposite the older boy.

“Can I play? Do we just flip them and hope for the best?” Kitt was familiar with matching card games. He’d played several with his siblings, but he had to admit, none of them ever e x p l o d e d. He couldn’t wait to tell Brooke. She would no doubt be the most excited about something like that. Maybe he’d get a pack to take home at some point.

“I can help.” He reached over for some and began turning them face down.

“Were you going to play alone?”

Uncle Moose 05-09-2020 11:11 PM

It was always explosions that were most interesting wasn't it? But hey, he'd give it time. The second he told anyone it still required thought and memory it bored them. It always bored them. Maybe he could explain the game with a bit more gusto? "Absolutely you can play. I'd be happy to show you how." Mark continued placing the cards out now with the added help. He seemed to get the idea of how they were supposed to be placed from what he was doing just before. "Thanks."

"You can definitely play that way if you wanted. If the game ends up going on a bit longer it'll sometimes just become hoping for the best when you flip a card. You lose more and more cards making matches much more harder to make so the explosions happen more frequently."

He sat back and rubbed his neck. Rubbing his neck was always a sign of nervousness for Mark. The question of if he was going to play it alone made him nervous. Well, As much as Mark had a love for all these games. He would more often find himself playing on his own. "I've figured out a way to make Exploding Snap into a game of solitaire. I like finding new ways to play old games."

He leaned forward and erased his nervousness with a smile once the cards were set up properly. "You ready to get your game on?" Time to start a friendly little teaching match. "I'm Mark, by the way."

For Destinyyyyy

It was yet another rainy and bleak day at Hogwarts. The black clouds seemed to be a permanent fixture around this place, it was just lucky that the castle was so huge with so many places to go that a person never got bored. Which was a good thing because Drew got bored very easily.

He had been walking aimlessly for about an hour now before coming across a weird statue that seemed to be talking to itself. Drew was tempted to stop and ask the statue what it was talking about when he noticed the room beyond and it appeared a lot more interesting that the talking statue.

The room was bright and warm with lots of different games scattered around, Drew threw himself into a chair and picked up the Wizard Cracker Pop It game and began reading the rules.

Bored. Bored. Bored.

Flora B. Thiese was bored.

Normally, when she would be at home, there were plenty of people to bother when her boredom would hit. She had her parents. She had her aunt and uncle. She had her sisters. She even had her sister's PONY. But here? At Hogwarts? There was almost NOBODY there to bother.

Well.. There was. But her parents had told her plenty of times before that she was an acquired taste and.. it was only her first year. She didn't want too many people annoyed with her this early on.

Which was why she had been wandering. Wandering, what felt like, the whole entire castle, just looking for something to do.

She didn't think she would find anything and was almost about to go somewhere on the castle grounds, because there was always something to do out there, even in the rain, when she came across the statue. The statue talking to himself. Oh. Was he guarding that room? Nope, so in she went. She didn't even bother to see what the room was. Instead, she made her way over to the boy? guy? MAN? who was sitting by himself.

It was a game room. "Rules are for losers. You don't need to read them." They were going to play, right?

The rules were actually boring and kinda confusing not that he would tell anyone that he couldn't figure out a simple board game. Drew was about to put the box back onto the table when a voice suddenly spoke. He hadn't even heard anyone else enter the room.

He slowly lowered the box and peered over the top to see a tiny person sitting opposite him and he quirked an eyebrow. "And calling someone more than twice your size a loser is a death sentence."

First years had no respect anymore.

He placed the box onto the table and pushed it towards the girl. "Show me how it's done then."

Bwahaha!

This guy was HILARIOUS, wasn't he? Flora thought so, and she couldn't help but burst out laughing. A death sentence. That was a GOOD one. She would have to remember that. Sure, she had no idea who she would use that on, but that wasn't important at the moment. If he was going to KILL her, she wanted all the DETAILS. "How would you do it? Where would you hide my BODY? Aren't you afraid of going to AZKABAN?"

Well, if he wasn't afraid of killing someone, in the very crowded Hogwarts, with walking and talking statues and lots of moving portraits that could easily identify him as a MURDERER, she doubted Azkaban would scare him.

As for the game, she pushed back towards him. "I don't know how to play it."

Her reaction took him by surprise and he actually felt a little taken aback by her bravado and her laughter. True Gryffindor right here. "I wasn't being literal." Although a few ideas of how he would do it just popped into his head. "Brave little thing aren't you." And yes he was afraid of going to Azkaban, who wouldn't be, but he not going to admit that to a first year. Best just ignore those questions altogether.

The game was back in front of him and he gave the firstie a little smirk. "And that's why we read the rules." So who was the loser now? "Apparently you have to pop the crackers but only the matching ones." The game was easy enough but he just couldn't understand the purpose of it.

"Maybe we should play something else." Okay so when did he hang out with eleven year old's?

Oh, so he wasn't going to answer any of her questions? How disappointing.

Except.. not really. It was probably a good thing, for him, that he didn't answer. His answers would only lead to Flora asking more questions, and it would just turn into a never ending cycle of questions and answers! Besides. They were in a game room. And although twenty questions was a game, there were much better games to be played.

Just not Wizard Cracker Pop-It.

"Sounds boring." Flora feigned a yawn and even patted her mouth to make it seem more realistic. "We can play Wizard Skittles! I bet you one whole galleon I can knock down all the pins on the first try!"

Did she even have a galleon? She dug around in her pockets until she found one and placed it onto the table. "What's in your pockets?"

It seemed that they were both of the same opinion that the Pop It game was not for either of them. Drew didn't think that Wizard Skittles was going to be much better but he was happy to amuse the first year. He had nothing better to do at the moment.

Wow! She wanted to bet one whole galleon. He could have just given her a galleon, they didn't need to bet but she seemed to be right into it. Drew raised an eyebrow at her question. "That's a bit personal isn't it? I don't even know your name." He was joking of course, he didn't think he had anything in his pockets but to keep her happy he put his hands into his pockets and was surprised when he pulled out a colourfully wrapped sweet and held it up still wondering how he had come to have one. He didn't like sweets.

Was that a personal question?

Flora had no idea. But she wasn't about to take the question back, and even if she could, he was pulling something out of his pocket anyway, so what was the point? She was sitting just a little bit straighter in her chair, though. And while she was disappointed that the only thing he had was a piece of candy, she did her best not to let it show.

Her parents were real good about telling her all about people who weren't well off, and well, if he only had candy, she figured he was one of those people.

Maybe she should let him win. He probably needed the galleon more than she needed the candy.

Hmm. "My name is Flora. And you have two different colored eyes." Did he know?

Actually Drew was very well off. He was in fact set to inherit a whole lot of money once he finished school and usually his pockets were full of galleons but was the point in carrying all that around at school when there was nothing here to buy. Of course if he had known that he would be making bets then he would have made sure he had some on him.

"Yes Flora, I do know that." Drew tore his gaze away from the sweet, still wondering how he had come by to have it and looked at the youngster. "I am able to see through walls because of it." Man, he wished that was true sometimes.

Welp, Flora didn't think they were going to be playing Wizard Skittles either.

Because now she was more concerned with his different colored eyes. Could he REALLY see through walls because of that? He wasn't lying, was he?

No. NO, of COURSE he wasn't lying. Why would he LIE? They were both Gryffindors, and if there was one thing she learned about being in that house, it was that Gryffindors would never EVER lie to another Gryffindor. No. That was something the Slytherins did.

She placed her galleon down onto the table and leaned verrrrrry very close to the older boy. She wasn't just asking personal questions anymore. She was invading personal space! "Which eye can see through the walls? Both of them? Were you always able to do that? Do you look in the girl's dormitories?"

And the most important question needed to be asked.. "Can I touch it?" His eye. She wanted to touch his eye. Her pointer finger was all ready!

Anymore thoughts of galleons or sweets he might of been having immediately evaporated from his thoughts the moment Flora was in his face. Apparently this one had no boundaries whatsoever and Drew found himself leaning as far back in his chair as he could go.

Which was not far enough.

"No! You cannot touch my eye!" What was wrong with this girl? He was not going to answer any of her questions either, although if he could see through walls he would for sure be looking in the girls dormitories. He was so regretting telling her the little white lie about his eyes. In the hopes of distracting her, Drew unwrapped the sweet and held it out to her.

"Here have this." And leave his eyes alone!

He may have thought he was going to be able to lean away from her and her very ready pointer finger, but the older boy was very mistaken.

Flora had the WHOLE entire table in front of her, and she had absolutely no problems with climbing on top of it to get closer to him. She was gonna touch the eye. She would even touch BOTH eyes if he would let her. Except.. He wasn't even going to let her touch one. WHY NOT? "WHY NOT?" It wasn't like she was going to HURT him! It wasn't like she was going to try and TAKE his EYE from his HEAD. She only wanted to TOUCH. One tiny little poke.

Hmmph.

She was disappointed. And as she settled back into her seat, no longer wanting to play ANY kind of game with the boy because she decided right then and there that he looked like the type who would CRY if he LOST at a GAME especially to a FIRST YEAR, she shoved her galleon back into her pocket. She was pouting. Even as he handed out the candy to her. "I'm not allowed to take candy from strangers." Her parents wouldn't be happy. But she took it from him anyway and shoved it right into her mouth.

Her parents didn't need to know. "So now you have to tell me your name." And maybe he should tell her that her nose was bleeding. Because she hadn't realized.
