Raven raised her hand. She had new what these types f Jinxes do but couldn't fully explain the jinx.
" Impedimenta spell slows down and obstructs opponent. I guess it slows dow a spell and surprises them. I don't know but the spell slows them down and obstructs them".

Cassirin 05-07-2004 04:14 AM

"Correct again, Raven... any of the rest of you are welcome to jump in at any time. Five more points to Ravenclaw. The Impediment Curse or Impediment Jinx is useful in slowing down or stopping something that is moving. Typically, this curse is used on people, to keep them from moving or casting a spell, or on objects that are being used as a weapon or are otherwise a hazard. The spell is not very effective against spells already cast... it doesn't stop the curse from hitting you, although sometimes it does slow down or weaken it."

Aris 05-07-2004 04:18 AM

Raven raised her hand and looked at the professor.

"So basicly if somebody threw an item at you. You could use this spell to stop the flying object,"she asked trying to understand thr professor statement.

In the mean while she worte down notes upon what the porfessor was saying.

virginiap 05-07-2004 04:23 AM

I believe that would be correct, Raven, as the root of the word is similar to "impede", which means "to slow or halt the progress of".

Cassirin 05-07-2004 04:36 AM

"That's right, girls. The spell will halt an object or person right where it is, or it will significanly slow it down. Either way, the spell leaves the caster time to take action in subduing the attacker."

"At this time, let's go ahead and practice this spell. I will take turns tossing this stack of Muggle beanbags at each of you. I want you to use the spell to slow down the bag, then return it to my desk for another toss. If you feel comfortable with this spell, you may practice it with a partner. Have one person begin to more towards you, and then you may cast the spell. Remember to use Finite Incantatem to end the spell before you switch. I would hate for any of you to still suffer the effects of this spell and end up being late to Potions. You know how cranky Professor Airlia can get."

Ron Potter 05-07-2004 04:41 AM

Ron smirked. this was a fun charm, especially while playing sports. He withdrew his wand again. As the Professor threw the beanbag, he waved his wand in the correct pattern, and said the words for the spell. It hit the bean bag, slowing it down drasticly. After it got close, Ron Hacky-Sacked it back to the professors desk. He turned to Raven

"Simple... hey... wanna try it on each other?" He asked

Aris 05-07-2004 04:42 AM

Raven the grabbed Ron again. She quickly gave him the bag to throw at her.

"Please dont' throw hard. I will trun and let it fly pass me," Ravensaid as she pulled out her wand and quickly begin to practice the spell and patteren.

Ron Potter 05-07-2004 04:44 AM

Tossed the beanbag up and down, he grinned
"Darn... i was looking forward to thowing it like a baseball," He said, "Well, if you insist.."
Ron tossed the beanbag lightly towards raven

Aris 05-07-2004 04:51 AM

Raven did the wand pattern and quickly yelled "Impedimenta" teh bean bag floated slowy. raven grabbed it and then too the spell off the bag (Finite Incantatem). She quickly threw it back towards Ron.

OOC: Great class professor. I enjoyed the class. I will talk to you later. I have to go to bed. It is becoming bed time for me. Night, Night/ ttyl bye Ron. thanks for helping.

Mrs. Weasley 05-07-2004 07:41 AM

Mrs. Weasley assumes the correct position and waits for Professor Rae to throw a bean bag at her. Out of the blue the professor throws it. Mrs. Weasley shouts Impedimenta and the bag immediately slows down. Cool! Then quickly she say Finite Incantatem and just avoids getting hit by the bean bag. She takes the bag back to Professor Rae's desk. That was a little too close for comfort, she says. I think I need a little more practice.

Cassirin 05-07-2004 12:42 PM

Professor Rae noticed Mrs. Weasley's discomfort. "That was quite good, dear, but if you are concerned about stopping it sooner, I suggest you practice the wand movements until you can perform them a little faster and tighter. Many witches and wizards like to do grand, dramatic gestures with their wands, but I find that subtle movements work just as well and are faster and occasionally more effective." She tossed another bean bag at Mrs. Weasley for her to practice, then continued tossing them at other students.

"This is a spell I will allow you to try out on your friends right now. I would like you all to have at least ONE chance to feel the effects of Impedimenta so that you know what it is like to be hit with this spell. You may continue to use the bean bags, and I will continue to throw them in a simulation of a 'surprise' attack, but you may also try the spell on each other. Test your limits when you are under the effects of the curse. See what you can move and how far you can move it."

anhaire 05-07-2004 01:15 PM

Greta looks around, trying to pick someone to try the spell on. Suddenly, Professor Rae throws a bean bag at her. "Impedimenta!" This time the spelled worked well, and she stopped it with "Finite Incantatem."

cherry 05-07-2004 02:15 PM

Cherry wait patiently until the professor throws a bean bag at her. She shouts,

Impedimenta!

The bean bag slows down and the says,

Finite Incantatem

She just manages to catch to bean bag, and throws it back to the professor. Looks around wondering if there's anyone who she could practice with.

virginiap 05-07-2004 05:42 PM

Hi, Cherry! We can work together. Do you want for me to try it out on you first?

Facing, Cherry, Virginiap does the wand movement and pronounces, Impedimenta! Virginia waits to see what effect this will have on Cherry.

Backslash 05-07-2004 06:53 PM

(Dodges one beanbag, which wizzes past his ear.)

Impedimenta!

(Another beanbag aimed at him freezes in midair.)

Finite Incantatem.

(Catches the beanbag and lobs it back at the professor. He has a grim smile on his face, and a look of intense concentration. It looks like he's having more fun than he's ever had, perhaps for years.)

*Now this is my idea of a DADA lesson!* He thinks.

(He looks around for anyone who may choose to use Impedimenta on him.)

impedimenta! *bean bag slows before hitting some one in the back of the head*

*bean bag is returned to professor Cassirin*

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 05-07-2004 09:15 PM

ooc: Aw! Didn't know the class has started!!!

*Nadia looks enthusiastical* Luckily we have been practicing on this spell on our own at the DA club, professor, plus we studied it last year. So I can tell you what the effects are:

Impedimenta should feel like a slight disconection of your brain from your locomotor system (all of it) for a fraction of second. In that case it's very alike Locomotor Mortis, only the last should only make you loose the sensivility, tact and response from your legs only, and for a larger period of time.

Also I heard there's two ways of Impedimenta - one is the curse, which should be more powerful, and the other is the jinx. Though there's the possibiliy that the last isn't but the well-known Trip Jinx. Like this:

Impedimenta (im-ped-ih-MEN-tah): “Impedimentum” L. hindrance - Impediment Jinx; stop or slow down object/person from approaching caster. Popular on duelling. (*Trip Jinx: Interfere with movement, making the target trip and fall :: Precedes Impedimenta, mild Impediment curse)

I also think there's a way not loose your balance when cursed, if you are concentrated enough, but I'm not too sure. This what we were aiming last time in our DA meeting.

Is that right, professor?

*looks around and spots her mate -*

"Watch out, Backslash! Impedimenta!" Nadia shouts and though the curse to him.

:P Nadia waits for an answer from the teacher while watching carefully for Backslash's actions.

Backslash 05-07-2004 09:25 PM

(Spots Nadia out of the corner of his eye, inwardly grinning. *As I suspected...indeed you are too predicatable sometimes.*)

Protego!

(He rolls aside anyway in case his shield charm is not effective, and crouches in a duel stance, facing Nadia side-on. Ducks at the last moment to avoid a beanbag. Points his wand at Nadia.)

Impedimenta!

Tidus16 05-07-2004 09:27 PM

Cool, can I duel with someone?

Backslash 05-07-2004 09:33 PM

(To Chris)
Unfortunately the only offensive spell we're practicing now is the Impediment Jinx.
Impedimenta!

(A beanbag stops in mid-flight, inches from Chris' face.)

Tidus16 05-07-2004 09:37 PM

reducto*he yells as the bean bag burst* Impedimenta* he yells sending the jinx towards backslash*

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 05-07-2004 09:38 PM

*Gets too caught up in whether she should use the Protego charm or not - gets hit (typically...)

Notices Backslash grin - Ah, this is war!

"Impedimenta - Impedimenta! Impedimenta!"

Shouts them at Backslash, a beanbang and Chris.

Tidus16 05-07-2004 09:39 PM

Protego*he says deflecting nadia's jinx* can we use anything else?

what events professor?
"Don't worry about it, dear. I just want you all to be prepared for whatever path you may choose, whether you are a future Auror or a Ministry of Magic official."

Quote:

Is that right, professor?
"Yes, Nadia... I would say that is generally correct. Excellent analysis. Generally, however, the Impedimenta curse will last for longer than a few seconds, which is why I suggested Finite Incantatem to end the curse. Very often, it is true, the curse will knock someone off their feet. On objects, it seems to have a different effect, stopping something in mid-flight or fall."

"And, Chris... I would appreciate it if you wouldn't destroy my beanbags. I plan on reusing them. Reparo! Accio beanbag!" The beanbag knitted itself back together and flew to her desk.

"Now, please finish what you are doing, and we will move on to the next spell."

Tidus16 05-07-2004 10:06 PM

okay, what's the next spell
