So the colors were for the French flag, and they would be focusing on the Eiffel Tower. This would be a fascinating lesson. Penelope had read about the Eiffel Tower in a book about architectural wonders around the world. Around her house there were a lot of books, with Dad owning a book shop. The Eiffel Tower was a really amazing structure, and it had been the tallest man made construction in the world for over 40 years. A true wonder of it's time. "The Eiffel Tower. It's located in Paris, France. The construction of the tower began in 1887 and was completed in 1889. The tower was one of the main attractions at the 1889 World's Fair in Paris." It was over 200 years old now. Were they going to discuss any of the fascinating points of the architecture? Architecture was much more interesting than food. Oh, she had said too much again. It was hard to stop talking about things that she knew about once she started talking. |
The doors closing meant it was time for class to begin. Janelle turned her attention to Professor Stewart and had her pen ready. She was sure that she would need to take notes at any moment. She discovered that they would be focusing on a famous landmark and she did not have to wait long to find out what it was. When she saw the picture, she recognized it immediately. Janelle raised her hand to give her answer. "It's the Eiffel Tower and you will find it in Paris, France." Now she was even more intrigued. What would they be learning about La Tour Eiffel? She would find out soon enough. In the meantime, Janelle sat back as her classmates continued to share their thoughts. |
Well even a first year can tell you what that was. The only somewhat challenging question is where it was located. But that was answered just as quickly. So yeah. Well Dante was just going to look around the classroom and see if something was interesting to stare at. Too bad they were in Muggle Studies because actually learning about magical anything in France would be interesting. But none of that is muggle related. Sigh. He did not even feel like taking a nap or daydreaming. This was a problem. |
Kay took her eyes off the class for one second to set the model in the center of her desk and when she looked up again, practically a hand from everyone was in the air. Some of them like Charlotte and Arielle looked rather excited. Secretly, she was very, very pleased with these responses. It told her that she had picked a great topic for the lesson. Smiling, she began calling on them individually to give their answers. SPOILER!!: Naming the Landmark! SPOILER!!: Location, Location, Location! Some individual responses under here too ^_^ SPOILER!!: The Quiet Ones! <3 There was bound to be a few quiet ones. Kay gave an encouraging smile. Hopefully they would participate in the ‘questions’ aspect of the lesson soon. Once the answers were volunteered, the woman moved to her white board with her purple marker in her hand. “Well done, all of you!’’ Could they tell how much they always impressed her? “Yes, this is indeed the Eiffel Tower. It is located in Paris, France. To add to what Ms Kettleburn said earlier, the full address given for the Tower is Champ de Mars, 5 Avenue Anatole France, 75007 Paris, France.’’ As she spoke, Kay neatly made notes on the board. “Let us focus on the construction itself. As Ms Wright mentioned, the work for the tower commenced in 1887 and concluded in 1889 for the Exposition Universelle of 1889. This happened to be a world’s fair which was held during the year of the 100th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille. The storming of Bastille was an event which signified the beginning of the French Revolution.’’ Kay paused to add some more notes. “Can anyone tell first who designed or constructed the Tower? There are multiple persons credited with this.’’ OOC: Hiya again, guys! Just want to say keep up the great work! Guesses to the last question there are more than welcome ^_^ Look out for another post in 24 hours! |
Who designed or constructed the tower? Well nuts. He just spouted the last thing he knew about France and French things |
Ohh ohhhhh! Azura knew this answer, since she loved the Eiffel Tower she had done lots of research on it cause.. Ravenclaw.. The teens hand went into the air excitedly as she waited to be called on and when it was her turn, she proudly gave her answer. "It is named for Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built it. " She said with a warm smile as she put her hand down and bit her lip a little.. Even though she knew they weren't going there, she still wanted to soak up as much information as was possible about her favorite landmark. |
Minor catchup So they weren't having a party today? Darn! That would've been fun. Oh, well... no point in complaining. Fiyero looked at the landmark replica on Professor Stewart's desk, and he immediately knew what it was. A lot of his classmates chimed in with their answers before he had a chance. Was it really worth repeating that that was the Eiffel tower and it was in Paris, France? He thought about just keeping quiet, but he knew his grandmother would never let him hear the end of it if he didn't answer that question correctly. She was descended from a French family, after all! He raised his hand. "That's the Eiffel tower, Professor," he said. "It's in Paris, France." Fiyero opened his notebook, quickly jotting down the points Professor Stewart had written on the board. He listened to the next question and thought for a minute before raising his hand again. This time he was going to answer first. No more repeat answers! "The Eiffel tower was designed by Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier," he said. Wow, those names were a mouthful! "They worked for the -sorry if I'm pronouncing it wrong - Compagnie des Etablissements Eiffel." He was sure he'd probably mangled the name of that company, but oh well... at least he tried! |
Juno raised her hand, "The design for the tower was made by Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier who where engineers that worked for Gustave Eiffel's company Compagnie des Etablissements Eiffel." She knew a lot about Paris and the Eiffel tower. Her father had inherited a home just outside of Paris and they usually spent part of their summer vacation there. She loved learning more about Paris. It was one of her most favorite places. |

SPOILER!!: next question The history of the World's Fair was interesting. Originally meant to showcase new inventions, the fairs had become a way to promote cultural exchange and for nations to improve their national image. That would be something to discuss another time. History was fascinating. The next question was about the designers of the Tower. The Tower was originally designed by Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier with embellishments added by Stephen Sauvestre. Gustave Eiffel owned the company that the architects worked for and the rights to the patent on the design, so the tower was named after Eiffel." The Eiffel Tower was really amazing. At the time it was built, nothing like it had ever been built before. |
Ooooh a whole point! It had been a while since she had earned one of those, honestly, and she still didn't quite get the point of them but still, yay! Char was about to answer, you know, that EIFFEL built it, when a bunch of people got all detailed. She was so baffled. How did they know all that already when this was the class about it? Did they use a timeturner and were doing it for the second time? She knew plenty about France without knowing all thoooooose details. And if they knew already why were they here? Weren't they bored? Oh well! She did a gesture as if to say 'what they said' and sat back waiting for something exciting. |
Who... created the Eiffel Tower? Vivian blinked. She wasn't sure she ever learned this back in her primary school, or maybe she might have forgotten it. Either way, she had no idea on who the designer or creator of the tower was. Absolutely no idea. Nevertheless, the Slytherin raised her hand. "The guy that Azura mentioned, Professor. Gaston? Gerard? Uh, but his surname is Eiffel, yeah?" She sent a small smile towards Professor Stewart, as if trying to conceal her cluelessness. |
It was interesting to see how much everyone knew about the Eiffel Tower. Janelle was still trying to figure out where Professor Stewart was headed with this topic. There were a lot of ways she could take this. Whatever was planned, Janelle was sure it would be fun. When the second question was posed, Janelle raised her hand immediately. Unfortunately, she wasn't quite quick enough. The answers came flying from every direction. When her turn came, she could only add to what had already been said. "Stephen Sauvestre was the head of the architects for Eiffel's company. The two engineers asked him to help with project, so he made some contributions to the design." It was a team effort, yeah. |
The professor got a bright and shiny smile from her as she started class, Muggle studies was one of Noelle's better subjects. She had the best of both worlds with her mother being a witch and her father a muggle. So when the Eiffel Tower was shown, Noelle knew what that was. She raised her hand and said it aloud. Now moving on, Who Created it?? This was something Noelle didnt know. She peered around the classroom as she sat next to Az. Maybe she would know because Noelle certainly didnt. That one girl. She knew. Was she correct? |
Harriet wanted to go to Paris now. It was so pretty and she hadn't been for a while. She made a mental note to ask her mother if they could go to the country in the Summer. It would be a nice break. Maybe they coudl take Grace and Coraline and go shopping. She would like that. But now back to the lesson. She couldn't miss anything. Oh. Who designed the tower? Thinking for a second, she then raised her hand. "I believe the Tower is named after someone involved in making it, but there was a team that like designed it. So... there was more than one person that like designed, and built the Eiffel Tower. I'm not too sure of their names though." Which was pretty cool. |
Yeah, what Juno said. Esme was going to answer the question but a lot of people had cut to the chase before she could and there was no point in beating a dead horse. Instead she glanced at her sister and smiled. They both loved Paris, spending a lot of time there over the years since their father had inherited a place nearby. She couldn't wait to get back to the stables during the summer! |
Hiii again Char Heheheh!! Char was beaming at her. Good times!! She was feeling more like herself lately and was SUPER glad her friend wasn't holding her recent mood against her. And for good measure she wiggled her fingers at her fellow Gryffindor. They would TOTALLY have to go get a butterbeer later, right? OH! More Paris questions... and uhhhhh. She didn't know that stuff. How did people younger than herself know that? Fascinating. Maybe their parents were Parisians? Was that what they were called? Hmmm. And then her mind began to wander to other things. Had she remembered to brush her teeth before class? Were her shoes tied? Would her dad let her dye her hair pink? Or use a charm? Hmmmm. So much to ponder. |
Uh what!? Who designed the Eiffel Tower? Yea, Skylar knew history but she didn't know THAT much details into history. Not to mention it wasn't like they had been required to read about the Eiffel Tower before coming to class; if they'd been required for some pre-lecture reading than she might have known more details about construction and design of the Eiffel Tower. Instead, the first year shall just remain baffled at her classmate's extensive historical knowledge for countries that wasn't even the one they were living in; unless they were part-French? Though she did have a very generic thing to add, because well she might have not known details, but there were people involved in nearly every construction project so they had to have been involved in something as awe-stricken as the Eiffel Tower. "I'm not sure of names or anything, Professor, but I'd imagine that the people involved with the design and the construction of such a masterpiece would be architects, engineers, the local government, and maybe even general artists. And then of course you would need skilled construction workers to actually follow the designs as planned..." Sky said, after raising her hand. |
Since so many others had already given the correct answer, Kitty didn't think it necessary for her to answer also. But Muggle Studies was her favorite subject and she liked contributing, so she raised her hand anyway. "Gustave Eiffel owned the company that constructed the Eiffel Tower. That's why it's named Eiffel, the tower was named after him. The two Muggles that led the effort to build it were named Maurice and Emile." Although Kitty had never been to France, she had read about it in a Muggle history book about Europe. "I think it's simply brilliant how Muggles are able to create things like the Eiffel Tower without magic," Kitty reflected. "It would be so easy for a team of people with wands to build something, but imagine all the work it would take to do it without any magic at all. They're really formidable, Muggles," she finished fondly. |
As the hands began raising, the Muggle Studies professor proceeded to make notes on her whiteboard, putting down all of the names mentioned. When all the answers were given, she would expound further on the roles these men had played. SPOILER!!: Eiffel! SPOILER!!: Maurice Koechlin & Emile Nouguier SPOILER!!: Stephen Sauvestre SPOILER!!: Skylar! <3 SPOILER!!: The Quiet Ones! <3 “As was rightly said by many of you, the Tower was the brainchild of engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier who happened to be senior engineers working for the Compagnie des Établissements Eiffel.’’ Kay nodded in Fiyero’s direction acknowledging that he had pronounced the words correctly. "Sometime in May of 1884, Koechlin made a sketch of his and Nouguier’s idea. Now, Gustave Eiffel, who’s company had designed and built the tower as well, was not impressed to say the least though he did give them the go ahead to work on improving the idea. The duo sought the help of Stephen Sauvestre who was the head of company's architectural department to contribute to the design. Sauvestre added decorative arches to the base of the tower, a glass pavilion to the first level among other features.’’ Kay capped her marker then began walking through the path that separated the class into two sides. “The updated version of the sketch was well received by Eiffel and he bought the rights to the patent of the design which Koechlin, Nougier and Sauvestre had acquired earlier.’’ The woman reached the back of the class then commenced her walk to the front. “There are many, many interesting facts about the Tower. Can any of you state any?’’ OOC: Heyo! This will be the final question before we get to the fun part of the lesson so hang in there for another 24 hours! <3 |
Juno raised her hand, and waited until she was called on to answer, "Well, there is a restaurant at the very top of the tower, and the lights that are on the tower were a light instillation put in by an artist in...1985 I believe it was. But they have been changed out and replaced by modern technologies multiple times sense then." Did we mention Juno loved Paris? Because she really loved Paris. She was in fact wishing at this very moment she could be there already. *le sigh* |
Azura was eagerly soaking in all this information about her favorite landmark.. One she hoped she would see this upcoming summer.. As Professor Stewart asked another question, Az's hand went straight up into the air. "The Eiffel Tower was once yellow! It has gone through many color changes in its time until they settled on its Eiffel Tower brown, and it has to be repainted every seven years to keep it looking fresh and new. " That seemed like a whole lot of work.. But.. It was worth it. |
It was time for fun facts. Janelle had her pen ready. She loved trivia and knew that she would learn some new information about the Eiffel Tower. She was prepared to take notes because you never knew when an obscure fact could come in handy. Janelle raised her hand, to share what she knew about the landmark. "You can go up in the Eiffel Tower by stairs or by elevator. But you'd better be fit if you want to climb the stairs. There are over 300 hundred steps to get to the first level and then just as many to get to the second level. After that, you have to take an elevator to the top level." Janelle knew this because she had had the grand plan to walk up all of the steps once. Although she considered herself in good shape, she had abandoned her plan after making to to the first level of the tower............because six hundred plus steps........no. |
Sam had so far spent the lesson trying to find a map of France, and then more specifically, Paris, in her textbook. She'd only ever left London to go to Hogwarts, so the subject of this lesson was completely foreign to her. Sam would struggle to identify Blackpool tower, not alone the Eiffel Tower. How others not only knew this landmark, but the builders and engineers (what did one of those even do?) she didn't know. Having found a picture of the real thing in her textbook though, she could guess it one fact about it. "Is it the tallest fing in the city, Professeh?" No, she didn't have specifics about it's height or anything, but it was the best she could offer until she caught up on some reading. |
Ooh. Interesting facts! She knew interesting facts. She was pretty good at knowing random knowledge that wasn't really that useful. But now she just needed to think of a really good fact, so that she looked really clever. That was clearly was what was important to Harriet right now. After thinking she raised her hand. "The weather can change the height of the tower. If it's really sunny, the tower can grow about 6 inches. Which is really cool" |
Interesting facts? Scarlett hardly thought any of this was INTERESTING, but of course she wouldn't voice that out loud. Architecture was just...not very thrilling. Muggle landmarks were cool and all, but after you saw it...what was left? Really? She raised her hand. "Well, there are lights that they shine on it to make it different colors, like the colors of the French flag on Bastille Day and stuff, if they wanted to do that," she explained. That was about the extent of her knowledge on the Eiffel Tower. |
