Did you forget when your Herbology journal was due, or how much longer you have on that Ancient Runes essay? What classes are coming up? The Class, Homework and General Announcements Board located on the wall by the study tables is the perfect place to check for what activities both academic and non-academic are going on in the Castle.

OOC: All Ravenclaws and Hogwarts Professors are free to post in here letting the members of Ravenclaw House know of upcoming or recently opened classes, homework assignments, or bulletins of new activities. When making a post in here, please try to include a link to the appropriate class thread and a quote or link of the actual homework assignment. If there is already a post for something try not to make another one; we all enjoy being informed, but too many repeating posts becomes repetitive. For more information on posting an announcement see the Ravenclaw Rules and FAQs thread.

**Myself (Nordic Witch) and your House Mod (hpluvr037) will be sure to keep this top post updated with currently open classes and events and a list of homework assignments and their due dates so make sure to subscribe to this thread.

Welcome eagles to term 40! :jump:

New eagles that we should all help welcome to our ranks and make feel at home in the eagle den are:
PixieRose
Cakemuggle
Rebecca Nurse
lunalovegoodsister
UmaThurman
Ravenclaw 2015

A new term means a new house pride activity that you all should check out! Want to get to know your house mates better than sign up for eagle comrades and get your biography posted.;) If you like playing in graphics programs then it'd be neat if you could create something that all eagles can wear to show eagle pride.

  • This is this term's 'potions activity'. To participate, all you have to do is post your character's arrival at the potions laboratory and taking a sample. Then, you can RP to your heart's content!
  • While not mandatory, I'd also really appreciate it if you guys VM/PMed me the beginning of the RP you started (you don't have to include all the posts ^_^).
  • The one-potion-per-two-weeks is an IC limit, you can RP taking a potion whenever you want. (But clearly, your characters can take every two weeks.)
  • I won't award any special points for this.
  • If you have questions, you can ask me!
  • Enjoy!

Astronomy homework 2

There are two options for this homework. Please only complete ONE of them for credit. Doing more will not earn you double the house points. Extra credit is available to outstanding efforts and creativity.

option one (worth 10 pts)
Using your textbook, pick ONE of the lunar formation theories and write a brief essay on it using your own words.

Your essay should cover the following (at least):
  1. The name of the theory.
  2. A brief description of what the theory is.
  3. Whether or not you believe the theory to be true or not.

Essays should be at least 5 inches in length.

You may include an illustration of the theory you selected along with your essay for extra credit.
OOC: 5 inches is the equivalent of 2 paragraphs of at least 5 sentences each. Remember to keep your writing IC as your character and to NOT just copy paste from an internet source. Same goes for any illustrations you use.
option two (worth 15 pts)
Tides tides exist in all bodies of water, even the luxurious bathtub in the prefects bathroom, but depending on the overall mass of a body of water this may be so so infinitesimally small it is unmeasurable. At Hogwarts, our largest body of water is clearly the Black Lake. While its mass is nothing compared to an ocean, it is still plausible that you will notice a change in water level over time, much like one of the Great Lakes in North America (although the Moon's effects are mostly overcome by the effect of barometric pressure and the phenomenon known as a seiche).

Your task is to go down to the lake twice a day for a week (once in the morning and once in the afternoon approximately 6 hours and 12.5 minutes apart) and see if you notice any changes to the level of water in the Black Lake by keeping a log parchment. Muggle rulers will be provided outside my office for your use, along with bright orange flags that you can use to stick in the ground to mark the area you are using to make your measurements. I suggest you write your name on the flag so as not to get confused.

Any changes in tide you find should be subtle (most likely only between 0-5 cm), but if you notice something drastic, what do you think could have caused that? Be sure to write your theory down in your tide log parchment.
OOC: Despite the IC task saying twice a day for a week, you only need 4 posts (2 in a "morning TL" and 2 in an "afternoon TL") for full credit - plus possible extra credit for thoughtful RPing.

You do NOT need to RP picking up the supplies from Professor Flamsteed's office but may do so if you wish - just keep in mind this will not count towards your 4 post total.

Flags are about 4 feet tall so your character can wade out into the water a little for their measurements. You have total creative freedom over the measurements your character finds, but there shouldn't be a sudden 10 foot change or anything too dramatic without reason;) Which your character can theorize about.

You do NOT have to make an actual log sheet unless you want to (possible extra credit if you do though). Just be sure to include the key bits within your posts.

Your RPing should take place in the Black Lake thread and please title your posts "for Astronomy homework" or something similar. PM me the links to your posts along with the other required information when you are done ^_^
this assignment is due May 31st @ midnight GMT + 9

Please be sure you have read through Astronomy & Space Navigation and paid particular attention to the rules regarding homework submission. Late homework submissions will not be accepted. Any questions, concerns, or what have you can be sent to me via PM. You do NOT have to have participated in the lesson to do this homework.

Charms Homework #1

Now that we've gotten some first class experience with the spell, I want you all to head to the Charms Annexe for some target practice. The only thing you'll need for this is your wand. Inside I set up three different levels of targets, each higher than the last. The row closet to the floor is worth 5 points, the middle is worth 10 and the top is worth 15. To the side you'll notice a self replenishing box of paint balloons. These are the objects you'll be shooting up in an attempt to hit the moving targets. Time it right, I don't want too many balloons hitting the ceiling instead. I suggest you get a feel of their movements before attempting as the targets will not only move horizontally but diagonally and circularly as well.

5 Posts minimum

Due: Sunday, May 31st @ 11:59pm GMT -5

OOC: Just have your charrie shooting the balloons into the air in an attempt to hit the targets. They might have to try getting directly under one or waiting until it's directly overhead. Remember the charm propels things at roughly a 90 degree angle so that's straight up.

StarShine 05-21-2015 05:20 PM

Potions Homework 1

Option 1
Find a partner. Swap your potions and write a paragraph (at least 4 sentences) about your experiences.
The RP part should be at least 3 posts each, excluding finding a partner and drinking the potion.
Option 2
Write 4 paragraphs (consisting of 4 sentences each) about the potion. The essay should include:
  • Pick 3 ingredients and analyse their effect in the potion.
  • How might this potion be useful?
  • How might this potion be used in a dark way?
Due: June 5, 23.59 GMT+1/18.59 EST+1

Charms Homework #2

I hope you lot were paying attention during the little game of capture the fort because I want a drawing done of a memorable scene, whether it be when there were no blue flags left, a point when Gryffindor was leading and red flags were the most prominent, the very beginning when everything was even. Won't tell you what you have to draw but you have to draw something.

OR

I must say I'm impressed at the speed with which most of you learned the spell. Now that you've proven you can change a few flags, I want you to capture places in the castle. Just go around making random items...or stretches of wall into the colour of your house and only your house. No need to change them back, I'll do so after I've done my grading, just send me a list of things you've changed.

5 Posts minimum

Due: Sunday, June 28th @ 11:59pm GMT -5

OOC: Choose only ONE option. Doing both will not award you extra points and I will not grade either.

If you choose to do the drawing, you simply have to use a image editting software such as paint, gimp, photoshop etc to draw the ditch they were in and add some flags then colour them accordingly as was the scene during class when the teams were divided and there were flags everywhere. As stated they can choose which colour was most prominent or which part of the battle they are depicting. You cannot simply take an image off the internet and hand it in as is.

If you do the RP then you absolutely must send me the links or I won't know where to look for them. For IC purposes you CAN write out an actual list of places/things you changed but ooc the links will be taken as the list.

Pick one of the two options. Both are worth 10 points and is due on Friday July 3 at 11:59 p.m. All Homework should be PM'd to me with your Username, ID number, Charrie name, year, and house.

Option 1: There are shells and vials of blood and oils in the Room of Serenity. Take one and do a reading for someone else. Turn in your notes from the reading. (You do not have to RP going to the room of Serenity to get the materials. You can if you want though. A three post minimum is for this homework and please link each post in a PM)

Option 2: Write two paragraphs (five sentences each) on your thoughts about Plastromancy and the process. How do you feel about it and do you think it should still be used or should be considered ancient along with it's originators.

Complete the Wolfsbane Potion you have started during class. Use the potions laboratory. You can work in pairs, but do not combine the potions in the cauldrons. Keep brewing your own potion.

You can find the whisked Runespoor eggs on the desk in the laboratory.
Text Cut: Full recipe
  • 1 glass of regular cow milk
  • 1 measure of fluxweed (picked on full a moon)
  • 1 handful of a tame dog's neck fur
  • 14 Jobberknoll feathers
  • 7 tea spoons of Armadillo bile
  • 7 grams of a well-whisked Runespoor egg
  • 7 aconites' roots
  1. Heat a glass of milk for 3 minutes on medium flame (seperately)
  2. Fill the cauldron fully with water and add the milk
  3. Set the cauldron on low flame
  4. Chop the fluxweed well and add it
  5. Stir 7 times clockwise with a metal stirrer
  6. Sprinkle the dog fur evenly (in about 10 seconds)
  7. Wait for exactly 7 days (note the hour and minute and do the next step at the exact time and please check the flame everyday. Do not let it go out)
    ----------------
  8. Add 7 of the Jobberknoll feathers
  9. Wait for exactly 7 days (note the hour and minute and do the next step at the exact time and please check the flame everyday. Do not let it go out)
  10. Add the other 7 of the feathers
  11. Set the burner on medium heat
  12. Add the Armadillo bile one tea spoon at a time
  13. Stir 7 times counter clockwise with a metal stirrer
  14. Add the Runespoor egg
  15. Wait for 7 minutes and 7 seconds
  16. Cast 'Recordo'
  17. Add the aconite roots one by one
  18. It will exude a faint blue smoke

Due: July 12, 23.59 GMT+1/18.59 EST+1 (daylight saving time)

Worth: 10 points (+5 extra credit available)

OOC:
  • The assignment is simple as that: RP completing the potion. I added the whole recipe to have it all in one place, but your characters should continue from the 8TH STEP even if you missed the class.
  • You need 3 posts for full credit. You can divide the steps as you wish. There is no maximum amount of posts (but please be reasonable).
  • Do not RP the last 'faint blue smoke' step and leave it to me. If your character made a mistake you missed, I will have the potion fail even if you RP it so let's keep this clean IC.
  • This is one of the hardest potions ever invented, so please be realistic with the outcome.
  • You can work in pairs, but remember: every character should brew his/her own potion. The recipe won't work if they combine the potions (not to mention the cauldrons are already full to the brim).
  • When you are at the step 14, just imagine there are whisked Runespoor eggs on the desk and RP getting it.
  • If you want to have a seperate RP in the laboratory, you can still have it. Just differentiate between the two TLs. :)
  • You do not have to PM me any links, nor is it mandatory for you to title your posts. Just have the whole RP in the potions laboratory.
  • I hope you have fun!
  • Any questions? You can ask me!

[P.A.D. Joint lesson assignment]

There are two options for this homework. Please only complete ONE of them for credit. Doing more will not earn you double the house points. Extra credit is available to outstanding efforts and creativity.

#BRINGPEBBLESHOME option 1 (15 pts)
Create a Moon/Moon phase inspired Missing poster for Pebbles and place it somewhere around the castle. 1 house point per location (maximum of 5 locations).
OOC: This is a graphic making assignment. You may either draw by hand and scan your poster or create it using an image editing program. Please PM both the image file and links to your posts (NOT THE PERMALINK PLEASE).
#BRINGPEBBLESHOME option 2 (15 pts)
Write an ode to Pebbles and perform it in front of a friend or small audience. Be sure to include as many astronomy references as you can in your ode, especially some referencing the Moon and Moon phases.
OOC: There is no set length for your ode. Effort and thoughtfulness count more than length <3 Please PM me both your ode and the link (NOT THE PERMALINK PLEASE) to where your character performed their ode publicly in front of others.
this assignment is due July 3rd @ 11 pm GMT+9

Please be sure you have read through Astronomy & Space Navigation and paid particular attention to the rules regarding homework submission. Late homework submissions will not be accepted. Any questions, concerns, or what have you can be sent to me via PM. You do NOT have to have participated in the lesson to do this homework.

Worth - 15 Points
Give the healing runic charm that you made in class to an injured person or creature, then monitor their progress for the next three days and write anything you think is significant in a journal.
Deadline: 10th-July-2015 @ 23:59 GMT

ooc: - If you want to RP this part that's fine, but you don't have to and you won't be graded on it.
- Submit three journal entries containing your character's notes about this injured person/creature's progress.
- The entries don't have to be about the marvelous success of the runic charm, they can be about the disappointing failure and your disconnection wit runes as well!
- Be creative and fun, don't sweat it. :)
- IMPORTANT: please read how to submit Ancient Runes homework before you do so.

For the next two to three months, you need to regularly check on your potted mandrake(s) and document their growth and development. I will expect at least three journal entries from you describing your observations of their health and progress. You may be as creative as you'd like with these entries, but be sure to include the date of the entry and at least a parchment of length per entry.

Regular visits to your mandrake in Greenhouse Three, as well as checking that they are receiving enough sunlight in the greenhouse and enough water, are mandatory as well. I will collect your journals at our last Herbology class this term.

Any questions? You know where to find me.

OOC:
To receive full credit on this assignment, you need to do at least one IC post in the Greenhouses where you can RP checking on your mandrake and watering it/sketching it/writing your journal entry/etc.

THEN, you need to actually write out the three journal entries (each should be about a paragraph) and submit those on the homework questionnaire along with the link to your Greenhouse RP post. Be sure you include your character's name, your member number, and your House too.

You do NOT have to do a sketch or do anything crazy-fancy with these, but I do give more points for thinking outside the box and being entertained by your posts! So have fun with this! Remember that in your journal entries, your mandrakes will be growing, getting feistier, acting like rowdy teenagers, developing acne, and toward the end, trying to move into each others' pots! Hehe. I know Bunz said you have three months to complete these journals, but my next lesson is scheduled for July 13. So I need your homeworks by 11:59 PM EST on July 12.

To sum, that's
  • one post in the Greenhouses
  • three journal entries, each a paragraph long, spaced out over the course of the three months
  • submit Greenhouse RP link + three journals + member ID on the homework questionnaire

Thank you, luffs! PM me with questions.

Notes from the lesson can be found here

History of Magic Homework Two

Invent your own Wizard Game!

Option One: If you were unable to finish creating your game in class, write an essay detailing your game. This should include the object of the game, the rules and summary of the game, how many people can play, a description of what is needed to play the game, the magical component included in this game, etc. You should also include what makes your game fun or appealing, and why you think it would or would not be a game that would stand the test of time.

This should be completed in at least three well-written paragraphs (5 sentences each) and PMed to me.

Option Two: Play your newly created game with a friend. This should be completed in three RPed posts and should include a description of how your game works somewhere in those posts. Remember that your game must include some magical element. PM the links of your posts to me.

For RP purposes, any games partially completed have been kept in the Wizarding Suite, but you are not required to post in there. Your RP can be anywhere.

Either option is due July 19, 11;59 pm EST

For information on how to submit homework via PM to me, please read this post.

There are two options for this homework. Please only complete ONE of them for credit. Doing more than one will not earn you double the house points. An additional 5 points of extra credit is available to outstanding efforts and creativity.

option one (worth 10 points)
Create your own mystery box and leave it somewhere around the castle for someone to find and, potentially, open. Contents of the box is entirely up to you, but absolutely NOTHING malicious in nature.
OOC: This is an RP assignment and requires a minimum of 2 posts to be considered for full credit: 1 post dropping the box off somewhere in the castle and 1 post revealing it's contents to the person who opens it. While the prompt implies this should be done "by chance," please do not feel like you have to leave an open post and cross your fingers someone grabs it. You CAN ask a friend or use the School Chat to ask for someone to come play :D

Please PM me the links to your posts as well as the posts of your RP partner.
option two (worth 15 points)
Write an essay judging whether or not the seemingly inherent human “need to know” is appropriate justification for the exploration of space. You may disagree or agree with what I have proposed in class. Just be sure that, if you do disagree, make sure that you explain very clearly why you disagree. Your essay should be at least 5 inches.
OOC: 5 inches equals about 3 paragraphs of at LEAST 5 sentences each.
extra credit (worth 5 points)
In the endless potential that is outer space, we have only begun to scrap the surface of things in our course studies. What ELSE would you like to explore in class? What topics interest you? What sort of things would you like to see and do? What potential do you see for Hogwarts' Astronomy?
OOC: Been a while since I have done this, but one of the fun aspects of holding lessons is touching upon topics that YOU, the fantastic RPers of SS, are interested in. So just let myself and Airey know what those may be!
this assignment is due July 25th @ 11:59 pm GMT+9

Please be sure you have read through Astronomy & Space Navigation and paid particular attention to the rules regarding homework submission. Late homework submissions will not be accepted. Any questions, concerns, or what have you can be sent to me via PM.
