• This is this term's 'potions activity'. To participate, all you have to do is post your character's arrival at the potions laboratory and taking a sample. Then, you can RP to your heart's content!
• While not mandatory, I'd also really appreciate it if you guys VM/PMed me the beginning of the RP you started (you don't have to include all the posts ^_^).
• The one-potion-per-two-weeks is an IC limit, you can RP taking a potion whenever you want. (But clearly, your characters can take every two weeks.)

There are two options for this homework. Please only complete ONE of them for credit. Doing more will not earn you double the house points. Extra credit is available to outstanding efforts and creativity.

⌦ option one (worth 10 pts)
Using your textbook, pick ONE of the lunar formation theories and write a brief essay on it using your own words.

Your essay should cover the following (at least):

1. The name of the theory.
2. A brief description of what the theory is.
3. Whether or not you believe the theory to be true or not.

Essays should be at least 5 inches in length.

You may include an illustration of the theory you selected along with your essay for extra credit.

OOC: 5 inches is the equivalent of 2 paragraphs of at least 5 sentences each. Remember to keep your writing IC as your character and to NOT just copy paste from an internet source. Same goes for any illustrations you use.

⌦ option two (worth 15 pts)
Tides tides exist in all bodies of water, even the luxurious bathtub in the prefects bathroom, but depending on the overall mass of a body of water this may be so so infinitesimally small it is unmeasurable. At Hogwarts, our largest body of water is clearly the Black Lake. While its mass is nothing compared to an ocean, it is still plausible that you will notice a change in water level over time, much like one of the Great Lakes in North America (although the Moon's effects are mostly overcome by the effect of barometric pressure and the phenomenon known as a seiche).

Your task is to go down to the lake twice a day for a week (once in the morning and once in the afternoon approximately 6 hours and 12.5 minutes apart) and see if you notice any changes to the level of water in the Black Lake by keeping a log parchment. Muggle rulers will be provided outside my office for your use, along with bright orange flags that you can use to stick in the ground to mark the area you are using to make your measurements. I suggest you write your name on the flag so as not to get confused.

Any changes in tide you find should be subtle (most likely only between 0-5 cm), but if you notice something drastic, what do you think could have caused that? Be sure to write your theory down in your tide log parchment.

OOC: Despite the IC task saying twice a day for a week, you only need 4 posts (2 in a "morning TL" and 2 in an "afternoon TL") for full credit - plus possible extra credit for thoughtful RPing.

You do NOT need to RP picking up the supplies from Professor Flamsteed's office but may do so if you wish - just keep in mind this will not count towards your 4 post total.

Flags are about 4 feet tall so your character can wade out into the water a little for their measurements. You have total creative freedom over the measurements your character finds, but there shouldn't be a sudden 10 foot change or anything too dramatic without reason;) Which your character can theorize about.

You do NOT have to make an actual log sheet unless you want to (possible extra credit if you do though). Just be sure to include the key bits within your posts.

Your RPing should take place in the Black Lake thread and please title your posts "for Astronomy homework" or something similar. PM me the links to your posts along with the other required information when you are done ^_^

• The assignment is simple as that: RP completing the potion. I added the whole recipe to have it all in one place, but your characters should continue from the 8TH STEP even if you missed the class.
• You need 3 posts for full credit. You can divide the steps as you wish. There is no maximum amount of posts (but please be reasonable).
• Do not RP the last 'faint blue smoke' step and leave it to me. If your character made a mistake you missed, I will have the potion fail even if you RP it so let's keep this clean IC.
• This is one of the hardest potions ever invented, so please be realistic with the outcome.
• You can work in pairs, but remember: every character should brew his/her own potion. The recipe won't work if they combine the potions (not to mention the cauldrons are already full to the brim).
• When you are at the step 14, just imagine there are whisked Runespoor eggs on the desk and RP getting it.
• If you want to have a seperate RP in the laboratory, you can still have it. Just differentiate between the two TLs. :)
• You do not have to PM me any links, nor is it mandatory for you to title your posts. Just have the whole RP in the potions laboratory.

Create your own mystery box and leave it somewhere around the castle for someone to find and, potentially, open. Contents of the box is entirely up to you, but absolutely NOTHING malicious in nature.

OOC: This is an RP assignment and requires a minimum of 2 posts to be considered for full credit: 1 post dropping the box off somewhere in the castle and 1 post revealing it's contents to the person who opens it. While the prompt implies this should be done "by chance," please do not feel like you have to leave an open post and cross your fingers someone grabs it. You CAN ask a friend or use the School Chat to ask for someone to come play :D

⌦ option two (worth 15 points)
Write an essay judging whether or not the seemingly inherent human “need to know” is appropriate justification for the exploration of space. You may disagree or agree with what I have proposed in class. Just be sure that, if you do disagree, make sure that you explain very clearly why you disagree. Your essay should be at least 5 inches.

OOC: 5 inches equals about 3 paragraphs of at LEAST 5 sentences each.

In the endless potential that is outer space, we have only begun to scrap the surface of things in our course studies. What ELSE would you like to explore in class? What topics interest you? What sort of things would you like to see and do? What potential do you see for Hogwarts' Astronomy?
