Arithmancy Lesson 2: The Major Cycles As you step through the Arithmancy classroom doors, you see the room set up as it always is: neat and exactly-positioned rows of wooden desks and chairs, the latter of which have cushions in a myriad of colors and textures to match your comfort and liking. The walls are filled with thick wooden shelves, on which rest a seemingly endless number of Arithmancy texts and the occasional Ancient Runes and Divination reference. Professor Shackleton sits behind her desk at the front of the room in lilac-colored robes, her skin a bit pale and her hair pulled back off her face. Her head is resting against the back of the chair and her eyes are closed, though she is clearly not sleeping. She lifts her head and opens her eyes to greet each of you softly as you enter the room and gestures for you to take your seat. |
Emma looked inside the classroom and saw she was one of the first people in class. As she took her seat, she noticed that the teacher was leaning her head against the back of her chair. "Good morning Professor," she said, wondering if the professor was feeling a tad sick. |
Cora skipped into the room, pulling her bag higher over her shoulder. She flicked a strand of her pink hair out of her eyes, and grinned at the Professor. "Hullooo Professor Shackleton!" She said brightly, before flopping into a seat at the front. "I'm looking forward to today's lesson!" |
Professor Shackleton looked up and glanced around the room. She was disappointed to see so few students in attendance and realized just how grave the school's situation had become. She greeted the students in the room, "Good morning. We're going to wait just a bit longer to allow more students to join us... hopefully. In the meantime, please open your books to chapter fifteen and begin reading. Also have your journals ready to take notes when we start the lesson." Macadrian rested her head in her hands as she tried to focus her eyes. |
Cassandra sat in the back of the class keeping mostly to herself... She waited for the class to start |
Emma opened her book to the indicated page, and took her journal out too. The class had gotten really empty...she sighed and looked at her hands. She missed all the people who were gone. Why did this have to happen, and in her first year? She was trying to convince her parents to let her stay, and if word got out that all these students were gone...that would not help her argument at all. |
Professor Shackleton sighed and stood up slowly from her chair. She walked around to the front of her desk, leaning against the edge for support, and began the lesson by saying, "This lesson will be fairly brief in comparison to most others, simply covering the topic of the Major Cycles. I am feeling a bit off, so please excuse me if I need to sit down and teach from my desk at some point." Macadrian gave a small sigh and continued, "So, what exactly are the Major Cycles?" |
"Major Cycles are a predictive tool, significantly influencing our approach to life and shedding light on our destiny" |
Kyler Shufled through he bag mindlessly, supposedly trying to find his notebook and A pencil. For some reason he didn't feel comfortable writing with quills and ink. He forrowed his brow as he pulled out the neon green covored notebook and set it against his desk. At last he got comforable in the back row of desks; easy for hidng when not knowing answers to questions or not wanting to be seen. period. And this was one of those times. What in the world where Major Cyscles? He sunk deeper into his seat, pencil still in hand and notebook open to start writing it all down. |

Adjusting her position against the desk, Professor Shackleton explained, "The Major Cycles are a predictive element of your Arithmancy chart that can help you understand the particular rhythms of your own life making you better able to interpret the major events and transitions in your life. How many Major Cycles are there and what type of cycle is each?" |
"There are three; the First is a formative cycle that governs approximately the first 28 years of your life. The second a productive cycle that governs approximately the middle years of your life and the third a harvest cycle, that governs the later years of your life." She said. |
Kyler, still sunk deep inn his seat, rose his hand freely. "There's three, m'am. Formative, Productive, and the harvest cycle." |
She'd never seen the Slytherin in classes before, let alone answering questions... and correctly. Maybe the boy was good at arithmancy, or else like many, he had a crush on the professor. |
Austin sat and listened as the two slytherin students answered the questions. He flipped open his notebook and wrote a few notes from the textbook. |

Macadrian pushed herself gently off the desk and began walking slowly down the aisles of the classroom. She explained, "As your classmates have mentioned there are three Major Cycles. The First Major Cycle is your formative cycle and governs approximately the first 28 years of your life. The Second Major Cycle is your productive cycle and governs the middle years of your life. Finally, the Third Major cycle is your harvest cycle and governs the later years of your life." Professor Shackleton drew her wand and explained as she wrote on the board, "While the rule of thumb is that each major cycle lasts approximately 28 years, we use our Life Path number and the following chart to determine a more specific age for each individual person and each Cycle." On the board was this chart: Quote:
|
Cassandra began writing in her journal Life Path: 06/29/2047 6+[2+9]+[2+0+4+7] 6+(1+1)+(1+3) 6+2+4=12 =>1+2=3 She then looked at the board and copied the line: 3 / 0-33 / 33-34 / 60-61 |
Austin copied the chart into his journal, then flipped back in his notebook to find his Life Path Number Quote:

Emma began making calculations in her journal: Quote:

Returning to the front of the classroom, Professor Shackleton resumed her position leaning against the desk and asked, "How do we calculate each of the three Major Cycles?" |
"To calculate your first cycle you reduce the month that you were born, for the second cycle you reduce the day you were born, and for the third cycle you reduce the year in which you were born." Austin answer happily, after being told that his calculations were correct. |
Kyler sighed petheticly. What was he doing in this class anyway? He never really got any of it. With the pencil touching the paper, he wrote down: Quote:
ooc: Lmfao, Cassandra. nice. And I seriously ha no clue what I was doing >.<. |
"In the first cycle you reduce number of the month you were born. For the second major cycle you reduce number of the day you were born. And finally for the third major cycle you reduce number of the year you were born." Cassandra said with her hand in the air. "I was born June 29, 2047, so my first major cycle for instance would be six, my second would be two and my third would be four." Cassandra added, she wasn't really sure if that was correct, but that's what she derived from it. |

Professor Shackleton glanced at her watch and continued on, "As mentioned, the Major Cycles are found within your date of birth. The First Major Cycle Number is found in the reduced number of the month you were born. The number of your birth month tells the theme of approximately your first 28 years of life. Please determine your First Major Cycle Number and use the textbook to determine what that number means for the first part of your life. Write this information in your journals please." |
Cassandra had already determined hers, but wrote her calculations in her journal: First: 06= 6 Second: 29 = 11 = 2 Third: 2047 = 13 = 4 |
Austin wrote in his small handwritting Quote:

Kyler caught on A bit after taking down notes. Turning the page, he wrote his calculations. Quote:

Austin began to write his other major cycle numbers in his notebook. Quote:

Professor Shackleton saw her students writing an awful lot, more than likely necessary for just the first Major Cycle. She assumed they had moved on to the Second and Third Major Cycles, so to get everyone in the same place Macadrian requested, "If you haven't already, please find your Second and Third Major Cycles as well and write the number as well as the interpretation in your journals. Remember if you have a Master Number in your Major Cycles, do not reduce it to a single digit." Professor Shackleton rested her head against the back of the chair, much the same way she appeared at the start of the lesson, breathing deeply and slowly. |
Shayna scribbled into her journal furiously, flipping through her textbook whenever needed. At the beginning, the board had seemed only like a jumble of numbers, but when she looked over at it several times, she breathed out in relief. She'd skipped over the part about the Life Path number. Quickly shuffling to the previous pages to refresh her memory on how to calculate her Life Path number, Shayna hummed along to an old ballad as she continued with her work, this wasn't so bad. Maybe she'd actually even begin to enjoy the subject this time. With frequent glances at the board, she was nearly done in next to no time. Finishing writing her last line with a flourish, Shayna placed her quill into her ink pot, before leaning back to admire her work: Quote:

After finishing his work on his three major cycles, Austin looked up to see the Professor Shackleton. "Are you all right, professor?" Austin asked. |
Kyler kept his gaze on the professor, she seemed like she was in pain. "Erm, are you alright?" He questioned, brow raised. Surely Shackleton shouldn't be teaching A class when sick. This wasn't good. "Maybe you should go to the hospital wing.." |

With that said, Professor Shackleton glanced at her watch and explained, "Alright, I have one last request before I end this lesson. I would like you all to interpret the book's explanation of your First Major Cycle. This is the period in which you all reside at this moment, so determine how valid you think this assessment is, whether you feel you've already starting to experience these things or whether they may be coming in the latter half of your First Major Cycle. Maybe give some examples of where you see these lessons in action." |
"I hope so," Kyler muttered. He was starting to like this class; getting easier after actually paying attention and all. But it wouldn't be any good with A sickly professor. With her explanation, which there really wasn't one, he nodded and turned back to his paper. After reading his notes over, his hand flew into the air. "Do you want us to write what we think on paper and turn it in or what?" Now kyler pondered if they would be getting homework or not. For he would be busy and need to schedule A time to do it all. It was adding up too much with this band thing going on. |
She had forgotten the interpretations... she flipped through the textbook. The professor seemed ill... Quote:

After what Shackleton explained, A wide smirk spread on his face. "Sure, sure." He said casueally, reaching for the pencil and scribbled down words furiously. Quote:

Professor Shackleton made her way slowly through the desks, making a note of the names of the students who did as she asked regarding the interpretations/opinions of the textbook's explanations so that she could award house points. Finally, she arrived back to the front of the room, where she drew her wand and wrote the homework assignment on the board: Quote:

Cassandra read her first Cycle. Marriage, Family, and Responsibility. Learning the lesson of co-dependence... Although now, marriage, family, and responsibility... those didn't seem as close as they had been... Alex had broken up with her after 5 years. 'If commitment cannot be made deeply or is broken, separation will be the emphasis of this cycle.' Yup... this was her at this very moment she thought reading it. 'Under this cycle new opportunities for self-expression are found too. You're learning the power and problem of responsibility.' This fit with her prefectiness... Yup, this was rather accurate. |
