| | | Entrance Hall & Sorting Totems Entrance Hall & Sorting Totems - First Floor Upon opening the double doors and walking into the grand Entrance Hall, the first thing you notice is the Gordian Knot engraved in the center of the floor surrounded by four large wooden statues – the Horned Serpent, the Wampus, the Thunderbird, and the Pukwudgie. Each one is a mascot to one of the four houses.
If you are a new student, once your name is called, you will need to stand in the center of the knot. The statue that reacts is the house that has chosen you, and each statue has its own unique reaction: The crystal in the forehead of the Horned Serpent carving glows; the Wampus carving roars; the Thunderbird beats its wings; and the Pukwudgie raises its arrow.
If the rarity occurs – that two or more statues react to a student – the student is allowed to pick any one of the houses they would like to be sorted in. This does not happen often, but it is exciting when it does. Once a student is selected by their house, their next step is heading into the next room to be selected by their wand.
During the sorting ceremony, returning students are encouraged to head up the grand staircase to the glass circular balcony in order to watch the ceremony unfold and cheer for their new housemates. This staircase will also be the way to reach the higher floors.
Through another set of doors to the left, you will find the first-floor hallways, and to the right, two sets of double doors will lead you to the Dining Hall and Kitchen.

Conall could hear his dad's words in his head when he was expected to line up. "Don't get caught." Pssh. Please, Dad. He knew the rules and what he was supposed to do. His head bobbed against the little music in his ears from the ancient ear pods. Looking up he gave a wink at some of the beautiful older girls watching from the balcony. Don't get him wrong, he still thought girls had cooties, but just pretending to flirt was a fun game to him.
"Forsfelle, Conall"
Whoop. There was his cue, he had his music turned down enough to hear his name, so he quickly plopped those pods into his pocket before stepping forward. Conall wouldn't admit it but his jaw did drop a little bit at the sight of all the statues. It was much cooler than his parents described it. So with his chest out, he practically strutted over to the knot. "Show me what you got." He whispered with a smirk.
Nothing happened at first. It took a moment, just when Conall was starting to consider if maybe he wasn't a wizard after all, and then it happened. Two statues reacted at once. The Thunderbird started beating it wings while the Horned Serpent glowed. He sighed in relief, guess it could've been worse. Now which to pick...
The Thunderbird was tempting but... that Serpent statue just looked so cool his eyes kept gazing back to it more. So he cleared his throat, before digging into his pocket to pull out (nothing) but pretending it was a ball in his hand aiming at it, "Serpent, I choose you!"
It took so much effort for Abel to keep a blank expression on his face at what was going on down there when his son was getting sorted. Sure, it was impossible to hear anything, but everyone could see what Conall was doing.
Merlin was getting the wool pulled over his eyes from the infamous Abel returning to teach at the school where he caused trouble a couple of years ago. Now the first spawn of his had arrived, clearly a chip off the old block. He was not letting his son watch cartoons anymore after this, because of how he was treating this delicate sorting. But it was fine. He allowed the tiniest of tiniest smirks to appear for a millisecond. His boy, showing no fear, was just what he expected.
Bar was getting a little bored sitting up here. He had another places on his mind while standing by his girlfriend, Kari. Watching little kids just go up to the statue and then leave was getting repetive.. at least until one of them looked to be aiming something at one of the two statues, "Are they allowed to carry stuff?" He vaguely remembered having their wand taken before appearing at the statues when he was in his first year.
But the quietness of the balcony made whatever the kid shouted near audible. "....Wow." So that was Professor Forsfelle's kid? He was tempted to look at them, but he had a feeling they would receive detention just for questioning the sight. "That's a tough sorting to top." He instead commented. |
