| | | Sorcerer's Stone chosen as #6 of Scholastic's top 100 Greatest Books for Kids Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - the first in J.K. Rowling's epic saga about the boy wizard - was chosen as one of Scholastic's top 100 Greatest Books for Kids, coming in at number six. The top pick overall was Charlotte's Web by E. B. White. The full list can be found here, and will be published in the March issue of Scholastic Parent & Child Magazine, with J.K. Rowling on the cover.
Francie Alexander, senior vice president of Scholastic, had this to say about the first part of the Harry Potter series. Quote:
From Scholastic Kid's and Family Reading Report research, we learned that one book can make a difference and motivate kids to read more challenging material than ever before. Harry Potter was, and is, that important first book for many readers.

This is awesome! JK is a genius! To think that she had all of this in her mind is amazing. I am actually re-reading the series again because I just can't get enough. I am in the middle of the first book and I still get lost in it and feel the magic all over again like it was the first time reading it!!!!

I think that Charlotte's Web was a good choice for #1, but if they had to make a 100 Greatest Book Series, Harry Potter would have be at least in the Top 3. I also think that The Diary of Anne Frank should have come before Green Eggs and Ham, but that's just my opinion.

It's so true! HP has inspired so many people to pick up a book that never would have otherwise. Great choice, Scholastic!

Oooo so many of my favorite childhood books are on that list! And of course it's not a surprise that Harry Potter is there, because honestly, how can a child not fall in love with that world?
One thing that surprises me a bit is the fact that the Hunger Games is on there. Don't get me wrong, I love those books almost as much as I love Harry Potter, but isn't that for a bit of an older audience? When it says, "100 Greatest Books for Kids," I just assumed the age range went up to 12 at the most...

I remember reading most of those books. Good old days. And congrats to HP for making it to #6! (And I'm not against Charlotte's Web on #1 too.)

I'm glad that HP made #6. I wouldn't be reading as much as I am today if it wasn't for JK Rowling for writing her wonderful HP novels.

This is fantastic!
I love the quote by Francie Alexander. It's so true. Harry Potter came out when I was 10 and it's the whole reason why I love reading right now! I read so many other series also.
THis is incredible. So happy for Jo. |
