Quote of the Week - Stephen King

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/rovie/qotw5.gif

Renowned American author Stephen King discussed his opinions on contemporary writers recently, praising Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling for her literary work. When asked if his success helped pave the way for other highly successful authors like Jo and Stephenie Meyer (of the Twilight series), Stephen stated he knew that Jo read his stories when she was younger and he believed it influenced her as a writer.

Quote:

I think that I serve that purpose for some writers, and that’s a good thing. Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. ... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn.

FoxFire 02-03-2009 07:07 PM

:gasp: Buuurrrrn!!! :xd:

Stephen King is a big fan of Jo's

Lol... One thing that Jo definitely did learn from Stephen King was how to overuse deus ex machina. :xd:

Shopgirl3876 02-03-2009 07:13 PM

 BURN!!!!!!! Indeed, wow! He didn't hold back did he.

Padie 02-03-2009 07:32 PM

:lmao: I love that quote. It just pwns

I might like Twilight but JK is just so much better that there's no possible comparison ^_^

PandoraBlack 02-03-2009 07:32 PM

truth!! twilight is like diane steel...looll

evanna11 02-03-2009 07:35 PM

:lmao:
Lol, I agree Jo is a better writer when you look at the little things and stuff.. but I still love Twilight too

No, he didn't hold back... :P
Oh, and I agree with the not comparng..

ZappyZoe 02-03-2009 07:35 PM

Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn.
lol

NiamhDanaholicsAnony 02-03-2009 07:44 PM

OMG I LOVE YOU STEPHEN KING!!I'm glad somebody finally told it like it is!Twilight is so badly written it gives all aspiring writers hope of publication,so it still serves a purpose!:L

MeredithRodneyMckay 02-03-2009 07:58 PM

I am weeping with laughter here!
Oh dear...
Stephen King you rock for your directness.

cake.ninjak 02-03-2009 08:15 PM

It's about time someone in a high position said it! :D

Stephen King is my new hero.

Luna Laufghudd 02-03-2009 08:26 PM

AHAHAHA
oh that is so true, omigosh Very well done mr King! :xd:

Ive read Twilight, and they are indeed awesome, but cmon! Jo is flabberghatingly greater compared to Meyer. I was honestly surprised that she had a degree in english (or whatever it was that she has...)

But still, both Jo and Stephenie are indeed helping young writers to be get an idea of how they should and could do it themselves :)

edit: number 13 to post, Yaaaaaaaaaay!

onar 02-03-2009 09:26 PM

Totally agree with King! J.K is the best!!! And King's books rock too!!!

Ms_Nessa24 02-03-2009 09:35 PM

OuCh!! A Little Harsh...
But I like the Honesty!

LORDVOLDY 02-03-2009 09:38 PM

that hurts :/ but I agree, Rowling's writing is superior to Meyer's, but I do commend Meyer on interesting subject material, although HP is still way better.

Patronus Charm 02-03-2009 09:38 PM

uh, wow....that hurt. seriously, in Stephen King's Dark Tower series, he makes reference to JK herself, Harry Potter, sneetches, Slytherin and house elves!!!! i almost choked when i came across it while reading this 7 book series.....!

Jojogali 02-03-2009 09:45 PM

Oh that was hard xD no painkiller !

Kaos.Doodles 02-03-2009 09:54 PM

:rotfl: Wow.
Best. Quote. Ever.

THANK YOU that someone FINALLY said that. *bows down to SK*

Paint.the.Limelight 02-03-2009 09:58 PM

Wow. I am laughing so hard right here that people are looking at me funny.

I have to disagree though. I really like Twilight.

But HP is better of course.

Hermionespell 02-03-2009 10:09 PM

I love you, Stephen King, for making both the wonderful remark about Jo and the true comment about Stephenie Meyer! ^_^

Taiya89 02-03-2009 10:27 PM

Owned!
Pwnd!
Burn!
Squashed!
I can't think of any others...

But OUCH!
SM is a bad writter...READ HP, BETTER STORY LINE, BETTER DESCRIBTION AND FRED (R.I.P) IS HOTT!

Ginny GL 02-03-2009 10:34 PM

That was a bit harsh!

Nabs 02-03-2009 10:37 PM

HAHAHAHAHA I always did love Stephen King :D A truly talented writer can obviously weed out the good from the bad. He's very direct, isn't he? That was a brilliant quote.

griffin_girl 02-03-2009 10:39 PM

LMFAO. Go Stephen. I really love the Twilight series, and yet I'm not a member of any of the fansites. HP is just more captivating!

Egyptian_Blue 02-03-2009 10:39 PM

:xd: Love Stephen King. And Jo of course. :D

BanaBatGirl 02-03-2009 10:40 PM

Ahhhhhahaha YES! This quote is made of win.

Stephen King is the King and he just told it like it is, yo. Meyer's creative enough she just...yeah, not a good example of precision language or writing.

:xd: You might have a point there too.

Blackened 02-03-2009 10:43 PM

Oh the bluntness, hehe.

I wouldn't say SM can't write a darn, her books are enjoyable, just not that great in terms of quality. Nothing compared to JK or other authors better than JK. Still, he could have been a bit more diplomatic, but ah well :xd:

#1_harry_potter_fan_22 02-03-2009 11:01 PM

OH! what now Twilight fans??? jk. Gosh...I just love Stephen King more and more with every interview:lol:

sophykay 02-03-2009 11:01 PM

LOL wow that just made my day!

Even if you like Twilight, you have to admit that Stephenie Meyer's writing isn't very good ... especially compared to Jo!

Deadmau5 02-03-2009 11:11 PM

King is AWESOME! Finally! I think all the fangirls will silently retaliate to that one. Good to know he's on Jo's side :D

Angie 02-03-2009 11:18 PM

Haaaaaa. :D I just read it on LJ, and I was like, I hope this is on SS. :xd:

But yeah, he's right; I mean, I've read the Twilight series, and I love the books, but if you put Stephenie Meyer's books vs. JK Rowling's books, there's just no comparision, as JK is one hundred times better. -nods-

Though I agree with someone up there that said he should have been a little bit more diplomatic. The Twilight Series are Meyer's initial books, after all.

lotrfrk11 02-03-2009 11:27 PM

Lol whoa. That was... my goodness.

dobby freak 02-03-2009 11:28 PM

That is so mean:( I like Twilight. You're a skunk, King!

And you look like this :gollum2:

BURN!

ronhermioneroc12 02-03-2009 11:31 PM

Ouch! Talk about very blunt!! LOL... I have never read the TS so I cant say anything about it. I have no interest in it. HP I was not interested in either at the time (as everyone faints LOL) but I saw the movies and decided to give the books a go- fell in love w/ HP series, especially the whole Ron/Hermione dynamic :)

LelanaJ 02-03-2009 11:35 PM

Haha. Someones a bit open-minded there. Ah well, he speaks the truth.

(Don't kill me fanny girlies...)

Either way, Harry Potter is waaaay better. -nods- But, Stephen King --who's books I LOVE-- should have had some tact. Even if what he said is true. :xd:

hpnaiv 02-04-2009 12:35 AM

AMAZING.

I will memorize this quote by tonight. He is now one of the most amazing people EVER. I --- nope --- he --- amazing. I. LOVE. THAT. QUOTE.

Even HE knows Meyer is horrible! I thought I was the only one !! :D YAY!

lavender_07 02-04-2009 01:13 AM

Harsh...

It's quite true though. JK is an infinitely better writer when it comes to technique and style. However, I'm a huge Twilight fan & although she's not a good writer, her plots & characters more than make up for it!! [I think she has a better knack for developing characters than JK]

Anywho, both HP & Twilight rock
<3

X-Girl 02-04-2009 01:39 AM

Lmfaoooo.

All I could think while reading that was, "Boy oh boyyy is Shad gonna love thisssss." :xd: I lost track of how many times he's pretty much said the same thing in his own words. *le sighs* And, while I snickered when I read it and completely agree...Owweee?

I wonder if creating such an unrealistic guy that seems to stem from every woman's dream has anything to do with it. *whistles and loves on Edward regardless*

Even mediocre characters in HP like....STAN *said the first person who came to mind* have more characterization and claim a unique aura that Meyer's characters lack, if you ask me.xD They're just ideals that we can't help but be attracted to. *shrugs*

Potter for Minister 02-04-2009 01:53 AM

Amen to this! I used to be a fan of Twilight, now I just wish they would all fall off a cliff or something. Anyone want my copies of the books?

Patronus Charm 02-04-2009 01:54 AM

One simply cannot compare the two ladies.

ginnypotter80 02-04-2009 02:17 AM

Its logic that in a harrypotter fansite nobody speaks in favor of twiligth. I think it's a really interesting topic, but can't be compared to Harry Potter, they aren't in the same line...I think Stephen King shouldn't be so biased...It's like comparing pears and apples...Magic and Vampires...they are completely different story...sorry....but how do u feel if the twiligth fans start saying crazy things about HP??....common..we hp fans should stand up for our tolerance, bravery and courage..not for criticizing....

hpluvr037 02-04-2009 02:29 AM

That's so blunt. Stephen King makes me laugh.

aliciahutchinson 02-04-2009 02:41 AM

LOL that was a little harsh, but great for Jo!!! I havent read anything from the Twilight series, but I know a few people who have, and they all love the books...but I'm a die hard HP fan and it just feels wrong in a way...i dont really know why....

Weasley_forever 02-04-2009 03:26 AM

Why should Stephen say anything in any way that isn't exactly how he feels? To spare the Twilighters feelings? Please. He spoke the truth. He's not out to make friends with SM or her fanbase. I applaud him for that.

Wolf Girl 02-04-2009 03:26 AM

That was a bit harsh! But, I'll give him props, he has gumption to tell that to legions of Twihards that will pummel him with rocks.

But, of course, even though I am a Twihard, I won't pummel him. Simply because he is Stephen King and he was half way true. :D But I wouldn't say she can't write. She can. Just not as good as JK Rowling.

You're right; wow, that was strong! Glad he's a fan of Jo, but that was really a slap in the face for Twilight's author. Hummm.

cgold 02-04-2009 04:07 AM

It's true. Meyer is not a talented writer while JK definitely is. Nonetheless, I really love the Twilight series. I'm one of those fans who is aware that Meyer is a crap writer, however, I think she has a lovely imagination.

French_December 02-04-2009 04:55 AM

HAHA! I hope Stephanie doesn't hear about this.

Prof. McGonagall 02-04-2009 05:53 AM

I read this on Yahoo and I was PO'd until I got to the part where he spoke highly of our beloved JKR!!! Otherwise, there would be major backlash!

half_blood_prince 02-04-2009 06:28 AM

actually i like both authors, meyers books im reading right now and im on breaking dawn and i love the whole series, with rowlings i love how she opens our imaginations.

Great quote! Thank you for bringing us that one, MasterofMystery! :)

Harry potter is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

rellybelly 02-04-2009 09:52 AM

I don't like his comment very much. Some things you just don't say, and especially not when the whole word is going to be reading it.

MalfoyzBeloved 02-04-2009 10:54 AM

It was hard not to burst out laughing at this :D Ill never forget it.. if anyone does forget this that'll be amazing.
Gotta love Stephen King. Only he can say stuff like that and get away with it (but he better look out and :hide2: for awhile... those Twi-hards might not be too happy about the blunt truth... who the heck came up with that word? It sounds weird :P)

I mean, I used to be a Twihard but now... they arent HORRIBLE or anything, but Bella and "role model" should NEVER be used in the same sentence and Edward... is ok sometimes but overall is very irritating. The mutant spawn and Jacob just made me P.Oed at the end of the series. It was average until then. Then it fell off the cliff and it should stay down there! *its still my secret vice (read Twilight 12 times even tho that isn't the best book of the series by far*)
I :heart2: Emmett, Jasper, and Alice
(especially Emmett in book 3 of Breaking Dawn*cough*)
Fangirl moment over...

Steph and J.K should NEVER be compared. Both have their own talents and such, but J.K, quite simply... obviously has much more :)

lillypotter.7 02-04-2009 11:53 AM

i love king but i love stephenie and jo as well what a mean thing to say about Edward Cullen and Bella SWan i think Stephanie did a great job at it ......love you Stephen but you totally wrong about Mmmmeyer.......i love all the work of all three authors

each individaul has their own strenghths and weaknesses and they have different thngs to offer

i agree that we all dont like the same thing but at least consider that we all could possiably like all three authors and still be happy some on dont bash one because you feel you better

Felix_Wildcat 02-04-2009 12:58 PM

I agree with all the Twilighters and Meyer-supporters up there. Stephen was too hard on that. JKR and SM are both authors and have their own style of writing and mistakes. Don't judge them too hard. Remember, even if you don't like Twilight, its fans and author deserve some respect.

I support both vampires and wizards.

elmo_the_emo 02-04-2009 01:00 PM

BURRRRNNNN!!!!!!

lol hahahahahahahah

HollyCullen 02-04-2009 01:41 PM

I agree, but they are both best-sellers so apparently who gives a crap what he says?

But I am glad he respects J.K.R.

DeathEater24601 02-04-2009 03:27 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. *diiies*

I love Stephen King. XD

That's the best thing I've heard all day.

phoenix_tears 02-04-2009 04:26 PM

Awesome quote !

Stephen King is an awesome writer ! I like Twilight but Jo and Hp are way better .. no comparison !

:D

Ama 02-04-2009 04:47 PM

I read Twilight, because I don't like judging a book I have not read. I went there completely open minded for people whom I trusted recommended it. It wasn't to my taste. Meyer's narrative style leaves a lot to be desired and the characters while momentarily entertaining in the end show none (if very little) character development to keep me interested.

JK Rowling wrote books that I love. Not that I'm still willing to forgive her for that last book. (Merlin, you can say whatever you want but DH was simply horrible fanfiction in a hardcover) At least Jo provided me with incredibly believable characters (most of the time) through several years and seven books.

And Stephen King...is Stephen King. I love him and his work. He's always been rather eccentric as most writers tend to be especially writers of his genre. He simply just said what he felt and I respect that.

Now, that I got all the serious stuff out: Dude. EL. OH. EL. HAHA.

Jinny_Watson_7 02-04-2009 05:58 PM

Hahah well said Steven^^
i dont like this twilight i watched the whole movie and didnt see anything cool in it...sorry all the twi-lovrs everyone has a taste u know...

laura-tonks 02-04-2009 07:23 PM

 Go Stephen King! Tell them like it is!

HARRY LOVER#1 =) 02-04-2009 08:15 PM

OOOH.... That was harsh!!! (But funny)
I dont like the lack of humility![:/]

Slytherin Fox 02-04-2009 09:16 PM

I'm glad he likes Jo, but I like Twilight, as well! Is there no happy medium?

linzeroo 02-04-2009 10:07 PM

Well...that was rude. Personally, after reading a few of Stephen Kings novels AND writing my Junior year research paper on him, i have personally come to the conclusion that his books are dragged out and boring. Oh, and frankly hes...uhmm well...pretty odd. I would read a Stephenie Meyer novel over a Stephen King novel any day hahahha

h/g ship lover 02-04-2009 10:17 PM

Oooh...haha...ouch. Stephen King is so awesome! I like the twilight series very much but I agree that Jo is a fantastic author and Stephenie Meyer is nothing compared to her.

dobby freak 02-04-2009 10:36 PM

King, your mean! I. Hate. You.

Sorry If I offended anyone

ladycplum 02-04-2009 11:12 PM

This just makes me love Stephen King more. Meyer got pwned! :xd:

mineylee 02-05-2009 01:00 AM

i love the story of Twilight, but i do agree that JK's writing is amazing!

Anum 02-05-2009 02:08 AM

OMG STEPHEN KING, YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I totally agree with him! Twilight is turning into a phenomenon because the story line is great, and the characters, but the writing is TERRIBLE!!! I mean, I have read the Twilight series because my friends recommended them to me and I like the story line, but lets be honest here: JK Rowling is a WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better writer than Sstephanie Meyer...Way to go Stephen King, thanks for being honest!!! :albus3:

Hedwig18 02-05-2009 05:09 AM

HAHAHAHA. In your face Twilight and SM. I barely know this man but now i think i love him lool. The true always win! Harry Potter and Jo are the best and have no comparison!!! HP Forever!!!!

Ms Wood 02-05-2009 12:25 PM

hahahaha, so funny. he really let it all out.

i agree though...

Ginevra_P 02-05-2009 04:15 PM

:lmao: hahahhah! We all know that Jo is amazing.

TheDeathStick 02-05-2009 04:15 PM

Boom goes the dynamite

Thank you Mr. King for saying that, because its so true. Meyer shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence with JKR, especially if its trying to compare writing similarities.

fallen-angel 02-05-2009 11:09 PM

lmfao Oh yes!!!! Soooo true! I love that guy!

iwantorlando05 02-05-2009 11:24 PM

I COMPLETELY AGREE!! Stephen is a brilliant writer, so I'm sure he can recognize other great authors when he sees them. I bet there are alot of upset Twilight fans out there. :D

Apparently u didn't read others peoples comment. Stephine Meyers is the author of the twilight books

katiebell 02-08-2009 03:19 AM

^Actually that would be Stephenie Meyer.

Zoe 02-08-2009 04:12 AM

Oh ouch!

I do have to agree with Stephen there. Compared to Jo, Stephenie Meyer isn't really that great of an author.

GinnyW21 02-08-2009 06:25 AM

That was just plain mean. I like both HP and Twilight and I like them both the same.

WoW!! The King has named the Queen!! (:D we already knew that)
I read twilight books I like them, but after you finished them they get bored, I mean I can re-read them without sleeping.....I've tried.....HP is so much better!! You can read and re-read them, over and over again and you always get excited in the triwizard tournamente, you still crying with sirius's death....and with all that!! HP ROCK!! :D :D :D
