J.K. Rowling's second hand-written The Tales of Beedle the Bard auctioning for Lumos

The second of seven rare copies of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, hand-written by author J.K. Rowling for those close to heart, will be auctioned off Sotheby's London in December, with some proceeds going to Lumos, and expected to bring in up to £500,000.

The bejewelled copy was given to British publisher Barry Cunningham, who signed the rights to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for Bloomsbury nearly 20 years ago, and launched the literary career of J.K. Rowling.

Quote:

J.K. Rowling: "Six of these books have been given to those most closely connected to the Harry Potter books during the past 17 years. This seventh copy will be auctioned, the proceeds to help institutionalised children who are in desperate need of a voice. So, to whoever now owns this book, THANK YOU - and fair fortune be yours!

Cunningham's special edition has an inscription in it from Rowling (who approved of the Sotheby's auction), which said: “To Barry, the man who thought an overlong novel about a boy wizard in glasses might just sell … THANK YOU.”

Cunningham had this to say about giving the book away:

Quote:

“It was an amazing and totally unexpected gift. It’s absolutely breathtakingly wonderful, and I now want to make sure I can do good with it.”
The book will be on display at Sotheby's London the week before it goes to auction, on December 13, 2016. The first copy auctioned off back in 2007, specifically written by Rowling to be sold for charity, brought in £1.95million for Lumos-related philanthropic causes.
