Harry Potter vs. King Kong vs. Narnia - Box Office 2005

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has blown away all compition in the Box Office. It is currently at the number two spot for the "franchise" (Jo hates that it is called that) behind Sorcerer's Stone - which no Harry Potter film will likely beat.

An interesting chart to watch is the Goblet vs Kong vs Narnia chart over at BoxOfficeMojo.com. It shows that although Goblet had the lowest budget of the three (a massive $150 mill) it looks like neither competing film will catch up with it.

I find it interesting that over 65% of Goblet's worldwide total comes from outside the USA. Compare that to Narnia's less-than-half.

The Hollywood Reporter (via Yahoo! News) reports...

Quote:

Warner Bros. Pictures started out 2005 with Oscar gold as "Million Dollar Baby" was crowned best picture, and it finished the year with plenty of hard cash thanks to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, "Batman Begins" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

The trio each earned more than $200 million at the domestic box office, powering the studio to first place in the year-end derby with a company record $1.37 billion in sales, just $13.5 million ahead of Fox. All told, Warners' share of the domestic market was 15.6% vs. Fox's 15.4%.

Warners also led the international box office race, reaping more than $1.7 billion, the studio's second-best haul.

The fourth Harry Potter movie, directed for the first time by a British filmmaker, Mike Newell, proved that the series is only improving as its teen protagonists age; sales to date stand at $277 million.

"With each successive movie, and successive book, you continue to build a fan base," says Warners president of production Jeff Robinov. "So there's people who have seen all four movies and who have not read the books, and you have those that have read all or some. It's gained its own momentum."

Ginpotter 01-05-2006 03:23 PM

PS won't beat as it was the first HP movie and all the kids want to see Harry Potter on the screen, talking, walking and making adventures. GOF was really great. I think no movie of HP will beat PS but movie 7.

Accio Firebolt 01-05-2006 03:34 PM

WOw that's awesom!!

Petrovich 01-05-2006 03:39 PM

That's what is more impressive for me! You hardly ever have a sequal of a movie do that fantasitcly well compaired to its first part. That's amazing! Wow!

I know they'll never read this but thank you so so much to everyone that made Goblet of Fire the best yet and for having me addicted! Ive seen it 4 times and I intend to see it more times still! CONGRATUALATIONS!!

Love Cat xxx

nelly 01-05-2006 04:47 PM

wow

That's interesting that HP did so well considering it's budget.

Gage 01-05-2006 04:50 PM

thats cool, I thought narnia looked like they wimped out on the CGI and character design, looks lower budget if you ask me.

Mrs Felton 01-05-2006 04:51 PM

Cool!! I haven't seen Narnia or KK (and I wont be seeing that, I'm scared of the gorilla) but they must have brilliant special effects if they're even being compared to HP.

SiriuslyInLove 01-05-2006 04:56 PM

wow! That's really great :) Go Potter!

Kazters 01-05-2006 05:02 PM

Narnia made me want to sleep!

but gof althought the effects arent great in some parts it is still a much better film

Vanilla Sky 01-05-2006 05:13 PM

I hated King Kong, and Narnia doesn't look a patch on what the TV series used to be. It's not a real surprise that GOF has outshone them all :)

carolinelambton 01-05-2006 06:20 PM

I've seen HP and Narnia but HP definately wins! Narnia was good n the effects were brill but u cant beat HP!!

angeline_fire 01-05-2006 06:30 PM

Warners must be loving it all....

GoF simply rocks!

griffin_girl 01-05-2006 07:42 PM

go GOF!!!!!!!!!!! yay!:woot:

CedricsGryffindorGirl 01-05-2006 07:44 PM

that is so great. i really enjoyed the book on Goblet of Fire, and i really enjoyed the movie. but then my friend didnt. and that is what i agree with her. even though the movie was pretty long they left out a lot of stuff. stuff that would actually bring excitement to the movie. i just really glad that it is up there in the box office :woot:

OtterySt.Catchpole 01-05-2006 08:06 PM

Ottery smashes box office records. No really with a crowbar even

All this focus on the money the movie is making is sad, I think, no one's talking about the quality of the movies or anything like that, because in the long run no one remembers the box office numbers for The Wizard of Oz, or The Godfather, but dang if they're not brilliant films... *fires the cannons*

Besides, next year Superman comes out and that's going to blow these numbers away, and then who cares because something else will come out and blow those numbers away and then who cares...and so on ad infinitum.

Star Wars probably has the biggest movie numbers, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the last three released really sucked. LOL

So what I'm trying to say here is, let's look at what's truly important...

Put Rupert in a bathtub like Dan and you'll see box office numbers shattering...LOL You gotta love those fangirls...LOL

 The only one's who should care are the shareholders of Warner Brother's stock...LOL

PrioriIncantatem 01-05-2006 08:32 PM

Goblet of Fire is brill!!!! :woot:

dans_grl431 01-05-2006 08:38 PM

Iv seen Hp and and Narnia. I liked Hp better even though the effects were good in Narnia. go HP :woot:

OdiSSe 01-05-2006 08:51 PM

I haven't seen Narnia and KK yet. But that wouldn't change my opinion.
GoF is simply best!

kissin'R.G.39 01-05-2006 08:53 PM

I hope that Hp will win! They deserve it best!

padfoot92 01-05-2006 09:03 PM

Thats very cool

Hermionespell 01-05-2006 09:09 PM

Horrah! Go GoF!

foreverxlonely48 01-05-2006 10:11 PM

interesting! i saw king kong and the effects were good but i didn't like it as much. dont think i'm gonna watch narnia though. just not my type of thing. but WB must be really happy.

Olivia Granger 01-05-2006 10:34 PM

Wow! That's really impressive!!! Though I don't think any movie could beat SS/PS if one of them had to it would be number 7 I mean by then it will probably have 10x the number of fans it has now!!!! GoF is totally awsome tough!!!!!!!!

Wolf Girl 01-05-2006 10:40 PM

That's cool!

Fortune_Cookie 01-05-2006 11:09 PM

Wow, that's cool! Chronicles of Narnia is really good, though. Really good how GoF has brought in more $$! :P

redrooster 01-05-2006 11:10 PM

Congrats to GoF

dracomalfoy 01-05-2006 11:51 PM

WOOOOOOO!!!!!! GO HARRY POTTER!!!!!!!! :woot: i havent seen narnia or king kong but i wont because they dont interest me.

Renate 01-06-2006 12:00 AM

I liked King Kong more than GOF, but I liked GOF more than Narnia. All 3 films are excellent. I was kind of disappointed with Narnia though. It wasn't as action-packed as I had expected/hoped.

Edit: I thought Star Wars Episode 3 was great too. Almost as good as the original three.

prettyinpink 01-06-2006 12:52 AM

great movies...thats cool....go GOF!!

~Slytherin_Heir~ 01-06-2006 01:06 AM

anyways, wonderful news!

mione_grint 01-06-2006 02:14 AM

GOF rocks and also does Narnia but I absolutely hated King Kong

IckleRonnyPrefectLuvrr 01-06-2006 02:40 AM

OMG that's sooo awesome! I love Harry Potter and the GOblet of Fire! IT's the best movie EVER and I'm sooo glad it's beating the other movies!

I<3myWheezy 01-06-2006 04:33 AM

Sales to date stand at $277 million....OMG !
I thought that Narnia was good but they hyped it up way way to much for what it actually turned out to be. King Kong was 3 hours long...um,yeah..it was good but if I had to pick out of the three the first would be HP4,then KingKong and then Narnia.
I went to see Goblet 9 times..I wouldnt do the same for the later two movies(and I'm a fan of The Chronicles..well,the books at least..even though Will Moseley is a hottie)

Sirius15 01-06-2006 07:24 AM

That is freakin AWESOME!!!!!
^THEY ALL AGREE! Don't you boys?

And I agree with Beav, that is a WHOLE load of cash right there! :) :shifty:

FearlessLeader19 01-06-2006 08:29 AM

thats cool.

kid dreamer 01-06-2006 12:10 PM

i havent seen the other 2 so i have no clue!

beckic 01-06-2006 02:03 PM

i havn't seen the other two films, but i can see why HP is doing better than them. even my dad enjoyed it!

loony 4 ........ 01-06-2006 04:00 PM

All of the three are awesome movies but Star Wars came top in 2005 movie list

Lily's Eyez 01-06-2006 04:08 PM

lol.....interesting movie choices....

angelmonkey 01-06-2006 05:19 PM

well i'll have to say that gof is best. have no interest in king kong but i also did love narnia. loved it because they totally followed the book. that's great

Belgarion 01-06-2006 06:56 PM

Narnia was great, King Kong way too long, and obviously HP has got the better storyline to begin with...

Lady_Jezz 01-06-2006 07:57 PM

Yeah, cool, but that comparison to King Kong and Narnia is a tad weird, I mean, those films were released at a later point in time....ah well, HP rulez!

slythringurl04 01-06-2006 10:55 PM

hmm.. king kong was ok too long, and i love the narnia books and i really liked the movie! i dunno if gof will beat narnia

paddywaddy 01-06-2006 10:59 PM

King Kong is awesome. Narnia is okay. GoF is bloody brilliant.

The first is always the best! My favorite book is OoTP,hopefuly it'll be the one that comes near beating PS. But as was said,GoF was/is WAAAAAAY better than Kong and definetly loads better than Narnia.

roxy<3hp 01-07-2006 04:16 PM

That is SWEET! GO GoF!!!

I find the Narnia thing especially interesting because aren’t those English books as well? You’d think classics like that would gain a certain amount of popularity from their fans. After seeing all three, I can honestly say that they are all good. But GOF definitely beat out Narnia for villains- The White Witch was really bad. When it comes to King Kong, it’s hard to judge between the two. GOF is clearly going to be more popular as it is a family film. I think GOF will stay on top because it has a much larger fan based audience then the other two- Personally, even if the movies were awful, I would still see all of the HP’s.

*~HufflePuff Gurl~* 01-08-2006 05:24 AM

Of course Harry Potter all the way. Harry Potter for the Top!

gem 01-09-2006 12:47 AM

All three movies were awesome so the fact that they're competing? makes sense.

Adora_Ava 01-09-2006 01:45 AM

this makes for great competition!

Lisal 01-13-2006 07:45 PM

Goblet of fire rules!!!
