Half-Blood Prince release date pushed back to summer 2009 (UPDATE #2)

Warner Brothers have today announced that the Half-Blood Prince release date is to be pushed back to summer 2009. The release date will now be July 17th 2009.

Quote:

In making the announcement, Mr. Horn stated, “Our reasons for shifting ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to summer are twofold: we know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment. Additionally, like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers’ strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films—changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer.”
Quote:

Commenting on the release date change for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” David Heyman, the producer of all the Harry Potter films, offered, “When Jeff Robinov explained the rationale behind moving the release date of ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ to July 2009, it was immediately apparent that this offered us the potential to reach the widest possible audience. I am extremely proud of this latest film and of the work of David Yates and our incomparable cast; I believe we have developed and pushed the series further still. We are all looking forward to sharing it with Harry Potter fans around the world, even if we have to wait just a bit longer.”
The official website for the film has been altered to reflect the change in release date.

UPDATE: A new statement from Alan Horn, Warner Bros. president and chief operating officer has emerged;

Quote:

"The picture is completely, absolutely, 100 percent on schedule, on time. There were no delays. I've seen the movie. It is fabulous. We would have been perfectly able to have it out in November."
Quote:

"We would never do anything to hurt one of the movies or the series. We love our fans."
UPDATE #2: Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. head of distribution, spoke early Sunday about the decision to change the release date for the sixth film.

Quote:

The studio had been considering the date change for three or four weeks, "but it really didn't kind of get on the front burner until sometime within the last seven days," Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. head of distribution, said Sunday.

But ... Didn't the trailer say Nov 08? Or did I imagine it? xD

Si 08-14-2008 08:50 PM

SERIOUSLY!?
I just saw this on ONTD and thought "is it gonna go on SS?" and now here it is.
But I wanna know why they'd put the date of the release on the teaser trailer and then change it :/

lotrfrk11 08-14-2008 08:50 PM

WHAT!?!

(ok, that wasn't my initial reaction, but I can't my initial reaction down, for that would be swearing.)

It did. But this is an official press release. The repercussions of which are huge, but that's for the studio to deal with.

Gah. Seriously.

This makes me want to see the movie less, to be honest. Honestly, this is ridiculous.

First we get a trailer that takes for-fricking-ever to make its appearance, and now we don't even get the fricking movie until next friggin summer.

Do you think this will affect the DH production? Would they put off shooting until after HBP is released, or keep filming on schedual for that?

Potter for Minister 08-14-2008 08:58 PM

This is not possible. No.
It's always about money isn't it.
I am so mad right now.
I had big plans for Thanksgiving, which included this film.

According to what I saw, it's supposedly not going to affect DH production but I dunno. This gives the editors like what ELEVEN MONTHS to fiddle around with it!? HBP better be so epic I wanna see it more than once like TDK was.

Try reading the quotes. They do give their reasons.

No. Yates said in the press release *points to link* that DH will start in February, as planned.

Padie 08-14-2008 09:01 PM

I can't believe this. They've GOT to be kidding. They can't just do this to us! Well, I mean, clearly they can but it's hardly fair! There are thousands of people out there waiting to see this film and they do this? GAAAH >.<

Next thing they're going to say DH'll come out an year later too <_<

Sirius_Padfoot 08-14-2008 09:02 PM

NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! I was gonna watch that on Thanksgiving, now I gotta wait LONGER?! That's really unfortunate

Ginny GL 08-14-2008 09:03 PM

I've received one of the hardest blows in my cereer as a Potter fan!

Nearly a year instead of three months! Thats cruel and unusual punishmente!

Angie 08-14-2008 09:03 PM

Oh, great. :/
-Grumbles-

Maya Ellwood 08-14-2008 09:05 PM

My first reaction:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My second reaction: WTFHOMFGBBQ?!?!?!?!?!??!??!?!?!?!!?

My current reaction: SOMEONE SUE THE STUDIO FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ARGH. *fumes coming out from ears*

allucha 08-14-2008 09:07 PM

I think we're going to be seeing the film in clips like we did for GoF. I hope we don't, but unless they release a bunch of promo stuff and trailers, things aren't gonna be good.

Oh well. Their film. Their choices. <_<

argentinaz_angel 08-14-2008 09:08 PM

It's all quite silly. I mean HBP will make millions no matter when they release it, and GOF was released in November as well! Plus, they have to edit everything! The trailer, the list of dates on harrypotter.com ... it doesn't make sense to me >_<

ebony_wandson 08-14-2008 09:09 PM

Oh, that is below the belt, WB. My initial reaction was 'WHAT IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS FLUFFY?!'

I have always said that Warner Bros getting their hands on Potter was going to be the worst thing that ever happened to us fans.

GAH!

Now, I wonder how this will effect the Royal Premiere in November, what with them putting the date back, that surely can't still be going on?!

*mutters stream of profanities under breath*

EmmaRiddle 08-14-2008 09:12 PM

^ We're working to find that out as we speak.

Note that this move is less about HBP and more about WB's lack of releases for next year. It's not that HBP won't be ready, far from it. It's that there's a gap next summer that needs filling and this is the best film to do that.
