'Fantastic Beasts' films female lead Katherine Waterston's short bio, film highlights
While Eddie Redmayne might be rather well know now, having recently won an Academy Award for his work in The Theory of Everything, the female lead of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Katherine Waterston, is still an up-and-coming actress.
Waterston's role in Fantastic Beasts, as Newt Scamander's future wife Porpentina, or Tina for short, may be one of her first leading roles. She has had a slew of supporting roles in the last decade - the first of, perhaps, being the Oscar-winning film Michael Clayton (2007).
Most notable was her last performance, as Shasta Fay in Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice, which was released by Warner Bros. late last year. A clip about Waterston's character from the film can be seen here (do note that there are strong themes):
Waterston had small roles in other features, including The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them, Robot & Frank, The Babysitters, Taking Woodstock and HBO's series Boardwalk Empire. She will next be seen in the Steve Jobs' biopic, out later this year.
Waterston is the 35-year-old daughter of famous American television actor Sam Waterston (Law & Order), and is American herself (though born in the UK). The press release from Warner Bros. announcing her casting as Tina described the following. It is presumed that Tina is an American witch.
Quote:
Waterston will play the pivotal role of Tina, short for Porpentina, a witch who—unlike the beloved characters from Rowling’s Harry Potter books—works her magic in the U.S. She meets magizoologist Newt Scamander (Redmayne) when he stops in New York City on his travels to find and document magical creatures.
A few photos of Waterston from the past few months can be seen here.
Though Waterston is two years older than Redmayne, it is unknown if that reflects their characters' age difference for the films.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, written by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and directed by David Yates (who has the biggest hand, alongside Rowling,, in casting for the film, as shown by the Tweet below), will have its first installment release in November 2016.
.@RobertLindsay I'll have a word with David Yates. Don't touch the beard (not because of the role - I just like beards).
