David Heyman says 'Fantastic Beasts' movie to have 'few big' roles, early in casting

David Heyman's recent update on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them's notes that the production is in early stages, including casting for what he mentioned were a 'few leads', including Newt Scamander.

Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne, who is currently rumoured as frontrunner for the role of Scamander, was brought up in conversation, though the producer of the Harry Potter series would not commit to any names or a time frame as to when filming will start exactly. Heyman stated previously that it should start sometime later this summer.

Obviously, it’s very difficult to successfully adapt any book series, and you did that, above and beyond, with the Harry Potter films. What does it mean to you to have had a hand in that, and what are the biggest concerns for you, in continuing that legacy with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them?
DAVID HEYMAN:
What does it mean? I don’t know. It’s just about doing the best you can, telling stories in a way that is making good films with characters that people of any age can relate to and that move an audience. It’s really exciting to be embarking upon Fantastic Beasts. I can’t wait. Jo [Rowling] has got such an incredible imagination, and it’s lovely to be in the wizarding world again.

How far along are you in the development process for Fantastic Beasts, and do you know when you’ll start shooting?
HEYMAN:
Jo is writing, and we don’t yet have a start date. We’re in the very early stages of pre-production and development.

There’s been talk about certain actors possibly getting involved. How excited are you to possibly have Eddie Redmayne as the star, and how soon do you think you’ll announce your lead actor?
HEYMAN:
There are a few big parts. We’re early on in our casting process. There are some really exciting possibilities for the parts, but we’re still very early on in the journey.

so ok... i distinctly remember they said the start date is late summer of this year... then in the next interview they said, later this year..... and now its there is no start date?

ok sounds like the script is a bit uhoh :whut: maybe they should get Steve Kloves to help out again? cant blame JKR if she's having some trouble with a screenplay, this is her first time out, and any writer can tell you that writing screenplays and novels are two very different beasts.

Augustus Worme, and Love interest Porpentina perhaps are the other key roles being cast?

Even though it hasn't started yet I am still counting the days until it's ready :) :woot:

The Script IS Finished, JKR said so herself:

@jk_rowling Is it true that there won't be a Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie anymore??

.@JulianaValdez15 Well, if it is, I've wasted a lot of time finishing the script. #ThereWillDefinitelyBeFantasticBeasts
6:50 PM - 16 Dec 2014

so it's probably her doing a few tweaking to it.

and plus this movie wouldn't have happened at all without JKR's blessing and she only let WB do the movie if they let her write the script.

so if they take her out- bye bye FBaWtFT movie.

I'd rather wait longer and it be Jo's script than them bringing Kloves again.

yeah i remember her tweet, i tweeted her back and asked her which draft she's been working on. no reply... she probably didnt see or didnt want to answer lol

its not unusual for screenplays to go through several drafts. thats standard even. what is unusual is to have production start dates getting pushed further and further back, specially for a big tentpole project with a pegged release date. its a logistics trapeze act to get everybody's schedule to work on one thing for a specific period of time-- and thats even for those with zero issues. something as basic as screenplay-- which is the foundation of a movie-- being delayed from getting to even just "shooting script" competency? yeah big uhoh.

delays in start dates results in people attached/ interested in this project to leave/ take a pass, since the window of opportunity for them to work on this have been missed. it also means WB will have to find a new release date (and all the other headaches that will ensue with having to change their marketing strategy) and of course theres the touchy issue of running overbudget $$$$$$

pretty sure WB is "shopping around" for potential cast members. if the script is the only thing thats delaying them signing contracts, sure would be a good idea to get all their ducks in a row for when the script is finally good yeah?

theres an earlier report that they're shopping around for family members of the Scamander clan. i do wonder how they're doing this if Redmayne isnt signed yet. what if they line up a fam that looks like him and then he drops out? they have to recast? eek that sounds tricky.

You may be on to something. Avatar 2 was supposed to come out next year, but as of now it won't come out until the end of 2017.

I am excited for this and I wanna know more details! I wanna know the rough casting list so far!
