Cuarón on 'PoA'

In an interview with Metroactive about his new film, Children of Men, HP director Alfonso Cuarón explains how he tried to make Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban have a different look and feel from the first two films in the series.
Quote:

Metro: Speaking of England, the third Harry Potter movie, The Prisoner of Azkaban, is the best one according to J.K. Rowling. How did you do it?

Cuarón: Guillermo del Toro pushed me to do it. He said, "You need to be clear on this. If you're going to do it, you need to honor and serve the material. If you do that, you'll make the movie great."

Metro: Serve the material!? But your movie had the most personality of any of the series.

Cuarón: We had a great production designer. And we had Rowling. She has all this geography in her mind. The thing that we wanted to do was something we hadn't seen. We hadn't seen all of Hogwarts except in bits and pieces, and there were feelings you were watching a set. Let's link the spaces, let's allow audiences — even if they don't consciously know it — to experience the geography of the place. They'll know that if there's a corridor, there's going to be a clock, and if you go past the clock, there is going to be a courtyard, and beyond that, a bridge, and then down to the mountain, there is Hagrid's hut. We did something similar in Y tu mama ... and Children. There are very few close-ups. We tried to make Hogwarts a character.

That's awesome. And it's so true that PoA had a character all its own. Even with the screen shots - I noticed that overall, the scenes were very dark and shadowy compared to the other movies.

starlightangel 01-11-2007 07:13 PM

I have to admit, POA was my favourite of them all by far, and i love the director!

Belgarion 01-11-2007 07:57 PM

good advice from guillermo del toro...and i like the idea of making hogwarts a character...also maybe cuaron will get to do another one like he wants to

ezzer123 01-11-2007 08:46 PM

That's what I love about the movie! Oh please let him do HBP!

granger 01-11-2007 08:57 PM

That was a really cool interview.

nicola calvert 01-11-2007 09:11 PM

I totally agree with him, i felt that hogwarts was a bigger part of the third movie, and thats why its my fav to date yet, as i think GoF was to much about the tasks and the yule ball. But you never know OotP might be my fav after i've seen it!:D*Bounces up and down with excitment!*

I can't believe I'll be the first one to say this but... I wouldn't really like to see him directing another HP film *shakes head*
Nice interview anyway :)

Hermionespell 01-11-2007 10:01 PM

I admit that they had a different look and feel, but I still don't like him or his directing skills at all.

I thought PoA was great. Too bad about the script and character development. It could have been an outstanding movie but it fell very short.

skates 01-12-2007 01:10 AM

Poa was definetley the best HP movie of all so far!! I would love to see Cuaron come back to direct another film, he was absolutely brilliant lol....

JOpotter 01-12-2007 03:09 AM

Now that's what sets Caron apart from Yates and Columbus. Movies are always better when the story, plot, and settings are analyzed and not just looked at for the money. Plus the movie has more heart. :loved: I'm actually suprised Sorcerer's and Chamber didn't do better. Columbus is really good at getting across the emotional aspect out to the audience.
POA just stands out from the rest in my eyes. :D

Alfronso was by far my favorite director,
and PoA in my opinion is the best HP movie so far ^_^.

Dawn Bloom 01-12-2007 03:43 AM

Well, 'Prisoner of Azkaban' left me in tears... of how bad it was!

ilovehermione244 01-12-2007 04:13 AM

I agree. He did amazing!

Pigwidgeon Took 01-12-2007 04:16 AM

TATTOOED DEMON GOD: you are spamming and flaming, posting in all caps, neither are allowed, please stop. thanks :D

I think he did a good job of making it feel less set-like and more like they were actually walking inside a castle.

chowderHPfanatic 01-12-2007 04:47 AM

Ahh... he's amazing. haha. definitely the third movie was my favorite.
