Post J.K. Rowling talks Hedwig's fate in new interview

J.K. Rowling spoke to Harry, A History author Melissa Anelli about the Harry Potter series in a new interview, segments of which will be released periodically as they were not published in the text. One particular subject discussed was the fate of Hedwig, Harry's beloved pet owl:

Quote:
"I had to work quite hard in finding a very particular way for that [Snitch] to be caught because I knew I was going to do that later; initially, as my British editor can confirm, I had Hedwig catch that [Snitch]. She wanted that changed, and I thought, 'Oh, God, back to the drawing board.'

Actually that's what sealed Hedwig's fate, because the plan was for Hedwig to open the [Snitch], because she touched it first, but, by making it Harry, then it was time to kill her earlier. I think she was going to die anyway, eventually."
The book, which releases on November 4th, can be purchased at Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.

Eventually, but not when Harry needed his friends the most.

First to post, yay!

That's so sad. I was heartbroken and crushed when Hedwig died. That was one of the moments where I closed the book and reflected before I started to read again. I don't want them showing Hedwig when she finally passes, I just want Harry to yell her name or something.

i wonder if that's where JKR got the idea for Harry to have catch the snitch with his mouth. if Hedwig was originally to have caught it, then what she would be using would be her beak.

It's still very surreal to me that she's actually dead... With all the everyone else I really felt the lost, but, With Hedwig I just kept thinking that it wasn't true.

the openng chapters of DH were overwhelming with Hedwig's death particulalry difficult to comprehend (but necesary in the overall scheme of things).

Hedwig's death was a tough thing for me to get over, as well as some of my other favourite characters that had passed away in the book. Hedwig was just a character that was there from pretty much the beginning. She was Harry's first friend really and the way that Jo made it hurt for Harry made it hurt for me and I'm sure many more the same.

dont really understand ''it was time to kill her earlier''...i mean why kill her at all?
I dont really think it made any difference to the plot/story if she lived or died. Hedwig was only just ''fluttering'' around a wardrobe or in her cage most of the time.

it was almost like an unnecessary pain that JK caused, just because it felt like Harry was definately, finally, the most lonely person in the world.
I was waiting for Harry's meltdown, atleast when dobby died :S

That's really interesting-but I think it was better that Hedwig died-it kind of symbolises Harry growing up.

*tear*
Poor Hedwig. I feel sad again just thinking about it. I remember after I read it being pretty shocked. And then the tears started to fall. And they got worse when I thought that Hagrid had died.
I'm surprised now at how emotional I was reading Deathly Hallows.

But back to the article, lol, I'm surprised that Hedwig was the original snitch catcher. Why would she have even been on a Quidditch pitch? Hmm...

That was just so sad when Hedwig died. I think I might have been more depressed about Hedwig dying than Moody dying. I always seem to get more emotional over the deaths of animals as opposed to people, even though I still am sad when people in books or movies die.

that is very sad, but if you think about it it is quite logical...i guess. If harry wanted to open the snitch hedwig would of had to die. Very sad, but interesting theory.

Can you imagine Harry carting Hedwig around on his travels? That would not have been convincing or easy.

She was going to but when that changed Jo realised Hedwig did not have to live to the end of DH.

Well, it is outdoors.
