If Ellie hadn't had her head on him and her hands on his arms, Dallin would've stepped away from her. But he didn't. He just stared down at her and didn't say anything but 'oh.' So this is what she did when he said she should make the best out of what she had? Or was this the no regrets and live life to its fullest part?
Or maybe she just wanted to do this. That was possible too.
"Why?" The word came out with no warning and he wished he could take it back. "I mean... I guess... you don't have to tell me."
Ellie was actually shocked that Dallin didn't let her go. But it kind of just made her feel even worse. In truth, there were two reasons for her breaking up with him. And she didn't
really want to tell him either of them. But she needed to. Dallin deserved so much better than Ellie.
And someone who wasn't going to die soon.
Reason number one:
"It wasn't real." Ellie said quietly. She pulled away from him and folded her hands together, looking down at the couch. She shook her head slowly.
"I had fun, lots of fun with you. At the lake, at Hogsmeade... But at the end of the day, when I would just sit and think... It didn't seem real to me. I couldn't feel anything there." Not to mention the stupid, painful fact that she was still slightly in love with Alex Reed. She probably sounded like an idiot. Dallin probably didn't even know what the hell she was talking about.
Reason number two:
Ellie took a deep breath.
"But there's something else too. Something I didn't tell you, that you probably should have known." And Ellie hated talking about this. So she decided to beat around the bush as much as possible.
"I'm sick. Really sick. And... I'm not going to get better." A nicer way of saying, "I'm going to die sometime soon. Just heads up." And she just left it there. There wasn't much else she could say.
