Name: Emma Thompson
Date of Birth: 15 April 1959
Place of Birth: Paddington, London, England, UK
Height: 5' 8½" (1.74 m)
On April 15th, 1959, Emma Thompson was born to Eric Thompson, an actor, and Phyllida Law, also an actor, in West London. She has a younger sister named Sophie. As a child she was a bit of an outsider at the primary school she attended in West Hampstead. She took some acting lessons at the age of 9, but didn't show much of an interest in it because she loved reading. She attended Camden School for Girls where she was in a few plays. When she got older she attended Cambridge University and studied English Literature. There she was part of the university's Footlights Group, a famous group where many of the Monty Python members had first met.
After Thompson graduated she started her career in entertainment. In the early 80s she did many comedy shows with other actors like Robbie Coltrane and Hugh Laurie. In 1987 she won a BAFTA for her work in
Fortunes of War, where she met her first husband, Kenneth Branagh. Throughout the late 80s and early 90s she won many awards in television and film. The most well know was for her lead role in
Howards End where she won both an Oscar and a BAFTA.
More recently, Emma Thompson has switched back a fourth between the art film world and mainstream Hollywood films without a problem. She still works on television, but tends to be very selective on her roles overall. She has also written screenplays such as
Sense ands Sensibility and the teleplay adaptation of
Wit, both in which she starred.
Emma Thompson is well known around the world for her satirical, sophisticated, and skillful performances, but we know her best for her brilliant performance as the kooky Divinations professor, Sybil Trelawney.
