Video: J.K. Rowling admits Deathly Hallows draft had Snape vs. Harry, not McGonagall
A new clip from The Women of Harry Potter feature on the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 Blu-ray set was released by Marie Claire UK today, where J.K. Rowling and actress Bonnie Wright discussed how strong a teacher and character Minerva McGonagall was, especially in the final battle at Hogwarts. Jo even admitted that in an early draft of Deathly Hallows, she had Harry confront Snape at Hogwarts, but opted to change that to Snape versus McGonagall. That can be viewed below.
J.K Rowling: Professor McGonagall got her moment to really show what she could do...
Bonnie Wright: The teachers have been so repressed in how they see Hogwarts, obviously from its new ruling, that you can see that they're just itching for their fight back against evil. And I love for Professor McGonagall, it just completely shows what she's made of.
J.K Rowling: I don’t like the marginalisation of women when the fighting breaks out. We get to fight too. I really wanted that. In fact, there was an earlier draft... I know there was at one point, it was Harry who took on Snape in that confrontation, and I really didn't want that to happen.
In the book Minerva McGonagall was the one who does it, and for me it was very important that she did that.
Pre-order the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 DVD and Blu-ray sets, out November 11 in the U.S. and December 2 in the UK, at the Amazon links below, or through the official Warner Bros Shop.
I'm glad she changed it. We already saw a Harry vs. Snape scene in Half-Blood Prince and Harry didn't come out so well. Having him beating Snape, even for a little bit, might have seemed strange. McGonagall was really the right person for the job.
To me it kind of sounds like in an earlier draft of the film it was Harry that took on Snape and that she didn't want it to happen, then specified that in the book it was McGonagall vs Snape.
I've always thought that there should have been more teacher action. And McGonagall is a force to be reckoned! I love her!
Though, of course, the movie diminishes her scenes a lot, even making some comedy out of her scene with the suits of armour.
Oh man! That's great! And what I found out recently is that Minerva is the Roman form of Athena, goddess of wisdom. And I was like "That's so awesome!"

Glad she had McGonagall do it... that is one of my "shiver" moments in the films...of course I have several b/c of the love that I have for the whole series...still on of my favorite characters!!!
I think it was much better with McGonagall. Because Snape has a heck of a lot mroe respect for her than he ever did for Harry, so he might not have held back quite as much, might have snuck in a tiny jinx or two....
I'm so glad Minerva got her due in the film. I mean with Harry? Come on!
As much as I liked the book version better of Snape vs. McGonagall, I'd rather have the film version than Snape vs. Harry. I mean, why even base the film on the book at all if that scene was going to be changed so much?
