A short preview of Daniel Radcliffe and J.K. Rowling's interview from the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 BD/DVD, out on November 11 in the U.S. and December 2 in the U.K., was released by Yahoo! In the clip, Dan discussed the Harry Potter fanbase and how it extended from books to film. That can be seen here. Dan Radcliffe: It’s interesting actually if you start to think for a moment not about these characters being characters, but if you think about the lives these characters actually have within the books and the fact that - to a certain level - because they exist in the collective conscientiousness of a generation, they do exist.
I always think that’s one of the wonderful things about Potter and the Potter fan base, is that whereas if you think about the other big costume-wearing and all that kind of stuff that goes with it – things like Star Wars and Star Trek - what’s interesting is that Potter, because it started off as a literary thing, has kind of created a generation of the same kind of mentality of geeky thoroughness, but with an appetite for reading and literature, which is kind of amazing.
Jo Rowling: It was wonderful. It was just the most wonderful thing.
Subsequently, Moviefone released this interview with Dan where he admitted he has yet to watch the Star Wars films. That can be read here. What's your opinion of the comparisons between 'Harry Potter' and 'Star Wars.' Do you enjoy 'Star Wars'?
Daniel Radcliffe: [sighs and starts smiling]
Wait, you've never seen 'Star Wars'?
Daniel: I know, and now this information is going to be out there in the world.
Wow. That's hard to do.
Daniel: I know. Yeah, I know. It's really bad.
So not any of the six movies?
Daniel: I saw 'The Phantom Menace,' and everyone's like, "You saw that one! You didn't see the originals?!" I know! I was ten! I didn't know any better!
I have the Blu-rays on me if you really want to watch them.
Daniel: Oh, you can't give me the Blu-rays! I think, actually, somebody is planning on getting them for me. Here's my opinion, though. Not on the films or the filmmaking, because I'm sure they're amazing and incredible. And I know that I would love them because I'm a geek -- so I would definitely get into them. What 'Star Wars' and 'Potter' have in common is a huge devoted fan base. Where they differ, I think there is a -- and this is my perception, I may be completely wrong -- I think there is a slightly more balanced split between the sexes in the fan base of 'Potter.'
I associate 'Star Wars' as being a predominantly male thing. And I think 'Potter' is split more evenly. The difference is also that any kind of a franchise where a world is created will then engender a generation of nerds. Fantastic! Nerds are the best things in the world. I think of myself as a nerd. What was the Bill Gates thing? "Be nice to nerds, you'll probably be working for them one day."
But I think the difference is because 'Potter' started out as a book, it's created a generation of literary nerds in a way that 'Star Wars' perhaps didn't. But, basically, it's all the same. I mean, I do think of 'Potter' as being this generation's 'Star Wars.' It's something that an entire generation as lost themselves in and it's a meticulously created, detailed world. So I do think that's the closest thing to compare it to.

The awful truth is, Dan will never see the original Star Wars. Thanks to the heavy-handed tinkering by George Lucas, what he will see is the botched up remastered, over busy and completly ruined 'original' versions of Star Wars. The lesson? NEVER mess with a masterpiece.

Psssh! There is, and never has been any heavy handed tinkering. It's is the same story. It is the same plot. It's the same characters. Loving a story has nothing to do with cosmetic SFX enhancements or sound FX changes. It's like not loving a person anymore because they got minor plastic surgery. True geeks love SW too much to let it go because something that insignificant.
Also I thought I should point out that Dan says, "geeky thoroughness", not geeky followers.

I'm surprised at how many people didn't see Star Wars. I liked Dan's reaction to the question, though. I am a fan of both series, but Potter is a better series in many ways.
