Giving her a hug he smiled letting her know it was alright, "I'll be back." Looking at Mari he smiled and with a squeeze of Liz's hand left the two of them to talk hopefully it'll ease the tension. Thankfully, Robert chose to leave. Oh, and how nice, he even cited his own awkwardness, acknowledging that which Mari avoided. Her relief was evident in her expression, even if just a little bit. Once Robert walked away, with Mari tossing a small wave at his back, she turned to Elizabeth. " Honestly, this was the most awkward conversation I've had since I broke the news to my parents that I'd gotten married." She said, gaze dropping to her plate a moment before coming back up to focus on Elizabeth.
" Now...we should walk around. See who else..." Mari had turned, skimming the crowd when she heard a familiar voice, soon matched up with a familiar face. Hmm. She would eventually make her way over to Nicholai. He did seem rather occupied at the moment anyhow. Her expression was unreadable as she paused a moment, but in another second or two she had turned back to Elizabeth. " See who else is here." she said finally to her friend. " And I can show you a few pictures I took of Alex and Bella. I figured I would show you here, and not wait around to send you copies via owl." Mari said with a small smile. Elizabeth had to admit her relief that it seemed Robert had decided not to push on the whole owl issue. At least to herself, even though she sort of had a feeling it was going to come up in conversation later. Things usually did, but maybe the fact they were at the ball would stall things. Or the fact Mari was there, and there was the whole weird awkwardness thing. She had to stifle a giggle, though, as suddenly Robert was all animated. "I'd imagine she probably is," she said, the stifled amusement still sneaking out in the tone of her voice. As far as she remembered, this was the type of thing Lyra wouldn't have missed. And then he was taking his leave, and she kissed him back. "Tell Lyra I said hi, if you find her. Or anyone else we know," she said before he left. There was always Professor Vindictus, too, after all. And she wanted to talk to Mari for a while.
Her eyes widened a little, though, as the first words out of her best friend's mouth once they were alone sounded. "I was hoping it had all sort of settled down, really. I mean, it's been ages and I know it's weird. But I thought we'd all gotten it figured out," she replied with a sigh, especially as it took a minute for Mari to look at her again. And that had to be hard, since she was shorter than the brunette and Mari had looked down. But a grin crept onto her face as the other girl spoke about wandering, then trailed off. It figured Mari would notice Nicholai, even though she found it interesting she'd noticed him first. Mari must have really been distracted by the conversation with Robert. "Of course. Although it seems if we just stayed here practically everyone would end up here too," she said with a bit of levity. Since obviously Nicholai was there, with some other people she didn't think had been at Hogwarts when they all had been. And she'd seen Clifford and Evangeline, although she didn't think they would have remembered her from her one term as prefect. Her attention went back to Mari however when the taller brunette continued speaking. "I'd like that," she said with a smile. And then maybe she'd have to talk about her own stuff, although it wasn't half as interesting as her best friend having children.
