He walked back up to the front of the room, where he placed a piece of wood into the mitre box. “Rest your non dominant hand atop the mitre box to keep it in place and then place the saw into the groove of the mitre box.” He paused for a moment to demonstrate to the class what he was doing. “Now to saw the wood, it is a push and pull action with your hand.”
Again he demonstrated to the class on what to do, after a minute he had managed to cut the piece of wood in half. “Okay off you go.”
Patroclus watched on as Professor Lawson demonstrated sawing with the use of the mitre box.
'Easy enough' the third year thought to himself.
Picking up his piece of wood, Patroclus made saw the watch out for the nail, pointing out on one side, he then placed it in the mitre box, and collected his saw. The grip on the end of the saw was hard plastic, slightly rough from use. Shaking it ever so slightly, he noticed that the blade of the saw began to wobble. He was impressed that such a structurally weak looking tool, could slice wood so proficiently.
Placing the blade in the guides of the mitre box, Patroclus gave a push with his arm, not at all expecting what would happen. The blade slide through the guide, only grazing the top of the wood, and with the blade went Patroclus' body weight. He found himself nearly lying on the mitre box. His effort had been used to move the blade, not to pierce the wood.
Standing back up he tried again, this time ensure he pushed down as well as away. The saw dug lower and lower into the wood, with every push and pull motion Patroclus made. In a few seconds he heard a crack, as the saw reached through to the other side. "Success!" |
